Our purpose is to contribute ideas, events and resources to support the development of the profession of Project Management. Dr Karen Thompson is a Senior Academic at Bournemouth University Business School in the UK. She is an innovative, award-winning educator who researches at the intersection of Project Management and Sustainable Business. Before joining academia, she worked in the field of information systems and technology in financial services, local government, and the voluntary sector. As an academic, Karen is co-founder of the Responsible Project Management movement that brings together researchers, educators, and project management practitioners from a range of industries. Her current research interests include the development of competencies for sustainable development, how projects are managed in refugee camps, and educational use of Lego® Serious Play®, Ketso Connect® and virtual reality. She is a Fellow of the Association for Project Management, Member of the Project Management Institute (UK), Associate Editor for Project Management Research and Practice, Fellow of Advance HE and Project Management Expert for the Centre for Project Management at the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Dr Nigel L. Williams, PMP is the Reader in Project Management and Research Lead in the Organizations and Systems Management Subject Group at the University of Portsmouth. Born in Trinidad and Tobago but now resident in the UK, Nigel worked in industry before starting his PhD in 2006 at the University of Cambridge. He has since worked in UK Higher Education. He is also the co-founder of Responsible Project Management (www.responsiblepm.com) and is co-editor of the forthcoming Handbook on Responsible Project Management. Nigel is an editorial board member of the journal "Project Management Research and Practice" and a member of the Education working group for Project Data Analytics. On Policy Forum Pod this week, we talk about refugees and asylum seekers policy – both in a global context and in Australia – while also discussing the extreme politicisation of these issues and the consequences that this has brought. From the scale of the global refugee challenge to whether Australia has got its refugee policy settings right, this week, we take a look at refugee and asylum seeker policies. The panel tackle offshore processing, the politicisation of refugees, the recent medivac bill, and how all these issues might play out in Australia’s upcoming federal election. Our presenters Sharon Bessell and Martyn Pearce, also take a look at government accountability, as well as social welfare schemes that may have been doing more harm than good. They also take a look at some of your questions and comments. This week’s panel consists of: Bina D’Costa is Senior Fellow/Associate Professor in the Department of International Relations in the Coral Bell School. She is also the school’s Deputy Director of Education. Bina’s research interests span migration and forced displacement; children and global protection systems; gender-based violence in conflicts; and human rights and impunity. Marianne Dickie is a Senior Academic in Migration Law with the ANU College of Law and an Immigration Case Worker for Senator Larissa Waters. As an academic, she regularly contributes to Senate inquiries, law reviews and public commentary. Prior to working at the ANU Marianne was the immigration advisor for the Australian Democrats. Mark Kenny is a Senior Fellow in the ANU Australian Studies Institute. He came to the university after a high-profile journalistic career including six years as chief political correspondent and national affairs editor for The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, and The Canberra Times. He joined ExxonMobil at the age of sixteen in 1979 and has worked in a number of roles spending the early part of his career at sea training as a Deck Officer. With no seagoing jobs available after qualifying he made the unusual move to be an accounts payable clerk, then moved into transport planning and onto a being a transport supervisor. He got into IT and projects whilst standing in for a systems analyst during a UK wide system upgrade in 1987. Roles followed as a Systems Analyst, Network Analyst, Infrastructure Coordinator, Quality Assurance Manager, Co-dependent Projects Analyst and Project Manager with the roles becoming wider reaching in geography, technology and responsibility. Types of projects worked on include the pilot for what became a global SAP implementation, a global server and desktop roll-out, and a global HR SAP system upgrade. He is currently the PM for the network device replacement program working with teams that span from Melbourne to Calgary, and also runs the Data Privacy Reengineering project with a US & Europe based team. Outside of work Duncan is a keen volunteer. He was a school governor for 13 years, was an executive on the Oxfordshire Governors Association for 5 years and has been actively involved in the Project Management Institute (PMI) UK Chapter since 2007. He was the PM for the PMI UK Chapter annual event in 2008 for which he picked up the PMI EMEA Volunteer Leader of the Year award. He was the PMI UK Chapter Communications Director for three years, then two years as the President and is currently the University Outreach Director. He is married to Vanessa and has two children, Robert in his second year at the University of the Arts, London and Nicole who is her first year at Cardiff Metropolitan University.   Raji Sivaraman     PMI Chapter Member Advisory Group (CMAG) Raji Sivaraman is a long time certified PMP (Project Management Professional) and has a Master of Science in Project Management. She is a citizen of Singapore and is currently living in Princeton, NJ. She speaks several languages and has worked in many countries including Singapore, Thailand, India, and USA. Spurred by concerns of sustainability, designers have been redefining design. New theories and ways of working have been emerging internationally over the past few years. Professor Anne Chick will discuss these important emerging territories of design and how they address larger societal challenges. Chick, after 10 years in design practice, became an academic to focus upon in the 'Design for Sustainability' agenda. She is author of numerous journal papers, book chapters and two books; The Graphic Designer's Greenbook (1992), and Design for Sustainable Change (2011). She was also an expert advisor to the Design Museum for their Sustainable Futures travelling exhibition (2010). She is currently Professor of Design and Senior Academic at the University of Lincoln (UK) as well as Visiting Professor at the University of Calgary, Canada. In 2009, Design Week magazine identified Chick as one of the most influential advocates of sustainable design in Europe.
