In Part Two of our late-night conversation, Bad at Sports digs deeper into the remarkable trajectory of Kenny Schachter. From law school dropout to autodidact philosopher, from Sotheby's bidder to artist and teacher, Schachter traces the unlikely path that brought him into the heart of the art world — a place he insists remains strangely conservative despite all its pretenses of progress. The discussion moves between personal history and systemic critique. Schachter recounts the role of art in surviving trauma, loss, and addiction, and why surrounding himself with works by others has been both solace and education. He reflects on the stubborn conservatism of the market, celebrity crossovers from Johnny Depp to Julian Schnabel, and the tension between wanting freedom and the systems that resist it. For Schachter, art is both a lifeline and a way to comment on the world's chaos — a practice rooted in generosity, curiosity, and contradiction. This episode captures him at his most reflective and most biting, moving from humor to vulnerability and back again. Highlights • Schachter's first encounters with Twombly, Rauschenberg, and Frankenthaler at the National Gallery. • The shock of Andy Warhol's estate sale in 1988. • Dealer-to-dealer hustling as an unlikely entry into art. • Why “there are no rules” is his best definition of being an artist. • The paradox of an art world that markets rebellion but runs on tradition. This week on Bad at Sports, Duncan MacKenzie and Ryan Peter Miller find themselves in Chicago with curator Bianca Bova and the indefatigable Kenny Schachter — artist, writer, teacher, collector, and provocateur. What begins as a conversation about Schachter's exhibition at Old Friends Gallery — featuring chicken-assisted artworks and bronze casts forged in Slovenia — quickly expands into a meditation on the art world itself. Schachter reflects on his collaborations, his obsession with foundries, and his refusal to keep resources secret. The group debates the zero-sum mentality of the art market, why artists sabotage themselves, and how absurd projects (sometimes with actual chickens) can be the most serious acts of art-making. Equal parts candid and comedic, the conversation cuts across auctions, art fairs, and the everyday realities of teaching. Expect reflections on generosity vs. gatekeeping, the fragility of the art system, and what it means to make art that is more conceptual than commercial. Highlights • Chickens as collaborators and muses. • The foundry in Slovenia that casts Rudolf Stingel's panels. • Why keeping fabricators secret is a sign of weakness. • Auctions as democratizing, even anarchic, art spaces. • The necessity of art in a divided and compassion-starved world. Segment 3 & 4 - Joseph Schachter, founder and editor of the Schachter Energy Report and writer of the Eye on Energy Substack, shares his outlook for oil and natural gas - calling for near-term weakness below $60 as a “table-pounding buy” opportunity, a rebound toward $75–80 into winter, and longer-term multi-bagger potential in Canadian energy equities as LNG growth, infrastructure, and global demand drive the next upcycle. Today, I'm excited to introduce a guest who brings a unique blend of business acumen, community spirit, and a passion for sports: Corey Schachter. Originally from Buffalo, New York, Corey has called Georgia home for eight years and has lived at the Lake for the last four years. His move to the lake was driven by a desire to "simulate living on vacation" after his family grew unexpectedly to include five young children, the youngest being twins! Professionally, Corey owns and manages an automotive warranty company headquartered just outside Chattanooga, Tennessee. Beyond his primary business, Corey has taken on an incredibly unique project here at the lake: he owns and manages the Lake Oconee “Wild Things” baseball team. Inspired by a low-cost, family-friendly baseball experience he witnessed in Buffalo, he sought to bring a similar community activity to Lake Oconee. He acquired the “Wild Things" team in the middle of last season and relocated them to the Lake Oconee area. The team plays its home games at Lake Oconee Academy's baseball field, which boasts a turf field. A unique aspect of their league is that players use wooden bats. Corey emphasizes that the games offer "serious baseball" for young collegiate athletes aspiring to play at higher levels, with scouts attending games and past players having moved on to minor league teams. The team also features a celebrity announcer, "Lake Life Larry" Wax, who brings extra energy and family-friendly antics between innings. Corey is deeply committed to ensuring the team provides a positive experience, both for the players (many of whom are hosted by local families) and for the community, aiming for family-friendly entertainment and engagement. Segment 1 & 2 - Jeff Christian, Managing Partner at CPM Group, joins the show to discuss how the recently passed U.S. tax bill could significantly increase deficits and economic uncertainty, reinforcing long-term support for gold. He highlights strong global investment demand, particularly through gold ETFs, even as the metal trades sideways near record highs. Christian notes rising institutional short positions and the potential for physical market tightness around the August futures contract. Geopolitical risks and a surge in global money supply remain key catalysts that could drive gold and silver higher in the second half of the year. Click here to visit the CPM Group website to learn more about the firm. Segment 3 & 4 - Josef Schachter, founder of the Schachter Energy Report and Eye on Energy Substack, joined us to share his latest insights on the oil and natural gas sectors. He discussed why U.S. production remains strong despite falling rig counts, how efficiency gains like pad drilling and polymer floods are reshaping conventional oil, and why LNG demand and Alberta power needs may drive a natural gas rebound—especially for Canadian producers. He also highlighted key contrarian opportunities in beaten-down Canadian gas stocks, select dividend-paying oil equities, and ETFs like XLE and OIH if markets pull back to April levels. lick here to learn more about The Schachter Energy Report

