https://smallchangesbigshifts.com/things-i-wish-i-wouldve-known-the-hidden-impact-of-breathing-and-sleep-with-dr-nancy-addy-season-12-ep-516/What if the way you breathe, sleep, and hold tension in your body could be the key to unlocking better health and vitality? In this conversation, we sit down with Dr. Nancy Addy to explore the powerful connection between oral health, airway function, and overall well-being. She shares eye-opening insights on how small adjustments—like improving breathing patterns and posture—can lead to transformative changes in energy, sleep quality, and daily performance. This is a reminder that taking control of our health doesn't have to be overwhelming—sometimes, the smallest shifts create the biggest impact. Key Takeaways: Learning to breathe properly through your nose instead of your mouth can boost energy, improve focus, and even enhance sleep quality. The way you hold your head and jaw can impact your breathing, muscle tension, and even your mood. Small adjustments can make a big difference. Poor breathing habits during sleep can lead to fatigue and brain fog. Becoming aware of airway health can transform the way you rest and recharge. Chronic jaw clenching or tightness often signals deeper stress or imbalances. Recognizing and addressing these signs can unlock relief and vitality. Snoring in kids is not normal—it can be a sign of airway issues affecting their sleep, growth, and brain development. Identifying and addressing this early can lead to lifelong health benefits. Resources Mentioned: https://aadsm.org About Dr. Nancy Addy: Dr. Addy is a graduate of UMKC School of Dentistry where she became an Assistant Professor of Clinical Dentistry. In 1997, Dr. Addy delivered her first sleep appliance. This proved so successful that she started to treat more and more patients and soon realized what a valuable option Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) was for patients who suffered with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea(OSA). In 1998, Dr. Addy joined the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine in 2006. Dr. Addy has served as president of both the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine and American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. She regularly presents lectures on oral appliance therapy both locally and nationally. Dr. Addy's practice is located in Leawood, Kansas and has been limited to Dental Sleep Medicine since 2006. Dr. Addy is devoted to the education and well-being of her patients who suffer with OSA and snoring. She is saving lives and marriages every day. This week we're chatting with Butch Rigby, a Kansas City developer — or restorer, might be a better term — entrepreneur, lawyer and founder of Thank You, Walt Disney.Rigby has developed real estate in and around the Kansas City area for more than 30 years, starting when he was a full time student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, and a Juris Doctor from the UMKC School of Law.Right after school, he headed to Hollywood to work in movies. A few years later, Butch returned to Kansas City with some great stories. He founded the Screenland Movie Theatre Circuit, and as a part of that venture, he restored the Historic Granada Movie Theatre Building in downtown Kansas City, Kansas. He then renovated the historic Armour Theatre Building in North Kansas City, Mo. He placed the two buildings on the National Historic Register. In the 1990s he formed Thank You Walt Disney Inc., and as Chairman of that organization, he and a group of volunteers purchased Walt Disney's first cartoon studio, the Laugh-O-Gram building near 31st and Troost and took the building off of the city's condemned building list, restored its structural integrity and have prepared it for re-use as an interactive historic site.Butch will talk about those things and much more, including taking a swing at some "Pregame Batting Practice." When did everything change? Was it COVID? Was it the Super Bowl after VoD 2020? Or was it all after Kobe tragically died in a helicopter crash? The guys have returning guest (and Zach's neighbor) Dr. Meylinda Meredith of the UMKC School of Dentistry to talk about relatively recent changes in dental education. What's different after COVID? Is it better? Is it worse? Boards without patients Boards cost $3500 now Written boards are pass/fail, also only one round of written boards A lot of classes are now pass/fail What was life like for graduates in 2020 and 2021? Way less clinical experience and way less reps Lots of online only classes A lot less faculty available Price of education continues to rise, way less funding from the states (average UMKC student debt is around $350,000) "A payment for their whole career" If you want to interact with us, head over to the Very Clinical Facebook Group! Part two of our program on The Sheppard Murder case which spawned the American “Trial of The Century” before OJ. A physician is suspected of murdering his wife in a quiet, affluent 1950s Midwestern bedroom community. Did Sam Sheppard kill Marilyn Sheppard? That is the topic of this week's edition of Unpleasant Dreams. --- Cassandra Harold is your host. EM Hilker is our principal writer and researcher with additional writing by Cassandra Harold. Jim Harold is our Executive Producer. Unpleasant Dreams is a production of Jim Harold Media. A copy of EM Hilker's original article can be found HERE -PODCAST TRANSCRIPT- Perhaps the most thorough and well-balanced of the Sheppard trials was the one held long, long after Marilyn Reese Sheppard's death. In the first