Have you ever seen the meme that goes: "Nursing exams be like: 'Which one is the most orange?'" and goes on to provide four images of the same orange fruit? Having been a nursing student myself years ago who bore the burden of these tests that were often oblique and required specific tackling strategies, I understand the pressure and mental stress of the whole examination process. How should one, a nursing student alike or not, approach the test room? Are there helpful mindset preparations to ensure successful results? What are the strategies for effective studying, especially for online instruction? How far can mere memorization skills take you? And how should one know when to abandon an unfruitful learning style and method for a new one? We are joined by two incredible nursing educators to answer it all!Stephanee Beggs from Los Angeles, California, is the CEO of RNExplained, Inc., an educational content platform that went viral on social media and is utilized by over 1 million nursing students and current nurses nationwide. She was honored on Forbes 30 Under 30 for Education, having generated more than $2 million in revenue selling study materials and merchandise in 2023. Stephanee has received two Bachelor's degrees in Business Administration in Marketing and Nursing as Magna Cum Laude and currently works as a registered nurse at the UCLA Health Emergency Department and as an Adjunct Professor of Nursing Pharmacology at Mount Saint Mary's University.Meris Shuwarger from Columbus, Ohio, is a certified Emergency and Trauma registered nurse and a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Emergency Nursing. She received her Bachelor's degree in Nursing as Valedictorian and currently works at a Level II Trauma Center and Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center. Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Groups Podcast: College Group Tutoring and Study Review Groups
S04-E26 We feature an interview with Kristen who is the program manager for the peer study group program at Housatonic Community College in Connecticut. She shares about the rapid growth of the SI program and the challenges faced by implementing it at a two-year institution. Kristen finishes the interview by sharing what she has learned personally and professionally from her experiences in the program and with the SI leaders. In addition to this audio episode, I also provide several PDF documents: first, is an overview of Housatonic Community College and second is an infographic about the peer study group program. Supplemental Instruction programs are less common at two-year institutions than at four-year ones in the U.S. HCC was the first community college in the state of Connecticut to implement SI. It was piloted in the Developmental Studies department and then rapidly expanded throughout the campus due to its early success. In the Community College environment, where it is more difficult to cultivate relationships, this program facilitates this need and creates a support network by encouraging relationships in and out of the classroom. Housatonic Community College's Supplemental Instruction Program develops academic support communities of higher-level thinkers and self-empowered learners. This self-selecting, course-specific, peer-led program seeks to promote active, collaborative learning involving critical thinking and transferable study skills that leads to a feeling of empowerment to complete their goals toward their Associate Degree and beyond. On the 33rd episode of EdUp EdTech, I got to chat with Nicolò Bates, the founder, and CEO of TEDU. During this episode, we discuss how TEDU was created to be a one-stop place for students to find all of the academic resources available to them. They want to ensure that no student is without access to the help they need. They've recently partnered with the International Center for Supplemental Instruction to continue to prioritize students with their learning support system. More About Nicolò Nicolò used to dream about working on Wall Street and took a job in finance out of college but found he always wanted to solve a problem that he saw on his campus at the University of Miami. He saw that a lot of academic resources were not available to students during the evening when a lot of students were studying. He saw this as an opportunity and a few years later, created TEDU. S01-E08 We feature a previously published article named “Use of Supplemental Instruction at the UMKC School of Law.” The focus for this publication was the use of SI in the School of Law. There is a high dropout rate in law school just like with the first year of college. The same strategies that are used by SI leaders in an introductory history course can be applied to the challenging courses during the first year of a law program. S04-E13 This episode introduces us to Sam who is a student study group leader. She is studying physics and astronomy. Her career aspiration is to become a physics professor and researcher. Her hobbies include running, basketball, poetry, and jamming to music. I was very interested in how she broke down the various challenges of the physics course that she supports. It is clear that her experience as a MavPASS leader will be very helpful with her future career as a professor. I wish I had this experience before I started my teaching career. This episode completes a six-part series featuring the MavPASS program at Minnesota State University at Mankato. MavPASS is their institutional name for Supplemental Instruction. S04-E11 This episode introduces us to Taylor who is a student study group leader. She is studying family and consumer science with an emphasis on dietetics. Taylor mentioned that the anatomy course she supported was challenging due to the complicated vocabulary. That course was actually the first one supported by SI back at the University of Missouri-Kansas City for the exact same reason. In her concluding comments, Taylor talks about how she is a more confident person in so many areas of her life partially as a result of involvement with MavPASS. This is part four of a six-part series featuring the MavPASS program at Minnesota State University at Mankato. MavPASS is their institutional name for Supplemental Instruction. S01-E05 We feature an update of the early 1990s foundational theories for the SI model. New theories have emerged and built upon the older ones. One of the enduring components of this publication is the comparison of the two models for treating people: the medical model and the public health model. Dr. Robert Blanc, one of the key people involved with developing SI in the early days, should be credited with that metaphor. Once again, some of my family of synthetic voices will provide the narration of the publication. Felicia will be the primary narrator with Donald asking questions. Leslie and Matthew will read the direct quotations by the educators. I hope you have an informative and pleasant listening experience. In addition to this audio episode, I also provide a transcript of this narration. Let's listen to Felicia as she begins the narration of the foundational theories for the Supplemental Instruction model. S04-E10 This episode introduces us to Osee who is also a MavPASS student leader. He is an immigrant from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is a wonderful story of how he was identified by his teachers in middle school to help other students with their homework. His work as a MavPASS leader is a natural continuation of that role. The conversation ends with Osee’s challenge of growing by getting outside his comfort zone and how the MavPASS program helped him to accomplish that. We continue with part three of a six-part series featuring the MavPASS program at Minnesota State University at Mankato. MavPASS is their institutional name for Supplemental Instruction. Let’s listen in on our conversation. (Bonus PDF) This is a transcript of the narrated history of the Supplemental Instruction program. It also includes references from the original article along with several diagrams.
