Writer Patton Oswalt and artist Scott Hepburn join host Aaron Sagers to talk the major comic Minor Threats. In a world of superheroes, sometimes the minor league villains can become queens. And the benchwarmer heroes can become legends. Created by Patton Oswalt, Jordan Blum and artist Scott Hepburn, and published by Dark Horse Comics, Minor Threats made an impact in the superhero comic world last year, and now the second volume, "The Fastest Way Down," launches April 3. Also, the trade paperback of The Alternates, about B-list superheroes from the pages of Minor Threats who get a taste of greatness, drops April 17. Patton Oswalt and Scott Hepburn discuss their expanding comic universe, as well as the next upcoming spinoff Barfly and where else they might take these characters. And for good measure, we ask Patton about ghosts and his role in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. MORE ABOUT MINOR THREATS Minor Threats is graphic crime drama about superheroes and villains and the last gasp of the colorful innocent days of the silver and bronze age before they're dragged into the grit-soaked modern era. Now, Minor Threats is back for Volume 2, subtitled “The Fastest Way Down” In the first issue, dropping April 3, Frankie Follis AKA the costumed criminal Playtime has won. Twilight City's greatest hero The Insomniac and its greatest villain The Stickman are dead, allowing Frankie to unify the super crook underworld and assert herself as the Queenpin of the Redport neighborhood. But Frankie is feeling the pressure from every side. Rival gangs are challenging her authority, her partner Scalpel is pushing her to legitimize her empire, and the act of murdering The Insomniac has broken something deep inside her. Frankie is about to learn the hard way . . . heavy is the head that wears the supervillain crown. But wait, there's more from the world of Minor Threats: Spinning out of the world of Minor Threats is The Alternates, a tale of costumed underdogs--featuring a support group for superheroes, who are struggling to reclaim their mediocre lives in this world after tasting their true potential in another dimension called The Ledge. That's written by Oswalt, Blum and Tim Seeley with art by Tess Fowler, Christopher Mitten and covers by Hepburn. AND Dark Horse Comics is buzzing with some exciting news: the world of Minor Threats continues expanding with a new spinoff series, Barfly! Comic book legend Kyle Starks (Where Monsters Lie) joins Patton Oswalt and Jordan Blum on writing duties on a feel-good, coming-of-age series about an insect monster-man searching for his identity in the criminal underworld of Twilight City. Ryan Browne, co-creator of the critically-acclaimed series Eight Billion Genies, will provide artwork for Barfly, with letters handled by Nate Piekos (Minor Threats). The first issue will also feature a main cover art by Minor Threats co-creator Scott Hepburn, with three variant covers featuring art by Browne, Martín Morazzo, Dan Hipp (1:10 ratio), and one more to be revealed at a later date. The series is set to begin this July. _______________________________________________________________ If you like Talking Strange, please subscribe, leave a nice review, and share with your friends. An episode that we've been planning since we recorded our first conversation devoted to Martin Scorsese in Season 2, this week, I was so honored to welcome back my favorite crime writer working today to dissect one of her most significant sources of inspiration, the fascinating & controversial writer-director Paul Schrader.Novelist Megan Abbott is the Edgar-winning author of such acclaimed, rich works as GIVE ME YOUR HAND, YOU WILL KNOW ME, THE TURNOUT, DARE ME, QUEENPIN, and more. Her newest book, BEWARE THE WOMAN, is set to release on May 30 from Penguin Random House and is already available for pre-order.Much like when we discussed Martin Scorsese and opted to tackle some of her underrated or under-discussed favorites from his filmography, we did the same here. For this episode, Megan selected five Schrader films that are often overlooked, including HARDCORE, PATTY HEARST, THE COMFORT OF STRANGERS, LIGHT SLEEPER, and AUTO FOCUS. Sprinkled into this deeply analytical & appreciative conversation, I've included first-person accounts from filmmaker Paul Schrader that I encountered in the book SCHRADER ON SCHRADER during my research. Except, as I was unable to find them voiced by Schrader himself, doing the honors today, we have past guest and veteran film critic Sean Burns graciously bringing the man, the myth, the Michigan accent to life for your listening pleasure. The result is an episode that I know film buffs will cherish. It's two sharp women on Schrader, seediness, Scottsdale, & sex. What more could you want?!Originally Posted on Patreon (3/4/23) here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/79557830Logo: KateGabrielle.comTheme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive

