Laura continues her conversation with award winning investigative journalist, author and outdoors expert Kathryn Miles about her re-investigation into the double murder of Lollie Winans and Julie Williams, which is detailed in her book Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. Laura and Kathryn discuss Kara Robinson's abduction and rape by predatory stalker, Richard Marc Evonitz. Evonitz abducted Kara in the blink of an eye, in broad daylight, and no-one knew it had even happened. Evonitz was a prolific serial perpetrator who targeted, stalked, abducted, and raped women. Laura believes Kara's abduction seemed much more an in the moment, opportunistic attack. Kara managed to escape due to her resilience and quick thinking. Laura and Kathryn break down Evonitz's behaviour and the timeline and discuss whether he murdered Lollie and Julie as well as other abductions and murders that might be linked including Alicia Showalter Reynolds, Anne McDaniel, Sofia Silva, Kristin and Kati Lisk and the double murder of Cathy Thomas and Becky Dowski. Content warning: Laura and Kathryn discuss and compare the behaviour of the perpetrator at the crime scenes with what is known about Evonitz's behaviour. This is not an easy listen. Laura interviews award winning investigative journalist, author, and outdoor expert Kathryn Miles about her re-investigation into the double murder of Lollie Winans and Julie Williams, which is detailed in her book Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. In May 1996, two skilled backcountry leaders, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams, entered Virginia's Shenandoah National Park for a week-long backcountry camping trip. The free-spirited and remarkable young couple had met and fallen in love the previous summer while working at a world-renowned outdoor program for women. They decided to pitch their tent in a beautiful and remote location close to the river. Lollie and Julie were brutally murdered, and their bodies were discovered in their sleeping bags. Their tent had been slashed open and there was some unusual crime scene behaviour as well as paraphernalia left at the crime scene. Their beloved dog, Taj, was also missing. Trigger warning: Laura and Kathryn discuss the crime scene in graphic detail as it holds a mirror up to the killer. Listener discretion is advised. #LollieWinans #JulieWilliams #Trailed #KathyrnMiles #Misogyny #WomenMatter #TheShenandoahMurders #Virginia #VictimBlaming #LanguageMatters #CrimeAnalyst #Expert #Analysis #TrueCrime #Podcast #Crime Clips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gCKxiE26_o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G930dH0VbL8 Kathryn's Book https://www.amazon.com/Trailed-Womans-Quest-Shenandoah-Murders/dp/1616209097 Information about the DASH, Coercive Control and Train the Trainer Masterclasses with Laura https://shoutout.wix.com/so/eeOI-OpnS?languageTag=en Crime Analyst You Tube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCksfRSwfwFqUCjcxKYju6_Q Crime Analyst Merch https://crime-analyst.myshopify.com/ Leave a Review If you want to support my work and Crime Analyst and if you enjoyed this episode, please leave a 5-star review here: https://www.crime-analyst.com/reviews/new/ Learn more about your ad choices. Kathryn Miles, author of "Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders" joins co-hosts Bill Thomas and Kristin Dilley to discuss her new book. Who killed Julie Williams and Lollie Winans in 1996? Why have the FBI and the National Park Service moved so slowly in this investigation? Is this a hate crime? Is there still untested evidence? Are the Shenandoah Murders related to the Colonial Parkway Murders? Kathryn Miles, author of "Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders" joins co-hosts Bill Thomas and Kristin Dilley to discuss her new book. Who killed Julie Williams and Lollie Winans in 1996? Why have the FBI and the National Park Service moved so slowly in this investigation? Is this a hate crime? Is there still untested evidence? Are the Shenandoah Murders related to the Colonial Parkway Murders? It's holiday gift time! If you're not sure what to get the true crime aficionado in your life, never fear! Mind Over Murder has you covered!GIFT OF BOOKS:1) A Killer by Design: Murderers, Mindhunters, and My Quest to Decipher the Criminal Mind-- Ann Burgess and Steven Constantine. If you're a fan of David Fincher's colossal hit MINDHUNTER, you won't want to miss the story of the real-life Wendy Carr, the brilliant psychiatric nurse who worked alongside Robert Ressler, John Douglas, and the other pioneering FBI agents in Quantico's