When it comes to emerging technology, there's no hotter topic than artificial intelligence. Programs like ChatGPT and Midjourney are becoming more popular and are inspiring people to explore the possibilities of what AI can achieve — including when it comes to accessible technology for people who are blind or visually impaired. One of those people is Saqib Shaikh, an engineering manager at Microsoft. Saqib leads the team that developed an app called Seeing AI, which utilizes the latest generation of artificial intelligence, known as generative AI Dr. Cal spoke with Saqib about how Generative AI works, his firsthand experience using an app like Seeing AI, and how it helped improve his daily life. This episode also features Alice Massa, an occupational therapist at Lighthouse Guild. Alice described the many benefits of generative AI, and how it helps her clients better engage in their world. Saqib and Alice also both agreed that the current state of AI is only the beginning of its potential. They shared their visions of what it could achieve in the future — and it doesn't seem that far off.   The Big Takeaways: The Power of Generative AI: Saqib discussed the present condition of artificial intelligence and why generative AI is a massive leap from what came before it. With a deep data pool to draw from, generative AI can do so much more than identify items or come up with an essay prompt. It can understand and interpret the world with startling depth and expediency. Seeing AI: This app can truly put the world in the palm of your hand. It can perform essential tasks like reading a prescription or the sign at a bus stop — and even more than that! It can describe all the colorful details of sea life in a fish tank at the aquarium or help you order dinner off a menu. The app doesn't just provide people who are blind or visually impaired greater access to the world — it expands it. Embrace Change: There's understandably a lot of uncertainty about what role AI should play in society. However, Saqib Shaikh and Alice Massa insist that there's nothing to fear from AI, that the benefits far outweigh any potential drawbacks, and that as long as it's handled responsibly, there's a lot AI can do to help improve our lives.   Tweetables: “I had a client at the Lighthouse who really was very disinterested in doing anything. The only thing he did on his phone was answer a call from his pastor and call his pastor. And I was able to put Seeing AI on his phone. And his wife said the first time in two years, she saw a smile on his face because now he could read his Bible by himself.” — Alice Massa, Occupational Therapist at Lighthouse Guild “What if AI could understand you as a human? What are your capabilities? What are your limitations at any moment in time? Whether that's due to a disability or your preferences or something else, and understand the environment, the world you're in, or the task you're doing on the computer or whatever. And then we can use the AI to close that gap and enable everyone to do more and realize their full potential.” — Saqib Shaikh, Engineering Manager at Microsoft “I call my phone my sister because my phone is the person I go to when I'm on the street if I'm walking in Manhattan. The other day I was meeting someone on 47th Street. I wasn't sure which block I was on. All I did was open Seeing AI short text, hold it up to the street sign, and it told me I was on West 46th Street.” — Alice Massa “Some of the interesting things powered by generative AI is going from taking a photo, say from your photo gallery if you're reliving memories from your vacation, or even just what's in front of you right now. It can go from saying it's a man sitting on a chair in a room to actually giving you maybe a whole paragraph describing what's in the room, what's on the shelf, what's In the background, what's through the window, even. And it's just remarkable. I work on this every day. I understand the technology, yet as an end user, I still am surprised and delighted by what this generation of AI is capable of telling me.” — Saqib Shaikh   Contact Us: Contact us at podcasts@lighthouseguild.org with your innovative new technology ideas for people with vision loss.   Pertinent Links: Lighthouse Guild Together, Tacit Retissa Neoviewer State Tactile Omero Museum Emily Metauten Artist Page (Herminia Blue)

