In her 1936 book, The Secret of Childhood, Maria Montessori writes that “We must wake up to the great reality that children have a psychic life whose delicate manifestations escape notice and whose pattern of activity can be unconsciously disrupted by adults.” The approach to education that Montessori established sought to remove such unnecessary disruptions while cultivating a fruitful environment wherein children could discover the world, grow toward the maturation of their God-given capacities, and experience the wonder and responsibility of real freedom. Montessori schools have since been established all across the United States and indeed across the world, including here in my own hometown of South Bend, Indiana. The conversation on our episode today will focus on one such school, St. Joseph Montessori, which is in fact a Catholic Montessori school for children ages 2.5 to 6. My guest is Dr. Elizabeth Capdevielle, who is a board member of St. Joseph Montessori, and who, as a trained Montessori educator, will help us learn more about the Montessori approach, the anthropological underpinnings of this education, and the correspondence of Montessori education to a Catholic vision of the world and the human person. In addition to serving on the board at St. Joseph Montessori, Beth is an assistant teaching professor at the University of Notre Dame, where she teaches in the University Writing Program. We live in a world full of anxiety. In today's message, Pastor Blake reveals how to move from anxiety to peace by finding calm in God.
In “Joy,” Pastor Dave Gustavsen teaches that true joy is found in God's presence. He uses David's story to show the importance of understanding God's holiness and mercy. Access to God's presence requires sacrifice, and that was paid in full by Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. Instead of taking God too lightly or ourselves too seriously, we should let God transform our hearts so we can experience true joy and celebration. Most of us listening today live in a well-resourced country and have access to skilled obstetrical/perinatal care. Although we do not have a perfect healthcare system here in the U.S., it is hard to imagine the realities of birth in the places in Africa we are going to talk about today. When complications arise in the U.S. and other western countries, there are medications, supplies, and trained providers to respond in most cases. But in Africa, there may not be any skilled birth attendants or the equipment they need to save lives during a birth if things go awry. Many women receive little or no prenatal care. In fact, the lifetime risk of a woman dying from complications of childbirth in Africa can be as high as 1 in 38, compared to 1 in 7,500 in the U.S. Complications that may be handled without too much difficulty in a well-resourced country may lead to tragedy there. In this episode, we will hear firsthand about the challenging situations and needs that medical providers have in various places in Africa as we speak with Dr. George Mulcaire Jones, founder of Maternal Life International. He decided that something needed to be done to improve outcomes and save as many lives as possible, while respecting each area's unique culture. Through his eye-opening stories of mothers' experiences, we will explore practical solutions to improve outcomes and how we can all help, even though we may be worlds away. Dr. George Mulcaire-Jones is the founder and director of Maternal Life International. He worked in Cameroon for two years with Mission Doctors Association and continues to work in various countries in Africa. He is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine and completed a family medicine program at the University of Minnesota and an obstetrical fellowship at Sacred Heart and Deaconess Hospital in Spokane, Washington. He practiced family medicine and obstetrics for 29 years in Butte, Montana. In addition to his work with Maternal Life International, he is the project director for the Southwest Montana Community Opioid/Substance Use Coalition and has been a consultant for the Montana Perinatal Quality Collaborative. He and his wife Mary have 6 children and 10 grandchildren. Listen and learn: Why Maternal Life International was born How a stable family partnership impacts birth outcomes How maternal death impacts more than just the lost mom and baby Why having ultrasounds available increases the likelihood of getting other prenatal care How in bringing medical provider training to locations in Africa, the teacher also becomes the learner What the three “delays” are that impact outcomes What causes stunting in children in Africa Join us in supporting Dr. George's life-saving work in Africa! InJoy is honored to support the work of Maternal Life International (MLI). Their Safe Passages program is run by a very small team and can really use your help. Your donations will allow the program to purchase practical items to care for pregnant women in resource-scarce areas. Learn more and donate. Resources: Maternal Life International – Safe Passages

Episode 42: Recorded February 7, 2024 "[Tommy] felt strongly that the lure coursing world had given him a mission, and he felt strongly that he needed to give back..." Trina Bianchi, on her late husband, Tommy, and the "joy" which put into Injoy Lure Coursing products Show Notes The Injoy Lure Coursing story is one that started in the 1970s. Tom "Tommy" Bianchi and his wife, Trina, were living in Vermont and attended a dog show in Quebec in 1977 when they discovered sighthounds -- in the form of Salukis -- and sighthound sport of lure coursing. Tom was on the fence about acquiring a Saluki and getting into the sport, but Trina gave him a friendly nudge, and off they went. At a lure coursing meeting in 1978, their Saluki was injured during the meeting. Tom was an accountant at the time, but his passion was woodworking, and he was always on the lookout for a way to turn his hobby into a full-time career. When he observed the less-than-safe equipment at the meeting, he realized that he could, in Trina's words, "build a better mousetrap." He believed he could design and building safer, high quality lure coursing equipment for the sport. Together, he and Trina would build and grow Injoy Lure Coursing equipment as the premiere brand for the community. The company would take a hit in the 2000s when Tom developed cancer and later succumbed to the disease. Trina would continue to carry the torch, but in 2023, she realized that she needed someone to pick up the Injoy torch and carry it for the lure coursing community. Enter Eddie and Selma Kominek -- Afghan Hound and lure coursing enthusiasts since 2004, they expressed interest in purchasing Injoy and continuing to build the high quality