S01-E04 We feature my history of Supplemental Instruction that was published several decades ago. I updated the history with more accurate numbers regarding the institutions and countries operating the SI program. I also briefly talk about the national SI or PASS centers located around the world. I conclude the history with some personal comments of what it was like to work directly with Dr. Deanna Martin for over a decade at the SI office at UMKC. I also share some thoughts about the current leaders of the International Center for SI and what the future may hold for SI. It was certainly a privilege to be a witness to the development and expansion of SI into a world-wide program. The primary synthetic voices for this episode are Olivia and Henry. When there are direct quotations to read, Ronald and Carole use their voices. Please share your comments about the episode and the use of the voices. I am learning more how to employ the synthetic family to make this a more pleasant listening experience. Especially since this episode is 45 minutes long. In addition to this audio episode, I also provide a transcript of this episode along with references included in the original version of this history. Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Groups Podcast: College Group Tutoring and Study Review Groups
S04-E08 Beginning with this podcast episode, we start airing interviews with study group program coordinators and student study group leaders from over twenty colleges in Australia, Canada, and the United States. These episodes will likely occur from April through September of 2021. Then, a new series will be recorded during October through November and aired late in 2021 and early 2022. The pattern will be to group together the program coordinator and the student leaders from the same institution and release them as a series. Two episodes will air each week. I will record some podcast episodes in between institutional series with research updates from me concerning my research on peer learning. In part one of a six-part series, we feature an interview with Dr. Laura Jacobi, a faculty member and Program Director for MavPASS, their institutional name for Supplemental Instruction, at Minnesota State University in Mankato. Dr. Jacobi’s previously published research concerning online learning uniquely prepared her to transition the SI program to online in spring 2020. In addition to this audio episode, I also provide several PDF documents: first, a one-page overview of their program, second, a photograph of some of the student study group leaders, and finally a profile of the institution. (Bonus PDF) This is the transcript to the podcast on the administrative placement of SI. This was a big question back in the 1980s and 1990s when I worked at the National Center for Supplemental Instruction at the Univ. of Missouri-KC. I included that question in my dissertation on SI with a national study of all known SI programs.

S04-E07 I feature a previous publication by me, Administrative Placement of Supplemental Instruction Programs. This was one part of my dissertation focused on several aspects of Supplemental Instruction that was published in 2000. Olivia and Henry, members of my synthetic voice family will narrate the publication. If I were writing this dissertation today, no doubt there would be changes. But, I think the publication is still useful. I have created a new podcast that just features my previous publications. It is named the Equity Podcast: Equal Outcomes for all Students. It is available at www.equitypodcast.org You can also find links to all my podcasts, Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, and YouTube channels at www.davidmedia.org I am providing a couple of samples of what will appear on that podcast on this one. With the Equity Podcast, I provide a short introduction and then have my synthetic voices do the narration. This episode uses multiple voices to add variety and hopefully a little fun while listening with one voice asking questions and the other answering by reading from the publication. To make it easier to listen to, the narration will not include all the references with dates within the publication nor provide a reference list at the end. You can find the original document by doing a Google search. In addition to this audio episode, I also provide a PDF transcript of the original publication. S01-E02 In this podcast episode, featured is Understanding the Supplemental Instruction Model. This is my most heavily cited publication of anything that I have written. I was working at the University of Missouri-Kansas City at the time with responsibilities for dissemination of the SI model through training workshops, research, and publications. Variations of this article were first published back in the 1980s. While there are things that I would update in I was writing the article today, it still provides a foundation for the SI model. Let's listen to Olivia as she reads the article, Understanding the Supplemental Instruction Model.

The English 110 Supplemental Instruction program offers a variety of resources that support the teaching and learning of academic writing in all English 110 courses at The College of Charleston. We provide podcasts and tutorials that explore different facets of the academic writing process and offer practical writing advice. Trained graduate assistants in the program can visit individual 110 classes to present in-class workshops covering such topics as organization, revision, integrating sources, and paragraph development. We also offer monthly writing workshops that are open to all students enrolled in English 110.
