Olive for Education launches Learning Wallet, in a move to support students during Senior Cycle Reform

Olive for Education, Ireland's leading EdTech provider for post-primary schools, has announced the launch of its Learning Wallet, in a move to support students, schools and parents during the upcoming Senior Cycle Reform. Olive for Education looks to empower students and educators by making digital learning straightforward, safe, and accessible - exemplified by this latest product launch. The Learning Wallet is Olive for Education's all-in-one digital learning solution, designed to make personalised, curriculum-aligned technology accessible to every post-primary student in Ireland. Available on a subscription basis, the Learning Wallet offers a complete education bundle that includes a high-quality student laptop, built-in security measures, technical support for parents and teachers alike, and bespoke digital learning tools tailored to the Irish secondary school curriculum. CEO of Olive for Education, Ian Gaughran, said on the announcement: "Every student in Ireland deserves access to the tools that will help them thrive in a digital world - that's what the Learning Wallet is all about. As we move into a new era of education with the Senior Cycle Reform and the Digital Strategy for Schools to 2027, it's vital that no student is left behind simply because of cost or access. With the Learning Wallet, we have built a complete solution with equity in mind." This offering is specifically designed for students taking the junior and leaving certificate across Ireland seeking to transition to a 1:1 student device model - where the student has access to their own personal device for use both in the classroom and at home. With the introduction of the new Senior Cycle assessment model in September 2025 - where at least 40% of student grades will come from continuous assessment such as typed-up project work and practicals, the need for digital fluency in schools has never been more urgent. Students need access to digital tools to produce, manage, and submit this work, but that access cannot be limited to those who can afford high-cost devices, nor should it rely on teachers working overtime to bridge the gap. "In the current economic climate, the cost of a secure, education-ready device - typically between €600 and €700 - can be challenging for a lot of families.. With limited government funding currently available, the burden often falls on parents or school fundraising, creating serious barriers to access. We recognised this growing challenge, and wanted to provide a solution that supports all of the most important stakeholders - students, teachers and parents. "Through the Learning Wallet subscription, students gain access to high-quality devices and exclusive educational content, while teachers and parents benefit from ongoing support and control. As Ireland prepares for the most significant education reform in a century, Olive for Education is leading the charge to ensure every student is ready for what comes next," Gaughran added. With a mission to make digital learning equitable and future-focused, Olive for Education partners with schools nationwide to provide a seamless, curriculum-aligned digital experience. Today, led by a team of EdTech and education experts with over 40 years' combined experience, Olive for Education supports nearly 50 schools and over 10,000 students across Ireland, helping to modernise classrooms and bridge the gap between outdated infrastructure and the demands of 21st-century learning. A coalition of educators and allies has come together to push back against a variety of different kinds of attacks on higher education and students at colleges and universities, particularly in the United States. This group is driven by the belief that a democracy is only as strong as its commitments to academic freedom, intellectual integrity, human diversity, and individual dignity. The impetus among this particular group of academics and staff members is to make sure that students at all the campuses, in all the programs at those campuses across the United States are supported and free to engage in their chosen courses of study. The various ways in which this mission is being attacked or undermined, with the slashing of grants, attempts to control curriculum, freezing of campus free speech, snatching of students off the streets, and threats to the bottom line all contribute to destabilizing the educational paths of students, and the ability of the faculty and the staff to provide students with the education, research opportunities, and higher education experiences they are seeking at these institutions. I am joined on this installment of PostScript by three members of an organic group of educators—across disciplines—who came together in the early days of the new Trump Administration to try to figure out how to best support students at different institutions. One of the results of this collaboration among academics and educators across disciplines, institutions, and parts of the country, was to craft a letter directed at university administrators, governmental entities, and the public, explaining the value and import of education, especially in a democracy, and the need for a diversity of voices and contributors to that enterprise. I discuss the origin of the group, the genesis of the letter (which is available to sign here), and the deep concerns among those who work in higher education in the United States with Alison Gash, Daniel Laurison, and Nathan Lents. Join Karen this week as we sit down with Dr. Emily Levy, founder and director of EBL Coaching, to explore the complexities of reading comprehension, a skill crucial for learners of all ages. While phonics and decoding often dominate discussions around reading challenges, Dr. Levy highlights the often-overlooked significance of comprehension, explaining that it's the very essence of why we