In early 2025, the FBI announced that they had found more than 2,000 new records related to John F. Kennedy's assassination. What do they include? Why did it take so long to find them? How many will be made public? The world waits to find out. In late 2023, we sat down with journalist, author, and co-founder of the substack JFK Facts Jefferson Morley. We discussed revelations regarding the CIA's knowledge of Lee Harvey Oswald before November 22nd, the lasting legacy of JFK's approach to foreign policy, and how clandestine intelligence agencies continue to withhold information about the 35th president's death. Here's what we're reading, recommending, and revisiting this week.Catherine's library find is Toto, by A.J. Hackwith, which is a look at the Wizard of Oz story from the perspective of Toto the dog. He tells us, "I was mostly a Good Dog until they sold me out to animal control, okay?" which sounds like a take we'd like to hear.Terri's random recommendation this week is a filmed version of a stage production of Waitress, starring Sara Bareilles and streaming on Max. We've talked about the show and the movie before, and Terri found this an enjoyable way to make use of her Max subscription. Mentioned: A song from the show, "She Used to Be Mine," performed by Jeremy Jordan, Jessie Mueller, and the show's creator, Sara Bareilles. In the archives, we checked in on an episode from 2021 on one-star reviews of parenting experiences. Mentioned: "7 Surprisingly Busy Days in the Life of an Experimental Theater Maker" at the New York Times (gift link).Next week's lineup: Lost S2 E11, "The Hunting Party," on Tuesday, March 4A Man on the Inside S1 E6, "Our Man in Sacramento," on Wednesday, March 5Weekly roundup on Thursday, March 6Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.

GUEST 1 OVERVIEW: Jefferson Morley is a Washington author and veteran journalist whose novelistic non-fiction books explore untold chapters in the history of the American nation. A skilled investigative reporter, Morley combines granular detail with storytelling verve to capture unknown realities of subjects as disparate as the Central Intelligence Agency and America's legacy of racial violence. Morley's newest book, Scorpions Dance: The President, The Spymaster and Watergate, excavates the untold backstory of Watergate: How the subterranean relationship of two master Machiavellians–CIA director Richard Helms and President Richard Nixon–culminated in America' greatest political scandal. Morley's 2017 book, The Ghost: The Secret Life of CIA Spymaster James Jesus Angleton, tells the story of a paranoid genius who was perhaps the most powerful unelected official in the U.S. government. At the height of the Cold War, Angleton's secret influence extended from Moscow to London to Jerusalem to the Vatican, to the White House. If there is a “Deep State” in American life as some contend, Angleton was one of its Founding Fathers. Morley's trilogy of spies starts with Our Man in Mexico: Winston Scott and the Hidden History of the CIA. his 2008 biography of an improbable American spy. Winston Scott was an Alabama math teacher turned FBI agent who joined the CIA at its founding, became close friends with Angleton and became the chief of the agency's Mexico City station in the 1960s. “Every decade or so a talented writer provides a genuinely new glimpse of the Central Intelligence Agency,” said historian Thomas Powers of the book. Morley's second book, Snow-Storm in August, was described by best-selling author David Mariniss as “History so fresh it feels alive.” A vivid account of a white riot that swept the nation's capital 25 years before the Civil War, Snow-Storm's “plunge beneath the surface of history exposes realities more true to daily experience than executive proclamations or speeches in Congress,” said the Washington Post. The Minneapolis Star Tribune called it “elegant and readable.” Morley is one of the world's leading authorities on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He is editor of the blog, JFK Facts blog on Substack. GUEST 2 OVERVIEW: Trevor Scott FitzGibbon is president of Silent Partner and an award-winning PR strategist with more than 20 years of experience. His work has primarily focused on defending human rights, whistleblowers, and exposing corruption throughout his career. His clients have ranged from Google Foundation and Amnesty International to WikiLeaks, Julian Assange Legal Defense, Pearl Jam, the governments of Venezuela and Ecuador, and its legal fight against Chevron for its destruction of the Ecuadoran rainforest.

Brendan, what else can we expect this year? Brendan Dowling: [00:01:11] Well, hopefully more of the same, I think from our perspective in Australia, but from countries globally, we've had a gutful of how much impunity there is in the cybercrime world. It's extraordinary how lucrative that industry has become in just a few years. And I think for most cybercriminal operators, they've been operating with a sense of confidence, anonymity, impunity and without seeing costs imposed. So the sanctions are important. I think exposing Ermakov and what he did with the Medibank incident is hugely important and impactful. But the takedown of Lockbit, I mean more disruption. I think that's hugely effective to breaking what otherwise I think will just continue to grow because it's easy money. We need to find ways to actually say we're going to make your lives harder. Dr Miah Hammond-Errey: [00:02:02] Absolutely. As someone that's worked in this space for a long time, it's really exciting to see these big announcements we had planned to record a few weeks ago, but on the day you were involved in a multi nation announcement about a cyber-attack, can you tell me what happened? Brendan Dowling: [00:02:15] So we, with our partners in the Five Eyes, issued an advisory around a group called Vault Typhoon, who is a Chinese backed group operating out of China targeting critical infrastructure. So the importance of that advisory was saying this group is utilising the living off the land technique, which essentially means that you can get onto someone's network and behave like you belong and are much harder to detect. And we're seeing that type of activity on US critical infrastructure. We think there's a risk that it's targeting a bunch of other nations, including Australia. And the key thing with an advisory like that is saying, here's what's going on, here's the information you need. If you're a critical infrastructure operator to hunt, detect, mitigate, putting it out there, naming the source and saying this is a problem because the targeting of critical infrastructure means it's not necessarily for information gathering or espionage purposes. The potential is there for disruption. And that's kind of the nightmare scenario in the cyber world, that a malicious actor can actually disrupt our essential services and stop our economies, societies, communities from functioning. Dr Miah Hammond-Errey: [00:03:25] In late January, the government announced the first ever use of autonomous cyber sanctions, that is, sanctions imposed on an individual because of their activities in cyberspace. Russian citizen Alexander Ermakov was sanctioned for his role in the breach of the Medibank Private network. As you mentioned earlier, we've recently heard that Ermakov has been detained. Do you have any more information for us? Brendan Dowling: [00:03:45] We've consistently called on the Russian government to better enforce laws aga...