Behavioral Science Unit. Even if you think you're familiar with the early days of the BSU from Douglas and Olshaker's books, trust me, you don't know the half of it! This book is a treat for anyone who wants more on the development of profiling.PAIR THIS WITH: Any of the initial books from Douglas and Olshaker; a viewing of Fincher's MINDHUNTER; or the Audible presentation of the book, beautifully read by Gabra Zackman. We interviewed Ann and Steven about their book on Mind Over Murder on our episode from July 18, 2022.2) Frozen in Fear: A True Story of Surviving the Shadows of Death-- Jane Carson-Sandler.Jane is one of the surviving victims of the Golden State Killer and she is one tough-as-nails lady! This short memoir details her life both before and after the attack and discusses how she put her life back together to both survive and to thrive in spite of her trauma.PAIR THIS WITH: Michelle McNamara and Paul Haynes “I'll Be Gone in the Dark”; the HBO mini-series of the same name; XG Productions Audible Original “Evil Has a Name.”3) When a Killer Calls-- John Douglas and Mark Olshaker.I'm an unabashed John Douglas fan; everything he and Mark Olshaker have ever written lives somewhere on my true crime bookshelves. But this is by far the best of their work and that is really saying something! The kidnapping and murder of Shari Smith is horrifying, but even more so is the behavior of the offender. It is so audacious and cruel that it sounds like something from a movie. John's work on the case will break your heart… but it is the work of a profiler at the top of his game!PAIR THIS WITH: Anything this dynamic duo have previously written! You will never get a boring or poorly written book from these guys!We interviewed Mark Olshaker about this book on Mind Over Murder on February 14th and February 21st, 2022.4) Journey to the Center of the Mind Books 1-3-- James Fitzgerald.Grab a hot drink, snuggle under a warm blanket, and leave yourself plenty of time to binge! Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald's career as both a uniformed cop and then an FBI profiler is full of ups and downs, which he skillfully and entertainingly details in his books. Get all 3 books if you want the full and unabridged Fitz story, though book 3 is my favorite as that's where we learn all about the Unabomb case and linguistic profiling. Make sure you check out his website for books and other merch (www.jamesrfitzgerald.com) including autographed posters.PAIR THIS WITH: Fitz's podcast The Fitz Files (which features a cameo from Kristin); the original drama MANHUNT: UNABOMBER; and the XG Productions Audible original “Where the Devil Belongs.”We interviewed Fitz on Mind Over Murder about the Unabomber and his books on June 30 and July 7, 2022.5) ShadowMan: An Elusive Psycho Killer and the Birth of FBI Profiling-- Ron Franscell. The story of Howard Teten and Patrick Mullany's profile of the Susie Jaeger kidnapping case was all new to me, but it's an absolutely enthralling story. These are the two men who started the BSU—the profiling legends we know today (Rob Ressler, John Douglas, Judd Ray) learned the ropes from Teten and Mullaney. The unsub at the heart of this story is your classic “nice guy next door” and it will definitely make you reevaluate what you think you know about your neighbors! It's a pulse pounding read!PAIR THIS WITH: If you're in the mood for a history of the early days of the BSU, start here, progress to Ann Burgess's “A Killer by Design”, then move on to the earliest Douglas and Olshaker collabs “Mindhunter” and “Journey into Darkness.” Take time for Robert Ressler's book “Whoever Fights Monsters” as well.6) Madman in the Woods—Jamie Gehring. What was it like to live literally next door to Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber? To have him show up at your door and even have him over for dinner? Jamie Gehring could tell you. She lived next to him in Montana. If you ever wanted to know who Ted Kaczynski was and how he evolved into the Unabomber, Jamie's book will bring you as close as you'll ever come, short of having a conversation with him yourself. This is a stunner of a memoir. I can't recommend it enough.PAIR THIS WITH: Jim Fitzgerald's JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE MIND, book 3; a viewing of MANHUNT: UNABOMBER; Audible original “Where the Devil Belongs”; the Audible version of this book, read by Jamie herself. We interviewed Jamie on Mind Over Murder on June 27th, 2022.7) Keeping On—Gemma Hoskins. You knew her and loved her on THE KEEPERS! But do you know the real Gemma Hoskins? You can by reading her book! Gemma's memoir is by turns funny, poignant, and insightful. There's plenty of info on Sister Cathy Cesnik's case and yes, there are some bombshells you won't want to miss!PAIR THIS WITH: A re-watch of THE KEEPERS! It's been a few years since it first aired, so it's more than time to give it another viewing! Pop some popcorn, grab a fuzzy blanket, and be prepared to give up a few hours of your life in a binge of epic proportions. We interviewed Gemma on Mind Over Murder on July 28th and August 4th.8. Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders—Kathryn Miles. This labor of love from Kate Miles is one of the best true crime reads in recent memory, tying together the murders of Julie Williams and Lollie Winans in the Shenandoah National Park with other missing and murdered women in Virginia. She discusses some compelling theories as to who may have murdered the women back in 1996 and sheds light on major issues within the NPS during that time period. It's thought-provoking and sensitive reporting. Highly recommended!PAIR THIS WITH: “The Cold Vanish” from Jon Billman (which we featured on last year's gift guide), which also explores disappearances and murders in national parks. We interviewed Kate on Mind Over Murder on May 16th and May 23rd of 2022.9) How to Catch a Killer and I Scream Man—Dr. Katherine Ramsland. We couldn't pick just one book out of Dr. Ramsland's whopping catalogue; you'll never get a bad book from this talented, astute, and prolific writer. But we opted for her two most recent releases—How to Catch a Killer is about the hunt for and capture of the world's most notorious serial killers including Rodney Alcala (the Dating Game killer); GSK; Aileen Wuoronos; and many more. This is part of the Profiles in Crime series, so if you love this one, there's more to come. And we couldn't neglect Dr. Ramsland's fiction debut … I Scream Man, featuring protagonist Annie Hunter who seems to be quite a bit like the good doctor herself! It's an excellent first book in a new series and we are looking forward to more! Check out all of Dr. Ramsland's books at www.katherineramsland.net.PAIR THIS WITH: Any of her 70 other books! I recommend the two that tie in to CSI and CRIMINAL MINDS.We interviewed Dr. Ramsland on Mind Over Murder on July 4 and July 11 of 2022.10) The Babysitter—Liza Rodman.Imagine, if you will, learning that your beloved childhood babysitter was a sadistic psychopath who was murdering women when he wasn't watching you. That's precisely what happened to Liza Rodman when she learned that Tony Costa, handyman and her childhood babysitter, was the ghoul responsible for murdering and dismembering four women in the Truro woods near Provincetown. The premise on its own is enough to make your skin crawl … learning what Tony Costa was actually doing made me want to sleep with the lights on! This pairs perfectly with HELLTOWN by Casey Sherman, which covers Tony Costa's crimes.PAIR THIS WITH: HELLTOWN, below!11) Helltown—Casey Sherman.Liza Rodman's childhood babysitter, Tony Costa, was a horrific serial killer who haunted the Cape Cod and Provincetown area, murdering and dismembering women. His horrific crimes and his court case are covered expertly in the book. Also explored is the pull the case had over two enigmatic local writers—Kurt Vonnegut and Normal Mailer. This meticulously researched and brilliantly crafted book was one of my favorite true crime reads of this year.PAIR THIS WITH: THE BABYSITTER, above! We interviewed Casey on Mind Over Murder on September 19th 202212) American Demon—Daniel Stashower. There's so much more to Eliot Ness than his time with the Untouchables. This deep dive into Ness's time in Cleveland and his work trying to solve the series of brutal slayings by the Butcher of Kingsbury Run is masterful. Stashower has a wonderful touch with historical crimes … they seem to come alive on the page. The book is meticulously researched, gorgeously written, and will keep you turning pages.PAIR THIS WITH: THE BEAUTIFUL CIGAR GIRL, Stashower's book about the murder of Mary Rogers and Edgar Allan Poe's involvement in it.We interviewed Dan on Mind Over Murder on October 31st, 2022.GIFTS OF SERVICE:1) You can help to solve a crime in one of two ways by going to DNASolves.com. You can either help to fund a case (or two or three) in any dollar amount, large or small, or you can follow the instructions on how to provide your own DNA to help grow the searchable law enforcement database.2) We know you love the work that Othram does as much as we do! They are absolutely smashing cold case solves! Did you know they have a ton of great merchandise to offer as well? Happy Holidays from Kristin and Bill!