Your smartphone can see, hear, and speak—even if you can't. So it occurred to the engineers at Apple and Microsoft: Can the phone be a talking companion for anyone with low vision, describing what it's seeing in the world around you?Today, it can. Thanks to some heavy doses of machine learning and augmented reality, these companies' apps can identify things, scenes, money, colors, text, and even people (“30-year-old man with brown hair, smiling, holding a laptop—probably Stuart”)—and then speak, in words, what's in front of you, in a photo or in the real world. In this episode, the creators of these astonishing features reveal how they turned the smartphone into a professional personal describer—and why they care so deeply about making it all work.Guests: Satya Nadella, Microsoft CEO. For you this time Mario, Jakob and Tanja prepared lots of goodies and Bart was very busy with preparing 3 nice interviews which you can listen in the second half of this Episode. But before the interviews, let's check what's new in the news Section. New option called accessibility events appeared under accessibility settings in the newest version for Voice Over users on Mac and iOS. While potentially this can be a nice feature which could help developers to detect that the user is using assistive Technologies on their web sites, the option is concerned as a privacy issue for some users. Another very nice app called Voice Dream Scanner which is able to do very good and fast OCR recognition recently appeared on the appstore, so Jakob told us his Opinion about it. You can check out more here and listen to a podcast with demonstration of the Voice Dream Scanner. New update for NVDA appeared as well from NVAccess, and this time it fixes a few bugs found in the original NVDA 2019.1 version. Android Accessibility Suite 7.3 adds Screen Search, more continuous reading options. Next month many Europeans will vote on the European elections. However when we talk about persons with dissabilities, we have to make sure that the voting system in each countrey is accessible so we can participate in the elections as everyone else. Jakob, Mario, Tanja and Bart share their experiences about it from their perspective, and we are also bringing to you further links in the shownotes about this particular topic: EBU Statement on the European elections 2019 A fundamental right to vote: Removing barriers for people with disabilities EDF recommends 10 REASONS TO VOTE IN THE EUROPEAN ELECTIONS to persons with disabilities EDF petition European elections for all Last month in our previous episode, we covered the European Accessibility Act which in the meantime was adopted by the European Council. Bryan Fischler, host of the That Blind Tech Show and Jeff Thompson from Blind Abilities have a conversation with Anirudh Koul and Saqib Shaikh, two developers from the Microsoft Accessibility team working on the Seeing AI app. You will hear about the Hackathon where the seed was planted and how the team uses the users feedback to determine the changes and improvements that have been coming fast and steady. The Seeing AI app is a project and uses artificial intelligence is some of the featured channels. Short Text channel is like taking a glance at your mail. The built in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) picks up the text through the camera and begins reading instantly. The Document Channel does more traditional OCR work and has audio indicators to help assist centering the page content. The Product Channel has an audible signal to assist in location the bar code and the signal speeds up when closing in on the bar code with the iPhone’s camera. The picture is taken automatically and the database is searched and the data is read to the user. Instructions as well as ingredients are also read if available. The Person Channel allows the user to take pictures of individuals and tag them as the facial recognition feature will know and say that person’s name when using the camera and glancing around the area. This is where AI comes in. The Seeing AI app will also describe the person and guess the age. The Scene Beta Channel is a feature that will describe the photo taken such as a bench in a park, or a person walking a dog. Photos can be taken, or imported from the camera roll to have the app describe the image. They say this app in in it’s infancy and there is a lot more to come. One feature coming to the Seeing AI app that was disclosed is a Money Identifier. TBTS Special: Seeing AI Developers Anirudh and Saqib Talk App Infancy and Money Recognition on the way! With the huge response from the Blindness community the Seeing AI app available in the App Store has spread like wild fire and people are excited about the possibilities coming from the Microsoft Accessibility teams. Yes, this is a Swiss Army Knife of an App. You can follow the Microsoft Accessibility team on Twitter @MSFTEnable   The Seeing AI app is only available from the App Store.   Thank you for listening.   Follow That Blind Tech Show on Twitter @BlindTechShow Send That Blind Tech Show an email   You can follow us on Twitter @BlindAbilities On the web at www.BlindAbilities.com Send us an email Get the Free Blind Abilities App on the App Store.

Thanks to Microsoft's technology and resources, he's seeing that dream becoming reality, and is able to share that dream with us in the form of a free app. Jonathan Mosen speaks with Saqib about Seeing AI, then demonstrates the app and how he is already using it daily, including to transform his use of social media. There is a second service that has gone live recently [...]