product that started with Tom and Trina. In this episode, host John Parker sits down the past and present owners of Injoy Lure Coursing equipment -- Trina, Eddie and Selma. They talk about Tom Bianchi's commitment to excellence in all things -- doing things with "joy in his heart" -- and how this shaped Injoy Lure Coursing. John also learns how this philosophy was important in the recent purchase of Injoy by the Komineks and what it means for the future of the company and for the sport of lure coursing. We conclude our series “In Joy” with some closing words from the most joyful letter in the Bible. Paul's letter to the Philippians ends less with a spirit of exuberance, and more with a sense of contentment. Perhaps, contentment is the soil in which joy blossoms. Project: I'm Speaking, featuring HELEN AVAKIANAn Award-winning songstress and International Fingerstyle Champion Helen Avakian has moved audiences for decades with her haunting voice and versatile guitar playing.Speaking with Helen and hearing her incredible stories—was so enriching that we spent a lot of time just sort of talking and meandering through her life–which by the way is punctuated with these FANTASTIC Full Spiral moments!Lauded a number one “Favorite Acoustic Act” four times by Rhythm and News magazine and winner of eight first prizes from the NewSongs Contest, she has performed on PBS radio and television, on stage with Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul, and Mary), and as an opener for luminaries ranging from Stanley Jordan, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Imuh-gen Heep to the New York Philharmonic. I left our time together SO inspired and reminded of the importance of supportive mentors and taking chances in this life! (Like when Helen met and jammed with founder and lead guitarist of Fanny, June Millington!)My wish for you is for you to listen to Helen with the same childlike wonder with which Helen sees the world and seems to approach her whole life. My special guest, Sheri Thompson, the HOPE coach, joined me in a conversation to talk about how inner healing and emotional healing play a part in overcoming some struggles of living healthy. She shares her personal testimony of coming to the Lord, walking through her own healing, and how that is still playing a part in her own health journey. She bridges the gap in our understanding of how revisiting some past hurts and traumas can truly help us live our healthiest selves, make our healthiest decisions and do all of it for the glory of God! I recorded this with Sheri a few weeks back and even as I was relistening to it just before recording this intro I am blown away by all the goodness and truth shared in this conversation. We talked about things like: what full surrender of something in your health can actually look like and how it can impact your life and relationship with God how your past T.R.U.T.H is often what is making your current decisions. And how what you choose not to heal and surrender to God will always circle back around either in you or in the generations following you. Sheri challenged us with the reality that most of us don't do the work that is required to actually heal from our past and stop letting it dictate how we live in the present and left us with the encouragement to actually take the time, do the work, let God heal us so we can live as the healthiest version of ourselves the way He created us to live. I know you will be blessed by this conversation and I pray the Lord uses it for His glory as you continue forward living healthy and empowered! (If you want to listen to more on this topic, check out #37: "Want to set goals for long term results in your health? A biblical vision for a healthy lifestyle") In Joy, Lauren More about Sheri: Sheri Thompson is founder and CEO of The Healing Station which is a businesstry (business+ministry) that helps women and men to recognize how their voice has been muted and impacted by their T.R.U.T.H moments (trauma.rape.unloved.tragedy.hurt). She has created a SAFE environment to help them heal from their past without judgment and provides the setting to catapult them to their purpose. In addition to being an entrepreneur, Sheri is a licensed life coach, dynamic speaker, and minister. She is a GirlMom and GlamMom who currently resides with her family in Maryland. This highly original story reflects on how the carceral state shapes daily life for young Black people--and how Black Americans resist, find joy, and cultivate new visions for the future. Joy and Pain: A Story of Black Life and Liberation in Five Albums (University of California Press, 2022) is about a young man, Marley, and a particular place, the Southern California Library--an archive of radical and progressive movements and a community organization where the author meets Marley. Taking music as its thematic undercurrent, the book is structured as a "record collection." Each of the five "albums" relates Marley's personal encounters with everyday aspects of the carceral state through an ethnographic A side and then offers deeper context through an anthropological and archival B side. In telling Marley's story, Damien M. Sojoyner depicts the overwhelming nature of Black precarity in the twenty-first century through the lenses of housing, education, health care, social services, and juvenile detention facilities. But Black life is not defined by precarity; it must embrace social visions of radical freedom that allow the cultivation of a life of joy beyond systems of oppression. In Joy and Pain, we see how Marley's experience intersects with history and the contemporary political moment--Black knowledge production, Black liberation movements, community-based organizing--to imagine expansive futures. Damien Sojoyner is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Irvine. He is the author of First Strike: Educational Enclosures in Black Los Angeles. Reighan Gillam is Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Southern California. She is the author of Visualizing Black Lives: Ownership and Control in Afro-Brazilian Media (University of Illinois Press). Learn more about your ad choices. In this hour of The Herd, Joy Taylor (in for Colin) wonders what the Las Vegas Raiders are doing in benching quarterback Derek Carr for the regular season's final two games. In Joy's perspective, Derek Carr isn't the reason why the Raiders are a hugely dysfunctional franchise. Later, MJ Acosta-Ruiz of the NFL Network drops in to share her opinion on Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa's brain health concerns, Derek Carr's unceremonious exit from Las Vegas and the wonder of San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy's ascent.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
