Hans-Josef Fell Started the Feed-In-Tariff: (The Most Important Person Alive)

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 4, 2025 81:46

Solar energy was the most expensive energy in the world 25 years ago and now it is the least expensive energy in the world. This is because Hans-Josef Fell invented a policy called the Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) that made it a good financial decision to invest in solar back when solar was very expensive. This caused mass production of solar technologies and the price of solar systems went down orders of magnitude. The first FIT program was in Hans-Josef's hometown in Bavaria Germany and was capped at 15kW for the entire program (now that is how much solar that is over my head). The FIT price was 2 Marks (pre-Euro money) per kWh, which was about $1 US. With the FIT, there was a law requiring the utility to pay the solar system owner a price for the electricity for usually 20 years, so that people will have the incentive to purchase grid-tied solar. 1000 years from now, Hans-Josef will be recognized as saving the planet and as the most important person of our era.   Topics Covered: Hans-Josef Fell's Credentials: Started the world's first Feed-In-Tariff Co-author of the German Renewable Energy Sources Act 2000 with Hermann Scheer Member of the German Parliament representing the 15 years (Green Party) President of Energy Watch Group Author of Global Cooling Past Vice President of Eurosolar City Counselor School Teacher   Awards: Global Leadership Award in Advancing Solar Energy Policy – In Honor of Hermann Scheer, January 2019 LUI Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilization, Recognizing lifetime achievements for sustainable global development, January 2018 Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, January 2015 Bavarian Order of Merit, January 2012 Bonda Award – European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA), January 2006 Nuclear-Free Future Award, January 2001 Energy Globe Award, January 2000 Solar Award – European Solar Energy Association (EUROSOLAR), January 1994   I met Hans-Josef Fell at the Intersolar Germany conference in May (also known as The Smarter E) thanks to Tomasz Slusarz, who invited me to a Cleantech Business Club dinner near the Hofbräuhaus München, (where I drank beer as a teenager). In this episode Sean learns all about quinone flow batteries, ferrocyanide, and a lot more, including how desalination and air conditioning are related and can use the same membrane redox-flow technology.   It was a pleasure to have a very intelligent guest with degrees from Harvard and Stanford. We will learn what a flow battery is and its benefits and how they expect to be a greater part of the renewable mix in the future.   The water-based technology is different from the acid-based vanadium redox flow batteries, which require vanadium, and much of the vanadium comes from Russia, while quinone can easily be made anywhere, lessening dependence on faraway places, which fits with where our economy seems to be headed.   Here are some of the topics we cover:   What is a flow battery? Thermal runaway What is LDES? Your definition and benefits Different types of LDES Flow batteries benefits Benefits vs Vanadium or Zinc Bromine or others Full to no charge how many times How long does the electrolyte and membrane last? Toxicity Power block cost DOE 250/kW 40/kWh What did you do with that $100 Can you theoretically use electrolyte for an EV? How did you get DOE funding? What is quinone Pioneered at Harvard Energy density and specific energy? In this podcast we talk about a type of solar glass that contains a semitransparent layer of perovskite thin film solar tech that you are encouraged to put on top of your crystalline silicon modules to make a hybrid multijunction solar sandwich. The perovskite catches more of the blue side of the light spectrum and lets the red side of the spectrum that crystalline silicon likes through to get the best of both worlds.   This tech is made in Southern California with real rocket scientists.   Scott has a history with Flex, Nextracker and a lot or important companies in the industry.   Topics covered: Perovskites ABX3 Multijunction Monolithic Tandem Active Glass Crystalline Silicon Thin Film Solar Sanyo Panasonic Hetero Junction Technology Bifacial Solar TopCon  PERC = Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact Mono PERC PERC = Passivated Emitter and Rear Contact IBC = Interdigitated Back Contact Caelux Industry Bandgap perovskite in the future Vacuum Technology JPL = NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory NexTracker South East Asian operations Tariffs IRA = Inflation Reduction Act Perovskite's Technology advancements at Caelux Caelux customers Larger modules Flex Company Scott's career at Flex Triple and Quadruple Junction Founder of Caleux - John Iannelli Comparison of Perovskites Initiatives of US vs China RE+ SNEC   Reach out Scott Graybeal here: Website: www.caelux.com Caelux Linkedin: www.linkedin.com/company/caelux-corporation News: www.caelux.com/news Blog:  www.caelux.com/blog/ Linkedin: www.linkedin.com/in/scottgraybeal   Learn more at www.solarSEAN.com and be sure to get NABCEP certified by taking Sean's classes at www.heatspring.com/sean
