The Medical Professionalism Questions That Need to Be Addressed

Healthcare Experience Matters

Rob Minkes, MD, PhD, MS-LOD, and Robert Eisinger, PhD, both coaching faculty members at the Healthcare Experience Foundation (HXF), join us on our weekly Healthcare Experience Matters Podcast to address some of the lingering questions surrounding medical professionalism. Vagueness of Medical “Professionalism” Last month, the New York Times published an article that caught our attention here at HXF entitled, The Unbearable Vagueness of Medical “Professionalism.” The article explores the evolving concept of professionalism in medical education and clinical practice, and the challenge of dealing with vague standards of professionalism, often resulting in disciplinary actions that disproportionately affect students of color. These standards extend beyond traditional behavior to include appearance and social media activity. The response led to a viral movement (#MedBikini), prompting a retraction of a newspaper criticizing unprofessional social media content. The history of professionalism in medicine reflects efforts to uphold ethical values amid changing healthcare landscapes. However, concerns persist regarding the subjective nature of professionalism assessments and their impact on diversity within the medical field. With ongoing debates about dress codes and social media conduct, this article underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of professionalism that reflects the diverse identities and experiences of healthcare professionals and patients alike. The full Times article can be found here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/19/health/medical-students-professionalism.html The HXF Response Dr. Minkes and Robert responded to the article and ongoing debate with lack of clarity on medical professional as such: Doctors and nurses have answered a calling to care — specifically, in healing the sick. They don't think about whether their off-duty attire meets traditional definitions of appropriateness, even though some people think that is what defines or constitutes “professionalism.” But larger questions remain. How do we train medical professionals to be leaders in their field — to commence difficult conversations about death, to manage C-suite demands and requests, to work as a team with others, or to assuage patients' concerns in a way that fosters compassion and trust? Hospital executives and medical staff leaders who invest in professionalism training will be rewarded with happier, healthier patients, and doctors and nurses who bring joy and love to their work. The letter to the editor from the HXF Team can be found here: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/27/opinion/medical-professionalism-doctors-nurses.html?unlocked_article_code=1.f00.b0T_.gkexPpDIGhF5&ugrp=u  About Today's Speakers Dr. Minkes currently serves as Physician Coach with HXF. He is a board-certified general and pediatric surgeon who previously practiced as a pediatric surgeon for over twenty years in academic and private practice settings. He is also a professor and Chair of Specialty Medicine with Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM). Robert Eisinger is Chief Academic and Administrative Officer with HXF. A political scientist by training (B.A. Haverford College, M.A., Ph.D. University of Chicago), Robert began his leadership journey teaching and writing about public opinion, and the intersection of political institutions and behavior. He brings more than two decades of higher education and private sector experience to the HXF team. Today, Hunter spoke with Deepak Budwani, the Chief Financial and Administrative Officer of the Santa Barbara Public Defender Office to discuss how he was able to grow the office 80% in just five years. Long time listeners of the show will know the emphasis on data collection and data analysis, and Deepak is the model for why those things are a must for public defense. In just under 90 days, Deepak helped open a new PD office in Idaho, and by taking the mindset from his time in the public sector, Deepak quickly grew that office by 50% in just three years. None of these massive success stories could have been possible if Deepak didn't understand the importance of creating and utilizing systems and processes that could capture the data he needed to make meaningful budget requests!     Guests: Deepak Budwani, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer, Santa Barbara Public Defense Resources: Contact Deepak https://www.linkedin.com/in/deepak-budwani-57827042 DBudwani@countyofsb.org     Contact Hunter Parnell: Publicdefenseless@gmail.com  Instagram @PublicDefenselessPodcast Twitter                                                                 @PDefenselessPod www.publicdefenseless.com  Subscribe to the Patron www.patreon.com/PublicDefenselessPodcast  Donate on PayPal https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=5KW7WMJWEXTAJ Donate on Stripe https://donate.stripe.com/7sI01tb2v3dwaM8cMN