As Appalachian Mysteria finished covering the story of Julie and Lollie, author Kathryn Miles completed her own book about the murders. In this episode, Kathryn uses her total access to Dierdre Enright's evidence to bring to light new information — including how we've been wrong about a key piece of evidence. Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders — Purchase Kathryn's book here. Interviewees: Kathryn Miles — Kathryn Miles is an award-winning journalist and science writer. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Saint Louis University and took both her Master of Arts and Doctorate in English from the University of Delaware. Miles is the author of five books: Adventures with Ari, All Standing, Superstorm, Quakeland, and Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. In 1996 two women who were experienced outdoor leaders didn't return from a week's remote camping in Virginia. Park rangers found them brutally murdered in their sleeping bags. Journalist and outdoor expert Kathryn Miles discovered many problems with the investigation. “All About Books” has a review of her book “Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders”
As I wrote a few months ago, with regard to true crime books, "All stories are worth telling well, but especially the difficult ones, when we need the writer's assurance as we walk down the dark passage."As someone who occasionally takes on such stories, I'm interested in how and why other true crime writers approach the work. My lead-off interview is with Kathryn Miles, author of "TRAILED: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders," about the horrific unsolved 1996 murders of two young women with Shenandoah National Park.Miles does what the best true crime writers do. She takes on the awesome responsibility of explaining murder, with compassion and clear-eyes and deeply empathetic reporting. As she writes in TRAILED, "Maybe, just maybe, when two selfless, joyful, beautiful humans die in a place, what's left behind is not the agony of their deaths, but the brilliance of their lives."Miles is the author of Superstorm: Nine Days Inside Hurricane Sandy and Quakeland: On the Road to America's Next Devastating Earthquake, among other books. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by RTIC, we are joined by Kathryn Miles. Kathryn is an award-winning journalist, science writer, and the author of five books, most recently "Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders", which is the focus of today's chat. We go deep on everything to do with this case, including the gruesome details of the murders, why this was not a random act of violence, why this case has yet to be solved, who Kathryn believes to be the perpetrator, and much more. A warning to listeners, this one goes into some pretty horrific details on the subjects of sexual assault and murder. If either of these subjects are especially triggering to you, we encourage you to skip ahead to the segments for this one. We then pivot from rape and murder to the triple crown of ice cream toppings. Typical backpacker radio stuff. On this edition of Parallax Views, journalist Kathyrn Miles joins the show to discuss her new true crime book Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. In the spring of May 1996, Julianne “Julie” Williams and Laura “Lollie” Winans went into Shenandoah National Park, part of the Appalachian trail. They were two bright young women in college with a future ahead of them. That future, however, was stolen as both Lollie and Julie were murdered in the woods of Shenandoah Nation Park. Their murder became nationwide news. So much so in fact that when George W. Bush became President of the United States, the Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales of announced that they had found a suspect and that the murder was a hate crime. You see, Lollie and Julie had been in a romantic relationship. As such, their murder could've been a hate crime. The culprit? A man by the name of Darrell David Rice. However, not all is as it seems. Kathyrn Miles takes us through her investigation of the Shenandoah murders explaining the missteps and even, in some cases, malfeasance by the FBI, National Park Service, and the Department of Justice. In doing show she cast doubt on Rice as the perpetrator (note: Rice has not been convicted, even to this day) and offers another suspect. But this isn't just the story of the investigation of the murders. It's also an exploration of what it's like to be a woman, LGBTQ+, or other marginalized identity exploring the frontier of the Appalachian trail and the ways in which that trail is experienced differently by men and women. We discuss all that and more on this edition of Parallax Views.
