She also spoke to Andriy who is currently living with his family on a ship that's docked on the River Clyde. He told her all about the meals and traditions they share across the festive season. Welcome to December 6, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate good old St. Nick and shortwave miracles.  Saint Nicholas was born around 280 AD in modern day Turkey. His parents died when Nicholas was very young, leaving him with a large inheritance. Out of tragedy was born his generous spirit. Nicholas grew up to be a bishop and was known for his generosity and kindness, especially toward children and the poor. Even after he passed away, his legend grew. Children who left their shoes out by the fire would awake to find money or candy inside and this inspired the tradition of leaving out stockings for Santa. On St. Nicholas Day, celebrate the man who inspired the spirit of giving and discover how fun it still is to give gifts “just because.” In 1945, Percy Spencer, a self taught engineer from Howland, Maine was working on an active radar set when he noticed something strange. A chocolate bar in his pocket had started to melt. The idea for dielectric cooking with a shortwave transmitter had already been demonstrated by Westinghouse at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. Spencer picked a winner, however, when he tried his hand at cooking something irresistible with this method, popcorn. Raytheon filed a United States patent for Spencer's microwave cooking process and by 1947 the first commercially available microwave oven was built. On National Microwave Oven Day, we still love celebrating with something delicious like popcorn.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. KRAMPUS & YULEIn central European folklore, Krampus is a Christmas devil who visits on the eve of St Nicholas Day, to punish naughty children. He's also known to drag an unfortunate few back to hell with him in a basket carried upon his back. Some children are merely whipped with birch tree branches known as switches whilst others serve as supper to St Nicholas' rather unconventional companion. The name Krampus may have evolved from the German word Krampen which means claw and this half goat, half human, demon monster is thought to have been part of the Pagan rituals performed around the Winter Solstice, with legend saying that Krampus is the son of Hel, the Norse god of the underworld. Yule is one of the oldest winter celebrations and with Norseman being hunters, who spent much of their time outdoors, they worshipped the Sun and saw it as a wheel that changed the seasons. The word for this wheel was Houl and it is from this word that Yule is thought to have derived from. At midwinter, the Norsemen would sacrifice cattle, gather around bonfires, drink sweet ale and tell stories as the long nights would again, begin to shorten.Resources:IntroductionYuleStory 1 Story 2Minehead HobbyhorseThe Devil's FootprintsThanks so much for listening and we'll catch up with you again next week for some more true, scary stories.Sarah and Tobie xxJoin us on InstagramJoin us on TwitterJoin us on FacebookVisit our Website Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. All Saints Day is approaching. This is the day that the church honors the lives of those folks who have died. Some saints have their own special day: St. Patrick who shared the Christian faith in Ireland has March 17. Saint Valentine's Day, February 14 actually does honor a real person or possibly a couple of people both named Valentine for his or their Christian work. St Nicholas Day is not Christmas but Tuesday, December 6. All Saints Day is for us to honor all of the believers who have died. I am remembering an important saint in my life: Rev. Dr. Kirk Mariner, who was the senior pastor of Mount Olivet in the 1980s and 1990s. I was a seminary intern for two years at Mount Olivet and worked with Kirk there. In 1997, he was appointed to be the pastor of Williamsburg United Methodist Church and I was appointed with him as the associate pastor of the church. We worked together for five years at Williamsburg.

I wanted to surprise you all with a bonus episode this holiday season. I know we are still working through all our road trip episodes, but it's the holidays so I figured an extra episode wouldn't hurt anyone. Also did you know that even the holidays can't escape being associated with cryptids? Well there is a day that many know as St Nicholas Day, it usually falls on December 6th and it's a day where Saint Nicholas would go around and reward good children with treats. But what about the children who were naughty? Do they get any gifts? Well it's believed that Saint Nicholas had a companion known as Krampus and he is the one who would deal with all the naughty children. You may have heard of Krampus from movies, books and maybe local legends, but now it's time to hear about him from Campfire Adventures. Take a minute and listen to this short, but sweet bonus holiday episode. Happy Holidays from Campfire Adventures!

His parents died when Nicholas was very young, leaving him with a large inheritance, but out of tragedy his generous spirit was born. Nicholas used the money to help those less fortunate than himself. There are many symbols of the Christmas season, and the joy of children is definitely one of them. That joy is often connected with receiving gifts.  Here in Croatia, the first important gift-bringer is usually St Nicholas. He visits the homes somewhere in the night before his feast day, and that's December the 6th. He leaves gifts for good children and ceremonially opens up the joyful Christmas season. We could call St Nicholas Day an overture to Christmas. Small gifts, children's anticipation, seasonal magic, even a saint, so the religious side of Christmas doesn't slide through. On St Nicholas Eve, children will clean their boots and put them in their windows. In the morning, they will find a present inside!Oh, wait! There is something else in those boots! Golden twigs? What's with that? The answer will unlock the secret of that concerned look in the children's eyes. St Nicholas never travels alone...Support the show (https://buymeacoffee.com/cro_underrated)

2 Corinthians 9:7 NLT You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.” Not a week since our version of Thanksgiving and we arrive at our next big celebration, St Nicholas’ Day. A third-century bishop in modern-day Turkey, Nicholas was both a miracle-worker and giver of secret gifts (Matthew 6:3). He was a defender of the Faith in a time of persecution, secretly delivered bags of money to provide dowries for a father’s daughters who would otherwise have been forced into prostitution, and raised three boys from the dead! Over time this saint of God has been both domesticated and commercialised to suit our materialistic age. At the Oratory, before the Christmas season kicks in, we prepare another feast and tell the story of St Nicholas. We concentrate on his generosity, and together talk about what venture we will financially support this year. This is to ensure we do invest in the needs and opportunities of others as well as our planned investment in pleasing ourselves with gifts, food and festivities. It doesn’t matter what target we set, but we do set one, since we can estimate what we shall spend on Christmas. Each member of the family contributes to it. It is a reminder of the generosity of God in sending Jesus to be born in a stable in Bethlehem. It acknowledges that we too can invest financially in the well-being of others, secretly and generously. Over that meal, we recall where and how we have invested in needs beyond our own over the year. We recall where we feel we have been tempted to avoid giving financially, often from fear of running out of money. Sums don’t matter and we can involve anyone of any age. Giving is from the heart. One addition to this practice is collaborating on creating something we can hang from the Christmas tree that reflects the people or cause we choose to support, so that the recipients are represented and welcomed into our home through the Christmas season. QUESTION: How can you practise generosity to others this Advent? PRAYER: Lord, may your Church reflect your generous nature this Christmas season.
