Tell Me More: the City of Kingston Podcast

Kingston, like cities across the country, is in a housing and affordability crisis that is compounded by insufficient addiction and mental health supports. These realities continue to put strain on the emergency shelter, transitional and supportive housing systems. These systems are part of the housing continuum, a conceptual framework that spans everything from emergency shelters to market housing. And to help us understand how the continuum guides supports and programs in the community, Jayne Hartley, Director of Housing and Social Services joins the podcast in the first of a series of conversations about municipal housing initiatives.  To learn more about how the City of Kingston is expanding housing options and working to improve service to people who are unhoused or precariously housed, visit our Strategic Priorities page. To find a list of housing programs, visit CityofKingston.ca/Housing.  Home Base Housing's Street Outreach team monitors homeless individuals. Today's Headlines: Vice President JD Vance met with India's Prime Minister Modi and urged Ukraine to accept a U.S. peace deal that heavily favors Russia, freezing current territorial lines and blocking NATO membership. Trump followed up by blaming Zelensky for stalled negotiations. Meanwhile, the administration is slashing programs across agencies: the FDA will stop testing milk for contaminants, the LGBTQ youth crisis line may lose funding, and Head Start is also on the chopping block. On the economic front, markets are volatile amid mixed messaging from Trump about trade with China and the future of Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Despite saying he won't fire Powell, Trump is pressuring him to lower interest rates. A dozen states are now suing the administration, claiming its tariff policy is unconstitutional. And in New York, Harvey Weinstein faces a new trial for sexual assault, pleading not guilty as his attorney bizarrely claimed “the casting couch is not a crime scene.” Resources/Articles mentioned in this episode: NY Times: Vance Outlines U.S. Plan for Ukraine That Sharply Favors Russia NBC News: Trump slams Zelenskyy for rejecting Ukraine-Russia negotiations, saying a deal was 'very close' The Guardian: FDA suspends milk quality-control testing program after Trump layoffs | US domestic policy Axios: LGBTQ+ youth suicide hotline among proposed HHS budget cuts NBC News: Markets close higher — but see bigger gains evaporate — as the Trump administration signals softer trade stance Ap News: A dozen states sue the Trump administration to stop tariff policy  NBC News: Markets close higher — but see bigger gains evaporate — as the Trump administration signals softer trade stance NBC News: In retrial openings, prosecutors portray Harvey Weinstein as a powerful mogul who ‘preyed' on women Morning Announcements is produced by Sami Sage alongside Bridget Schwartz and edited by Grace Hernandez-Johnson Learn more about your ad choices. What does a crisis look like? It's up to youth and their families to define that answer. One thing, however, is for sure: Crisis is never convenient. Crises don't pick the most opportune time and place to strike, and so for any help to be effective, it needs to be flexible - and in many cases, mobile. When your brain goes off the tracks, getting help is much more feasible if someone can come to you... someone like Compass Health Program Manager Rick Deluga. Rick Deluga manages the new Child, Youth, and Family Crisis Team in Snohomish County for Compass Health. He holds a Masters in Social Work, and previously worked with the Downtown Emergency Service Center - which led to the innovative Crisis prevention work he does today - including mobile crisis response for youth across the county. Students in Nathan Hale High's Podcast Club sat with Rick to discuss how he got into this unique line of work, explore what crisis can look like, and identify actionable ways to get help when and where it's most urgently needed.  Presented by c89.5 in partnership with Seattle Children's, Coping 101 is an ongoing series led by students in Nathan Hale High School's Podcast Club that destigmatizes mental health from a teen's perspective, made possible with local support from 4Culture, Hansmire Builders, and Compass Health - NW Washington's Behavioral Healthcare leader.  Episode NotesHave you ever wondered any of these: What the science is behind creativity? What causes creativity in the brain? What part of the brain is used in creativity? Or maybe even how to activate creativity in the brain? In this episode Kate speaks with Dr. Cheryl Arutt a clinical and forensic psychologist based in Los Angeles, California working with actors, writers, directors and showrunners supporting their psychological well-being. A specialist in trauma recovery, creativity and post-traumatic growth, Dr. Cheryl is currently Access Hollywood's go-to psychologist for trauma issues, a frequent psychological expert on many networks including CNN, HLN and DiscoveryID, and has been interviewed by the BBC and 20/20 Australia.  For more information about Dr. Cheryl please visit askdrcheryl.com, and for info about her online courses for creative artists please visit www.thecreativeresilience.comDr. Cheryl explains how creativity works and what it even is from a Brain Science Perspective. We talk about the link between education and creativity. I ask her if we are doing enough to foster creativity & creating thinking in the school system? And she gives us some actionable things we can do at home for ourselves and our children to rev our own creative engines. One of my favourite moments though, comes towards the end  when I ask her about the possibility of the opposite of inheriting generational trauma existing. We know we can inherit trauma but can we inherit magical wonderful things too? We shared a really tender moment - one where I felt like she was talking to ALL of us. It's beautiful, uplifting and inspiring.  