Amid chaos following Hurricane Helene, hear how BIPOC journalists redefine community engagement by addressing urgent needs in western North Carolina. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description: Some residents had no food, electricity, or cell service after Hurricane Helene ravaged the western part of North Carolina in October. Amidst misinformation and no information, local media had to step in to inform desperate people fast. This month on “Meet the BIPOC Press”, we explore what media outlets did to serve their people in that moment. Laura and co-host Amir Khafagy, a journalist with the New York City-based publication Documented, speak with two local BIPOC media projects that saved lives and expanded their relationship with their communities. Our guests are Brooklyn Brown, Reporter for Cherokee One Feather, the local newspaper of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; and Magaly Urdiales, co-founder of JMPRO Community Media (“Justice Media Project”), a grassroots nonprofit that shares essential news and information with immigrant communities in Spanish, English and Mayan Indigenous languages. As they found themselves at the frontlines of relief efforts, how did these local outlets redefine journalism?“. . . Objectivity doesn't have to be cold. Reporting the facts doesn't have to be without passion. That's something I see a lot in community journalism, is that we are able to practice good journalism while also having a heart for the community that we're covering.” - Brooklyn Brown“I think many barriers and many problems of the corporate media came in place. We were called for people that were looking for a story, that were looking for somebody that was crying because their loved one wasn't found yet. And for us it was frustrated . . . in a moment like this, that can be transactional.” - Magaly UrdialesGuests:• Brooklyn Brown (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians): Reporter, Cherokee One Feather• Magaly Urdiales: Co-founder, JMPRO Community Media• Amir Khafagy (Co-host): Journalist, Report for America Member, DocumentedWatch the broadcast episode cut for time at our YouTube channel and airing on PBS stations across the country Subscribe to episode notes via PatreonMusic In the Middle: Novalima remix of “La Voz” by Eljuri, courtesy of the artist. In this episode, Connor had the pleasure of speaking with Garrett of Nodle, a groundbreaking startup that utilises smartphones to create a decentralized network for various applications. They discussed how Nodle began its journey seven years ago, initially focusing on building mesh networks to facilitate communication in areas without internet access. Today, Nodle has evolved into a powerful tool for verifying reality, enabling users to prove the authenticity of images and data through a new app called Click. Garrett highlighted the importance of citizen journalism in the current digital landscape, where anyone with a smartphone can capture significant events. We explored the potential of Nodle's technology to collect and incentivize these insights, making it a valuable resource for media companies and AI firms alike. One of the key challenges they addressed was the difficulty in distinguishing between real and AI-generated content, emphasizing the need for reliable verification tools. They also delved into the technical aspects of Nodle's wireless network creation, which utilizes Bluetooth connectivity from smartphones to locate assets, such as stolen vehicles. This innovative approach not only reduces costs but also enhances the efficiency of connecting devices to the internet. Garrett shared his vision for a more open future, where smartphones can be utilized to their full potential, breaking free from the restrictions imposed by traditional telecom companies. We discussed the implications of this shift, particularly in terms of trust and decentralization, and how blockchain technology can play a crucial role in establishing a more scalable and reliable model. 00:00 - Introduction 00:11 - The Challenge of Verifying Media Authenticity 00:26 - Overview of Nodle's Offerings 01:03 - The Evolution of Nodle's Technology 02:21 - The Role of Citizen Journalism in Modern Media 03:54 - Using Blockchain for Media Verification 04:50 - Image Authentication and Metadata Security 05:26 - Wireless Network Creation with Smartphones 06:38 - Real-World Applications: Asset Recovery 07:33 - The Future of Connectivity and Microcomputers 08:05 - The Debate: Custom Hardware vs. Smartphones 09:18 - The Shift Towards a More Open Future 10:01 - Decentralization and Trust in the Digital Age 10:11 - Conclusion and Future Outlook Disclaimer: The hosts and the firms they represent may hold stakes in the companies mentioned in this podcast. This week, A'ndre chatted with Eliot Higgins, an award-winning journalist who founded the citizen journalism outlet Bellingcat, a fact-checking platform utilizing open-source intelligence focusing on international affairs. Eliot talks about his initial work studying the Syrian Civil War and the conflict in Libya, and how he was able to identify key war crimes from analyzing open-source and publicly available data. He describes the thought process that led him to found Bellingcat and gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the platform's initial investigation into the shoot-down of Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 by Russian-backed militias. A'ndre and Eliot discuss how Bellingcat and citizen journalism at large have operated in the context of the ongoing wars in Gaza and Ukraine, in addition to talking about the challenges of disinformation in its work. Eliot gives his take on AI-generated images and videos and if he's worried about the proliferation of such content, and whether governments have pursued him as a result of his investigative work.

It's no secret that many news sources suffer from bias and influence from special interests. As a result, average citizens are taking it upon themselves to report on the happenings of their communities and the world at large. How do large media corporations do at holding to their own ethical standards? And are these citizen journalists a better alternative?

When the heavens opened last weekend, some channels of official information closed. Emergency management agencies and the news media both copped criticism for lagging behind events - and behind social media feeds fed by citizens and ordered by algorithms. Can the content from the crowd in real time be harvested for a big picture the news media and the authorities alike can all use?