In May of 1996, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams headed to Shenandoah National Park on a backpacking trip. They were two avid outdoor women who were in love and celebrating their relationship, new jobs, and moving in together. Several days into their trip they went missing and eventually park rangers found that they had been brutally murdered. To this day the case has still not been solved and investigations have slowed down, until now. In this episode we speak to investigative journalist Kathryn Miles. Kathryn recently published her newest book, Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. She spent the past several years personally investigating this case discovering police cover ups, negligence in their investigations, lost records, and evidence that was never properly investigated. Today, she tells us about the evidence she has found, the likelihood of this cold case being solved, and how this horrific event has rocked the outdoor community. Book Recommendation : Trailed. This week, I was lucky to have author Kathryn Miles on the show. She has written a great new true crime book; Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. We have a wide ranging conversation about law enforcement, the keys to this case, and where do thing stands now? If you enjoy a guest who is well researched then this is a must listen. During their final days in the park, they descended the narrow remnants of a trail and pitched their tent in a hidden spot. After the pair didn't return home as planned, park rangers found a scene of horror at their campsite, their tent slashed open, their beloved dog missing, and both women dead in their sleeping bags. The unsolved murders of Winans and Williams continue to haunt all who had encountered them or knew their story. - Workman Publishing Kathryn Miles is represented by the Strothman Literary Agency. When award-winning journalist and outdoors expert Kathryn Miles begins looking into the case, she discovers conflicting evidence, mismatched timelines, and details that just don't add up. With unprecedented access to crucial crime-scene forensics and key witnesses—and with a growing sense of both mission and obsession—she begins to uncover the truth. An innocent man, Miles is convinced, has been under suspicion for decades, while the true culprit is a known serial killer, if only authorities would take a closer look.Intimate, page-turning, and brilliantly reported, Trailed is a love story and a call to justice—and a searching and urgent plea to make wilderness a safe space for women. TRAILED: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders-Kathyrn Miles
Kathryn Miles is the author of “Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders.” The book, published by Algonquin, officially goes on sale on May 3. “Trailed” is about the 1996 murders of Lolly Winans and Julie Williams. The two young women had entered Virginia's Shenandoah National Park to go on a week-long backcountry camping trip. When they didn't return, park rangers began searching and found a scene of horror at the women's campsite. The murders were never solved. Then, in 2016, on the 20th anniversary of the case, the FBI announced they wanted to reinvestigate. That's when Miles thought she had a magazine story on her hands. “As soon as I started working with the FBI on this case, as soon as I was able to access some of the case files from the court case, it was very obvious to me that this case was much more complicated,” Miles said. “That's when I realized that we weren't talking about a 5,000-word piece here. We were talking about a 100,000-word piece.” This is the second time Miles has been on the podcast. She was a guest on Episode 46 in September 2016, discussing her Boston Globe story about a woman got lost and died while hiking the Appalachian Trail. Miles is the author of five books, including “Quakeland: On the Road to America's Next Devastating Earthquake” and “Super Storm: Nine Days Inside Hurricane Sandy.” Her essays and articles have appeared in The New York Times, Outside, the Boston Globe, Politico, and more. She's been anthologized by “Best American Essays” and “Best American Sports Writing.”