I think you'll be really moved by it. What Dr. Cheryl Arutt & I talk about-What creativity IS from a brain science perspective. -What is really going on inside our psychology when people say “I'm not creative”-Why processing trauma including intergenerational trauma, and converting it to post traumatic growth is so important (and is absolutely possible)-The link between education and creativity. Are we fostering creativity and creating thinking enough in the school system? And if we are seeing that our children are not getting as much focus on creativity in school what can we do at home? -What is the one question you can ask yourself (or your kids) to kick start your creativity (what is another way to do that/look at that/solve that)-How the “we only use 10% of our brains” thing is a myth-How to use creativity to safely access our traumas -What is EMDR (eye movement and desensitization and reprocessing therapy how it was discovered and how creative people can use it to heal trauma and access even more of their innate creativity-Post traumatic growth - learning to integrate and recognize all the ways you grew as a person as a result of living through your trauma-What she thinks creativity is trying to do - from a brain science perspectiveAbout Dr. Cheryl AruttDr. Cheryl Arutt is an accomplished clinical and forensic psychologist based in Beverly Hills, CA whose amalgamation of rigorous training and experience allows her to engage with people from a place of deep insight and empathy. Through compassion, skill and sometimes even humor, she helps her patients uncover what is in the way of living a full-access life, empowering them to move forward.Following over 20 years as a working actor, Dr. Cheryl's interest in human behavior shifted to psychology after volunteering on a crisis line. If you're a 35 - 55 year old woman, you grew up in the very particular cultural landscape of the pre-#MeToo era. You grew up with boy-centered stories like The Outsiders, Stand By Me, Goonies and The Lost Boys, the  everyday male violence and misogyny of entertainers like Andrew Dice Clay and Sam Kinison, and hypersexualized movies and music like Porky's and "Me So Horny" – LOTS TO UNPACK THERE. Time to revisit and tell our own stories. Emelia Symington Fedy's memoir, Skid Dogs, is a brave, bittersweet coming-of-age story about a group of high school girls in the '90s navigating friendship, sex, and parents from the retrospective view of a now 30-something woman supporting her mother's cancer journey. Content Warning: We're talking about rape culture, sexual assault, and gender-based violence in this episode, the impacts still felt decades on, and the process of sexual healing as middle aged women. We also get a little explicit with the language so…headphones highly recommended! This is a raw and riveting coming-of-age story about the wild love of teenage friendships and the casual oppression of 90s rape culture, and to be honest it was so searingly accurate I had to wait a minute and gather myself before I invited @emeliasf to come on the show to discuss it. Publisher's Weekly describes it this way: “With plenty of Juicy Fruit, padded bras, and pot smoke, the narrative begins as a nostalgia-tinted reverie before evolving into a devastating portrait of the pre-#MeToo era from someone on the other side of it. The author's candor and courage will move readers regardless of when or where they came of age.”  Buy Skid Dogs at your favourite local bookseller or the alternative. Chelsea Javier, actor, writer, and filmmaker, has always been a creative person and visual artist. But she was also risk averse. She stayed in jobs that were close to what she wanted rather than the real thing - until she did the Hoffman Process in May 2018. In her early to mid-twenties, Chelsea went through what she calls a dark period.* During this time, she moved back to her family home and sought the help she needed. As she began to transition to a new life, in one of those 'sliding door' moments as she calls it, she met her now-husband, Paul. He had, just two days prior, completed the Hoffman Process. Two years later, Chelsea did the Process. There's a beautiful back-and-forth between Chelsea and Drew about the Process itself, and the experience of trusting yourself. As Chelsea shares, through her work at the Process, she discovered that there truly is no limit to how deeply you can feel, heal, and live. She knows how to handle rejection with strength and resiliency and she's not afraid to reach for what she wants. Chelsea is also a past Hoffman Mandala contest winner. The 2024 Mandala Contest is currently open until February, 29th. If you're interested in submitting your art, check out the Mandala Contest theme, rules, and submission guidelines. *Content warning, please use discretion: In this episode, our guest speaks about her history of depression and periods of suicidal ideation. We understand that this sensitive topic may not be right for all listeners. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please reach out to a local mental health hotline or emergency services. They co-run their production company American Lagomorph and released their first feature film, Smile or Hug, (starring Chelsea opposite Danny Trejo, directed by Paul), on Amazon, Apple TV, and Tubi, last year. Chelsea recently appeared on the CW show Walker and dreams of being a series regular on a dramedy TV show like Six Feet Under (her favorite show!). Chelsea completed the Hoffman Process in 2018 and was not working in entertainment (aka following her dreams!) before doing the Process. She previously worked as an art teacher and often writes about art and teaching life in her scripts now. Outside of work, she loves spending time with family and friends at the beach, roller skating, traveling, and conversing about mental health. Follow Chelsea on Instagram.
