Have you ever felt completely unqualified for what God has asked you to do? Enoch felt the same way. He was "but a lad" and "slow of speech," yet he became the man who led an entire city to be translated. Discover how your weaknesses can become your greatest strengths. Summary: In this episode, we explore the rich doctrines found in Genesis 5 and Moses 6. We look at the legacy of Adam and the rise of Enoch, uncovering the patterns of faith that define the patriarchal priesthood. The Book of Remembrance: We discuss why the early Saints kept a record in their own language and how writing down our spiritual experiences preserves them for our children. Parenting in the Gospel: Adam and Eve taught their children "in the way of understanding," providing a model for teaching by the Spirit and through the "power of God". The Call of Enoch: We analyze Enoch's deep insecurity when called to preach—his youth and his speech impediment—and God's promise to "open thy mouth" and "fill it". The Power of a Seer: Enoch was commanded to "wash thine eyes with clay," a symbol of purifying his vision to see things not visible to the natural eye. The First Principles: Enoch teaches the fundamental "plan of salvation" through baptism, the Spirit, and the Atonement, showing that the gospel has been the same from the very beginning. Call-to-Action: What "speech impediment" or insecurity is holding you back from doing what God has asked of you? How can Enoch's story help you move forward today? In this episode of the Expositors Collective podcast, Mike Neglia is joined by Shane Deane for a wide-ranging conversation on Puritan preaching, with particular attention to William Perkins' The Art of Prophesying and the Puritan emphasis on application.Rather than treating the Puritans as mere historical figures or quotable voices, this discussion explores how their preaching method remains deeply relevant for modern pastors. Shane helps unpack why clarity, structure, and especially wise application were central to Puritan preaching, and how these convictions can shape Christ-centred exposition today. The conversation also turns to the often-neglected practice of pastoral prayer in gathered worship, drawing on Puritan theology and practice to show why public prayer is not filler, but a vital act of shepherding the congregation before God.Topics CoveredShane's first sermon and how his preaching has developed over timeWhat first drew Shane to the Puritans and their preaching methodThe danger of treating the Puritans as “quote machines”William Perkins' The Art of Prophesying, with a focus on Chapter 6The fourfold Puritan preaching pattern:Reading the textExplaining its meaningDrawing out doctrineApplying truth to the hearersWhy Perkins warned against cluttering sermons with excessive citationsWhy application was the heartbeat of Puritan preaching“Discriminating application” and addressing different kinds of hearers in one sermonPerkins' categories of hearers and how they challenge one-size-fits-all preachingThe Directory for Public Worship and its heavy emphasis on applicationThe six Puritan “uses” of application:InformationRefutationExhortationAdmonitionComfortTrial (self-examination)Why pastoral prayer belongs at the heart of gathered worshipHow public prayer functions as shepherding, not transition timeThe connection between preaching, prayer, and spiritual formationWhich Puritan habits could most immediately strengthen modern preachingHow studying the Puritans has shaped Shane's own preachingA closing “quote machine” segment featuring memorable Puritan linesKey TakeawaysPuritan preaching was deeply pastoral, not merely academicApplication is not an appendix to exposition, but its goalStructure serves clarity and freedom rather than rigidityToo many quotations can obscure rather than illuminate ScripturePastoral prayer is a theological act that teaches, shepherds, and forms a congregationPreaching and prayer together shape the spiritual life of the churchAbout the GuestShane Deane earned his PhD in Expository Preaching from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Pastor Jesse Skinner teaches on praying in tongues and prophesying.