Our Man in Tokyo: An American Ambassador and the Countdown to Pearl Harbor (Mariner Books, 2022) is a riveting, behind-the-scenes account of the personalities and contending forces in Tokyo during the volatile decade that led to World War II, as seen through the eyes of the American ambassador who attempted to stop the slide to war. In 1932, Japan was in crisis. Naval officers had assassinated the prime minister and conspiracies flourished. The military had a stranglehold on the government. War with Russia loomed, and propaganda campaigns swept the country, urging schoolchildren to give money to procure planes and tanks. Into this maelstrom stepped Joseph C. Grew, America's most experienced and talented diplomat. When Grew was appointed ambassador to Japan, not only was the country in turmoil, its relationship with America was rapidly deteriorating. For the next decade, Grew attempted to warn American leaders about the risks of Japan's raging nationalism and rising militarism, while also trying to stabilize Tokyo's increasingly erratic and volatile foreign policy. From domestic terrorism by Japanese extremists to the global rise of Hitler and the fateful attack on Pearl Harbor, the events that unfolded during Grew's tenure proved to be pivotal for Japan, and for the world. His dispatches from the darkening heart of the Japanese empire would prove prescient—for his time, and for our own. In the years leading up to the Second World War, the U.S. was represented in Japan by Ambassador Joseph Grew: born from a patrician family, Harvard-educated, ran away to the foreign service, and deeply respected by his fellow diplomats and Japanese politicians alike. From his arrival in Tokyo in 1932 to when he was eventually repatriated back to the US in 1942, after Pearl Harbor, Grew dutifully reported to and advised the U.S. on what to do with an increasingly imperialist, militarist—and, at many times—dysfunctional Japan. And if officials had listened to Grew, as Steve Kemper tells it in his book Our Man In Tokyo: An American Ambassador and the Countdown to Pearl Harbor (Marine Books, 2022), the history of US-Japan relations may have looked very different. In this interview, Steve and I talk about Joseph Grew, his time in Japan, and how U.S. obstinance, and Japanese imperialism, militarism and dysfunction, got in the way of his diplomacy. Steve Kemper is a journalist and the author of A Labyrinth of Kingdoms: 10,000 Miles through Islamic Africa (W. W. Grew, the United States ambassador from 1932 to 1942. In 2019 the National Endowment for the Humanities gave me a grant through its Public Scholar Program to support the research and writing. My previous book, A Splendid Savage: the Restless Life of Frederick Russell Burnham (W. W. Norton, 2016), is the biography of a man once world-famous as "the American scout." Before that, I wrote A Labyrinth of Kingdoms: 10,000 Miles Through Islamic Africa (W. W. Norton, 2012), about Heinrich Barth, one of Africa's greatest explorers yet nearly forgotten today. The book is a nonfiction historical adventure that recreates Barth's incredible five-year, 10,000 mile journey in the 1850s. The Boston Globe named Labyrinth one of the best nonfiction books of 2012.My first book, Code Name Ginger: the Story Behind Segway and Dean Kamen's Quest to Invent a New World (Harvard Business School Press, 2003), was selected by Barnes & Noble for its Discover Great New Writers award. In 1932 career diplomat Joseph Grew was posted to Japan as the American Ambassador. At the time, Japan was in crisis. Naval officers had assassinated the prime minister, and conspiracies flourished. The military had a stranglehold on the government. War with Russia loomed. Not only was the country in turmoil, but its relationship with America was also rapidly deteriorating. For the next decade, Grew attempted to warn American leaders about the risks of Japan's raging nationalism and rising militarism while also trying to stabilize Tokyo's increasingly erratic and volatile foreign policy.  From domestic terrorism by Japanese extremists to the global rise of Hitler and the fateful attack on Pearl Harbor, the events that unfolded during Grew's tenure proved to be pivotal for Japan and for the world in the run-up to WWII. To discuss Joesph Grew and Japanese American relations running up to the war, I'm joined by Steve Kemper. Steve is the author of Our Man in Tokyo, which draws on Grew's diary, correspondence, dispatches, and first-hand Japanese accounts to lay out Japan's road to the Second World War.
