The arcade was our favorite place to hang out. But there were some games that we blew thousands of quarters on because they were too hard. What do people think were the hardest retro arcade games? We get frustrated until we're broke on Enjoy Stuff. Pass the token 'pon the left hand side! We're gonna need ‘em all with the hardest games in the arcade. Don't get frustrated! Enjoy Stuff.   News In retro news: Garfield phones invade the beaches of France! Star Wars: Andor season 2 premieres this week on Disney+   Check out our TeePublic store for some enjoyable swag and all the latest fashion trends What we're Enjoying Jay continues to ride the trail of Western Movies, but adds a little prehistoric this week with his viewing of One Million Years BC. The quality of this Ray Harryhausen movie may not have been at the top of his list, but it was still an interesting idea and had some crazy genre mashups. Shua found some cool YouTube channels that have some great, high quality classic Pink Panther cartoons. It's a great way to have some retro in the background.      Sci-Fi Saturdays This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay gets real with the 2011 Hugh Jackman movie Real Steel. This often overlooked film has a lot of great robot action in the boxing ring, like a mechanical Rocky. Read his article on RetroZap.com. And make sure to play around with the interactive map on MCULocationScout.com. Plus, you can tune in to SHIELD: Case Files where Jay and Shua talk about great stuff in the MCU. Enjoy Video Games!  We loved spending time in the arcade as we were growing up. We tried to use our quarters wisely and budget them for the maximum experience possible. But sometimes we had to cram a lot of them into games over and over because they were so hard. Which ones were the most challenging? Were they the same ones you struggled with? Let's see what the internet said and decide if we agree.  What challenging games did we miss? First person that emails me with the subject line, “I need a cheat code” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Vi ratear/roastar IGN:s tiopoängare genom tiderna!Listan: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) Reviewed by Kristine Steimer November 25, 1998 "The new benchmark for interactive entertainment has arrived. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the fifth official installment in Nintendo's popular action adventure series is finally here, and like its NES predecessor in 1987 it is a game so enjoyable, it has the power to pull videogame players into its imaginative worlds -- and refuse to let go for days. Call us crazy, but when the final version of Zelda 64 arrived in the IGN64 offices, we stopped working, locked ourselves into a room with a big-screen TV and a surround system and played 17 hours straight. After only a few hours of sleep, we were back for more and we couldn't stop until we finished the game. Then, we started over again to find all the secrets. Rarely is there such a perfect mixture of graphics, sound, and gameplay that even the most cynical players will admit that Zelda 64 is poised to shape the action RPG genre for years to come." Pokemon Red Reviewed by Craig Harris June 23, 1999 "Pokemon really is worthy of being one of the Game Boy system's greatest games - it's not just a fad, a craze, or trend. If you don't have this game in your library, pick one up, it doesn't matter if you pick Blue or Red, they're both the same game. You'll just have to make sure you've got a friend with the other version if you want to catch 'em all." Pokemon Blue Reviewed by Craig Harris June 23, 1999 "Pokemon really is worthy of being one of the Game Boy system's greatest games - it's not just a fad, a craze, or trend. You'll just have to make sure you've got a friend with the other version if you want to catch 'em all." Checkered Flag Reviewed by Robert A. Jung July 6, 1999 "This is a high-performance title that does nothing but pure video racing, and does it extremely well. Crammed with exciting gameplay, fast action, options galore, hot sound and graphics, and true multiplayer challenge, Checkered Flag is absolutely terrific!" Joust Reviewed by Robert A. Jung July 6, 1999 "Joust is another unbelievably excellent product from Shadowsoft. Players who never played the arcade title will be captivated by its simple rules, deep strategy, and fast action, while the legions of arcade Joust fans will be in video-gaming heaven!" Super Mario Bros. Deluxe Reviewed by Craig Harris July 21, 1999 "Super Mario Bros. remains one of my top 10 favorite games of all-time, even though it's almost a decade and a half old. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is such a perfect translation, it makes me wonder if it's easy to port NES games to the Game Boy Color. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is the Game Boy Color-specific game to own, hands down, and will be the title that, hopefully, will key a revolution of porting NES games to the handheld system. Buy this game. Now." The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX Reviewed by Adam Cleveland September 17, 1999 "If that's not enough to set your minds on gaming fire, then you seriously need a reality check, because The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening has never been anything but one of the top video games of all time, and its latest, enhanced version is nothing short of perfect. For years to come and then some, it will continue to remain one of my all-time favorite adventures, and unless someone puts a couple of gun barrels to my head, my opinions won't be swayed. If you don't already own Zelda DX, there's no reason from this point on that you shouldn't. So hop in your car and step on the gas, 'cause the best Game Boy game of all time has been for sale for quite some time, and you're missing out on oceans of fun." Soulcalibur Reviewed by Anoop Gantayat September 20, 1999 "Few games come to mind as "required purchases," games that are so good that they have to be a part of your lineup. The original Soul Edge was such a game, and now Soul Calibur has earned a place alongside its brother. It may or may not be the most complicated fighting game out there - I'm not bold enough to make such a statement. I am bold enough, though, to state that I've never had so much fun with a fighting game than I had when playing Soul Calibur." Mario Golf (Game Boy Color) Reviewed by Craig Harris October 5, 1999 "Guys and gals, I don't care if you're not into golf, you must add Mario Golf to your library of Game Boy Color games. This game is the perfect title to complement your collection. It's got tons of variety, pick-up-and-play controls, N64 connectivity... and it's great fun, especially in the later levels. The early challenges from the pros are decidedly easy to get through ¿ you'll see them throw easy, five foot putts to give you the lead. But when you go up against Mario in the Tournaments, watch out. Mario Golf is by far the best portable version of golf, and it even comes close to toppling some of the PC golf offerings as well." Pokemon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition Reviewed by Craig Harris October 19, 1999 "There's a reason why Pokemon is so successful, it's an excellent game. The game isn't incredibly deep, but the incentive of catching new creatures for your personal collection is a strong enough force to get you going to the end. The game is super easy to pick up and play, yet it's challenging it its own right. And it's addictive. After playing both Pokemon Red/Blue and then Yellow, I have to say that Pokemon Yellow is the best version to start out on the whole Pokemon craze." Sonic Pocket Adventure Reviewed by Craig Harris December 7, 1999 "I am really, really stunned at how well Sonic Pocket Adventure turned out on the NeoGeo Pocket Color ¿ the system needed a platform game, and Sonic delivers big-time. There are minor slowdown glitches, but not enough to distract from the overall game experience. The cartridge is truly brimming with gaming options that will keep you coming back, especially if you're lucky enough to have access to two systems. SNK really delivers the goods on another company's mascot, and Sonic Pocket Adventure is a cartridge no handheld library should be without. Yes, it has to be said: this game is a system-seller." SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium Reviewed by Craig Harris January 4, 2000 "As far as I'm concerned, this is the perfect handheld fighter, no question about it. The Capcom license gives players a familiar feel as well as introducing newcomers to the SNK library of fighters. The game isn't exactly a challenge right off the bat, but once you move the difficulty setting from Normal to Hard (there's two more after that: Brutal and Gamer), good luck. The computer AI can get downright nasty. And the Olympic mode really puts your Street Fighter abilities to test - let's just see how far you can get. SNK just keeps doing the right stuff with its portable...let's hope the Capcom tradition continues. The Ghouls 'N Ghosts minigame just BEGS to be converted into the full-fledged game. Let's have it, people..." Källa: IGN INDIA

The idiom “tilt at windmills” comes from the 17 th century novel, Don Quixote, and means attacking imaginary enemies. Quixote would imagine that the windmills were giant warriors to be attacked. The adjective “quixotic” has come to mean exciting, but impractical or unrealistic. Tip the decanter to pour the merlot. To tilt is to tip, incline or lean. Full speed or pace Will determine the race. Full tilt means at top speed or with full force and energy. Running at full speed helps win in a sprint but it's not the best strategy in a marathon. Joust with a lance in a Middle Age show. In medieval times (a.k.a. the Middle Ages, normally capitalized), competitors would tilt or joust in an entertaining public contest. Essentially, two combatants would charge at each other on horseback with lances, trying to knock the other off their horse. In the pantheon of video game classics, Joust stands as a testament to innovation and