*TRIGGER WARNING* Please join me and Brianne Coleman as she shares her story of resilience. Brianne Coleman, MBA, M.S., is a well-versed administrative professional with a deep passion for change. She currently works as an IT Operations Specialist with The Chicago Community Trust, a nonprofit organization with a mission to close the racial and ethnic wealth gap in the Chicago region. Not only has this work been super rewarding for Brianne personally, but it has also brought great purpose to her life. Over the last four years, Brianne has leveraged the relationships she has developed through her work and continues to develop, to lean more into her life's purpose of ending familial cycles of domestic violence and trauma. As a survivor of childhood trauma, sexual assault, and domestic violence spanning over 42 years, Brianne tirelessly advocates for victims/survivors through her public speaking, peer support and volunteer work. Brianne was a 2020 fellow of Disability Lead's Advancing Leadership program and is now a member of that prestigious network of disability leaders. In addition, Brianne was a 2021 fellow of the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence's Leadership Academy, which allowed her to strengthen her ties to the DV network in Illinois. In 2021, she began a multi-year journey to become a certified instructor of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), a key component of a trauma rehab program she developed that addresses the gaps in services provided to victims of domestic violence to include their children. Brianne holds two master's degrees, including an MBA and a master's in human services from Purdue, and is the founder of Dimensions of Intersections, an upcoming nonprofit with a mission to stop generational cycles of domestic violence and trauma. Brianne's vulnerability and transparency, combined with a timely spiritual awakening, have put her on the path to finding full survivorship in her life. She embodies gratitude in every facet of her life and embraces her experiences openly as a way to inspire others. Brianne leans heavily on her relationship with God to guide her on her journey and push her closer to living in her life's purpose.“In some ways, suffering ceases to be suffering at the moment it finds meaning.” – Victor Frankl Find her here:https://youtu.be/sz_xcglYiRo?si=E1VM9e5-hFAG2juF https://www.facebook.com/gingersnaps816 Someone out there needs to know they are not alone and that they can survive. Suggestions to keep 'YOU" safe during the holidaysThis time of the year is supposed to be joyous and happy but if you are a victim of abuse it can be a nightmare. You may have heightened stressors as you potentially experience any of these: Financial issues- lack of funds from overspending, job loss, or layoff. Getting together with family- While normally can be wonderful there could be pressures or conflict on top of dealing with your abuser. Increased alcohol/drug use- It is not uncommon for the usage of these to be more abundant. Vacation- Your partner or loved one may be off for an extended time causing more heated exchanges. What can you do?! 1) Keep your phone charged at all times. Make sure you have trusted contacts on speed dial. This could be calling: 911 in the States for immediate assistance- Teach your children this number too! Family or Friend- These can help pull you out of a heated situation or act as a witness. Consider using a "Safe word" such as Cookies or Eggnog for a text or while you are on the phone. This can alert the person that you need help NOW.Shelters and Resources-The Hotline - 1-800-799-7233 1-800-787-3224 (TTY) En EspañolSafe Horizon -1-800-621-HOPE (4673)NCADV - Resources page for National and International helpAbused Deaf Women's Advocacy Services (ADWAS) provides advocacy services for Deaf and DeafBlind survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. http://www.adwas.org/Sexual Assault Hotline- https://www.rainn.org/Suicide prevention- https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/International- https://internationalwomenshouse.org/get-help 2) Along with the safe word tip, if you have a good relationship with your neighbor think about having a certain color light that can be lit when if you need assistance. If they feel comfortable they may ring the doorbell or knock to check. They could also call the police for you to do a wellness check.3) Download a safety app such as - Circle of 64) If you are meeting your abuser for a visitation exchange contact a friend to go with you. If you can not find a friend, make sure this is done either in the daylight or in a public well-lit area. Contact your local police department and give them the short version of your situation and ask if they can meet for the exchange. They are happy to assist with this and will give you instructions on how to handle the situation. 5) If you are still with your abuser make sure you have an escape plan. Don't back yourself into a corner or room without a window. 6) Contact your local shelter for a Safety plan. You may not be leaving this second but empower yourself with knowledge of how to handle an escalated situation. 7) Consider having a "Go bag" ready just in case. You may want to keep this bag in an inconspicuous place or at a trusted friend's home. In this bag, you will have an extra pair of clothes, a 7 to 10 day supply of medication, extra keys to the house/car, snacks, a cell phone charger, and spare change. Be safe! Here are a few tips to consider when planning your holiday especially if you're traveling. Given itinerary to your friends and family. Check in often if you can. Keep important numbers on your speed dial or ICE on your cell phone. Walk away if possible. Minimize your time alone with your abuser or make sure there are people surrounding you to be as witnesses if need be. If you trust your neighbors ask if they can do a wellness check on you. It's not a sign of weakness and you are not bothering anyone. 4) Take time for yourself everyday! Even if it's for as little as 5 minutes. 5) Find a healing modality that works for you! 6) Know that's it's okay to feel love, grief, anger, or more. Allow yourself time to process those. 7) It's okay if you have a set back on your healing journey! Pick up where you left off when you recognize this. Consider having an accountability partner or joining a support group to keep that momentum going. If you just can't seem to move forward or are having suicidal thoughts please seek out a professional or contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Line for help. #healingjourney #traumahealing #trauma #domesticabuse #domesticviolenceawareness Someone out there needs to know they are not alone and that they can survive. Content Warning: We do discuss sexual assault and murder in this episode, but not in great detail. Still, we wanted to place a warning for those who might be triggered by such content. Here's the number for the Sexual Assault Hotline, for those who may need it: 1-800-656-4673. We all know the words: “In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses are considered especially heinous. In New York City, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Victims Unit. These are their stories.” That's, of course, the famous opening to Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, the television show that introduced us to the characters Stabler and Benson. In her novella, “Especially Heinous: 272 Views of Law and Order SVU,” author Carmen Maria Machado takes Stabler and Benson through a cosmic horror nightmare. It's a full 12-season journey, with ghosts.  Recommended in this episode: Kaiju movies (Gamera!) and Ted Lasso, season 2  Up Next: the 1944 film Laura, based on the novel of the same name by Vera Caspary Women in horror short film fest: www.13minutesofhorror.com  Please rate and review us, or better yet, tell a friend.  Our social media is @MonsterWrote on Twitter and Instagram. Our email is monsterwrote@gmail.com. This episode was produced and researched by Lisa and Mel. Theme music is “Misconception” by Nicolas Gasparini, used with permission.
