The two also talk about all of the amazing people that helped Shane along the way. Shane and Sara share stories of experiences in the music industry and working together on their own songs. About Shane Stevens: Stevens has written for a variety of country and pop acts, including Sara Evans, Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum, Kellie Pickler, Jordin Sparks, Ronnie Milsap, Jo Dee Messina, and Hayden Panettiere. Stevens has had multiple singles released to country radio and scored his first Billboard number 1 country hit, "American Honey," with Lady Antebellum in 2010.The song was co-written with Hillary Lindsey and Cary Barlowe.Stevens signed his first publishing deal with Famous Music in 2001 before signing with Major Bob Music five years later. Stevens co-wrote two songs with Rochelle and country music star Sara Evans for Evans' 2014 album Slow Me Down. He also co-wrote the only original song and title track on Evans' Christmas album, At Christmas, with Toby Lightman. He then contributed 4 songs to the 2014 Jesse McCartney album In Technicolor, including the second single, "Superbad." He moved to Los Angeles in 2014 to pursue a new direction as a writer, vocal producer, and artist developer in the pop and R&B world. That same year, Stevens founded his own publishing and artist development company, Holy Graffiti LLC, administered by Kobalt Music Group. The first act under his development, The Heirs, has been signed to Capitol Records and they released their debut EP, "Ecliptic," on August 28. For 2015, Stevens has contributed songs to several pop artists, such as "Everlasting Love," co-written with Victoria Monet and Tommy Brown, on Fifth Harmony's debut album Reflection; "Paper Doll" for Bea Miller's album Not An Apology; "Paradise" for Little Boots' album Working Girl; and At Sunset's single "Every Little Thing." He's worked on songs for many popular artists, such as the track "Step On Up" from Ariana Grande's album Dangerous Woman. He also worked with Meghan Trainor on the song "Woman Up" from her second album Thank You and Toby Randall's song "Misfits." Two songs off of Martina Stoessel & Jorge Blanco's album Tini, "I Want You" and "Yo Te Amo a Ti," were written by Shane as well. Most recently, Shane worked on what Pop Crush has dubbed the song of the summer "What You Want" by The Heirs. He also co-wrote "Infinite Love" by country star Sara Evans & Chrisley Know's Best star Todd Chrisley, which was featured on the season 4 finale. In 2019, Stevens sold a country music musical to Paramount Pictures, where he co wrote the music with his childhood friend Karyn Rochelle. Stevens signed a worldwide co-publishing deal with Bob Doyle's publishing company Purplebeat in 2021 where Stevens received his first Grammy nomination for the song "Fancy Like" by Walker Hayes. We thought 2024 was going to be dominated by a waterfall of new releases from Old Guard Superstars like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande and Dua Lipa. But while they've each had success, the main story of the last 12 months has been the auspicious establishment of a new generation of pop divas led by Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter, but also featuring Ice Spice, Gracie Abrams, Victoria Monet and more. For this week's B-Side, DJ Louie is joined by LA Times Pop Critic Mikael Wood and Vulture's Jason P. Frank to discuss how this new group of girlies has coalesced and taken ahold of the zeitgeist, before ranking ten newly-minted Queens of Pop in the ultimate New Pop Girl Power Ranking. Who's got the juice to turn this hot streak into a career and who will be forgotten by next summer? Louie, Jason and Mikael are here to answer all those questions and place their bets. We had the pleasure of interviewing Skylar Simone over Zoom video! In the dynamic realm of music, Skylar Simone emerges as one to watch, blending raw authenticity with impeccable control to create a sound that resonates deeply with audiences worldwide. The daughter of an NFL player, Skylar grew up in multiple cities, creating a unique mix of cultural influences. Upon discovering her vocal talent and love for music at the age of 9, she began to hone her performing ability by singing the National Anthem at various stadiums across the country. Her tight-knit family ultimately moved to Los Angeles to support her dream of launching a successful music career. “I feel like I'm this veteran, even though I'm only 22 years old, because I've been out here hustling for over a decade,” Skylar reflects.Skylar's musical