read. Tune in to learn about common signs parents notice when their children struggle with comprehension and how these challenges often emerge as students transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn." Dr. Levy shares actionable strategies, such as the tri-colored highlighting method, which helps students become active readers by identifying topics, main ideas, and key details. From auditory techniques for younger learners to practical interventions for high school students tackling complex subjects, Dr. Levy emphasizes the importance of tailored, research-based approaches, and she also addresses how attention challenges like ADHD can compound comprehension issues and offers ways to adapt strategies accordingly, so whether you're a parent, educator, or simply curious about enhancing reading skills, this episode provides valuable insights into fostering a lifelong love of reading and learning. Show Notes: [1:52] - Many students struggle with reading comprehension, especially during the grade 3 to 4 transition. [4:25] - Research-based strategies like tri-colored highlighting help students actively engage and comprehend material. [6:30] - Emily discusses how younger students benefit from auditory-focused comprehension strategies, while older students apply strategies to coursework. [8:50] - Teaching students to form mental images while reading significantly enhances their comprehension skills. [10:21] - With the right methods, most students show reading progress within a month, aided by multimedia tools. [12:29] - Dr. Levy argues that active reading strategies improve focus and comprehension but are customized for each child's needs. [14:24] - Parents can enhance comprehension by reading together, asking questions, and encouraging discussions about content. [16:43] - Engaging struggling readers with topics they enjoy builds confidence and fosters a love for reading. [19:12] - Emily points out how encouraging regular reading and providing classroom accommodations supports comprehension and standardized test performance. [22:42] - One-on-one multisensory tutoring supports special education students, available both locally and globally.   Links and Related Resources: EBL Coaching - Website Connect with Us: Get on our Email List Book a Consultation Get Support and Connect with a ChildNEXUS Provider Register for Our Self-Paced Mini Courses: Support for Parents Who Have Children with ADHD, Anxiety, or Dyslexia    The Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast is intended for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or legal advice, diagnosis, or treatment. When it comes to writing, there is so much happening behind the scenes. It is so much more than sitting down, grabbing a pencil, and putting words on paper. In today's episode, we'll explore the challenges students face when it comes to writing. From motor skills to executive functioning, today's guest explains the complexities of the writing process.  Shanna Trombetta is an Educational Therapist and she joins the Diverse Thinking Different Learning Podcast to help us better understand not only the writing process and the challenges students face, but also ways we can support struggling students at home and in the classroom. She shares practical strategies and insights to empower parents and educators in guiding children through the whirlwind of creativity, skill, and determination that is writing.   Show Notes: [3:16] - A lot of learners who come into Shanna's practice struggle with writing. [4:24] - Shanna describes some of the things that are commonly a struggle when it comes to writing. There's so much happening at one time. [5:39] - It is common for students to have a lot of great ideas, but the mechanics of writing hold them up, and they wind up not writing anything. [7:32] - One way to support kids with writing is by providing them with a structure. [9:37] - People who don't struggle with executive functioning can typically create their own structure. But many kids need to be shown how to organize their information. [11:24] - When she works with students, Shanna helps them develop and use tools. [13:08] - What is background knowledge and why is it important for writing? [15:01] - Shanna describes writing around themes to help with structure. [16:57] - Chunking is a great strategy that helps students take one step at a time. [19:01] - Keeping a checklist as they write is another tool that can alleviate the stress of keeping track of things in their mind. [21:00] - Assessment data is really helpful for Shanna so she knows to target some of the spelling patterns that are a challenge for a student. [23:16] - So often students know what they want to write about. Strategies to get the information out are not “cheating.” [26:22] - Writing is an area where many students experience stress. Make it fun. [28:30] - While struggling, it is hard to remain motivated. Shanna shares some ways to keep students positive while they're learning.   About Our Guest: Shanna Trombetta is an Educational Therapist affiliated with the Association of Educational Therapists, dedicated to serving the community of Los Angeles. The COVID-19 pandemic affected student learning across the board. While almost all students declined academically, a report from The Center for Learner Equity found that students with disabilities were especially impacted. Students with disabilities often face wide and persistent achievement gaps. With the more than 7 million young people with disabilities in the United States, it begs the question of what more we can do to support them. What challenges do students with disabilities face? How can we create more inclusive spaces and services for these students to thrive? And how can we help our schools be more equitable and supportive when it comes to special education? In this episode, Kevin is joined by Lauren Rhim to discuss how we can better support students with disabilities.
