Liminal Gallery Podcast host, Louise Fitzjohn, speaks with contemporary artist Lucy Lyons, to coincide with her solo exhibition ‘Seven and a half' in Liminal Gallery's The Cupboard, in Margate. This exhibition provides a unique realm where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur, offering a glimpse into the intricate workings of the human mind. Between the 7th and 8th floor of the Martin-Flemmer building is a small hidden doorway through which you can enter the mind of John Malkovich. At the back of Liminal Gallery is a small doorway, a different kind of portal through which you can step into the world inside the mind of Lucy Lyons. The Cupboard serves as an intimate space, providing a journey into the depths of Lucy Lyons' creative psyche. Through collage and drawing, Lucy Lyons constructs a rich narrative, drawing inspiration from the surrealist and symbolist movements, Carl Jung's texts and her own subconscious to unearth layers of meaning and symbolism. Her intricate composite drawings, meticulously layered, evoke a sense of immersion and introspection. The Cupboard is Liminal Gallery's second exhibition space, tiny but sleek it is exclusively available to artists living and working in Thanet. Lyons will use this space to showcase a new body of work, evoking an interplay of images, thoughts, and feelings, reflecting the tumultuous times we live in and offering a glimpse into the artist's inner world.Dr. Lucy Lyons is a multidisciplinary artist known for her explorations of memory, identity, and the subconscious through drawing, collage, and installation. She holds a PhD from Sheffield Hallam University, and an MMAA from the Medical Artists' Association of Great Britain. Additionally, she earned an MA in Fine Art from the City & Guilds of London Art School and a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design from Norwich School of Art.She has had solo exhibitions at the Hunterian Museum London, Medical Museion Copenhagen, Fábrica de Braço de Prata Lisbon and Panum Institute Copenhagen. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions and performances internationally, exploring the intersections of art, science, and life. Lyons has undertaken several residencies, including at Latvijas Kultūras akadēmijas teātra māja in Riga, Latvia, and Larose Osler Medical Library A-I-R at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She has contributed to various publications and articles, delving into topics such as art, medicine, and embodiment.Currently, Lucy Lyons serves as the Lead Tutor for SSC Anatomy and Art at UCL Medical School. "Lifestyle Medicine - the new paradigm in Primary Healthcare" In this episode, my guest Dr. Foong Tsin Uin and I talk about Primary Healthcare  particularly Lifestyle Medicine -  a rapidly growing field of medicine that uses evidence-based lifestyle interventions to prevent, treat and manage chronic diseases. If you ask people what Primary Healthcare is, most shrug or respond "direct healthcare?" To be honest, not many people know what it is let alone understood it. Are Singaporeans getting the kind of healthcare we need? Well, in this episode, I am delighted to have Dr. Foong share with us the concept of it and introduce the medical approach of Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Foong is the Director and Chief Medical Officer of Osler Health International. Her team of international doctors have looked after the global community of Singapore for many years. Dr. Foong obtained her medical degree from Royal Free & UCL Medical School in London in 2000. She went to complete her postgraduate training in general practice in London, earning her membership with the Royal College of General Practitioners (UK) in 2006. Later on, she underwent further training and obtained a Diploma in Dermatology from Cardiff University in 2012.Her practice within the international community in Singapore over the last 7 years has seen her practice grow as she delivers a holistic style approach to family practice – in particular looking after children from newborns upwards, and also in the field of mental health. Passionate about providing preventative health for Osler Health patients, Dr. Foong is also a member of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine. Diving into the heart of what it truly means to progress and come together as a society in Singapore. she challenges the conventional wisdom that primary care providers and preventive approaches are always aligned. Dr. Foong introduces Osler Health Services and their uniqueness as a primary care provider. At the core of our discussion is the concept of coaching in healthcare. Dr. Foong illuminates the distinction between a 10 minute and a 45 minute consultation. She introduces us to personalized healthcare right in the first consultation which is one of a kind that makes Osler different. This episode takes you to understanding the importance of one's health and the accessibility of Primary Healthcare as well as the new paradigm - Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Foong advocates self-advocacy in healthcare which means that you are a participant in your own healthcare, working in partnership with doctors, and allied health professionals. Seeing the relationship with your health care team as a partnership helps make you part of decision-making and the management of your diagnosis and treatment. Prepare to be inspired and challenged as Dr. Foong guides us into the path of true healthcare reform. It is a worthy listen! Ahead of the 75th anniversary of the NHS this year, Julia Grace Patterson is publishing