simplicity, capturing the hearts of gamers with its unique gameplay and imaginative design. Released by Williams Electronics in 1982, Joust broke the mold with its two-player cooperative play, pitting knights riding flying giant birds against enemy knights on buzzards in a fantastical medieval jousting tournament. What sets it apart? Perhaps it's the game's simplicity, combined with its challenging gameplay, that has captivated players for decades. Or maybe it's the camaraderie and competition fostered by its cooperative and versus modes. Joust transcends the typical arcade game classification by marrying straightforward controls with complex strategic depth. This ingenious blend of easy-to-learn yet hard-to-master gameplay, along with its distinctive setting, elevates Joust from mere entertainment to a cultural touchstone of the early 80s arcade era, resonating with players beyond its original release. In this episode, we take a deep dive into the legacy of Joust. Beyond my nostalgic recollections and the impact it had on the arcade scene, we'll explore the elements that make Joust a game worth revisiting. I'll examine the creative vision of its developers, how they crafted a game that stood out in a sea of space shooters and maze chases, and the enduring appeal of its gameplay mechanics. The development team behind Joust brought a novel concept to life with a mix of creativity and technical prowess. The game's designer, John Newcomer, aimed to create a game that emphasized cooperative play, a rarity at the time. This vision resulted in a game that was not only innovative but also ahead of its time in promoting multiplayer engagement. Moreover, the iconic art and sound effects contributed to Joust's immersive experience, creating a game environment that was both fantastical and inviting. The challenge of balancing on a flying ostrich, knocking opponents off their mounts, and navigating the dynamic levels offered an unforgettable arcade experience. So, whether you're a veteran who spent countless quarters mastering Joust's jousting mechanics or a newcomer curious about the classics that paved the way for today's video games, this episode promises to delve into the rich history and enduring legacy of Joust. Tune in as we take flight on a nostalgic journey back to the golden age of arcades.

Show Notes As the month of October draws to a close, so must Dan and Kris dive into this month's 10 20 30 40 with enthusiastic aplomb. Each month, they look back at notable game releases from 10, 20, 30, and 40 years ago, and while there were some nasty technical difficulties preventing them from efficiently dong to (Thanks to Metacritic changing the way their site works), they still managed to pull it off! This time around, the 10 and 30 were fairly mundane, but the 20 and 40 were quite stellar with some fantastic Atari 2600 arcade port like Dig Dug and Joust, and the PS2/Xbox/GameCube generation seeing some killer classics like Jak II, Viewtiful Joe, and Crimson Skies. At the top of the show, Kris tells the story of how he went to New York city to see The State live on stage, and how a stranger with a jump drive made his day. Dan didn't do much gaming thanks to a visit from his in-laws, but did get to catch up on some fantastic TV, and finally get some time in with Star Wars: Jedi Survivor. But the big story was the release of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Kris spent some time with the game and it's every bit as magical as he thought it would be. Is it the best Mario game since the Super NES? Only time will tell. enjoy! Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on 1991's Eye of the Beholder, from Westwood Studios and published by Strategic Simulations Inc. We set the game in its time before exploring its primary mechanics and the feel of being in this world. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: First level or two Issues covered: knowing who the evil is, tactical top down Gold Box, the opening cutscene, being amazed at how much they get into the Game Boy version of a Metroid game, lots of movie tie-ins, a wide variety of machines, lack of automap, being everything one wanted for a Forgotten Realms nerd, one of the ten games, semi real-time, living inside the depths of Waterdeep, a style of play which continues today, having to rest immediately, gaining information through audio, uncovering the whole map vs racing towards the goal, tournament play, losing is fun, the only way out is through, annotating a later map, interacting with the play space, accessibility and the mouse, contextualization and abstraction in game design, having to throw weapons in the world, how cool the audio is, using items to locate yourself, creating a party, crunchy spells, shout-outs to upcoming work, difficulty in the bosses in Metroid games then and now, games influencing games, getting the green light, justifying the game via the sweet spot of trends, why not just make this a Star Wars game, how green lighting changes with bigger franchises, games that changed our perspectives.