Prof. Bruce Mutsvairo, Professor of Media and Politics at Utrecht University, shares his insights on the role of social media and politics on the African continent. We discuss digital activism across countries, how structures like data bundles might lead to surveillance, and the growing role of influencers as reporters of news. The Special Issue call for citizen journalists is here (I'll update the link as soon as it's live!). Here are the studies we discuss in the episode:The Janus face of social media and democracy? Reflections on Africa (2020)Is citizen journalism dead? An examination of recent developments in the field (2020)

Scanner School - Everything you wanted to know about the Scanner Radio Hobby
Clayton runs “Moorpark Scanner”, a popular Facebook Page which is a citizen journalist style account. At only 20 years old, Clayton has an edge that many of us do not have when it comes to social media. His pages have a professional appearance and he understands how to bring attention to his photos and updates online. To help him monitor local activity, he has been able to trade his way up from entry-level handheld scanners to more advanced P25 radios. Pretty impressive! What You Need To Know Clayton first started out with the BC350A scanner and was hooked from the start. Where Clayton lives in Ventura, most transmissions are still analog Moorpark Scanner's Facebook page is targeted to an “older” audience while his Instagram looks to draw the attention of a younger crowd. When Clayton hears something on his scanner that might be newsworthy, he will often times head out and take photos. He has sold some photos and stories to stringer services Clayton has some tips to upgrading your current scanner into a higher cost radio. He was able to buy and sell his way from an entry level scanner into a BCD996. Clayton connected with someone on Radio Reference who was looking to trade his BCD536HP for a BCD996 series scanner because he found the screen was too difficult to see. Both Clayton and the other gentlemen were happy with the trade. Clayton received an upgrade to his 996, and the other party traded out of a scanner he wasn't happy with and into a scanner he wanted. ====================================
Welcome to Nepal Now. My name is Marty Logan. I'm back after a long break – thanks for joining me. Today we're doing something different. On Aug 21st I was at St. Xavier's College in Kathmandu, talking with journalism students about podcasting. Actually, I tried to keep the talking part to a minimum — our main task was to create this episode that you're listening to now. The theme of the session was: When you're a journalist, how will you do journalism differently? I was impressed with the ideas expressed by the students, who are between 18 and 22 years old, and still have three years of studies to complete. On the positive side, one noted the growing accessibility of global news, including during the Covid-19 pandemic. But others pointed out faults of Nepal's media, including the lack of female talk show hosts and the concentration of media in the capital, Kathmandu. They also offered many suggestions for improving the industry. One shared her passion for becoming a voice for the voiceless, another of covering stories about minority communities, and a third would aim to tackle fake news and misinformation. More than one student believes it's important to divert the current focus of Nepal's journalism from politics to other aspects of society. Other approaches, like storytelling and citizen journalism, were also offered as new directions. A quick note to say that the sound is more echo-y than usual today because we recorded in a classroom at the college. I forgot to record the questions during the session so I added them afterwards.ResourcesSt. Xavier's CollegeNepal Now social linksFacebookInstagramTwitterLinkedInThanks as always to Nikunja Nepal for advice and inspiration.Music: amaretto needs ice ... by urmymuse (c) copyright 2018 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. http://dig.ccmixter.org/files/urmymuse/57996 Ft: Apoxode
Motivated by the recent killing of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in occupied Palestine and what many have described as double standards in international media narratives on Ukraine versus the Middle East, The New Arab's States of Journalism series is a sustained, ongoing exploration of freedom, repression, and accountability in MENA and beyond, in global media landscapes. On this week's episode of The New Arab Voice, we're examine two stories from the Middle East and the ongoing struggle to secure press freedoms.First we explore the rise and repression of citizen journalists in Egypt. When the uprisings against President Hosni Mubarak began, numerous activists took it upon themselves to document the violations being committed, report on the changing landscape of the country, and the issues that mattered most to Egyptians. Since the overthrow of the president, online space and the abilities of citizen journalists have been severely repressed by the government of President Sisi. We spoke with Dr. Courtney Radsch (@courtneyr), a journalist and a fellow at the UCLA Institute for Technology Law and Policy. Courtney focuses on the intersection of technology, media, and rights, and is the author of Cyberactivism and Citizen Journalism in Egypt: Digital Dissidence and Political Change.Secondly, we examined the changes to press freedoms seen in Tunisia. The uprisings in Tunisia, and what followed after, were often held up as an example for the rest of the Arab world to follow. But, in the intervening years, the north African country has taken worrying steps back to a one-man rule system. Amid the political changes and uncertainty, Fadil Aliriza (@FadilAliriza) founded Meshkal (@meshkaltn), an online independent news outlet. We spoke with Fadil about Meshkal, the challenges they have faced, the changing media landscape in Tunisia, and what the future may hold for press freedoms in the country. You can purchase Dr. Courtney Radsch's book here. You can support Meshkal via their Pateron page. This podcast is written and produced by Hugo Goodridge (@hugogoodridge).