a new book, Critical: Why the NHS is being betrayed and how we can fight for it. After years of austerity, a global pandemic, and the looming threats of privatisation, the NHS is bad shape. She writes, “The NHS is an institution. But it's also a political football, kicked back and forth between politicians for the past 75 years. It's a burden to some and a potent vote-winner for others. It's a construct, framed in the media. It's a set of ideas and a logo. It's a workplace for many and the birthplace of almost all of us. It's become a valued part of our society, it is extraordinarily special – and it's being destroyed”.On this episode of It's Bloody Complicated we dug into her journey as a campaigner and what she's planning heading into the next election.Julia is a relentless and extremely effective campaigner and advocate for NHS staff and patients. She is the Founder and Chief Executive of EveryDoctor, a doctor-led campaign organisation fighting for a better NHS. A doctor who qualified from UCL Medical School in 2010, she took a break from her speciality training to set up EveryDoctor, and has now given up her GMC licence to practice, in order to devote herself fully to advocating for NHS staff and patients. She remains a doctor on the GMC register. This episode was recorded live on 27th June, 6pm.Support the showEnjoyed the podcast and want to be a live audience member at our next episode? Today, women make up around half of all doctors and two-thirds of all medical students. So, has equality in health care finally been achieved?  When International Women's Day began in 1909, women were still barred from entering medical school. Today women make up a growing share of the medical workforce and students in the UK. Despite this considerable progress, research indicates that today women in health care are under-represented in leadership roles, are paid less than male colleagues on average, and still all too often encounter sexism and discrimination.  To mark International Women's Day 2023, we invited three female leaders at different stages of their careers in health care to reflect on the expectations, experiences and challenges that have shaped their professional journeys and what needs to happen to continue building a truly inclusive workforce. To discuss, our chief executive Dr Jennifer Dixon is joined by: Dame Jane Dacre, emeritus professor at UCL Medical School, chair of the Health and Social Care Select Committee's expert panel and former president of the Royal College of Physicians Dr Nikita Kanani, director of clinical integration at NHS England and deputy senior responsible officer for the NHS COVID-19 vaccination programme and a GP in south east London Dr Gabrielle Mathews, NHS Assembly Member (NHS England) and a doctor at North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust. Today I speak with Paul Craddock about his new book Spare Parts: The Story of Medicine Through the History of Transplant Surgery. "Paul Craddock's Spare Parts offers an original look at the history of medicine itself through the rich, compelling, and delightfully macabre story of transplant surgery from ancient times to the present day. How did an architect help pioneer blood transfusion in the 1660's? Why did eighteenth-century dentists buy the live teeth of poor children? And what role did a sausage skin and an enamel bath play in making kidney transplants a reality? We think of transplant surgery as one of the medical wonders of the modern world. But transplant surgery is as ancient as the pyramids, with a history more surprising than we might expect. Paul Craddock takes us on a journey - from sixteenth-century skin grafting to contemporary stem cell transplants - uncovering stories of operations performed by unexpected people in unexpected places. Bringing together philosophy, science and cultural history, Spare Parts explores how transplant surgery constantly tested the boundaries between human, animal, and machine, and continues to do so today. Witty, entertaining, and illuminating, Spare Parts shows us that the history - and future - of transplant surgery is tied up with questions about not only who we are, but also what we are, and what we might become." Paul Craddock is Honorary Senior Research Associate in the Division of Surgery and Interventional Sciences at UCL Medical School in London. His PhD explored how transplants have for centuries invited reflection on human identity, a subject on which he has also lectured internationally. Spare Parts is his first book. Starting with WHY is one of the most crucial elements needed for sports, businesses, organisations or for individual approaches to achieve sustainable performance. Pieter Kruger shares the science of WHY, explains how we respond to different levels of pressure and how we apply the WYSIATI principle to filter information in life which in turn impacts our judgment, decision-making, reactions and behaviours. KEY TAKEAWAY “What we see at the moment is that people have significant elevated levels of anxiety mainly as a result of the uncertainty. So uncertainty becomes a fascinating thing because the human mind for evolutionary reasons and for survival hates uncertainty. So as soon as there's uncertainty, we either fill in information ourselves, and this is where we see a lot of conspiracy theories coming from, or we seek reassurance.”   ABOUT PIETER KRUGER Prof Pieter Kruger PhD, CPsychol., AFBPsS is a HCPC and HPCSA consultant performance and clinical psychologist with 19 years’ experience, specialising in elite performance (business and sport), as well as clinical practice.