“Cultures are not just based on what we measure and how we reward, but they're based on storytelling. At the end of the day, a culture is really just ‘what do we care about and equally what do we not care about'”, says Tom. “We don't care about bureaucracy, we don't care about hierarchy, we don't care about titles. We do care about creating an empowered organization, where everybody can bring their true authentic self to work.”Tom shares his journey, from being in HR his entire career with roles in banking, high tech and insurance to joining the Skyward team in June 2020. He highlights the contribution he has made from the company rebrand to the first successful IPO of 2023, all supported by the passion, enthusiasm and vision of CEO, Andrew Robinson. “We had the opportunity to build the company we always wanted to work for. I've worked for large companies, small companies are a lot more fun. It's like it's like being the captain of a speed boat versus the captain of an aircraft carrier. We can turn on a dime.”Tom discusses the IPO process and its impact across the organization. “It's been a tremendous boost to all of our staff. We shared in the celebration with our entire team. Every single employee received equity in the company as part of the IPO”Tom talks about building a wining culture and cascading information and key objectives to the entire team in a consistent way. “What that means is every single person understands what they need to do in order to contribute to the success of Skyward Specialty.”He emphasizes how hiring is based around hiring in the model of the ‘go forward' organization, where people can truly practise their craft. “People don't want to be encumbered by a bunch of bureaucratic rules. Super accomplished individuals – whether that's underwriting, claims or the various support functions - want to be able to bring their expertise. They want their ideas heard, they want to be able to contribute.”Tom highlights Skyward's approach to hiring exceptional talent and encourages applicants to know that interviews are a two-way process. “I always encourage candidates to interview us and understand if this is the right environment. We give candidates an opportunity to meet a number of different people and ask the same question to different people and see if they get the same answer.”Tom concludes by sharing an interview experience that has stuck long in his mind. “Education, skills, competency, that's table stakes. Character, drive, work ethic and never ever giving up is what wins the day. And that's what we look for in candidates.”Connect with Tom Schmitt on LinkedIn or find out more about Skyward Specialty InsuranceThe Insurance Coffee House Podcast is hosted by Nick Hoadley, CEO, Insurance Search, the Executive Search Consultancy for growing Insurance and Insurtech businesses around the globe. To discuss identifying & attracting the very best talent to your team or being a podcast guest, reach out to Nick via nick.hoadley@insurance-search.com Copyright Insurance Search 2023 – All Rights...

Learning early on in life that you can do anything until someone tells you you can’t, Felice Gray-Kemp’s experience as a young, inquisitive, intelligent African American girl taught her how to navigate spaces fraught with peril.  Raised by strong women, Felice learned early on the importance of being true to herself and recognizing her own strength. Felice is a business and legal executive with expertise in U.S. and international commercial law. She has served as a legal business partner for public, Fortune 500 industrial, technology and iconic consumer product companies as well as closely-held and privately-held entities including as Chief Legal and Administrative Officer of a company that she founded. In 2021, Felice joined CaaStle as a member of its senior leadership team.  As a Yale alumni, Boston University School of Law graduate, and Fellow at the University of Connecticut School of Law  Felice’s commitment to continued education does not stop with her own. Having gone over many barriers, she is passionate and committed to deconstruct each one of them.  This is a passion born in part of her own experience in the over a dozen roles (including promotions) in which she has been “the first” of many descriptors--most often, the first person of color, African-American, woman or African-American woman in every professional position that she has held. Her hope is that, in her lifetime, such descriptors will rarely apply to any individual.    What You Will Hear in This Episode Felice’s early childhood experiences and influences Social justice Reinvention False barriers and guide posting that we set up for ourselves. Dan will be a Loras College Duhawk for life but is currently thriving as a DePaul Blue Demon after making a few pit stops on the journey in between. Dan and Brent dig into some really important questions during this conversation. Is higher education really leveling the playing field? Why do many talented, academically-prepared students not apply to institutions for which they're qualified and would likely do very well at? What is the relationship between preparation and privilege in college choice? (Dan completed his PhD on this topic, so he has lots of wisdom to share.) As soon as COVID hit last year, Dan and the leadership team at DePaul decided that if they didn't raise more money in FY21 than FY20, it sure as heck wouldn't be because they didn't try. Tune in to hear how Dan and his team are bucking national trends in donors in dollars through a proactive and hyper-focused commitment to DePaul's students.About DanDan Allen currently serves as the senior vice president for Advancement and External Relations at DePaul University. The United States has identified drug trafficking, drug use, and drug manufacturing as important issues -- domestically and internationally. In recent years, the opioid crisis has been at the center of many U.S. government efforts. Overdoses due to synthetic drugs have been on the rise for the past decade with fentanyl and its derivatives squarely at the heart of the issue. A BETTER PEACE welcomes Heidi Munro to the virtual studio to discuss how this once legal prescription painkiller has