Hi everyone! The complications of Ireland/U.S. migration isn't lost on any professional that has a stake in making the move work. Knowing how to treat both countries from a financial perspective is difficult - especially for those of us making the move!In Part 2 of my conversation with Sean Kearney of Amvoy Wealth, we dig even deeper into the complexities of financial planning for Irish expats in the U.S. and those with cross-border lives. Sean shares some sharp insights on managing investments, avoiding the pitfalls of overly complex tax schemes, and his core philosophy: living life first and aligning financial plans around it. We also get into the nitty-gritty of ensuring tax compliance and explore the underestimated value of planning for a possible return to Ireland. Sean's experience and understanding of U.S.-Irish financial management shines through, and his advice is a must-hear for anyone navigating finances in both places. This episode is a reminder that financial planning is not about cutting corners to save every last cent in tax, but rather about creating a meaningful roadmap that supports the life you want. If you're an expat or have assets on both sides of the Atlantic, Sean's practical tips can make the complexities of cross-border financial life much easier to manage.Topics mentioned in this episode:Balance Life Goals with Financial Plans: Sean advocates planning for the life you want rather than obsessing over tax efficiency alone. Prioritize lifestyle needs, then find the best way to align your finances.Understand Tax Compliance and Reporting Requirements: For U.S.-connected individuals, understanding reporting requirements in both countries is critical, especially as financial data-sharing between the U.S. and Ireland grows.Consider the Impact of Currency and Tax Rebasing: Before moving back to Ireland, rebasing investments in the U.S. can save significant tax costs due to currency fluctuations and different tax structures.Plan Early if Considering a Move Back to Ireland: For those hoping to return to Ireland, early planning is crucial, as it can mean the difference between a smooth, tax-efficient transition and an unexpected financial hit.Project Management in Financial Planning: Cross-border financial planning often requires a team approach, incorporating tax, estate planning, and investment advice to ensure every angle is covered.Contact Sean:Email: sean@amvoywealth.comWebsite: https://www.amvoywealth.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-kearney-cfp%C2%AE-870763199/*****If you loved this episode or have a similar story, we'd love to hear from you! Hi everyone! The complications of Ireland/U.S. migration isn't lost on any professional that has a stake in making the move work. Knowing how to treat both countries from a financial perspective is difficult - especially for those of us making the move!In this episode, I sat down with Sean Kearney of Amvoy Wealth, a specialist in helping Irish citizens manage their US-based finances, understand tax obligations, and plan for future moves between Ireland and the US. Sean's expertise is second to none, and his insight into the realities of balancing US and Irish financial systems is both essential and eye-opening.In Part 1 of our conversation, Sean shares the basics of navigating dual tax obligations, the common missteps that Irish expats encounter in US financial planning, and why keeping everything above board (no matter how tempting it might be to do otherwise) is crucial. If you're an Irish citizen in the US, planning a move back home, or have financial assets in either country, don't miss Sean's advice on staying compliant, managing investments across borders, and the importance of early financial planning! And stay tuned for Part 2 in the next episode of Taxbytes For Expats! What you'll hear in this episode:The Importance of Cross-Border Financial Planning: Moving between the US and Ireland involves unique financial and tax implications, especially for Irish citizens holding US assets or green cards. Working with advisors who understand both systems can save you from costly mistakes down the road.Tax Consequences of Holding a Green Card: Many Irish expats seek a US green card but don't realize the potential tax consequences when leaving the US. It's critical to properly exit the US tax system and file necessary documentation to avoid future tax liabilities. Why Rebasing Investments Before Moving Matters: Selling or ‘rebasing' assets while still under US tax jurisdiction can often reduce capital gains tax, as US rates are typically lower than Ireland's. Proper timing here can make a significant difference in tax savings.Potential Risks of Unpaid Taxes and Undeclared Assets: Ignoring tax obligations on assets left in the US or in Ireland can come back to haunt expats, especially with increasing global tax transparency. Compliance is key to avoiding future penalties. The Value of a Cross-Border Advisory Team: Combining the expertise of Irish and US advisors who communicate directly can give expats clarity and security. This collaboration ensures compliance, optimizes tax strategies, and aligns with personal and financial goals across both countries.Contact Sean:Email: sean@amvoywealth.comWebsite: https://www.amvoywealth.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sean-kearney-cfp%C2%AE-870763199/*****If you loved this episode or have a similar story, we'd love to hear from you! Richard Taylor and Sean Kearney are in the trenches, giving you the latest reports and their unfiltered takes on what's going in the world of investing and financial planning. Sean is the founder of Amvoy Wealth, an Irish/American financial planning and investment management firm based in Dublin and New York City. You need to understand dual taxation. The US and Irish tax systems shouldn't be viewed in isolation; Sean explains how they interact and how they can impact your financial planning. There are tough penalties for failing to comply with tax obligations in both jurisdictions – the penalties for not doing it if you're found out are pretty archaic, and they'll hurt your bank account far worse than complying. The three key takeaways from this episode: 1. Complexity of Dual Taxation: Understanding and managing the tax responsibilities in two countries is crucial. Kearney points out, "We pay CGT in Ireland, we pay CGT in the US. But how does that work together?"2. Necessity of Specialized Advice: The importance of obtaining specialized financial and tax advice is a recurring theme. As Kearney explains, many advisors may not fully grasp the intricacies of international tax laws which can lead to severe consequences. "There's lots of people out there that pretend that they know what to do and from my experience they don't."3. Proactive Compliance: Rich and Sean stress the importance of being proactive rather than reactive when it comes to tax compliance and financial planning. As Sean says: "It's better to be going talking to the IRS than the IRS come looking for you." This proactive approach can prevent severe penalties and ensure smoother financial operations across borders.Always an Expat is affiliated with Plan First Wealth LLC, an SEC registered investment advisor. Video game designer/faithful friend to animals large and small Sean Kearney returns to discuss ROCKETMAN (1997) that's decidedly NOT the Elton John biopic. What it is is a proof that Harland Williams is a great comedic actor but you need to take yourself back to 1997 to find the film funny. Links: Joe's Patreon Mr. Owl's Website