journey is a testament to her unwavering dedication and natural talent. From mastering the drums to sharpening her skills on the piano, her versatility defines a uniqueness that demands attention. Drawing inspiration from iconic figures such as Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Minnie Riperton, as well as contemporary artists like SZA and RAYE, Skylar infuses her own unique flair into every note, crafting a signature sound that is emotionally rich.Skylar formed a clear bond with legendary producer Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II (Bruno Mars, Silk Sonic, Victoria Monet), as evidenced on the title track of her upcoming Def Jam EP release. “Shiver” is a passionately honest song from a distinctly feminine perspective that captures the sweet chase and sensation of romantic touch. “Once my body shakes, you'll know it's time,”she expresses between pronounced, exasperated breaths before foreshadowing the feelings evoked by the single: “You'll know what I like when I shiver"). Her work with D'Mile, which also includes “Shut Up,” leaves Skylar plenty of room to play with texture in clever ways, particularly when it comes to her vocal range, which encompasses a 4-octave kaleidoscope of tones. Having recently signed with Tunji Balogun and Def Jam Recordings, Skylar is ready to catapult into the next phase of her career with her new EP, Shiver, largely produced in the US, with moments bred in London with Scribz and Talay Riley (Kendrick Lamar, Doja Cat, 21 Savage, Khalid). The project serves as a testament to her artistic growth and evolution, and a musical re-introduction. Exploring themes of love of another and the self, and acting from a place of heartbreak and confidence—as well as finding the latter through the pain of the former—the project embodies the contrasts of human emotion, inviting listeners on a visceral journey of self-discovery. From the flashy, syncopated groove of "Permission" to the aching vulnerability of "Someone Who Cares," each track showcases Skylar's range and prowess as both a vocalist and a storyteller. In everything she touches, visually and sonically, sexy playfulness and buoyant youthful energy reign supreme.Throughout her career, authenticity and diligence have been Skylar's guiding principles. With lyrics that are equal parts blunt and sweet, she invites listeners into her world: one of self-confidence, acceptance, and motivation to move forward. She is poised to make a lasting impact on the world stage: “There's this sense of freedom that only music can guide us toward,” Simone reflects. It is here that the true power of her craft, and by extension her voice, blossom. We want to hear from you! A handful of artists are having their moment. Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Coco Jones, Victoria Monet, the list goes on. Will these artists be as big as Beyonce? Who knows, but they broke through an industry that becomes harder and harder to break through. But how does this change the strategy for the major labels? How are the companies outside of the label system handlling things differently. What do the economics of a true non-superstar model look like?To break it all down, I'm joined by Tati Cirisano from MIDiA Research. We first visited this topic in 2022, but so much has changed since then. Hope you enjoy! This episode is presented by State Farm, the home for your small business needs. This week, Meghan and Melisa are feeling...backed up. Let's just say they're both taking for granted the simple joys of daily regularity. In a desperate attempt to escape the beige food era (think beige walls, beige clothes, beige...), they dive into their recent DNA test results (thanks, 23andMe!).But enough about their guts and genes! They also dish on Victoria Monet's new sister, dissect a recent Ariana Grande interview, and get ready to celebrate the most patriotic time of the year - the Olympics! (Maybe they'll even get inspired to move more than just their bowels.)Plus, they call out those who hide their nepotism (you know who you are!), Melisa complains about two terrible movies she watched (because apparently suffering is her hobby), and Meghan tries (and probably fails) to recommend some decent movies to break Melisa's beige movie curse.Tune in for laughs, honesty (maybe too much honesty?), and a reminder to appreciate the little things in life...like a good BM. Rory & Demaris catch Mal up on what their club swag was like as a team, and then Rory comes to claim his throne as the biggest video vixen of the cast (11:44).