A female secondary school mentor sent a teenage pupil 3,000 messages in just two months and told 'I think I'm falling for you' and 'I want you so badly', a court heard. In a series of 'overtly sexual' texts Ellen Cadman-Smith told the 15-year-old that he 'drove her insane' and that she was 'thinking about him non-stop'.In extracts from messages read to a jury, the school worker, of Sandown, Isle of Wight, admitted she was 'half naked', saying 'I can't have you and you know why,' before arranging to meet him in her car........... Cadman-Smith was a mentor at the Cowes Enterprise College responsible for supporting pupils' 'behaviour, mental health and learning difficulties'. A drugs Queenpin running a county lines operation on her own has been convicted after she boasted about her lavish lifestyle including £500 haircuts in Knightsbridge which were funded by selling crack cocaine and heroin on Snapchat. Henna Ashraf, 25, flaunted her wealth by taking pictures inside her flash Mercedes car while also posting photos of bundles of cash on social media. A predatory rapist Googled how to get away with assaulting a woman on the same night he carried his victim to a car park in Portsmouth before sexually assaulting her.Daniel Booth, 20, of Beresford Road, Portsmouth, began his seven year jail sentence on Saturday, which was handed down nearly 17 months after the attack. The jury heard how a young woman, aged in her 20s, had become separated from her friends shortly after 11pm following a night out in Portsmouth in June last year. She woke up in a car park after passing out with no idea what had happened to her, a court heard. A woman in North Wales was left shocked after spotting the world's deadliest plant, which contains a substance 6,000 times more poisonous than cyanide, in a council flowerbed. The flower, called Ricinnus Communis and known as the Castor Oil plant, was named by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's most poisonous. Do you want to know why the Just Stop Oil fanatics manage to cause so much chaos? It is because of New Labour's Left-wing Supreme Court, which has made the police and the law so feeble when faced with green zealots blocking motorways and roads. This grandiose tribunal, whose very existence has given liberal judges more power, should really be called the Blair Court. It has existed only since 2009.

There's nothing she can't overcome. From beating her autoimmune disease, escaping death and surviving prison, Kimberly will later discover she was chosen. This is her story of how she transitioned from Queen Pin to High Priestess.
Before El Mencho or El Chapo, even before Pablo Escobar, there was Ignacia Jasso, otherwise known as “La Nacha.” She was the Queen Pin of Juárez who ran the border heroin trade for 50 years from 1930 to 1980. Declared public enemy number one by the Americans, she still managed to escape the law by pretending to be an evangelical Christian and with the help of some extremely crafty lawyering. Danny is joined by Benjamin Smith, author of The Dope: The Real History of the Mexican Drug Trade to talk La Nacha. This week, I was so honored to welcome back my favorite crime writer working today. Novelist Megan Abbott is the Edgar-winning author of such acclaimed, rich works as "Give Me Your Hand," "You Will Know Me," "The Fever," "Dare Me," "Queenpin," and more. Her latest novel - "The Turnout" - was a "Today Show" Read with Jenna book selection as well as a "New York Times Bestseller" and most recently the winner of "The LA Times" Book Prize for Mystery/Suspense.An impressive film buff who is as delightful as she is intelligent, I had so much fun celebrating Judy Holliday and Martin Scorsese with her last year and am so glad she returned to get the band back together to discuss five of her favorite underrated movies from one of her most beloved filmmakers - Mr. Billy Wilder. In this fast or one could even say "Wilder-paced" episode, you'll hear us explain why the films "The Major and The Minor," "A Foreign Affair," "One, Two, Three," "Love in the Afternoon," and "Kiss Me, Stupid" deserve just as much love as some of the most famous classics from the director of "Some Like it Hot," "Double Indemnity," and "The Apartment."Originally Posted on Patreon on 5/3/22 here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/65951851Logo: Kate Gabrielle (KateGabrielle.com)Theme Music: Solo Acoustic Guitar by Jason Shaw, Free Music Archive
