We had a great time talking with Juliet Lloyd about her soul-pop-folk sound, Gem and the Holograms, burn out, and the utility of therapy. Juliet Lloyd is an acclaimed singer/songwriter who splits her time between Nashville, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C. Across her 20-year career as a writer and artist, Juliet has released three albums, garnering placements on television shows on MTV and VH1 and airplay on more than 175 radio stations across the country. Released on October 25th, Lloyd's new album Carnival is the culmination of years away from the music industry grind, the hours spent writing through some of life's hardest challenges, and the reintroduction of an artist now ripe with wisdom and experience. Recorded in an unhurried process over nearly 15 months and produced by Todd Wright (Lucy Woodward, Butch Walker, Toby Lightman), Carnival's nine songs are a study in contrasts: Light and dark, devastating and self-deprecating, apologetic and angry, conversational and conceptual. They are genre-fluid, weaving elements of pop, folk, soul, and rock to create a vibrant and often unexpected platform for Lloyd's unflinching storytelling. This discussion follows Shane's secret love for songwriting while being a hairdresser and how his music journey began. The two also talk about all of the amazing people that helped Shane along the way. Shane and Sara share stories of experiences in the music industry and working together on their own songs. Stevens has had multiple singles released to country radio and scored his first Billboard number 1 country hit, "American Honey," with Lady Antebellum in 2010.The song was co-written with Hillary Lindsey and Cary Barlowe.Stevens signed his first publishing deal with Famous Music in 2001 before signing with Major Bob Music five years later. Stevens co-wrote two songs with Rochelle and country music star Sara Evans for Evans' 2014 album Slow Me Down. He also co-wrote the only original song and title track on Evans' Christmas album, At Christmas, with Toby Lightman. He then contributed 4 songs to the 2014 Jesse McCartney album In Technicolor, including the second single, "Superbad." He moved to Los Angeles in 2014 to pursue a new direction as a writer, vocal producer, and artist developer in the pop and R&B world. That same year, Stevens founded his own publishing and artist development company, Holy Graffiti LLC, administered by Kobalt Music Group. The first act under his development, The Heirs, has been signed to Capitol Records and they released their debut EP, "Ecliptic," on August 28. For 2015, Stevens has contributed songs to several pop artists, such as "Everlasting Love," co-written with Victoria Monet and Tommy Brown, on Fifth Harmony's debut album Reflection; "Paper Doll" for Bea Miller's album Not An Apology; "Paradise" for Little Boots' album Working Girl; and At Sunset's single "Every Little Thing." He's worked on songs for many popular artists, such as the track "Step On Up" from Ariana Grande's album Dangerous Woman. Two songs off of Martina Stoessel & Jorge Blanco's album Tini, "I Want You" and "Yo Te Amo a Ti," were written by Shane as well. Most recently, Shane worked on what Pop Crush has dubbed the song of the summer "What You Want" by The Heirs. He also co-wrote "Infinite Love" by country star Sara Evans & Chrisley Know's Best star Todd Chrisley, which was featured on the season 4 finale. In 2019, Stevens sold a country music musical to Paramount Pictures, where he co wrote the music with his childhood friend Karyn Rochelle. Stevens signed a worldwide co-publishing deal with Bob Doyle's publishing company Purplebeat in 2021 where Stevens received his first Grammy nomination for the song "Fancy Like" by Walker Hayes. Noble Steed Music: a record label with distribution through DashGo, as well as an artist services company offering world-class service to independent artists. In this episode Jason shares how he connected to music early on in his life. He started with piano lessons when he was just 11 years old. Jason says, "music has given him everything". He also plays the drums. Jason moved forward and took the stage and the road playing in a band. After 5 years of playing in the band, he then moved on to be an assistant at a record label. You will hear more about this part of his journey. During this time he was then mentored by several who really helped him launch his career. Jason learned the music business on the independent side of the record company world, with early work experience at Artemis Records, Studio E Records and TVT Records. He was co-founded the Warner Music distributed-label Rock Ridge Music in 2004, later to be named that company's President. Under Jason's leadership, the label enjoyed the success of high-charting releases by Sister Hazel, Rachel Platten, Five.Bolt.Main, and a #1 jazz record by former baseball great Bernie Williams to name a few.He currently manages artists including: Constantine Maroulis, Toby Lightman, and many more that you can view on www.noblesteedmusic.com. Too many of us get the signal, ignore it, and than the flare is gone". Jason shares that he is just Dad with his kids, but that the gold records he has are somewhat cool to them. Additionally, Jason donates his time to the Music Is Love Exchange, a charitable organization that leads groups of musicians and fans to Guatemala annually for week-long service trips. Today is the first of three episodes in a row featuring Women Road Warriors in honor of International Women’s Month on Tales of the Road Warriors. My guest is Toby Lightman. In our brief talk we touched on another problem men never experience, the struggle to have a child. Though a man can share some of the emotional weight of this struggle, we can never know the physical and internal anguish that a woman experiences. Toby recently captured this in her song ‘Begin Again”. I had no idea what the song was about going into this conversation, so you’ll hear me getting woke in real time. Go To Show Notes Page