Josef Schachter, President of Schachter Energy Research Services, provides insights into the oil market and Canadian energy sector. He discusses the impact of US tariffs on Canadian oil, noting that the weakened Canadian dollar can offset some of the tariff's impact, and that the US Midwest relies on Canadian heavy crude due to quality issues with Mexican oil and restrictions on Venezuelan imports. Schachter expresses optimism about buying opportunities in Canadian energy stocks, suggesting the market is bottoming out and forecasting $90 oil within a year. He emphasizes the importance of LNG potential for both the US and Canada and identifies value in companies involved in natural gas production and transportation. Schachter also touches on the political landscape in Canada and its potential effects on the energy industry, and advocates for investors to take advantage of fear in the market to invest in undervalued energy companies.

On Valentine's Day 2018, Max Schachter's life changed forever when his son, Alex, was murdered in the Parkland school shooting—the deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history. Since that day, Max has dedicated his life to preventing future tragedies, working with legislators, law enforcement, and school officials to improve school safety nationwide. The killer used an AR-15 semi-automatic, which he assembled in the school stairwell adjacent to the first floor classrooms. He fired the AR-15, which had an engraved swastika, 139 times. It is worth noting, several law enforcement failures occurred surrounding this horrific event. Max Schachter, the father of one of the victims, Alex Schachter, joins me on this episode of Some Future Day. Since the mass shooting, Mr. Schachter has elevated to become the preeminent mind surrounding school safety. But he is way more than simply a national school safety advocate. Max Schachter is a brave, fearless, and tireless soul who will never stop fighting for his son Alex and all the other victims and families of school shootings. In this episode, you'll learn about: The heartbreaking story of Alex—his passions, his dreams, and the life that was stolen. How the system failed to stop a known threat and the culture of leniency that allowed it to happen. The hard truths about school safety, leadership failures, and what must change. What Florida has done right and how other states can follow.Practical steps parents can take today to protect their children. This is a conversation about grief, action, and a father's relentless mission to make sure no other family endures the pain he has suffered.Order Marc's new book, "Some Future Day: How AI Is Going to Change Everything"Sign up for the Some Future Day Newsletter here: https://marcbeckman.substack.com/Episode Links:Max's Website: https://www.maxschachter.com/Max on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/maxschachter/https://www.linkedin.com/in/maxschachter/To join the conversation, follow Marc Beckman here: YoutubeLinkedInTwitterInstagramTikTok
Happy Satiated Saturday! I take a different approach to body image healing. I apply the same explorations I do with food from a somatic perspective to body image. I started to wonder why is it that you can look in the mirror and love what you see one day and then later that day or the next day look in the mirror and feel like everything needs to change. Your body did not change within 24 hours. The answer is your nervous system. You will perceive your body differently based on your nervous system state. Often body image worries increase when you don't feel safe. In this week's Satiated Podcast episode, I chat with Deb Schachter, author and Boston's leading clinicians in body image and eating disorder recovery, about: Navigating bad body image momentsThe role of relationships in body imageWhat your body is trying to tell you through body image concernsAn internal family systems perspective on body imageThe importance of connection and community on this healing pathYou can also read the transcript to this week's episode here: https://www.stephaniemara.com/blog/bad-body-image-momentsWith Compassion and Empathy, Stephanie Mara FoxKeep in touch with Deb: Website: https://debschachterlicsw.com/ https://bodyimageinsideout.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bodyimageinsideout/ Book-Body Image Inside Out: https://amzn.to/4hQdLNaSupport the showKeep in touch with Stephanie Mara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_stephaniemara/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafoxWebsite: https://www.stephaniemara.com/https://www.somaticeating.com/Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephmara/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@stephaniemarafoxContact: support@stephaniemara.comSupport the show:Become a supporter: https://www.buzzsprout.com/809987/supportMy favorite water filter: https://www.pureeffectfilters.com/#a_aid=somaticeatingReceive 15% off my fave protein powder with code STEPHANIEMARA at checkout here: https://www.equipfoods.com/STEPHANIEMARAUse my Amazon Affiliate link when shopping on Amazon: https://amzn.to/448IyPl Special thanks to Bendsound for the music in this episode. ...

