You ever feel like just makin' stuff? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice sit down with the master of making stuff – Adam Savage. They answer fan-submitted questions about creativity, MythBusters, engineering, and a whole lot more.NOTE: StarTalk+ Patrons can listen to this entire episode commercial-free here:https://startalkmedia.com/show/making-stuff-with-adam-savage/
Adam Savage has spent his life gathering skills that allow him to take what's in his brain and make it real, working with every material and in every medium he could fathom — metal, paper, glass, plastic, rubber, foam, plaster, pneumatics, hydraulics, animatronics, neon, glassblowing, mold-making and injection molding to name just a few. In 1993, Adam began concentrating his career on the special-effects industry, honing his skills through more than 100 television commercials and a dozen feature films, including Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Galaxy Quest and the Matrix sequels. A decade later, Adam was chosen along with Jamie Hyneman to produce and host MythBusters, which premiered on Discovery Channel in January 2003. Fourteen years, 279 episodes, 1,015 myths, 2,950 experiments, eight Emmy nominations and 83 miles of duct tape later, that version of the series ended in March 2016. A few years later, Adam hosted and executive produced MythBusters Jr. as well as a solo series, Savage Builds, for Discovery Channel. Today, Adam stars in and produces content for his YouTube channel Tested, including a popular build series (Adam Savage's One Day Builds) and behind-the-scenes deep dives into multiple blockbuster films (including Alien Covenant, Mortal Engines and Blade Runner 2049.) In 2019 Adam finished his first book, Every Tool's a Hammer, which is a chronicle of his life as a maker.
Andrew Sean Greer's novels include The Story of a Marriage, The Confessions of Max Tivoli, and a satire of the literary world, Less - which earned him the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2018. Now, he's out with the followup, Less is Lost, which catches up with the lovable Arthur Less as he and his pug travel across the country in a rusty camper van on a literary tour. Greer is the winner of the California Book Award, the New York Public Library Young Lions Award, and his work has appeared in Esquire, The Paris Review, The New Yorker, and many more. On September 20, 2022, Andrew Sean Greer came to the Sydney Goldstein Theater in San Francisco to be interviewed on stage by Adam Savage, the host and executive producer of MythBusters Jr. as well as Savage Builds on the Science Channel. The program begins with an excerpt from the audiobook of Less is Lost.
The joy of tinkering, making, and sharing is part of the human condition. In modern times, this creative freedom too often is stifled by secrecy as a means of monetization - from non-compete laws to quashing people's right to repair the products they've already paid for.Adam Savage—the maker extraordinaire best known from the television shows MythBusters and Savage Builds—is an outspoken advocate for the right to repair, to tinker, and to put creativity and innovation to work in your own garage. He says a fear-based approach to invention, in which everyone thinks secrecy is the path to a big payday, is exhausting and counterproductive.Savage speaks with EFF's Cindy Cohn and Danny O'Brien about creating a world in which we incrementally keep building on each others' work, keep iterating the old into new, and keep making things better through collaboration. In this episode you'll learn about:How cosplay symbolizes what's best about the instincts to make and shareWhy it's better to live in the Star Trek universe than the Star Wars universeBalancing the desire for profit with wide dissemination of ideas that benefit society and cultureBuilding a movement to encourage more people to be makers - and getting the law out of the wayThis podcast is supported by the Alfred P. This week we talk about some of the game announcements that came out of E3. We discuss the preview we saw for a new Science Channel show, "Savage Builds." We discuss some of the sequel disappointments at the box office this summer. We talk again about TV shows and falling behind again with even more coming out. We also have our usual digressions that take us places we don't expect.
We talk about the first episode of Savage Builds, Adam's flight training in Gravity's Jet suit, and his trip to this year's NOMCON. Plus, we talk a little about John Wick 3, Jon Faveau's new cooking show, and why Adam should watch The Raid.
I was fairly impressed with the first episode of Savage Builds, which is now airing on the Discovery Channel. It's basically a show that lets Adam Savage (from MythBusters) do whatever he wants. In this case, he attempts to build an actual real-life Iron Man suit. SPOILER ALERT: He mostly succeeds. This is accomplished by printing out Iron Man armor pieces in titanium and then adding the jet suit from Gravity Industries on top of that. Yes, there is a real-life flying suit.
Our guest this week is Adam Savage. Adam has spent his life gathering skills that allow him to take what's in his brain and make it real. He's built everything from ancient Buddhas and futuristic weapons to fine-art sculptures and dancing vegetables. Today, Adam hosts and executive produces MythBusters Jr. as well as a brand-new series, Savage Builds, which premieres on Science Channel in June 2019. He also stars in and produces content for Tested.com, including behind-the-scenes dives into multiple blockbuster films (including Alien Covenant, Mortal Combat and Blade Runner). He's also got a new book out called Every Tool's a Hammer. For show notes visit: https://kk.org/cooltools/adam-savage-tested-com
