Dr. Haimoff received his Ph.D. in Biology from Cambridge University's Pembroke College in the U.K., where he studied in the famed footsteps of scientists like Stephen Hawking, Charles Darwin and Isaac Newton. Dr. Haimoff pioneered the development of several specific computer software programs used for biological scientific analyses of a wide variety of animals and human behavior, back in the days when mainframe computers used punch-cards.He was also the very first scientist in history to use the fledgling videotape format as a tool for analyzing animal behavior both in a laboratory setting and in the wild. Back then, in the mid-1970s, “portable” or “field” video recorders were custom-made, limited edition prototypes so weighty they required two crew-members to carry around, and videotapes were hand-spooled onto reel-to-reel decks. For five years after receiving his doctorate in the mid- to late-1980s, Dr. Haimoff served as a research professor in Biology at UCLA, where he continued his studies into animal behavior and ecology, traveling to mainland communist China in places no Westerner had visited since the 1850s, and helped the Chinese government set up game reserves and protected areas to save wildlife on the verge of extinction. Dr. Haimoff published over 40 articles in scientific journals and books from 1980-1990 on his diverse research into animal behavior, ecology, and evolution, establishing him as a world-renowned authority on animal as well as plant biology. After meeting with an executive at the PBS-TV station in Los Angeles (KCET), who had recently produced a science documentary series and acquired a million-dollar grant from the L.K. Whittier Foundation to continue producing science TV programs, Dr. Haimoff was persuaded to pursue a career in science TV production in the late-1980s. For two years after joining the staff of the Los Angeles-area PBS-TV station, Dr. Haimoff wrote and produced numerous segments and documentaries on scientific subjects ranging from the fringes of the cosmos to the sub-atomic components of matter - programs which spanned the entire spectrum of science.Website globalscience.biz/aboutBooks Apollo 12: Uncensored and Unfiltered Space Pioneers: Conversations With the Men of Apollo Women Space PioneersHelp Support the Show Visit: patreon.com / californiahauntsradio Visit our store for some cool merch at https://boocrew.printful.me/

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is a physician, epidemiologist, educator, author, speaker, and podcast host. We first met back in 2017 while I was competing in a pitch competition for a start-up I had at the time, Abdul was the keynote speaker. He told an incredible story about his time as Detroit's Health Director, where he often worked directly with kids who faced uncertain futures because of the health risks present in the communities. From that moment on, I've been a huge fan of Abdul's work and his overall outlook on life. Better yet, only a few days prior to that speech he announced his historic candidacy for the Governor of Michigan, which would have seen him become America's first Muslim governor. While he didn't win this race, he earned tremendous support from progressives all over the country led by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and touched the lives of thousands of people across Michigan and beyond with his vision for a better future and his unique brand of progressivism. Abdul and I have stayed in touch over the years and I'm always inspired by his ability to capture and articulate the moment, and help chart a collective path forward. In this episode, we talk about the role that travel plays in developing and defining one's identity. He shares his experiences traveling between the United States and Egypt as a child and how these trips continue to shape his life today. We also talk about his time living in the United Kingdom as a graduate student, and what lessons from abroad he's been able to bring home to Michigan. We touch on his 2018 run for the Governor of Michigan, his reflections and current thoughts on the Covid-19 pandemic, and what the future of travel looks like as we begin to engage in exploration again. We end the conversation in a similar manner to when I first met Abdul, with him speaking about the future of the progressive movement and where he views his role going forward. Follow along with Abdul's work: His newsletter, "The Incision," cuts to the heart of the trends shaping our moment. He is a commentator at CNN. His two books include "Healing Politics," calling for a politics of empathy to cure our epidemic of insecurity, and "Medicare for All: A Citizen's Guide" with Dr. Micah Johnson. He is the host of “America Dissected,” a podcast by Crooked Media, which goes beyond the headlines to explore what really matters for our health. He is a Senior Fellow at the FXB Center for Health & Human Rights at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, and a Scholar-in-Residence at Wayne State University and American University, teaching at the intersection of public health, public policy, and politics. He is formerly the Health Director for the City of Detroit and candidate for governor of Michigan in 2018. Follow Abdul on Instagram and Twitter. Lifestyle/advertising photographer, and all around nice guy, Jake Stangel joins the podcast to talk about growing up as a creative kid in the suburbs of Maryland and the early influence photography had on his life.  It was an 8th grade general art class that Jake discovered a passion for photography that would set him down a path to enrolling at NYU's Tish school and continuing his education in fine art and photography.  But after growing up in a small town, Jake was overwhelmed by the energy and life that New York City offered and soon realized he was interested in more than just taking pictures.  He switched his studies to focus more on economics and marketing, but after a while found that he needed to find a balance in his life that could also include photography and creativity.  Before long he was working as an assistant and taking the hard earned path that so many before him have traveled, moving up the ranks in the competitive world of photography.  After graduation, he decided he had had enough of New York and needed to re-ground himself closer to nature and moved to Portland where he would begin building the photography career he has become known for today.  During our conversation we get the opportunity to discuss the ever challenging pursuit of finding the right work/life balance, the dangers of comparing yourself to other photographer's images and work ethic, and the importance of establishing and nurturing relationships throughout your career and treating others as you would want to be treated.   To Learn More About Jake Stangel Visit: https://jakestangel.com To Learn More about Visual Revolutionary and To Donate to the Show Visit: http://www.visualrevolutionary.com

Abbott and Costello William (Bud) Abbott and Lou Costello (born Louis Francis Cristillo) were an American comedy duo whose work in radio, film and television made them one of the most popular teams in the history of comedy. Thanks to the endurance of their most popular and influential routine, "Who's on First?" â whose rapid-fire word play and comprehension confusion set the preponderant framework for most of their best-known routines â the team is, as a result, featured in the Baseball Hall of Fame. (Contrary to popular belief, however, the duo was not inducted into the Hall). Bud Abbott was born in Asbury Park, NJ, October 2, 1895 and died April 24, 1974 in Woodland Hills, California. Lou Costello was born in Paterson, NJ, March 6, 1906 and died March 3, 1959 in East Los Angeles, California.