All upbuilding and spiritually mature Christian thought and action inevitably have their foundation in Scripture. The Bible gives us clear truth. Just as importantly, it gives us clear direction as to how to apply those clear truths to our lives in practical ways. In 1 Thessalonians, the Apostle Paul teaches us to NOT despise "prophetic utterances." Why would we make light of any teachings given for our benefit? As we shall see, Paul's teaching here is showing us to be open and accepting towards what our brotherhood is proclaiming to us, but not without caution. Next, he warns us to examine everything! Is this a contradiction? Are we supposed to embrace what we hear, or are we supposed to be skeptical? The key to answering this question lies in understanding how Christians can discern which teachings and prophesyings are trustworthy, especially in a world filled with conflicting spiritual claims. Biblical truth must be rooted in Scripture, not personal feelings, traditions or charismatic personalities. It is vital to not accept teachings simply because they sound good or align with popular opinion. Instead, the Apostle Paul urged us to test all spiritual claims against the Bible's consistent message, historical context and prophetic accuracy. In this journey, it's important to highlight humility, study and spiritual maturity in evaluating doctrine. We also need to address the danger of false prophets and misinterpreted signs, remembering that genuine prophesying aligns with God's character and long-term plan of redemption. A few key takeaways • Scripture is the ultimate authority: All teachings and prophesying must be measured against the Bible's consistent message. • Emotions and tradition can mislead: Just because something feels right or is widely accepted doesn't mean it's biblically sound. • False prophets and teachers are real and can be persuasive: The Bible warns repeatedly about deception, especially in the End Times. • Prophesying must align with God's character: True informative and enlightening teaching reflects God's justice, mercy and long-term purpose. • Spiritual maturity is essential: Discernment grows through study, prayer and humility—not through quick conclusions or viral teachings. Our bottom line is the importance of examining the Scriptures carefully as a testing ground for what we hear. God's word is sufficient and trustworthy, even when cultural voices or influencers claim new revelations. Ultimately, the path to truth is paved with careful study, accountability and a deep reverence for God's Word.

In this final episode to the Summer Q&A Series, Nicole responds to a heartfelt question from a listener: “I feel the Holy Spirit urging me to speak, but I’ve been taught that women should not preach. How do I stay obedient to the Spirit?” Nicole unpacks Scripture—including the often-debated passages in 1 Corinthians—to explore how spiritual gifts are given to both men and women for the building up of the church. She highlights the difference between preaching and prophesying, and reminds listeners that obedience to God’s voice is never limited by human rules. Nicole also shares what’s coming this fall: a brand-new series on the book of Daniel, exploring how to live “right-side up” in an upside-down world. Don’t miss the preview at the end of the episode! Key Takeaways
In this time of turmoil and uncertainty, Jesus is present with us, freeing us from the fear that would drive us to police the borders of belonging in our community. He is empowering us to join in the prophetic work of liberation, telling the truth about ourselves, our community, and our world.Jesus says to John and to us, “Don't be afraid, the goodness that you have has been a gift of my mercy. Not an achievement you have grasped. You don't enjoy the life you have because you got it first… You enjoy it because I'm a gracious giver of life who wants EVERYONE, including you, to flourish! So stay open to more goodness instead of trying to secure the borders of that goodness.”And Jesus is saying here that if you cause them to stumble: Refers to actions that cause people to lose their faith, actions that make it very difficult for ppl to continue to follow Jesus... trust in the goodness of Jesus… He's saying that's a really serious thing. This brings to mind 2 things. 1): The many abuse scandals that have come to light in so many different corners of the church over the last several years. These are the kinds of actions that can shipwreck someone's faith. It often makes people unable to go to church, unable to engage with scripture, unable to follow Jesus. 2) The general posture of Christian leaders as they use their energy to police the boarders of who's in and who's out: Infighting rather than liberation. Hungry for status rather than feeding the hungry. Building brands rather than binding up the brokenhearted. Jealousy of others' successes rather than rejoicing in the lost and least. Suspicion over anyone who doesn't share the right label rather than blessing any work that results in human flourishing regardless of who's doing that work. Defending their tribe rather than coming to the aid of the defenseless. And because of this friends, is it any wonder that we have an entire generation of younger folks walking away from the faith? Is it any wonder that they question whether the Jesus the church claims to follow is a God of love and mercy? The work of prophecy, in contrast to policing, is to stand in solidarity with those who are harmed by these kinds of abusive actions, and to tell the truth about the rotten fruit of these actions. And of course, the tragic irony is that in so many of the churches that enable and excuse their own behavior, there's almost always a strong policing energy - condemning those who are outside the borders, straining out gnats and swallowing camels. Trust that the work of liberation will draw us all deeper into communion with God and with each other. It's so much easier to police the behavior of outsiders than it is to prophetically look at our own lives and our own community… And to do what's necessary to cultivate this fruit of liberation here in this garden. Today, beloved, the good news is that in this time of turmoil & uncertainty, Jesus is present with us freeing us from the fear that would drive us to police the borders of belonging in our community & empowering us to join in the prophetic work of liberation, telling the truth about ourselves, our community, & our world. Where do you feel the fear that might drive you to police the borders of belonging? And where do you sense Jesus empowering you to join in the prophetic work of liberation?

