Episode No. 697 features curator Sarah Humphreville and author Marisa Anne Bass. With Eric Crosby, Humphreville is the co-curator of "Gertrude Abercrombie: The Whole World is a Mystery." The exhibition survey's Abercrombie's synthesis of surrealism, landscape, portraiture and still-life, and is the most comprehensive presentation of the artist's work to date. It is at the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh through June 1 before traveling to the Colby College Museum of Art. An excellent catalogue was published by the Carnegie and DelMonico Books. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for $50-55. Bass is the author of The Monument's End: Public Art and the Modern Republic, which was recently released by Princeton University Press. The book finds the origin of many of today's questions around monuments and memory within the early modern Netherlands. Among the artists Bass discusses are Rembrandt, Dirck van Delen, Hendrick de Keyser, Spencer Finch, Thomas Hirschhorn, and more. Bass is a professor at Yale University. Her previous books include Insect Artifice: Nature and Art in the Dutch Revolt and Jan Gossart and the Invention of Netherlandish Antiquity. Amazon and Bookshop offer "The Monument's End" for $20-42. VOICES ON ART - The VAN HORN Gallery Podcast, hosted by Daniela Steinfeld
A talk with Florian Peters-Messer, passionate collector of contemporary art. Florian co-curated the exhibitions "Fuck Your Fear" at VAN HORN in 2019 and "Empört Euch!/Time For Outrage" with Linda Peitz at Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf in 2020, where he also serves as member of the boards of the friends of the museum. Florian is the author of two books and runs a family business with seat in Viersen, Germany. He talks about how his art teacher at school ignited the deep and lasting interest for contemporary art in him, how meeting artist Thomas Hirschhorn in the 1990's changed his whole outlook on art and that he feels more and more drawn to political, social and psychological art. He talks about his process of collecting, citing examples like "Rotterdam Rostock" by artist Erik van Lieshout and talks about feeling a certain kind of responsibility to collect and preserve these more complicated works of art for the public. We talk in depth about how anger can be a destructive force and a danger for democracy, as well as a source of creativity when expressed in works of art, like in the installations by artist Henrike Naumann. Florian reminds us that art plays an important role in understanding and reflecting society and the human condition and that preserving our environment and having real human contact are what we need just now. Januar net. Dowéinst proposéieren d'Kerstin Thalau an d'Marie-Noëlle Farcy vum Mudam Iech elo eng Audio-Féierung duerch d'Installatioun.
In this episode of In the Foreground, Caro Fowler speaks with Lisa Lee, Associate Professor of Art History at Emory University and Florence Gould Foundation Fellow at the Clark in spring 2020. While a fellow, Lisa worked on a project tentatively titled “Thomas Hirschhorn’s Real Abstraction, 1984–94,” which focuses on a critical period in the life of the Swiss artist, who is known for his work in collage and monument-making, primarily with found materials. Through working with these materials, often in public spaces, his art grapples with the political, economic, and social conditions of contemporary life. Lisa also discusses her work on the German artist Isa Genzken. This conversation explores Lisa’s interest in the tension of what she describes as work that highlights the possibility of art and its everyday political power.
Some contemporary artists take moral risks in order to confront an audience with what they think is the truth. Some even use other people as part of their works. We discuss artworks from the third chapter of Ways of Looking: Thomas Hirschhorn’s Touching Reality (2013) and Santiago Sierra’s 160 cm Line Tattooed on 4 People (2000). Note […]
Doug talks about ways to assess the health of our spiritual lives. He looks at artist Thomas Hirschhorn's concept of Energy-Yes, Quality-No; relationship versus legalism; the S/spirit of our theology and our ability to hear and follow the voice of Jesus. Also, there is a special brief apperance from Christian Mickey Mouse. Clearly the best show of the year!
Summer’s drawing to a close. And so we wistfully dream of Augusts past on this, the avant-est garde of podcasts. Thomas Hirschhorn and philosophical fan art, sneaky teens, Batman’s secret hotel, Nickelodeon auf Deutsch, bull semen, and Manifesta: the biennial backpacking through Europe after college instead of getting a job. So Whether you’re into rappin’ pandas or critiquin’ the flawed museography of bienialle model, there’s something here for you!
Thomas Hirschhorn’s South Bronx installation brilliantly embodies the belief that art should be part of everyday life See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

THIS WEEK: Duncan and Richard interview James Rondeau, superstar curator and Cecelia Edefalk, superstar artist. We just bought the right to the word "superstar" so we are compelled to use it as much as possible. Stealing liberally from the AIC's press release bank we now paste the following for your enlightenment. "The Art Institute of Chicago presents the first solo U.S. exhibition of Swedish artist Cecilia Edefalk as part of its Focus exhibitions of contemporary art. Double White Venus, a series of 12 paintings all titled Double White Venus, will be on view in Gallery 139 of the museum from February 2 to April 23, 2006. Born in 1954, Edefalk draws viewers in by exploring, through repetition as well as innovative installations, the mechanics of making and looking at painted images. Edefalk works slowly and deliberately, in direct contrast to our high-speed, image-based world; she began Double White Venus in 1999 and completed its 12 paintings over the course of nearly 7 years." James Rondeau is the Frances and Thomas Dittmer Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, and a damn nice guy. He has overseen the significant growth and expansion in recent years of the Art Institute of Chicago's commitment to contemporary art. Brian Andrews our west coast correspondent has really been earning his keep these days. This week he interviews Andrew Bancroft aka the superstar rapper Jelly D. from the brilliant Maximum Wage video. "The son of an ex-pool hustler and former Catholic nun, Andrew Bancroft grew up in Maine, where he developed an early love of acting and music. Andrew graduated with honors from Wesleyan UniversitySan Francisco in 2000. Andrew's many film credits include the title role in Gabriel Angel Of The Lord, as well as directing and starring as rapper "Jelly Donut" in Illbilly's mock music video Maximum Wage .