Sarah Lightman hails from the East Coast. She grew up in Hightstown, NJ, and later attended college at Temple University to study musical theater. She has been submerged in performing arts her whole life. Much of her family are also musicians and artists. Her dad Aaron Lightman was signed with RCA Poppy Records, her cousin Toby Lightman is also a successful singer/songwriter, and her cousin Jonathan Russell (jazz violinist and movie composer) is featured playing violin on Sarah's newly released song "Fear." Sarah just released her EP Friday the 13th of January 2017. “My music is rooted from personal experiences to help inspire others to heal from day to day struggles. I see so much sadness, pain, and sickness running wild in the world today, especially with the recent shooting in Vegas and the death of Chester Bennington. I feel the need to take responsibility for my own pain in hopes to help others get back on their feet. Suffering is inevitable, but by making the choice to see the wounds we already have, we can start to move forward toward a healthier place.” www.sarah-lightman.com

Listen to the interview here!Tell me a little about yourself and your writing.I grew up in New Jersey and now live in Washington, D.C. I work by day as an editor and researcher, but I write about medieval history: my book Becoming Charlemagne: Europe, Baghdad, and the Empires of A.D. 800 was published by HarperCollins in 2006.2. Tell me about the story that you've created a soundtrack/playlist for. Becoming Charlemagneretells the story of the coronation of Karl, King of the Franks, whom history remembers as Charlemagne. The book is short, almost novelistic in style, and intended for readers who have no prior knowledge of medieval history.Charlemagne's coronation in the year 800 was one of the most important events in European history, but I've tried to put it in context by taking the reader to Rome, Constantinople, and Baghdad. I've also offered glimpses of medieval Jewish communities and the routines of ninth-century peasants.3. What is your playlist? (To get Jeff's playlist all in one convenient place, check out his iMix) William Shatner featuring Joe Jackson, "Common People"When you're holed up in an air-conditioned apartment writing an imaginative re-creation of the difficult lives of medieval peasants, only a force as powerful as William Shatner can keep you from taking yourself too seriously.Fiona Apple, "Criminal"I listened to this creepy song whenever I needed to write about Irene of Byzantium, the ruthless empress who had her own son blinded. Her power-grab and brief diplomatic relations with Charlemagne earned her an entire chapter in my book. Associating her with this song attributes to her a conscience that she probably didn't have in real life.Gogol Bordello, "Start Wearing Purple"This song appears to be about a mail-order bride, but I like to pretend it's about imperial politics. I get a kick out of hearing the band's wild Ukranian singer declaring "I know it all from Diogenes to the Foucault."Neil Finn, "She Will Have Her Way"The lyrics are deeply sad, but the music is sprightly. That contradiction is a nice little lens through which to view medieval history.Thompson Twins, "The Gap"Stop giving me that look. This song was on my mind as I wrote about medieval Baghdad because of its subtle message about globalization, intercultural conflict, and the need for increased East-West cooperation. Not buying it? Then just dance already. Anna Nalick, "Satellite"Although medieval people never had to worry that the star they wished on might turn out to be a man-made object, this pop anthem can, if you let it, evoke images of lonely monks and wistful Carolingian princesses.Audioslave, "Cochise"I have no idea what this song is really about, but it makes me want to go conquer somebody.Toby Lightman, "Angels and Devils"I first heard this one on the short-lived TV show "Wonderfalls." The song is actually about a woman who plans to ambush her cheating lover, but the angel/devil imagery and the singer's relentless sense of purpose reminded me of the conspirators who attacked Pope Leo III on the streets of Rome. That ambush set in motion centuries of history--and the second half of Becoming Charlemagne.Colin Hay, "Overkill"This song has nothing to do with Charlemagne, but it has everything to do with Charlemagne-induced insomnia, especially in its depiction of sleeplessly wandering the streets at night: "Well, at least there's pretty lights..."France Gall, "Sacre Charlemagne"There aren't many pop songs about Charlemagne; I take what I can get. France Gall was cute as a button.James McMurtry, "Charlemagne's Home Town"Although I discovered this one after the book was published, I was impressed that a singer could tie together such diverse subjects as Charlemagne, international travel, and long-distance relationships in a single country song.Jeff Buckley, "Hallelujah"I prefer this more sentimental cover to Leonard Cohen's original. Packed with images of sex, love, history, and religion, this song captures the intense wistfulness of bidding adieu to figures you've "known" for several years as they fade back into history's shadows. If you're looking for an unusual creative challenge, try writing new verses to this song. It takes real effort to rhyme "hallelujah" and not sound completely ridiculous.4. What does music mean to you? To your writing?I rely on music for escapism. Writing is intense, lonely work, all the more so because writing about the Middle Ages pulls my mind far away from the generally amiable world in which I live. I understand why most writers need classical music or instrumentals to get them going, but I need rock and pop music--songs like those on my playlist--to bring me back to my senses.5. What kind of music do you like to write to?I'll often listen to music to get inspired, but I rarely write to music. Strange as it may sound, I write to the noise of television.6. If this story was made into a movie, who would you want to do the soundtrack? If Becoming Charlemagne were made into a decent movie, I'd want the music to be reminiscent of the soundtrack to the HBO series "Rome," in all its moodiness and exoticism. I've often joked that I'd settle for a Sci-Fi Channel original movie, in which case I'd want heavy metal all the way. Any adaptation is bound to be unrecognizable, so it might as well be highly stylized and fun.To learn more about Jeff, visit his website Quid Plura?.Next week, I interview author Susan Higginbotham.
Interview and music from Toby Lightman. Also full songs from Carmireli, The Attic, Brett Young, Bathgate, Sammy and Sasha, Matt Hartke, Mesani, Hotspur, Mihran, and Suga Bush.