Sermon: The Gift of the Holy Spirit Series: Living in the Spirit Introduction: The Greatest Gift * The Christmas story is about God's love demonstrated through the gift of Jesus Christ. * Just as the angels proclaimed the arrival of peace and goodwill to shepherds, God's ultimate plan was not only to save but also to dwell within us through the Holy Spirit. * Christmas is a time of giving, and through the Holy Spirit, God gives us gifts that transform, empower, and guide us. I. The Holy Spirit: A Promise Fulfilled * Luke 2:11: “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” * Jesus' birth fulfilled the promise of redemption, paving the way for the gift of the Spirit. * The miracle birth of Jesus through the Holy Spirit made the rebirth of mankind possible through the Holy Spirit. * John 14:16-17: Jesus promised His disciples a Helper who would live with and in them, ensuring they were never alone. * Just as the shepherds rejoiced at the news of Christ's birth, we rejoice in the Spirit's presence. II. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit comes bearing gifts that enable us to live out the message of Christmas every day. Emanuel, God is with us! He is with us because He is in us when we serve others; we become His hands and feet as the body of Christ to manifest His presence all around us. 1. The Gift of Adoption * Romans 8:15: “You have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!'” * Through the Holy Spirit, we are made children of God, part of His family, and heirs of His promises. * This adoption reflects the inclusiveness of the shepherds' message—available to all who believe. 2. The Gift of Comfort and Peace * John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.” * Just as the angels proclaimed peace on earth, the Spirit gives us an internal peace that surpasses all understanding, especially in trials. 3. The Gift of Guidance * John 16:13: “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” * The wise men followed a star; today, we follow the Spirit, who illuminates God's will and guides us in our decisions. 4. The Gift of Power * Acts 1:8: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you.” * Through the Spirit, we are empowered to live boldly for Him, spreading His message of salvation. 5. The Gift of Transformation * Galatians 5:22-23: The fruit of the Spirit transforms us from within, reflecting Christ in our character. * This inner transformation mirrors the miraculous nature of Christmas—a world forever changed by the Savior's arrival. III. The Spiritual Gifts in Scripture In addition to these foundational gifts, the Holy Spirit equips us with unique gifts for ministry and service. 1. The Gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:8-10) * Wisdom, Knowledge, Faith, Healing, Miracles, Prophecy, Discernment, Tongues, and Interpretation of Tongues. * These gifts demonstrate the Spirit's power in supernatural ways, enabling us to minister effectively to others. 2. The Gifts for Building the Church (Ephesians 4:7-13) * Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers. * These leadership gifts equip the body of Christ for works of service and maturity in faith. 3. The Sevenfold Spirit (Isaiah 11:2-3) * The Spirit of the Lord, Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Might, Knowledge, and Fear of the Lord. * These attributes empower us to live godly lives and make decisions that align with God's will. 4. The Motivational Gifts (Romans 12:3-8) * Prophesying, Serving, Teaching, Encouraging, Giving, Leading, and Showing Mercy. * These gifts reflect the diversity of God's design for His church, allowing every believer to contribute uniquely. IV. Living in the Spirit: A Life of Overflowing Gifts * As we receive these gifts, we are called to share them with others: 1. The Gift of Adoption leads us to welcome others into God's family. 2. The Gift of Comfort equips us to comfort those in pain. 3. The Gift of Guidance helps us lead others to the truth. 4. The Gift of Power emboldens us to share the gospel. 5. The Spiritual Gifts enable us to build the church and fulfill our unique callings. The Charge: Receiving and Sharing the Gift * The angels' proclamation of Christ's birth reminds us that the most incredible gifts bring glory to God and benefit others. * This Christmas, let us celebrate the Holy Spirit—the continuation of God's gift of Emmanuel, “God with us.” * As we embark on the Living in the Spirit Series, may we embrace His gifts and live a life that reflects His presence. -- Praise Tabernacle Dr. Joshua Kennedy, Pastor 2235 Ocean Heights Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234 pastorjosh@praisetabernacle.com praisetabernacle.church (609) 927-4560(w)
