Rabbit Hole: The new masterpiece from the Sunday Times number one bestseller. The last interview of season 6 lands on Mark Billingham. We were luckily enough to be in his presence at The Harrogate Crime Writers Festival. Unfortunately, for me, I was blissfully aware that I was stood 2 foot away from him near the bar and was too busy chatting! Well now I have my chance. I will have the time to dig into Marks writing career and his inspirations. You can join us LIVE on YouTube and you too can ask questions! Mark Billingham is one of the UK's most acclaimed and popular crime writers. A former actor, television writer and stand-up comedian, his series of novels featuring D.I. Tom Thorne has twice won him the Crime Novel Of The Year Award as well as the Sherlock Award for Best British Detective and been nominated for seven CWA Daggers. His standalone thriller IN THE DARK was chosen as one of the twelve best books of the year by the Times and his debut novel, SLEEPYHEAD was chosen by the Sunday Times as one of the 100 books that had shaped the decade. Each of his novels has been a Sunday Times Top Ten bestseller. A television series based on the Thorne novels was screened in Autumn 2010, starring David Morrissey as Tom Thorne and a BBC series based on the standalone thrillers IN THE DARK and TIME OF DEATH was shown in 2017. Mark is also a member of Fun Lovin' Crime Writers. Performing alongside Val McDermid, Chris Brookmyre, Stuart Neville, Doug Johnstone and Luca Veste, this band of frustrated rockers murders songs for fun at literary festivals worldwide. Stuart Neville's novels have come a long way from his native Armagh to bookshelves across the globe, but his stories remain very much rooted in home. His stellar career began with a manuscript at a John Connolly book reading in Dublin, handed to the established author by the aspiring crime writer, who had a publishing deal, but no readership as yet. That would soon change. “One of the finest thriller debuts of the last ten years,” Connolly wrote on the flyleaf of Neville's finished product after it was published in 2009. ‘The Ghosts of Belfast' was the original title. Perfect for an American audience. It became ‘The Twelve' for the home crowd – something that doesn't sit well with Stuart – but more on that anon. The plaudits continued, with the book winning the Los Angeles Times, Mystery/Thriller category Book Prize, and a host of other awards. It was named top crime novel of the year in the New York Times and the LA Times and received glowing reviews in numerous other publications, from the Boston Globe and The Irish Times, The Guardian – to name but a few. “The best first novel I've read in years. It grabs you by the throat,” wrote James Ellroy on the back cover. Nine successful novels followed, with Stuart's unique post-troubles take on Northern Ireland as the backdrop for most of his stories. Gerry Fegan, Jack Lennon, DCI Serena Flanagan became household names. The landscape he paints is unapologetically true to the character and personality of the land. The inhabitants – from the seedy, the downtrodden, the opportunists, the evil and the innocents - get on with life as best they can. Ghosts roam the pages. Stuart's novels are often bleak. Desperation, domestic violence and gruesome murders are the subject matter of his gritty crime noir tales. The ghosts both metaphorical, real or imagined are always there, but at the core of his stories are people trying to survive in whatever world they inhabit. ‘The Traveller and other stories', containing 12, often harrowing, short stories and a novella revisiting characters from the past, is a perfect example of this. His latest novel ‘The House of Ashes' is already receiving five-star ratings, with one reviewer saying it may well be his masterpiece. Stuart isn't just a writer. He has dabbled in film and he's also a guitarist in a band that originally began as a laugh at a crime writer's festival in New Orleans called, ‘Fun Lovin' Crime Writers'. Their tagline -‘Murdering songs for fun.' For this week's podcast, Stuart tells Armagh I about his writing style and roots. He talks about his books, his influences, why he feels the arts are neglected in Northern Ireland and how his band ended up playing at Glastonbury in 2019.

New Northern Ireland crime fiction (part 2) with authors Simon Maltman & James Murphy, & bookseller & publisher David Torrans: They discuss with We’d Like A Word presenters Paul Waters and Stevyn Colgan, financial support for authors, whether publisher (& reader) appetite for Northern Ireland crime fiction has dried up (Paul hopes not!), and keeping a bookshop and publisher going during Covid. Simon Maltman's latest novel is Witness. He's also the author of The Mark, Sidewinder, Bongo Fury & more. He plays guitar, he's from Bangor and leads crime fiction tours of Belfast. James Murphy, from Belfast, is a former headteacher and author of the Terror trilogy - The Rise of Terror, The Terror Within & Dark Light (yes, we tease James for that third title). James also teaches crime writing, is an organiser of the Northern Ireland Festival of Writing, and presents the podcast, A Life of Crime (Writing) with James Murphy. The legendary David Torrans owns the legendary No Alibi's crime and mystery bookshop on Belfast's Botanic Avenue. He also runs the No Alibis Press publisher, (Emma Warnock is the editor). He's been a magnet and hub for local and international authors, and is one of the organisers of Noireland, the Northern Ireland International Crime Fiction Festival. And David and his shop have been immortalised in fiction (Mystery Man by Colin Bateman) - an uncannily accurate depiction of the real man. (David denies it.
