Former FBI agent Kathy Canning Mello and Lisa Zambetti (co host emeritus!) are joined by Bill Thomas and Kristin Dilley of the Mind over Murder podcast to talk about the breaking news in the Shenandoah Murders case in which law enforcement believe they have finally identified a brutal killer's identity in the killing of two young women. In May 1996, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams were murdered at their campsite in the popular Shenandoah National Park in the middle of rural Virginia, not far from a busy tourist resort called Skyland. Many people, including park and resort staff, had seen the happy, friendly couple in the area and were alarmed when they were reported missing. As experienced outdoorswomen, Lollie and Julie knew how to take care of themselves and each other. When their bodies were discovered, despite the evidence that the women had been brutally tortured and killed, law enforcement decided to not alert the public that a murderer could be in the park, and in fact diverted attention away from the crime. Ridiculous theories were floated as to the cause of their deaths such as it was the result of a bear attack or perhaps a murder-suicide. One man was eventually wrongfully accused of their murders (never successfully prosecuted) while other suspects remained at large. Kathy, Lisa, Bill and Kristin discuss the identity of the newly discovered killer, and any possible connection this killer has to the murder of Bill's sister Cathy Thomas and her partner Becki Dowski. To hear even more about this case, you go back and listen to Jim, Laura and Lisa deep dive the Shenandoah murders in Nov 2022, ep 401 when they interviewed Kathryn Miles, the extraordinary journalist who covered Lollie and Julie's lives and horrific deaths in her book “Trailed: One woman's quest to solve the Shenandoah murders”.
What does the news the case has been solved mean for Darrell Rice, the suspect the FBI arrested and charged and then dropped the charges against? Laura and Kathryn discuss this along with other potentially linked offences including Alicia Showalter Reynolds murder and ‘The Anne's' who were approached by two men on the trail on June 1 1996 who knew about the double murders at a time when it was only known to the rangers and some FBI agent. Is it possible that Walter “Leo” Jackson Senior was working with another man? Listen and then join the conversation on social media and in the Crime Analyst Squad. Kathryn will join Laura for a Ringleaders Happy on August 14 2024 to dive deeper into the case. At a presser called at short notice by the FBI on June 20 2024, it was revealed that the man who murdered Lollie and Julie on May 24 1996 in the Shenandoah National Park has been identified as Walter ‘Leo' Jackson Snr, a convicted serial rapist. Incredible news, yes, but many questions remain including: what evidence was tested and/or submitted resulting in the DNA hit? Why did it take so long to identify him? How and why was he missed? How many other women has he harmed and/or killed before and after? Listen as Laura and Kathryn break it all down and then join the conversation on social media and in the Crime Analyst Squad. In June of 1996 two women, Julie Williams and Lollie Winans, were found brutally murdered in Shenandoah National Park. Their murderer (or murderers) were never found and the case has remained unsolved, until now. On June 20, 2024 the FBI announced that the assailant has been identified as Walter Leo Jackson Sr. Today we sit down for the second time, with Kathryn Miles, author and investigative journalist who has dedicated years of her life researching this case and uncovering faults in the investigation. While the FBI has closed the case, she unveils in this interview that there are a lot more questions that need to be answered, including the possibility of more victims. This case might be labeled as closed, but in reality, this new information has just opened up a whole new investigation. If you have any information concerning this case, please contact the FBI's Toll-Free tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324). Laura continues her conversation with award winning investigative journalist, author and outdoors expert Kathryn Miles about her re-investigation into the double murder of Lollie Winans and Julie Williams, which is detailed in her book Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. Laura and Kathryn discuss Kara Robinson's abduction and rape by predatory stalker, Richard Marc Evonitz. Evonitz