become a national crisis leading to criminal activity, tragedy for families across the country and a point of contention in international relations. Heidi joins podcast editor Ron Granieri to examine this issue's impact on national security, the military's involvement in possible management of the issue and where the nation goes from here. The military treats illicit drugs and narcotic trade as a crime, so it's a transnational crime. So because of that they don't really have a way to act on it. Heidi Munro is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Idaho Army National Guard where she is currently serving as the state's joint medical planner for COVID-19. She is also the Administrative Officer for the Medical Detachment and full-time clinician for the Office of the State Surgeon. She is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College resident class of AY20. Ron Granieri is an Associate Professor of History at the U.S. Army War College and the Editor of A BETTER PEACE. WHY by Marvin V. Blake “WHY”, is an epic story, 1838 – 1863, chronicling the lives of two sisters, one white, the other black, both born in 1847, three days apart, on Virginia’s wealthy Rosewood Plantation. The white sister is the child of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Billings, Master and Mistress of Rosewood, one of the richest cotton plantations in the state of Virginia. The black girl is the issue of the mating of Henry Billings, the Master of the Rosewood Plantation, and one of his female black slaves. While growing up together, one a slave the other her mistress, in the slave holding antebellum South, sharing many childhood experiences, the girls are forced to adhere to the harsh rules, and laws that separate white from black. Henry and Margaret Billings, Master and Mistress of the plantation, hire a recent college graduate, Miss Eleanor Leary, a young progressive, Irish immigrant, to tutor their children, Rebecca and her brother, Jesse Despite her fear of breaking the laws that prohibit the teaching of slaves to read and write, Eleanor, at Rebecca’s request, decides to include the black slave girl Mandy in their sessions. A whole new world is opened for Mandy. Through the teachings and the eyes of the white teacher, Mandy slowly, gradually, discards her insidious, lifelong feelings of racial inferiority, and self-loathing. Feelings and assumptions that Mandy had harbored and accepted from birth were now being replaced by developing feelings of racial pride and personal self-esteem. The novel examines three co-existing 19th century American Cultures. The privileged world of the South’s antebellum slave holding, White Planter Society; The oppressed communities of the black slaves; and the noble, nomadic hunter-gatherer society of the plains Indians. The turbulent events of this time in American History, results in the two sisters finding themselves living in, and experiencing the three cultures, and one sister is forced to choose between her life-long love for her sibling, or the love that develops between her and a Comanche Warrior. Marvin was born and raised in Baltimore Maryland, in its’ then, racially segregated-housing projects. In 1957, three years following the Supreme Court landmark decision, i.e., Brown v. Board of Education, ruling that state laws establishing racial segregation in public schools as being unconstitutional, following his graduation from Cherry Hill Jr. High, at the insistence of his mother and the urging of one of his Jr. High School English teachers, Marvin was enrolled at, and subsequently, graduated from Baltimore’s previously all-white, Southern High School. One of Marvin’s fondest memories of high school was that during his senior year at Southern High, Marvin was chosen for 2nd Tenor, section leader of what he and his fellow choir members proudly thought of as; “The World Famous, Southern High School Acapella Choir”. After high school, Marvin enlisted and served nearly six years in the U.S. Navy. While stationed, serving as a Hospital Corpsman at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Saint Albans New York, Marvin met, wooed, and married his beautiful, brilliant wife, Linda. Marvin is a graduate of the United States Navy’s Hospital Corps School; the United States Navy’s School of Medical Technology; Long Island University (C.W. Post College); and the New School University. His professional career has been spent as a Senior Hospital Administrator in several of New York City and Nassau County’s prestigious teaching Medical Centers. In 2002, following the 9-11 terrorist attack on New York City, Marvin actively sought, and was subsequently offered, the position of Administrative Officer, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine for the New York and the Brooklyn VA Medical Centers. Marvin retired from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs at the end of October, 2012. “It was at my wife Linda’s urging (she later confessed …because after my retirement, I was constantly underfoot), that I decided to attempt to write a novel.” https://marvinblakeauthor.com www.booksbymarvinblake.com https://www.amazon.com/WHY-Marvin-V-Blake-ebook/dp/B00VUDF86M/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&qid=1592599138&refinements=p_27%3AMarvin+V.+Blake&s=digital-text&sr=1-2&text=Marvin+V.+Blake http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/mblake1.mp3