Focusing during wartime with Dan Schachter on The Living Process with Greg Madison. E29 Welcome to this episode of The Living Process, following quite soon on the last episode because of the topical nature of my conversation with Dan. In our conversation, we speak mainly about the experience of living within the conflict between Israel and Palestine. We also talk about Dan's gradual transition from psychoanalysis to experiential therapy back in the early 1990s. Dan has trained in Somatic Experiencing and EMDR and works in a trauma clinic as well as privately. We touched on what it is like to work as a clinical psychologist with clients who might have a very different perspective on the war going on around them. What it is like to be living in a society that is undergoing such a deep crisis which all clients and therapists are affected by on a daily basis? Dan talks about how crucial felt sensing, TAE, and Gendlin's underlying experiential philosophy have been as a resource in his attempts to navigate the complexity of feelings and attitudes amongst Israelis. We acknowledge how difficult it is to hold the tension between one's own truth and wanting to remain open to the nuances of other opinions with an awareness that even in this podcast we are inevitably stepping into this minefield of judgment and criticism. Dan mentions his participation in PsychoActive, a mental health group for human rights opposed to the occupation of Palestinian territory, and how taking such a stance does not close him to being curious about other ways of experiencing all that is happening in his region of the world. Dan Schachter, Is originally from Norway and has lived in Israel for many years, speaking English, Hebrew, and Norwegian fluently. Dan is a Focusing coordinator, a Focusing Oriented Therapist, and a clinical psychologist in private practice. He teaches Focusing, TAE (Thinking at the Edge) and the philosophy of the implicit and is well known in the Focusing community for his contributions to various projects including the International Focusing Institute Certification Weeklong core faculty. Allie Schachter, Democrat candidate for Burlington City Counsel - East District, joins Kurt & Anthony to discuss her campaign.