abducted Kara in the blink of an eye, in broad daylight, and no-one knew it had even happened. Evonitz was a prolific serial perpetrator who targeted, stalked, abducted, and raped women. Laura believes Kara's abduction seemed much more an in the moment, opportunistic attack. Kara managed to escape due to her resilience and quick thinking. Laura and Kathryn break down Evonitz's behaviour and the timeline and discuss whether he murdered Lollie and Julie as well as other abductions and murders that might be linked including Alicia Showalter Reynolds, Anne McDaniel, Sofia Silva, Kristin and Kati Lisk and the double murder of Cathy Thomas and Becky Dowski. Content warning: Laura and Kathryn discuss and compare the behaviour of the perpetrator at the crime scenes with what is known about Evonitz's behaviour. This is not an easy listen. Listener discretion is advised. #LollieWinans #JulieWilliams #Trailed #KathyrnMiles #KaraRobinson #AliciaShowalterReynolds #AnneMcDaniel #SofiaSilva #KristinLisk #KatiLisk #CathyThomas #BeckyDowski #SerialKiller #Stalker #RichardEvonitz #CoerciveControl #DASH #DomesticAbuse #TheShenandoahMurders #Virginia #LanguageMatters #CrimeAnalyst #Expert #Analysis #TrueCrime #Podcast #Crime Clips https://www.wusa9.com/article/features/producers-picks/dna-in-fbi-evidence-locker-might-solve-shenandoah-national-park-murders-julie-williams-lollie-winans/65-d4ecdc98-ed85-4626-b242-c35f5d6d938e Kathryn's Book https://www.amazon.com/Trailed-Womans-Quest-Shenandoah-Murders/dp/1616209097 Information about the DASH, Coercive Control and Train the Trainer Masterclasses with Laura https://shoutout.wix.com/so/eeOI-OpnS?languageTag=en Subscribe to Crime Analyst You Tube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCksfRSwfwFqUCjcxKYju6_Q Crime Analyst Merch https://crime-analyst.myshopify.com/ Leave a Review Support Laura's work and Crime Analyst by leaving a 5-star review here: https://www.crime-analyst.com/reviews/new/ Learn more about your ad choices. Laura interviews award winning investigative journalist, author, and outdoor expert Kathryn Miles about her re-investigation into the double murder of Lollie Winans and Julie Williams, which is detailed in her book Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. In May 1996, two skilled backcountry leaders, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams, entered Virginia's Shenandoah National Park for a week-long backcountry camping trip. The free-spirited and remarkable young couple had met and fallen in love the previous summer while working at a world-renowned outdoor program for women. They decided to pitch their tent in a beautiful and remote location close to the river. Lollie and Julie were brutally murdered, and their bodies were discovered in their sleeping bags. Their tent had been slashed open and there was some unusual crime scene behaviour as well as paraphernalia left at the crime scene. Their beloved dog, Taj, was also missing. Trigger warning: Laura and Kathryn discuss the crime scene in graphic detail as it holds a mirror up to the killer. Listener discretion is advised. #LollieWinans #JulieWilliams #Trailed #KathyrnMiles #Misogyny #WomenMatter #TheShenandoahMurders #Virginia #VictimBlaming #LanguageMatters #CrimeAnalyst #Expert #Analysis #TrueCrime #Podcast #Crime Clips https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gCKxiE26_o https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G930dH0VbL8 Kathryn's Book https://www.amazon.com/Trailed-Womans-Quest-Shenandoah-Murders/dp/1616209097 Information about the DASH, Coercive Control and Train the Trainer Masterclasses with Laura https://shoutout.wix.com/so/eeOI-OpnS?languageTag=en Crime Analyst You Tube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCksfRSwfwFqUCjcxKYju6_Q Crime Analyst Merch https://crime-analyst.myshopify.com/ Leave a Review If you want to support my work and Crime Analyst and if you enjoyed this episode, please leave a 5-star review here: https://www.crime-analyst.com/reviews/new/ Learn more about your ad choices. Kathryn Miles, author of "Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders" joins co-hosts Bill Thomas and Kristin Dilley to discuss her new book. Who killed Julie Williams and Lollie Winans in 1996? Why have the FBI and the National Park Service moved so slowly in this investigation? Is this a hate crime? Is there still untested evidence? Are the Shenandoah Murders related to the Colonial Parkway Murders? Kathryn Miles, author of "Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders" joins co-hosts Bill Thomas and Kristin Dilley to discuss her new book. Who killed Julie Williams and Lollie Winans in 1996? Why have the FBI and the National Park Service moved so slowly in this investigation? Is this a hate crime? Is there still untested evidence? Are the Shenandoah Murders related to the Colonial Parkway Murders? We continue our conversation with Kathryn Miles about her book “Trailed: One woman's quest to solve the Shenandoah murders” about the murders of Lollie Winans and Julie Williams in Shenandoah National Park in May of 1996. We start by talking about the FBI's response to the case and how they profiled the possible murderer. We discuss Darrell David Rice who was law enforcement's prime suspect in the case, the lengths they went to find evidence connecting him and if Kathryn agrees based on her research that he should have been the focus at all. #LollieWinans #JulieWilliams #Trailed #KathrynMiles #ShenandoahValley #MurderinNationalParks #WomenAreTargets #Femicide #FBI #FindtheMurderer *************** SUPPORT OUR OTHER SHOWS ***************CRIME ANALYST PODCAST - You're interested in real crime? In May 1996, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams were murdered at their campsite in the popular Shenandoah National Park in the middle of rural Virginia, not far from a busy tourist resort called Skyland. Many people, including park and resort staff, had seen the happy, friendly couple in the area and were alarmed when they were reported missing. As experienced outdoorswomen, Lollie and Julie knew how to take care of themselves and each other. When their bodies were discovered, despite evidence that the women had been brutally tortured and killed, law enforcement decided not alert the public that a murderer could be in the park, and in fact diverted attention away from the crime. This and other shocking facts about the case are revealed in Kathryn Miles new book “Trailed: One woman's quest to solve the Shenandoah murders”. We interview Kathryn about new details that have emerged about possible suspects. Jim and Laura discuss the victimology of Lollie and Julie, two extraordinary women whose families are still left searching for answers about their deaths. #LollieWinans #JulieWilliams #Trailed #KathrynMiles #ShenandoahValley #MurderinNationalParks #WomenAreTargets #Femicide *************** SUPPORT OUR OTHER SHOWS ***************CRIME ANALYST PODCAST - You're interested in real crime? In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by The Netteburg family. Danae and Olen Netteburg, alongside their 5 children- ages ranging from 13 to 1, are currently thru-hiking the CDT. This is their second thru-hike in three years, after the family completed the Appalachian Trail in 2020. The Netteburg's story is one of a kind- both Danae and Olen are missionary doctors who run a 100-bed hospital in rural Chad. We go in-depth learning about how a family of seven manages on a trail as challenging as the CDT, their standout highs and lows from the AT, what life is like back in their home of Chad and the challenges of their work, and much more. The kiddos were also in and out of the studio for this one, so be prepared for the fun chaos that will ensue. We wrap the show with a triple crown of things you put on a cracker, a fan follow up to Kathryn Miles' episode which paints a different picture of one of the suspects, and we opine on the movies most deserving of a sequel. As I wrote a few months ago, with regard to true crime books, "All stories are worth telling well, but especially the difficult ones, when we need the writer's assurance as we walk down the dark passage."As someone who occasionally takes on such stories, I'm interested in how and why other true crime writers approach the work. My lead-off interview is with Kathryn Miles, author of "TRAILED: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders," about the horrific unsolved 1996 murders of two young women with Shenandoah National Park.Miles does what the best true crime writers do. She takes on the awesome responsibility of explaining murder, with compassion and clear-eyes and deeply empathetic reporting. As she writes in TRAILED, "Maybe, just maybe, when two selfless, joyful, beautiful humans die in a place, what's left behind is not the agony of their deaths, but the brilliance of their lives."Miles is the author of Superstorm: Nine Days Inside Hurricane Sandy and Quakeland: On the Road to America's Next Devastating Earthquake, among other books. