Episode 141 of the Check Your Six Podcast had an intern flavor to it this time when Sean and April brought some of the interns that they had working with Edge Consulting and the Be The Change Today Foundation into GRP Studios. It was a chance for the interns to close out their summer internship by participating in a LinkedIn workshop and creating their profile, getting headshots from Jerry Katz, getting makeup done and talking about their summer adventure as interns. Some great observations as they moved throughout Central Florida with the Seminole Chamber Councils, Longwood Commission meetings, Longwood Rotary meeting and several other aspects of small business here in Central Florida. Thanks as well to Tony Boni and the Be The Change Today Foundation for being part of this event building the future of young business individuals.

How often do you vow to do better in the future, or dream of being different... and how often does that actually happen? Whether it's a mistake at work, a fight with a loved one, or falling short on your personal goals, it's tempting to promise yourself "You'll get it right next time!" But, as you'll hear this week, you can't just hope or promise to be different and expect it to magically happen. This is an Encore episode of the Follower of One podcast from our archives. We are on a short break. Welcome back to the Follower of One podcast. I'm your host, Mike Henry Sr. Today. I want to talk about James 2:26, "For as the body, apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead." That's from the English Standard Version. We talk about work regularly here, but we're not talking about your job today. We're talking about actions that we take because we follow Jesus. James is explaining how we can claim to believe. But if that belief never changes our lives in any way, we're just fooling ourselves or we're trying to. If we claim to believe in Jesus, but we do not change as a result, we don't know him very well. We're not really following him. And I think this sometimes gets mistaken in the tug of war that kind of goes on about trusting God with my salvation. If I trust God with my salvation, then I should live differently. I shouldn't just trust him and relax and not do anything different. By trusting him it means that I now live differently because I believe that what he says matters. One of those great examples is with the tithe. Do you give some of your money to support the church; to support the work of God? We give a 10th of our income or more. We give whatever we give, because we trust God to do more with the remainder of what we keep than what he would do if we kept it all. It's the same concept behind being closed on Sunday or taking a Sabbath rest day or going to church. If you spend a couple of hours every week going to a local church or being a part of a body of believers so that your relationship with God can grow, God has the ability to use the rest of your time to bless you more than you might possibly be blessed by using all of your own time. God challenges us to give away things from time to time because we trust him. We trust him to do more with what we hang on to. That's the way I think we're called to be at work. We get a challenge to live our life differently in the workplace. We can give away more than is expected of us. We can do more than our job might demand. We can give to our coworkers and bless our customers or our vendors more. We're free to do that. Today, I want to challenge us. Let's use our true faith and let's ask God to make it cause a change in our lives. If we claim to be Jesus' followers, let's ask God one quick question right now. "God, what do I need to change today?" Can you ask God that question? The things that come to your mind are from him. You can tell him "No." You can think, " God, I can't really do that." Or "God, you really don't want me to do that today, do you?" This is very convicting to me, because I've been struggling with myself in a particular area as well. And now I need to take action on what I just told you. So, let's ask ourselves one more question. "What happens if I don't listen to God?" I want to follow Jesus more and more every day. Do you? Today let's turn to him and follow him. What he puts on your mind today to do, figure out a way to get it done. Do things that glorify him. Do things that you know that he would have you do in your workplace simply because you trust him. Let's follow him. This is between us and Jesus. My prayer is that today we are each courageous enough to ask this prayer and then act on the answer we hear. You'll be blown away by what happens next. If you want to be a part of a community of people who are trying to grow in their faith and trying to make a difference in the world that they live in every day, then check us out over at https://followerofone.org. We'd love for you to join our community and join us on the next Marketplace Mission Trip. Thanks very much.