In 1981, clerk Tammy Osborne was abducted from her Mansfield Lawsons store and killed. A couple of days later, a Mansfield man named Sean Kearney was found dead in his apartment, a bullet wound in his head. Police guessed that the man had killed Tammy then committed suicide, but years later, an investigation into widespread police corruption found that conclusion unlikely. www.ohiomysteries.com feedback@ohiomysteries.com www.patreon.com/ohiomysteries www.twitter.com/mysteriesohio www.facebook.com/ohiomysteries Music: Audionautix- The Great Unknown The Great Phospher- Daniel Birch

Making the transition to remote work can be difficult. Hear from Sean Kearny, founder of UpGaged, and David Horne, principal at Honestly Co., about how you can make working from homework for you and your team. Thanks for joining us! This episode is sponsored by Truliant Federal Credit Union Visit Truliant here --------------------- Today's host is Brent Christiansen, the Chamber's President and CEO. 00:53 - In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we at the Chamber are working with community partners to mitigate its effects on businesses, both large and small. In lieu of our regular podcasts, we will be sharing highlights from our Daily Action Calls, where experts share information and resources for businesses to survive this unprecedented time. 1:28 - Brent Christensen kicks off the Daily Action Call by introducing today's topic of how to work remotely, how to manage and inspire your team from afar, and how to continue to be productive while we're in quarantine. 3:47 - Brent introduces Congressman Mark Walker, who represents NC's 6th District. Walker shares an update about how COVID-19 is impacting North Carolina right now and information coming from the White House. Walker also reviews the three phases of the federal pandemic funding, the details of what each phase of funding covers, and how those decisions are being rolled out. 12:45 - Brent introduces two other guest speakers; Sean Kearney, founder of UpGaged and David Horne, who owns several remote-first Greensboro-based businesses. 13:50 - Brent asks Sean what is different about this transition to work-from-home situation and how to navigate the challenges of adapting to a new way of working. Sean explains that all organizations struggle at times with remote work situations, especially in times of uncertainty and change. What's different about today is that everybody has been thrown into change - businesses, families, individuals, children - so we have to learn how to survive, care for each other, and adapt the best practices that no longer apply to this new situation. Sean emphasizes good, daily communication and ensuring people are acknowledged, heard, and cared for. 19:32 - Brent asks David about remote work etiquette that we should practice and be aware of. David explains bringing the same respect and patience as if your team were working together in a physical office. He emphasizes that communication is the most critical skill to practice in the move from real-time to asynchronous work, and to be considerate of how someone may interpret what is written to them. He recommends instituting boundaries and office hours, so we can balance work with quiet time. 24:30 - Brent asks Sean what are the best ways to keep a remote team engaged in the work that they're doing. As leaders of businesses, we cannot solve all engagement issues and this is a big challenge. Real engagement comes from interaction, rather than giving out directives. Constant status updates aren't always the best use of time; have a clear thought, invite your teams to give you feedback, interact between themselves, and build trust. 28:04 - Brent asks David about how remote teams build and maintain organizational culture. David explains that culture is built from people's experiences and interactions together. Embracing that from a remote standpoint means continuing to communicate, building in multiple touchpoints, creating effective processes that are productive but also build trust, acknowledging employees and good work. Planning unproductive time together is also useful - have a videoconference in the morning for a coffee and chat with your team. 32:50 - Brent asks Sean about his steps for setting up remote work processes. Step one, think of the five to ten people that others turn to for advice or help (whether that's employees, customers, vendors, etc.). This creates relevance in your messaging, because your trusted people are helping to build your message. Step two is to ask “how are you; what are you concerned about” and really listen to the answer. Make sure you fully understand so you can figure out how to help. Step three is to follow up with anyone that you believe has potential solutions. Review your notes and find patterns for solutions. Step four is to acknowledge concerns and fears, and then offer solutions and suggestions. Maybe create a short video to make it more human and accessible, share information from your trusted sources. Step five is to ask for feedback and comments from your viewers, employees, customers. Understand what you need to provide them in the remote work world and challenge your people to get uncomfortable and create new habits. 41:20 - What tools in the remote workspace work well to help teams continue to engage with each other? Sean talks about “bring your own” team tools, like Slack and Microsoft Teams, for internal communications and file sharing. David emphasizes finding the right tools for the business that people will actually use and not overloading on how many apps or tools are used. --------------------- Find links discussed in this episode and more resources related to COVID-19at greensboro.org/covid19.
