Daria Burke is an author, executive, and healer-at-heart. She's also a grandchild grieving for her grandmother and a daughter estranged from her parents. In this episode, Daria shares the profound impact of losing her maternal grandmother at age seven and how that early loss reverberated through her life. This loss and grief exist alongside the immense healing she's done around growing up in poverty, childhood trauma, and her parents' absences, addictions, and the eventual estrangement from them. With the recent release of her memoir, Of My Own Making, Daria opens up about the moment, decades later, that reawakened the grief for her grandmother - finding a newspaper article about her fatal car accident. That discovery, and ensuing grief, started a new chapter in Daria's healing process. In our conversation, we talk about inherited trauma, the emotional weight of estrangement, the invisible grief of childhood neglect, Daria's healing practices, and how she stays connected to her grandmother through what she calls “love taps.” Key Topics: What role Daria's grandmother played in her early childhood The ongoing impacts of childhood grief and unprocessed trauma How truth-telling is part of healing The collective grief she grew up around in Detroit of the 1980's Uncovering the grief she buried after her grandmother died Grieving for family members who are still alive Grief Practices Daria Shares: Giving herself permission to cry freely Meditative practices to connect with her grandmother Volunteering on holidays and creating new rituals Finding signs from her grandmother in the world around her Daria Burke is an American writer, speaker and award-winning business leader. A marketer by trade and a seeker at heart, Daria is a storyteller and sense-maker, weaving together personal experience and the science of healing and transformation to explore new ways of understanding how we choose who we become. This passion led her to complete Dr. Tara Swart's Neuroscience for Business course at MIT and Positive Psychology and Well-Being at Stanford, taught by Dr. Daryn Reicherter, an international expert in trauma psychiatry. Her debut memoir, OF MY OWN MAKING (April 2025) explores trauma, neuroplasticity, and Post-Traumatic Growth through the lens of her own healing journey. Kiese Laymon called it “as profound a book about the treacherous experience of befriending ourselves as I've read this decade.” Part memoir, part methodology, OF MY OWN MAKING blends personal narrative with scientific insight, Daria inspires readers to reimagine the narratives that define their lives. According to the Washington Post and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, current estimates indicate that around one in five children in the United States are considered neurodivergent. This means they have brains that function differently than the "typical" pattern, with conditions such as ADHD, dyslexia, and autism spectrum disorder being common examples of neurodiversity in children. As a neurodivergent life coach, Christian Vinceneux helps parents gain confidence, navigate challenging situations, and raise resilient, resourceful, and independent children. It's important to note that I don't work on “fixing” your child; instead, I provide you with a roadmap to help them succeed. Are you parenting a child with ADHD or autism and feeling like every day is an uphill battle? If you're overwhelmed and exhausted by daily struggles, know that you are not alone. You're doing your best, but you might feel drained by your child's behaviors and worried that your efforts aren't making a difference. Many parents feel lost after following advice from providers that didn't make sense or was ineffective. Often, these recommendations can be unrealistic, ignore parental input, or rely on compliance-based approaches that aren't neuro-affirming. If you're neurodivergent yourself, things can become even more complex. You may know what needs to be done but struggle to implement it, or your child's behaviors might trigger you to feel dysregulated. You may worry about repeating the same hardships in your child's life that you experienced. Before blaming yourself, remember that most strategies fail because they aren't properly taught or suited to your family's needs. It's essential to keep in mind that your child is not giving you a hard time; they are having a hard time. Shifting to this mindset is crucial for discovering effective strategies. That's where I come in. I provide you with clarity and confidence in your parenting while bringing more peace to your family. I don't offer quick fixes; instead, I show you how to better understand your child's behavior and how to respond effectively to support their social-emotional development. My approach focuses on doing things differently rather than doing more, ensuring it supports your child's growth and your family's well-being. My methodology is family-centered, neuro-affirming, relationship-based, and entirely tailored to meet your family's specific goals. Love to hear from you; “Send us a Text Message”Tom Hampson is co-hosting with me today and we are grateful to be with Monica Cline, founder of “It takes a family”.Monica joins us to explain the nefarious nature of the National Sex Ed standards, also called Comprehensive Sex Ed, being pushed across the nation to rob children of their innocence. Monica knows firsthand as a former Comprehensive Sex Educator (CSE) and Title X (family planning) Training Manager who was trained by the LGBTQ community and Planned Parenthood. She shares her story including a conversion to Christianity, which prompted her to deeply question comprehensive the sex education and crisis pregnancy counseling that she was involved in. Today, Monica boldly exposes the secular ideology behind comprehensive sex education and the abortion industry, which aim to destroy our children, families, and culture. Monica encourages parents to RECLAIM PARENTHOOD by accepting their God given role as the primary authority and educators for their children. She teaches parents to follow God's command in Deuteronomy 6:7 to impress God's truth onto their children continually, because IT TAKES A FAMILY to raise strong children, build healthy communities, and form a great nation. Philippa Stobbs OBE worked for 30 years at the centre of developing national SEND policy with the Council for Disabled Children—she's the highly-respected doyenne of SEN. Few people have as encyclopaedic knowledge of special educational needs as she does. She spent decades negotiating