installment of this saga, we discussed the first trial of her husband and accused killer, Sam, some of the questionable decisions made by the trial judge, and the media circus that surrounded it; we also explored briefly his retrial in the 1960s where the evidence intended to prove Sam's motive was kept from the jury and where the science of the time, much of which has been debunked over the roughly 40 years since the retrial, favoured Sam's innocence. This was the opportunity, in many ways, to finally reach the truth; a sequestered jury untainted by a riotous media, the benefits of the 50 years of advancement in both biological and behavioral sciences , and all the evidence on the table, At last, the chance to accurately assess whether or not Sam H. Sheppard murdered his wife. FOR THE REST OF THE TRANSCRIPT CLICK HERE – FURTHER READING AND SOURCES – Affleck, John. “Bailey Testifies in Sheppard Case.” AP NEWS, Associated Press, 16 Feb. 2000. In Chicago in 1924, Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb abducted and murdered 14-year-old Bobby Franks. The murder ignited a national backlash against what they saw as a morally bankrupt Jazz Age, and a furor over the two wealthy, psychopathic murderers who killed an innocent child just for the thrill of it. S01-E08 We feature a previously published article named “Use of Supplemental Instruction at the UMKC School of Law.” The focus for this publication was the use of SI in the School of Law. There is a high dropout rate in law school just like with the first year of college. The same strategies that are used by SI leaders in an introductory history course can be applied to the challenging courses during the first year of a law program. In addition to this audio episode, I also provide a transcript of the publication. I hope you enjoy this audio version of the article. Crown Council Mentor of the Month | Helping Dental Teams Build a Culture of Success
Dr. Guy Gross says the best part of every day is when he gets to help patients restore their smiles and their health by replacing and rebuilding teeth. “I spend most of my time placing dental implants and doing cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry, and I love what I do!” he says. “I get to work directly with patients and my team members to solve problems in an environment where I can be responsible for the way patients are cared for and served.” Dr. Gross founded the New Horizons group of dental practices with his wife, Kathryn Gross (Kate), also a dentist. “We have a consistently amazing group of people to work with and a great culture of service, teamwork, and excellence.” Dr. Gross grew up in Bennington, KS, and currently resides in Salina. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Kansas State, then attended UMKC School of Dentistry for his Doctorate degree. He says the dental profession has been an ideal fit for his interests and talent. "Dentistry is a wonderful hands-on health profession where I can diagnose, solve problems, and deliver solutions for my patients. It’s an amazing feeling when patients see their new smile for the first time, or experience the ability to eat their favorite foods again as the outcome of a wonderfully restored bite from dental implants." Dr. Guy was inducted into Dental Hall of Fame in 2018. He has been teaching Dental Implant surgery courses to other dentists since 2014, in addition to teaching courses on 3D Imaging, Communication Skills, Practice Management, and more.

I was born at a very young age in Anderson, MO before the time of preschool, kindergarten, and sandboxes. Spending the first nine years of my life on a small farm, I invested my 5 years before school playing in the dirt, swinging on a tree swing, and throwing rocks at almost any target, moving or fixed, that I noticed. My family moved to the north central Missouri town of Marshall when I was nine. I started my formal education when I was 5 and graduated from UMKC School of Dentistry 19 years later. I went back to Marshall, flat broke, but with no educational debt and have been practicing general dentistry there for the last 38+ years.
The Midwest Innocence Project (MIP) is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to the investigation, litigation and exoneration of wrongfully convicted men and women in our five-state region. Recent independent studies conservatively estimate that between 2% and 5% of all inmates in America were falsely convicted, with some estimates reaching up to 7%. This means that somewhere between 2,000 and 7,000 moms, dads, sons and daughters in Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Arkansas are locked behind bars this very moment for crimes they did not commit. After a conviction, it takes roughly seven to ten years for an innocent person to be exonerated, and the process is very expensive. The MIP staff, along with our Board of Directors, Advisory Board, and volunteers, works diligently to give freedom back to those whom the legal system has failed. Thanks to our partnerships with law schools in the University of Missouri in Kansas City and Columbia and the University of Kansas, we also have a presence in the classroom to teach the next generation of lawyers and investigators how to identify and prevent these injustices. The Midwest Innocence Project was founded a decade ago through the UMKC School of Law and is part of the National Innocence Network. We are based in Kansas City, Missouri. Please also look us up on the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation Non-Profit Site. Jarrett Adams and Brian Banks, chat with Slacker.