This week on Truth to Power, we bring you an important conversation about policies to support food justice in Louisville from the inaugural People's Summit on Food Systems and Urban Agriculture that was held on September 9th at 100 Witherspoon Conference Center and organized by the Food in Neighborhoods (FIN) community coalition and the Cooperative Extension Program of Kentucky State University. In this Workshop on New Food and Land Laws to Weave Food Justice Into our City, you will hear from panelists: - Abby Rudolph, Food in Neighborhoods - Amanda Fuller, Lots of Food - Yu Emily Liu & Jay Luckett, Louisville Metro Office of Planning - Jody Dahmer & Mariah Corso, Beargrass Thunder - Tia Bowman, Metro Office of Community Development - Tay G, Change Today, Change Tomorrow. Weaving the Food Web: The People's Summit on Food Systems and Urban Agriculture was held in downtown Louisville September 8–9th, 2023. Food in Neighborhoods (FIN) and the Cooperative Extension Program of Kentucky State University (KYSU) have partnered to organize this public event that included caravan tours in the city to raise awareness about local food apartheid and grassroots efforts to increase healthy food access as well as spotlight the work of urban growers. The Summit also featured workshop-style events involving popular education and in-depth political strategy discussions, addressing topics such as: food apartheid and environmental racism; youth leadership training; how to grow your own food; cooperative economics and Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs); urban and rural land access; New American success stories; and local food policy advocacy. Weaving the Food Web is a transformative act of healing, solidarity, and collective action toward realizing food justice, human rights and dignified livelihoods for all. Exciting food justice initiatives were featured and the input of participants - through dialogue, art and celebration - was gathered during the day. Hot breakfast and lunch, ASL and language interpretation were offered, along with childcare, and Grow Appalachia offered free registration for beginning farmers. Learn more at http://foodinneighborhoods.org On Truth to Power each week, we gather people from around the community to discuss the state of the world, the nation, the state, and the city! It's a community conversation like you won't hear anywhere else! Truth to Power airs every Friday at 9pm, Saturday at 11am, and Sunday at 4pm on Louisville's grassroots, community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP and live streams at http://forwardradio.org
Many of us show up to work and don't really understand why? Sure there's bills to pay, project to tackle and promotions to get, but is that really what you would be doing if money wasn't a factor. Speaking with Travis McAshan, Founder & CEO of Glide, he talks about the importance of reflection and spending time contemplating who you want to be. Values are a critical piece for running your company and knowing yourself. If want to be known as someone who helped others, are you doing that today? Why not? In life you become what you think about and actions will allow you to bring that to life. Joseph and Travis huddle on the importance of values and how companies need to "Uncover" them, not "Create" them. A common misconception is that lasting values are created, but in actuality, they already exist. Actions speak louder than words on a lobby wall and great values should not only drive work productivity, but also just make you a better person. On this week's Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, is thrilled to be in dialogue with the inspirational Taylor Ryan, Founder and Director of Change Today, Change Tomorrow (https://change-today.org/). Taylor was born and raised in Paducah, but now lives in Louisville. She is a UofL Communications alum with two masters degrees from Marshall University. She has always been a dynamic and giving part of her community; being involved in various organizations such as New Roots and Empowering Ladies Together. With her focused community connection, Taylor was able to spearhead dozens of impactful projects, including everything from food pantry and hygiene drives, to entire block clean-ups. In addition, Taylor has served as a Community History Fellow at the Filson Historical Society, the Norton Institute for Health Equity's Community Advisory Board on COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy in West Louisville, and the Community Advisory Board for Louisville Youth Philanthropic Council. She recently joined the board of the Kentucky Solar Energy Society. While looking into the needs of her community, Taylor found existing organizations weren't meeting the mark, either due to a lack of resources or disconnect from the community. Taylor decided to do something about it, and Change Today, Change Tomorrow was founded. Since 2019, CTCT has provided barrier-free access to the community through food justice, educational services, and public health initiatives. Change Today, Change Tomorrow is a Black woman led non-profit organization in Louisville. Through the main pillars of service, Food Justice, Community Engagement, and Public Health, they provide for the most marginalized communities in the city, because when you show up for the most marginalized, you show up for everyone. They protect, defend, and meet the needs of those who have been counted out. They are a force of disruptors and changemakers that believe in #communitypower. If you're interested in applying for the working Board of Directors, go to http://tinyurl.com/CTCTBoard CTCT's Inaugural 5k Call To Action Walk is Saturday, August 19th 8-11am, starting at Broadway at the Shawnee Park Loop and walking to the only grocery store in the West End to raise awareness about food apartheid. Online registration required. CTCT's Annual Vegan Cookoff is Saturday, August 19th 2-5pm at The Common Table Garden Café, 1200 South 28th Street. This one-of-a-kind event celebrates health, community, and the fight against food injustice in Louisville's West End. At this vibrant gathering local chefs will present their best vegan dishes to be tasted, enjoyed, and voted on by attendees. But there's more to the event than just mouth-watering vegan cuisine. Attendees