with the government of the day to ensure legislation and new policy supported children with disabilities, pushing back against government plans that would do the opposite. In a fascinating and educational conversation, Philippa talks to SNJ's Tania Tirraoro and Sharon Smith about a decade of the Children and Families Act 2014 that she was instrumental in influencing, what came before, and what she thinks the future holds. We will experience remarkable changes during this century. In particular, there will be a great awakening in the following three fields: First, although the modern trend is exceedingly materialistic, humanistic and atheistic, there will be a surge of interest in and awareness of spiritual phenomena. This will enable us to experience remarkable works from the spirit world that will change the course of history. Second, along with these spiritual experiences, humanity will gradually come to realize the divine value and social significance of the family as the basic school of true love. This realization will arise out of the painful experiences of family breakdown and the abnormal transformation of the family throughout the world during recent decades. Third, on the foundation of the development of our spirituality, the hope and corresponding efforts for peace will increase markedly. More than two full years of living in the COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on children and their families. During the most recent omicron surge, pediatric infection rates were particularly concerning for pediatricians across the country. Parents of children younger than 5 years of age are feeling especially concerned, as vaccines have not yet been approved in this age group. But that may change soon, as Pfizer has recently submitted a request to the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use authorization of its COVID-19 vaccine for kids 6 months to 5 years old.Beyond the direct effects of COVID-19 infections on children are the psychosocial and mental health effects of the pandemic. Isolation and socioeconomic stressors on families affect children, too."One in 6 children has sought mental health services in the past two years," says is Dr. James Gaensbauer, a pediatric infectious diseases physician at Mayo Clinic Children's Center. "The American Academy of Pediatrics has declared a mental health emergency during this pandemic."Dr. Gaensbauer points out it is important for parents to keep an open dialogue and be empathetic with kids about their fears and anxieties. Resources are available to help families, including the Mayo Clinic Family Stress Resource Center. On the Mayo Clinic Q&A podcast, Dr. Gaensbauer joins Ask the Mayo Mom host Dr. Angela Mattke to discuss how children and their families have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We want to help you think well about immigration, especially as the surge in unaccompanied children at the U.S. southern border leads to greater public debate of these issues. Jeff Pickering, Chelsea Patterson Sobolik, and Travis Wussow welcome Jonathan Hayes, a former federal official, to the roundtable to explain how our government shelters unaccompanied migrant children. Hayes served as Director of the HHS Office of Refugee Resettlement, the agency responsible for caring for unaccompanied migrant children.“Yet again, the situation at the southern border ought to remind us that unaccompanied migrant children are not a mere problem to be solved. They bear the image of God, and are endowed by him with dignity and worth. Jesus loves them, and so should we. These kinds of problems will persist at our border for as long as our immigration system is allowed to languish in incoherence. A better path forward will require government leaders — both in Congress and the administration — coming together in an honest search for solutions based on long-term strategies. In the meantime, we should do everything we can do, through both Christian ministry and government policy, to help alleviate the suffering of those who are attempting to flee violence in their home countries.” – Russell Moore on March 18, 2021Guest BiographyJonathan Hayes served as the director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) in the Administration for Children & Families at the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services until March 2020 when he transitioned to the office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response until January 2021. Prior to joining HHS, Jonathan served as chief of staff to two members of Congress spanning over eight years. Additionally, he has experience in the private sector working in broadcast television, sales and marketing, business development, international trade and customs and commercial airline operations. Jonathan received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and minor in political science from Florida State University. Born in Greenwood, Mississippi, and raised in Panama City, Florida, he now lives in northern Virginia with his wife Tammy and their five children. He is also an elder at McLean Presbyterian Church.Resources from the ConversationListen to Laura Collins on immigration and border policy solutionsRead ERLC's Explainer: The crisis of unaccompanied minors at the borderRead EIT's letter to President Biden | Evangelical Leaders Urge Compassionate Response to Vulnerable Children at the BorderRead Time Magazine piece | How Foster Families Are Stepping Up to House Unaccompanied Children Arriving at the U.S.-Mexico Border by Jasmine AguileraSubscribe to ERLC's Policy Newsletter

On this episode, I'm sharing my conversation with Chris Orwig. Chris is the playful father of three girls, photographer, author and teacher. He recently taught a class on Creative Live titled - Capturing Authentic Photos of Children & Families. He's the author of many books including The Creative Fight, Visual Poetry and People Pictures. On today's show, Chris shares how a massive hard drive failure showed him how important his family photos were to him. Chris talks about an exercise to help us slow down with our cameras and just use one button. A listener asks if Chris has a good photo of each of his family members and if he doesn't - does he have the same pit in his stomach she has when she thinks about the photo that doesn't yet exist of that person? A few other things we talk about are being present as parents and photographers, insurance and the idea of luck. Chris's Tedx talk: http://chrisorwig.com/tedx/ http://thefamilyphotographer.org