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by RTIC, we are joined by Kathryn Miles. Kathryn is an award-winning journalist, science writer, and the author of five books, most recently "Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders", which is the focus of today's chat. We go deep on everything to do with this case, including the gruesome details of the murders, why this was not a random act of violence, why this case has yet to be solved, who Kathryn believes to be the perpetrator, and much more. A warning to listeners, this one goes into some pretty horrific details on the subjects of sexual assault and murder. If either of these subjects are especially triggering to you, we encourage you to skip ahead to the segments for this one. We then pivot from rape and murder to the triple crown of ice cream toppings. Typical backpacker radio stuff. Author Kathryn Miles investigates how a serial killer stalked women in the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. Miles uncovers new evidence which suggests that an innocent man is under suspicion, while a suspected serial killer escapes the law. Julie Williams and Lollie Winans were well versed in hiking, camping and wilderness trips. On May 19, 1996 they arrived at Shenadoah National Park with a plan to hike and camp along portions of the Appalachian Trail. Their permit intinerary had them scheduled to leave the park on May 27, 1996. Ony May 31st, Park Rangers were alerted by Julie's father, that the women had not yet returned home and upon their initial investigation, Park Rangers found Julie's car remained where they had parked it back on May 22nd. By all accounts, it appeared the women ever made it out of the park. By June 1st, an official search was underway. This episode was inspired and driven by the research provided in the book Trailed: One Women's Quest To Solve the Shenandoah Murders by Kathryn Miles, where look at just the tip of the ice berg of this case, and all that this amazing book contains.References & Resources:LINK TO PURCHASE: TRAILED: ONE WOMEN'S QUEST TO SOLVE THE SHENANDOAH MURDERS BY KATHRYN MILES:https://www.workman.com/products/trailed/hardbackhttps://www.oxygen.com/videos/innocence-project-represents-man-they-believe-was-wrongly-accused-of-shenandoah-murders#:~:text=Darrell%20Rice%20was%20initially%20indicted%20for%20the%20murders,back%20against%20Rice%20again%2C%20according%20to%20Kathryn%20Miles.https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/2004/02/26/charges-dismissed-in-shenandoah-park-slayings/962f304e-1111-484b-ad9c-46cbad2362da/https://www.fbi.gov/wanted/seeking-info/laura-winanshttps://appalachiantrailhistory.org/exhibits/show/doublemurderinsnp/theoriginalsuspecthttps://www.lcbp.org/https://www.nps.gov/shen/index.htmhttps://appalachiantrail.org/explore/hike-the-a-t/interactive-map/
On this edition of Parallax Views, journalist Kathyrn Miles joins the show to discuss her new true crime book Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. In the spring of May 1996, Julianne “Julie” Williams and Laura “Lollie” Winans went into Shenandoah National Park, part of the Appalachian trail. They were two bright young women in college with a future ahead of them. That future, however, was stolen as both Lollie and Julie were murdered in the woods of Shenandoah Nation Park. Their murder became nationwide news. So much so in fact that when George W. Bush became President of the United States, the Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales of announced that they had found a suspect and that the murder was a hate crime. You see, Lollie and Julie had been in a romantic relationship. As such, their murder could've been a hate crime. The culprit? A man by the name of Darrell David Rice. However, not all is as it seems. Kathyrn Miles takes us through her investigation of the Shenandoah murders explaining the missteps and even, in some cases, malfeasance by the FBI, National Park Service, and the Department of Justice. In doing show she cast doubt on Rice as the perpetrator (note: Rice has not been convicted, even to this day) and offers another suspect. But this isn't just the story of the investigation of the murders. It's also an exploration of what it's like to be a woman, LGBTQ+, or other marginalized identity exploring the frontier of the Appalachian trail and the ways in which that trail is experienced differently by men and women. We discuss all that and more on this edition of Parallax Views.
