What this means for our democracy is discussed and lamented. On this week's program, your host, Justin Mog, takes a seat in the common area for a great conversation about building community through cohousing! Listen in as we dialogue with Don Reinhardt, Outreach Director for Louisville Cohousing (https://www.louisvillecohousing.com/). Since the beginning of humankind, people lived with their extended families in communities where many tasks and resources were shared. Villages were structured in a way that encouraged more daily interaction. It is still that way in many places in the world. But here in the United States, especially, since World War,  our neighborhoods have typically been designed for the nuclear family in a way that encourages less interaction. Isolation has become one of the most prominent public health issues of our time. We are more self-sufficient, but are we really? In 1940, an estimated 8 percent of Americans lived alone in their household. Now, 40 million Americans currently live alone, accounting for 30% of American households. And loneliness, according to the surgeon general, has been found to have the same negative health impact as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.Revived models of the village, namely Cohousing, can provide a way to plan for a healthier and more sustainable way of living, where neighbors design their village together and support each other more. Learn more and get connected with Louisville Cohousing at https://www.louisvillecohousing.com/ Don is a native Kentuckian who graduated from Northern Kentucky University in the early 1980's with a degree in Psychology. Don currently lives in Campbellsburg, KY, where he returned to his home state in 2017 after 25 years in the San Francisco Bay Area. His work has included careers in mental health, information technology, and construction management, with over 30 years of experience in all levels of residential construction. He became interested in intentional community early in his career while studying at NKU. Don has lived in two Cohousing communities on the West Coast, and through all of his work he has carried a lifelong passion for combining Social Ventures with Housing Solutions. As a housing consultant, Don is currently partnered with nonprofit organizations in Louisville with missions of providing Affordable Housing for persons who have been marginalized. He has worked primarily with the Mattingly Edge, and a new non-profit start-up, Inclusive Housing Solutions, to launch Louisville Cohousing. In cooperation with Hope Dittmeier and Broke Crum at Mattingly Edge, and Mathilde Berthe at STUDIO co+hab, a cohousing architectural firm, and Frank Schwartz, a social worker, he recently spearheaded a grassroots effort by citizens who are part of Louisville Cohousing to get Cohousing included in the final draft of Mayor Greenberg's My Louisville Home Plan for 15,000 new Affordable Housing units by 2027. Don has family in Campbellsburg, Louisville, and Northern Kentucky. He has the dream of establishing Cohousing communities at each location. Today I'm welcoming Ruth Newman to the podcast, a “cookier” who specializes in creating intricately decorated sugar cookies for showers, charities, and friends. However, she has never felt the urge to turn her beloved hobby into a career.  And that, in fact, is exactly the reason she is my guest today. In 2024, I wanted at least some of the episodes I release to be just easy, meandering conversations with everyday people that I've never met before. Without publicists or books, series, or movements to sell, sometimes it's everyday people who restore our faith in the power of food and remind us to nurture and celebrate connections to our closest people, the people who, quite frankly, may cheer for us, but don't really care what we do or how successful we are. Ruth begins by sharing her recipe for German Rouladen, a complicated beef dish she made for the 200 guests at her only child's wedding. After discussing the recipe and a day so special it still stand out in Ruth's memory 25 years later, we wind our way through topics and stories, ending with the people who are supporting Ruth and her husband through his Parkinson's disease, which has now reached a 4th stage.  While I've got some powerhouse episodes lined to share with you in the next few weeks - and I'm thrilled, honored, and excited to share those episodes - I know I will not enjoy them any more than this simple discussion with Ruth about the memories and values that truly make a life worth living. Thank you, Ruth! Vincent Gonzalez, Co-host of “Community Control Now” Scholars and activists struggle with the same question: How can I broadcast my message and engage new audiences? Enter community radio, one of the only remaining people-powered, community-controlled corners of the media landscape. Since April 2017, Forward Radio WFMP Louisville has been broadcasting and podcasting the voices of the people at 106.5fm and http://forwardradio.org. Radio has long been one of the most accessible and effective forms of storytelling and information sharing. The exploding popularity of podcasting demonstrates the enduring power of audio. Ever since Louisville's social justice and sustainability focused community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP went on-air in April 2017, UofL faculty, staff, and students have been active collaborators with community members from across the region in generating thought-provoking, provocative, and engaging programming. This community service takes place both behind the microphones and behind the scenes as volunteers help sustain the station with community outreach at public events, volunteer recruitment, training, fundraising, administration, and engineering. Over the years, the station has also provided a megaphone for countless UofL faculty, staff, students, and community partners to share their knowledge, research, and passions with the broader community through guest appearances, one-time Access Hour programs, and podcasts. This round table, featuring UofL faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners who have all been involved in the station in various ways over the years, offered a rich discussion about the power of community radio to educate, inform, transform and unite our city. Listen in as we share our stories of how this work has made a difference in our own lives and scholarship, while creating positive change in our community.