Guelph is no exception, and everything that the City is doing crosses the desk in the CAO’s office at some point. You may recognize Stewart as the guy who literally sits on the right hand of Mayor Cam Guthrie in regular order council meetings, but he's probably the person in local government with the most influence right after the mayor. The CAO is the only member of Guelph staff that is directly hired and supervised by council itself, and they often serve as an intermediary between the experts on staff, and the political direction of council. The job requires a certain mastery of all portfolios and departments at the City, but could anything prepare Stewart for responding to COVID-19? That's one of the questions put to Scott Stewart on this week's podcast, and he will also talk about how his job has changed with the demands of combating COVID-19. He also discusses the co-ordination between Guelph and its neighbouring municipalities, how the City is able to navigate directives from higher levels of government, and how much of the City’s reaction to COVID-19 is proactive versus reactive. Finally, he also talks about how much of the regular business of City Hall is proceeding despite COVID-19, and the most pressing problem that staff is facing at the moment.  So let's talk about how the COVID response is running through the CAO's office on this week's edition of the Guelph Politicast! For all the latest information about the City of Guelph’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, just go to the City’s website, and click on the red banner at the top of the screen. This a conversation getting to know a little bit about John King from Charles Town WV.   He is running for Sheriff.  I welcome anyone running for office to come on the podcast to discuss their platform and motivations. From John King's Facebook Page.https://www.facebook.com/JKforSheriff/"My name is John King, and I am running as an Independent candidate for Sheriff of Jefferson County. As an Independent Candidate, I had to obtain a large number of signatures to get on the Ballot. I would like to thank the hundreds of people who took the time to speak to me over the recent months in regards to my ideas for Jefferson County. In my opinion, the Sheriff should be non-partisan, and if elected I will be a Sheriff of the people for the people. Therefore, all Independents, Democrats, Republicans, and other political organizations are welcome and encouraged to support my campaign. I take the oath and commitment of being Sheriff sincerely as an act of giving back to the community. In fact, if legally possible I will defer half of my salary back to Jefferson County in order to circulate funding to other resources. My over thirty (30) years Federal Law Enforcement career with the United States Capitol Police in Washington DC has provided me with a broad and diverse background in the justice system with respect to vital operational and administrative features of government. During my distinguished service with the Department, I served as a Patrol Officer, Administrative Officer, Administrative Sergeant, Canine Sergeant / Handler, and Special Agent / Bomb Technician. While assigned to the Administrative Services Bureau, my duties included developing policy and procedures, special directives, information technology, budget, procurement, contracts with vendors, purchasing, and asset management. The operational experiences I obtained as a supervisor gave me the opportunity to write evaluations, work with Unions, personnel management, payroll, scheduling, project overtime, manage training, travel requests, and develop plans of action for Congressional protection missions within Washington DC and the throughout the United States. One of my greatest experiences as a Special Agent / Bomb Technician was working with the United States Government, Office of Special Technologies “Technical Support Working Group”, on Counter-Terrorism. The work consisted of assisting in overseeing millions of dollars in research and development programs to combat terrorism for First Respondents and the Military. Throughout my service, I was required to maintain various high ranking “Top Secret” clearances from the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy and the Central Intelligence Agency to accomplish specific tasks and projects as a trusted Agent. In the time I have lived in Jefferson County, the divisions within the Sheriff’s Office have been a pleasure to interact with and perpetually professional. If elected, my goal is to ensure our Sheriff’s Office possesses the best education, training, and equipment among our personnel. Within the goals I have set will hopefully increase and create constant preservation of safety and security of all personnel in the Sheriff’s Office who are providing the same qualities to residents of Jefferson County. I believe in doing so will ensure the necessary harmonious work environment to be at our most productive. If elected, I will ensure the Sheriff’s Office maintains the upmost integrity, ethics, accountability, honesty, transparency, diversity, fairness, and empathy in a professional manner at all times. The public deserves to have the utmost faith and confidence in the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The outreach to all residences, I believe, must be ongoing in order to build strong relationships and trust within the community.I hope this gives you a little background of my experiences and commitment to serve the citizens of Jefferson County. Over the course of my campaign, any questions or comments can be addressed here or E-mailed to johnkingforsheriff@gmail.com. In the future, I will be setting up meet and greet events and will continue to provide more information.Campaign Contributions or information should be addressed to:Friends of John KingP.O.