will have the chance to pick up free, fresh produce from Cleav's Family Farm, savor in-house made cold-pressed juice, and receive organic supplements and herbal teas from Health Daddy Wow. There will also be free health screenings and resources from a variety of community organizations. It's an afternoon packed full of flavors, health, and community-building you won't want to miss! Change is an inevitable part of life, much like death and taxes. In this podcast, we explore the relationship between change and personal mastery. Many people resist change, but it is essential to embrace it, especially in today's fast-paced world. Let's dive into this topic and understand why adaptability is crucial for personal growth and success. Key Highlights: Change as an Unavoidable Element: Change, death, and taxes are all aspects of life that cannot be avoided. Recognizing this reality is the first step towards understanding the connection between change and personal mastery. The Pace of Change: Today, change occurs at an unprecedented speed, primarily driven by technological advancements. The exponential growth of technology, such as Moore's Law, where computer chips double in power every eighteen months, highlights the rapid pace of change. Resistance and Inconvenience: Many individuals resist change because they fear the inconvenience it brings. However, it is crucial to differentiate between change itself and the inconvenience caused by it. Change is inevitable, and our bodies, circumstances, and surroundings constantly undergo transformations. Enjoying the Benefits of Change: While some changes may inconvenience us, we often overlook the positive aspects brought about by change. From technological advancements to improved health care and convenience in our daily lives, there are numerous benefits that we enjoy due to change. The Challenge of Adaptability: To achieve personal mastery, one must be adaptable to change. Complaining or resisting change only hinders personal growth and success. Instead, embracing change and finding ways to adapt can lead to mastery and a peaceful coexistence with the ever-evolving world. Change is not something to be feared, but rather an opportunity for growth and adaptation. By accepting the inevitability of change and embracing it with open arms, we open ourselves up to endless possibilities for personal mastery. Let's challenge ourselves to let go of resistance and complaints and instead focus on adapting to change. Together, we can navigate the changing world with peace and love. Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share this, and let's spread the message of adaptability and growth to the world. Have a masterful day, embracing change with peace and love! Organized and Fabulous Mom - Organization made easy for overwhelmed moms Simplified and Fabulous Mom
Hey Friend, I've had a real awakening about how short life is. What is keeping you from doing those important things? is it too much to do? Is it a super busy schedule? Where are you storing up your treasures? I could leave everything in our home as long as my family was safe. People are so much more important! Relationships are the priority to me! What are your priorities? Are they really going to matter in "the end"? What is keeping you from being able to live life the way you feel you should? Can you let it go? Can you fix it today? I don't want any THING to keep me from loving someone else. I would much rather give someone else their dream gift than get anything on my list. If STUFF is keeping you from the life you should be living, today is the day to make the change! I'm here if you need a hand or the starting point plan. Episode 390 - The Secret to Change Today we have Jess. She is 37, from Ontario, and has been sober since May 7, 2022. Ditch the Booze Mindfulness Course starts 9/20.: https://www.recoveryelevator.com/cafere/ Recovery Fit – Paul Lapine. Lapine Fitness Center. https://Lapinefit.com/recoveryfit Insta:Paul_Lapine_ Highlights from Paul YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE IT! Anyone who doesn't quit quitting eventually creates distance from alcohol. “The secret of change is to focus all your energy, not fighting the old, but building the new.” Socrates. This journey is about transformation. It's an invitation to create a life where alcohol isn't needed. It's about letting part of you go. It's about saying goodbye to the aspects of your life that aren't working, Paul suggests fighting the old is a waste, and addiction is a messenger letting you know your life is out of balance. Desperation leads to surrender, which leads to openness and willingness. Don't resist change as it is one constant you can count on. She is an accountant for a rehab hospital and enjoys reading, camping, cooking, and paddleboarding with her dog. She lives in Ontario, Canada, and has two children. Jess came from a family of drinkers. Her Dad was a heavy drinker. She started experimenting with alcohol in her early teens. At age 14, her Dad died suddenly, and her Mom's mental health deteriorated as a result. Jess hosted parties and smoked pot. Since her family didn't talk about things, drinking was an escape. All her friends drank and smoked, so it seemed commonplace. At one point, she started skipping school, and her sister intervened. Jess slowed down and appreciated the attention from her sister. After high school, she took some random jobs and habitually stopped working, excusing her behavior with feigned sicknesses. She made lots of excuses but never addressed the root problem. She quit her jobs before she got fired. Her temper flared when her drinking hit a certain point, and she became a monster. Jess moved back in with her Mom to curb expenses, and her drinking slowed slightly. Six months later, she moved in with her boyfriend, and they were drinking buddies. Jess got pregnant and abstained throughout her pregnancy but picked up again as soon as the baby was born. She bought into the “mommy wine culture .”Her Mom had dementia. Being around someone with dementia was difficult, and Jess' drinking escalated. Eventually, she went to an online AA meeting and cried. She felt so welcomed. She counted minutes to hours, and finally, it got easier. She is now grateful to be present with her kids and is learning to like herself.