We talk with Kathryn Miles about her books, Trailed and Superstorm The post Kathryn Miles, TRAILED & SUPERSTORM appeared first on Writer's Voice.
In May of 1996, Lollie Winans and Julie Williams headed to Shenandoah National Park on a backpacking trip. They were two avid outdoor women who were in love and celebrating their relationship, new jobs, and moving in together. Several days into their trip they went missing and eventually park rangers found that they had been brutally murdered. To this day the case has still not been solved and investigations have slowed down, until now. In this episode we speak to investigative journalist Kathryn Miles. Kathryn recently published her newest book, Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. She spent the past several years personally investigating this case discovering police cover ups, negligence in their investigations, lost records, and evidence that was never properly investigated. Today, she tells us about the evidence she has found, the likelihood of this cold case being solved, and how this horrific event has rocked the outdoor community. Book Recommendation : Trailed. Raven speaks with award winning journalist, science writer, and outdoors expert Kathryn Miles about her new book Trailed: One Woman's Journey to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thesirenspodcast/message
This week, I was lucky to have author Kathryn Miles on the show. She has written a great new true crime book; Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders. We have a wide ranging conversation about law enforcement, the keys to this case, and where do thing stands now? If you enjoy a guest who is well researched then this is a must listen. During their final days in the park, they descended the narrow remnants of a trail and pitched their tent in a hidden spot. After the pair didn't return home as planned, park rangers found a scene of horror at their campsite, their tent slashed open, their beloved dog missing, and both women dead in their sleeping bags. The unsolved murders of Winans and Williams continue to haunt all who had encountered them or knew their story. - Workman Publishing Kathryn Miles is represented by the Strothman Literary Agency. When award-winning journalist and outdoors expert Kathryn Miles begins looking into the case, she discovers conflicting evidence, mismatched timelines, and details that just don't add up. With unprecedented access to crucial crime-scene forensics and key witnesses—and with a growing sense of both mission and obsession—she begins to uncover the truth. An innocent man, Miles is convinced, has been under suspicion for decades, while the true culprit is a known serial killer, if only authorities would take a closer look.Intimate, page-turning, and brilliantly reported, Trailed is a love story and a call to justice—and a searching and urgent plea to make wilderness a safe space for women. TRAILED: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders-Kathyrn Miles
Kathryn Miles is the author of “Trailed: One Woman's Quest to Solve the Shenandoah Murders.” The book, published by Algonquin, officially goes on sale on May 3. “Trailed” is about the 1996 murders of Lolly Winans and Julie Williams. The two young women had entered Virginia's Shenandoah National Park to go on a week-long backcountry camping trip. When they didn't return, park rangers began searching and found a scene of horror at the women's campsite. The murders were never solved. Then, in 2016, on the 20th anniversary of the case, the FBI announced they wanted to reinvestigate. That's when Miles thought she had a magazine story on her hands. “As soon as I started working with the FBI on this case, as soon as I was able to access some of the case files from the court case, it was very obvious to me that this case was much more complicated,” Miles said. “That's when I realized that we weren't talking about a 5,000-word piece here. We were talking about a 100,000-word piece.” This is the second time Miles has been on the podcast. She was a guest on Episode 46 in September 2016, discussing her Boston Globe story about a woman got lost and died while hiking the Appalachian Trail. Miles is the author of five books, including “Quakeland: On the Road to America's Next Devastating Earthquake” and “Super Storm: Nine Days Inside Hurricane Sandy.” Her essays and articles have appeared in The New York Times, Outside, the Boston Globe, Politico, and more. She's been anthologized by “Best American Essays” and “Best American Sports Writing.”