What if instead of trying to make your negative thoughts and feelings about your body go away, you allowed them to guide you towards what your body image is telling you? You see, our bodies contain a wealth of wisdom and guidance for us, and if we get curious and turn inwards to explore what is beneath the surface, we just might be able to embrace a gentler and more collaborative relationship with our bodies. In this episode, my guests Deb Schachter and Whitney Otto are sharing their “Body Image Inside Out” approach that highlights ways to explore, rather than “fix” your body image, and it's going to blow your mind (in the BEST possible way). Episode Highlights -Understanding the hope that we cling onto with self-hatred (and how this functions like a life raft for us at times). -Strategies you can apply right away to “decode” what your body is telling you. -Tools to transform your perception of your body as an enemy, to an ally. Once upon a time, when MTV played music videos, their more mature sister channel, VH1, had a show called “Where Are They Now”. The idea behind the show was to track down notable artists of previous generations to see where life had taken them once they'd stepped out of the spotlight. OK boomer, what does this have to do with the indieverse specifically, and the culture of technology more broadly? In most creative fields, whether it's art, fashion, architecture, etc., there's a deeply held sense of respect, even reverence, for the innovators who came before. The breadcrumbs of insights and artifacts or creation serve as a foundation of reference points for those who come after. But tech, as a creative field, feels different. Always forward, never back. There's frequently disregard, even contempt, for the innovators who came before. I often say we have the raw materials for any number of possible futures. Breakthroughs in AI, energy, chip design, crypto, biology — the future has never been brighter. As excited as I am to charge forward, I thought it would be valuable to look back. When I entered the venture market, it was in the wake of the dot com crash. Shortly after, my partner, Tim, popularized the term Web 2.0. Then, as now, there was a deep sense of hope starting to swell in technology. There were lessons to draw from and infrastructure to leverage to build upon, in addition to a renewed sense of optimism for the role technology could play in our lives. As we enter a similar moment in tech, I wanted to return to some of the innovators of Web 2.0 to see if there were any lessons to glean from their experiences, and to celebrate their contributions to the progress we're building on now. The first of these came up in our conversation with Charles from Are.na earlier this year. He and his team and had drawn inspiration from a popular Web 2.0 called Del.icio.us, known primarily as a shared, social website bookmarking service. I have known and respected its founder, Joshua Shacter, for years. We decided to trek to Mountain View for a catchup with Joshua on his past learnings and current projects. Joshua built Del.icio.us as a side project while working at Morgan Stanley, evolving it from his earlier project called Meme Pool. He didn't set out to build a startup - it was simply a tool to manage his own bookmarks that grew organically to millions of users. Within less than a year of raising funding from Fred Wilson at USV, Del.icio.us was acquired by Yahoo, where Joshua experienced the challenges of corporate bureaucracy and struggled with the loss of control over his product. The Web 2.0 era allowed for more experimental approaches, whereas today's entrepreneurs are highly focused on specific business opportunities, particularly in areas like AI tooling for business functions. Joshua believes that the current AI revolution has reset computing to a pre-6502 type era where fundamental architectures are still being determined, making it an exciting and challenging time for founders who need to balance innovation with market demands. When investing, Joshua looks for founders who are perpetually unhappy with their tools and constantly seeking improvement. He prefers to invest in weird ideas that make him think, “I never would have thought of that”, rather than incremental improvements to existing solutions. His approach is fundamentally engineering-driven, and he values founders who can engage in deep technical discussions. This one was a ton of fun. It's a new format for us, so be gentle with the feedback. We've already learned so much and hope to improve on it. We have a few more of these in the can and a few more lined up for the new year. If there's someone you'd love to see us catch up with, shoot us a reply with suggestions. As always, if you or someone you know are working on something that could be a fit for the indieverse, we're always on the hunt for our next investment. Finally, from all of us to all of you, wishing you the happiest of holiday seasons.
“ Body image is an individual sport and it's healed in connection.”If you're a woman, chances are you've had a moment (or many) of negative self-talk about your body. We've all been there. But what if the issue wasn't actually our bodies at all? What if it's a deeper emotional or psychological distress showing up in how we think and talk about ourselves? Enter Deb Schachter, a therapist, author and body image expert who's helped countless women untangle the hidden layers of their body image struggles—and she's here to help us do the same.In this episode, Deb joins Erin for a fascinating deep dive into the complex world of body image. From the stories we tell ourselves to the societal and familial messages we've absorbed, they explore how we can begin to rewrite the narrative and build a healthier, more compassionate relationship with our bodies. Tune in as we discuss:Why negative body image might actually be your mind's way of flagging emotional or psychological distress—not a physical problem to fix.The impact of family messaging and conversations about body size, and how they can fuel harmful beliefs.Understanding why you want a “better body” is more important than chasing the “better body” itself. How true fulfillment comes not from achieving the ‘ideal' body, but from nurturing your relationship with yourself and tuning into your inner voice.Practical ways to shift your self-talk from body criticism to observing and reframing your negative thoughts. The role of stories, relationships, and family dynamics in shaping how we see our bodies—and how we can break free to reclaim our authentic selves.Tips for creating a safe, judgment-free space for kids to share their thoughts on body image.OUR GUEST: DEB SCHACHTER is recognized as one of Boston's leading clinicians in the areas of body image and eating disorder recovery.
