This is the second in a two part series all to do with Autumn Ill thrift in grazing ruminants. Part one (Episode 61) explored some of the nutritionally-based reasons that may contribute to animals appearing ‘ill thrifty' when pasture quality shifts from standing, poor quality summer pasture to very high quality, lush autumn green feed. The potential for animal-health related challenges to contribute to autumn ill thrift issues is covered in this, our latest episode. First up, the role for internal parasites to cause autumn ill thrift issues is briefly discussed (but acknowledging the excellent resources for managing internal parasites can be found here with NZs very own Wormwise programme here https://beeflambnz.com/wormwise ). Other topics tackled in this podcast include the role for ‘facial eczema' (sporidesmin toxicity), endophyte alkaloids found in ryegrasses that contain standard (but not novel) endophytes, growth of Fusarium spp. on autumn pasture thatch, and trace mineral deficiencies. Last but not least, we cover the potential for sub-clinical effects of high levels of nitrate in autumn pastures (and crops) to reduce feed intake and therefore animal productivity. This nitrate topic builds on a previous discussion of nitrate toxicity covered in one of our earlier Rumen Room podcasts, Episode 5. As always, animal health topics discussed in this podcast are of a general nature only, and information provided is not intended to replace the advice of your own veterinarian and/or qualified nutritionist.

It's the return of the big bangers! The Supercar circus is back in NZ, with two 200KM races set to tear around the pumice surrounded Taupo International Motorsport Park this weekend. The fans tears have all but dried up now, the mourning period for the old lady that was Pukekohe is well and truly over. There's a new kid in town, slap bang in the middle of the North Island ready to make its mark on the Aussie touring car series. The circuit, given more than a spit and polish by new owner and man behind the magnificent Highlands Park and Hampton Downs, Tony Quinn, is prepped and ready to shred the 24 strong grid. Tony Quinn has been a godsend for racecar enthusiasts here, a bloke who has been willing to pour his considerable wealth into the game up and down Aotearoa, a genuine fan and supporter of dare I say it, when you look at the proliferation of success stories behind the wheel globally, our national sport. Out the shadow of the death of NZs greatest motorsport philanthropist, Sir Colin Giltrap, Tony Quinn steps into the light. He should be celebrated; indeed, this weekend will be the party that he merits, hand in hand with the wake that Sir Colin deserves. The race weekend is something this country dearly needs, the district itself, is expecting an injection of tourist dollars somewhere in the vicinity of $6 million bucks on the back of 100,000 petrol-soaked tourists. The races themselves will be a treat as well, the Taupo circuit being a true test of the skills of the field. It's twisty AF, with varying surface conditions on a circuit new to most teams. The 5 Kiwi involved all have experience there, which gives them the upper hand, each character looking to fill the void left by van Gisbergen and McLaughlin. The weather looks to be wet and wild, another reason to give the locals a hand throughout the 400 km of racing. This is the dawning of a new era, based on what Quinn and his team have achieved, a long era at that. Locked in for 2 more years, one would like to think that this event will be the new pride and joy of not motorsports but NZ's international sporting calendar. That'll do.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

10-24-23 Tonight we're headed to the other side of the world, to New Zealand, to talk with Jay Bennett, owner and mead maker at Beehave! Craft Meadery, on the North Island, in Taupo. Jay lives in the center of the North Island of New Zealand and is the Mead alchemist and owner of Beehave! Craft Meadery. He lives in the bush at the southern end of Lake Taupo and operates the Meadery in the township of Taupo. In Jay's own words, He is an alchemist, a wizard and a guardian of the land. Jay first served product to the public in December of 2020 at NZs largest beer fest in Wellington - beervana……he had two kegs of his lemon and ginger mead, Suckerpunch, and left there with empty kegs and was voted in the top 10 of the peoples choice leader board. Jay had a pretty organic journey with 8 years of beekeeping which started with the capture of a swarm in the wall of his house to running 200 beehive...not enough to be viable, so in the search for products he could make with his honey, he came across mead and started making it in 5 liter carboys. During winter to supplement his non-existent bee income he drove trucks for a friend and listened to every podcast he could find on Mead making, including GotMead, and then put into practice what he was hearing. He made some pretty rough stuff to start with but had a couple of early good results that gave him hope. Jay saw the opportunity to bring something new and exciting into the NZ market place and set up Beehave! Craft Meadery in 2020. Beehave! is a nano brewery with 4000 liters of fermentation space and another 1200 of brite tanks. Jay built the current set up for easy growth with a massive glycol chiller and space for larger tanks. His goal is to have 12000 liters of fermenters. There is no culture of Mead in NZ so he is pacing the growth. This has morphed into being the only Mead brewbar in New Zealand and a range of both session and still meads including a non-alcoholic offering. As of last week, they now have created a collaboration with Texas Petes BBQ joint at the Meadery and as they head into a New Zealand summer they are looking to enjoy a successful time introducing more locals to Mead. Join us to see what Jay is up to and how things are going with Beehave! This player will show the most recent show, and when we're live, will play the live feed. The conversation (I refuse to call this a debate) rages on about Baby Will and his parents' decision to not allow him to receive blood from people who have received a vaccination. Today many experts weighed in including medical experts on what it would mean should the parents win to the system and medical professionals who explained why it's not just a simple thing to get blood for Will from unvaccinated people. Jordan Petersen, professional angry white man, has today made his latest angry statement about QANTAS daring to include some culture in their announcements on flights. Petersen, who believes strongly in the free market, but obviously still wants to control some private businesses and how they operate. Graham Philip pleaded guilty of sabotage and today he was sentenced to 3 years in prison. His supporters are a raft of NZs best known conspiracy theorists and while Philip admitted his guilt, showed remorse for his actions, and accepted his sentence the grifters are still trying to say he's been hard done by. Since his sentencing more details are now in the public domain as to what he actually did, we'll look at the tonight

In this wide ranging chat Mike gives us the exclusive details of a run based fundraiser he is embarking on in 2023. We talk about his life- the early years, his life as a chef and how he became NZs most popular comedian.  In the last quarter we get into the mental health stuff, and we go real deep on that stuff in part 2. Mikes a guy that knows his stuff, just from talking to so many thousands of New Zealanders.  So I really hope there are some takeaways in here that all of us can use. It was awesome to catch up with a man who is one of NZs most promising locks, who has a real point of difference with this power game and incredible skill set. From growing up on the East Coast of NZ, it's easy to see where Izzy gets his laid back attitude from. It was also cool to hear about how he found the adjustment into professional rugby as a teenager playing for NZ schools, NZ 20s, Wellington Lions and training with the Hurricanes before 20. Now 25 Izzy is one of the Hurricanes most experienced forwards, he's moved up to Hawkes Bay for the NPC and has been a consistent member of the Maori All Blacks.