Kathryn Miles is an acclaimed journalist and writer-in-residence for Green Mountain College, as well as a faculty member for Chatham University’s MFA program. With a B.A. in Philosophy from St. Louis University and a PhD in English from the University of Delaware, Kate is also a scholar-in-residence for the Maine Humanities Council and a member of the Terrain.org editorial board. Her work has appeared in Best American Essays, Popular Mechanics, Outside, and The New York Times. ABOUT QUAKELAND A journey around the United States in search of the truth about the threat of earthquakes leads to spine-tingling discoveries, unnerving experts, and ultimately the kind of preparations that will actually help guide us through disasters. It’s a road trip full of surprises. Earthquakes. You need to worry about them only if you’re in San Francisco, right? Wrong. We have been making enormous changes to subterranean America, and Mother Earth, as always, has been making some of her own. . . . The consequences for our real estate, our civil engineering, and our communities will be huge because they will include earthquakes most of us do not expect and cannot imagine—at least not without reading Quakeland. Kathryn Miles descends into mines in the Northwest, dissects Mississippi levee engineering studies, uncovers the horrific risks of an earthquake in the Northeast, and interviews the seismologists, structual engineers, and emergency managers around the country who are addressing this ground shaking threat. As Miles relates, the era of human-induced earthquakes began in 1962 in Colorado after millions of gallons of chemical-weapon waste was pumped underground in the Rockies. More than 1,500 quakes over the following seven years resulted. The Department of Energy plans to dump spent nuclear rods in the same way. Evidence of fracking’s seismological impact continues to mount. . . . Humans as well as fault lines built our “quakeland”. What will happen when Memphis, home of FedEx’s 1.5-million-packages-a-day hub, goes offline as a result of an earthquake along the unstable Reelfoot Fault? FEMA has estimated that a modest 7.0 magnitude quake (twenty of these happen per year around the world) along the Wasatch Fault under Salt Lake City would put a $33 billion dent in our economy. When the Fukushima reactor melted down, tens of thousands were displaced. If New York’s Indian Point nuclear power plant blows, ten million people will be displaced. How would that evacuation even begin? Kathryn Miles’ tour of our land is as fascinating and frightening as it is irresistibly compelling. This week, we're revisiting a previous episode, exploring the evolving frontier of extreme weather, and how it's influenced by our warming planet. We'll talk about the largest Atlantic storm system ever recorded with writer Kathryn Miles, author of "Superstorm: Nine Days Inside Hurricane Sandy." And we'll talk about the relationship between climate change and hurricane strength and frequency with Christopher Landsea, Ph.D, Science and Operations Officer at NOAA’s National Hurricane Center.
Join host Michael Harris and guest artist Kathryn Miles as they discuss her art, inspiration and her techniques. Kathryn Miles was born and raised in the Deep South, and she is caught a bit between the Old World and the New. Kathryn has always been creative, a daydreamer, but she started out life as a writer and wound her way backwards and sideways into being a visual artist. “The heart and soul of my art practice is storytelling. I am drawn to myths, legends and the fantastic, all those hidden places in the human soul. I started out as a writer but found that I could reach deeper, farther and faster into the truth of a narrative with color and light.” To read the CAGO Newsletter, visit www.ContemporaryArtGalleryOnline.com and click on the CAGO Media tab. In her new book, SUPERSTORM: Nine Days Inside Hurricane Sandy (Dutton), investigative journalist and graduate professor of environmental studies Kathryn Miles discusses how mounting inadequacies of our national weather service infrastructure may compound the danger to public safety posed by extreme weather events. The Washington Post said the book is “what you might expect from Stephen King if he wrote nonfiction: a gripping plot with flashes of pure terror. Most astonishing, everything Miles describes actually happened.”

As we watch day after day, the government response to a potential Ebola crisis, we are reminded of so many mistakes that various government agencies have made in response to other disasters. It hardly fills us with confidence.Katrina, of course, remains in all our minds. And more recently Superstorm Sandy, exactly two years ago, where municipal response, particularly in N.Y. City, would have embarrassed even the Keystone Cops.Kathryn Miles, in Superstorm: Nine Days Inside Hurricane Sandy, dives deep into Sandy. What she tells us could, if we pay attention, save a lot of lives in the future. My conversation with Kathryn Miles:
