Director Samuel Van Grinsven returns to our screens with his sophomore feature film, Went Up the Hill, a powerful drama about an abandoned child, Jack (Dacre Montgomery), attending the wake of a mother he never knew, and encountering her grieving widow, Jill (Vicky Krieps). As Jack and Jill navigate the fractured existence they find themselves in, Elizabeth's spirit emerges in curious and strange ways by possessing each character, resulting in a narrative that flows into the realm of being a possession drama, while never truly immersing itself in the genre expectations that one might have when they hear that this a film with a 'grief driven possession narrative'. Like Samuel's first film, Sequin in a Blue Room, there's an unexpected nature to Went Up the Hill which comes from a foundational level, and is realised in the films sound design, its choice of location - a remote farm in Aotearoa/New Zealand - and the notion that this is a triple hander film delivered by two powerful, impactful performances from Dacre and Vicky. There's an emotional vulnerability to the film that reveals itself as it progresses in a way that feels real and lived-in. How that emotional vulnerability was achieved is what's explored and discussed in the following conversation with Dacre Montgomery, recorded ahead of the films Australian premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival on Saturday 26 October, where Dacre will be in attendance, and Sunday 3 November. In the following interview, Dacre talk about his studies at WAAPA, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, before discussing the tangible aspects of his performance that helped Vicky and himself ground their characters in the moment, while also being able to immerse themselves in the role of Elizabeth as she possesses their characters. Went Up the Hill is another towering achievement of emotional filmmaking from Samuel Van Grinsven, a filmmaker who is defiantly making his mark on global cinema with stories that feel deeply personal, yet completely universal at the same time. You Didn’t Ask with Frankie & Tish

Frankie & Tish had the opportunity to interview Dacre Stoker, the Great Grand Nephew of The Bram Stoker, during his 125 Years of Dracula tour.  He has been traveling with The Menagerie and giving spooktacular lectures regarding the history of Bram as well as discussing his books; Dracul and Dracula the Un-Dead, the prequel and sequel to Bram Stokers Dracula.  The ghouls couldn't wait to pick his brain and find answers to all the questions they never knew to ask! Oddly enough, this episode, and the next, which both include interviews with Dacre, were one of the very few times the duo experienced major technical difficulties.  The episodes had to be salvaged as well as possible and then "Frankensteined" together to make them somewhat complete.  So please forgive the ladies for taking so long to bring it to you.  They hope you enjoy hearing from Dacre Stoker as much as they did!Support the show

A graduate of New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Ian studied creative writing, dramatic arts and acting with intensive character development and script theory under the late great Stella Adler. Seeking more creative control over his work, Ian left acting behind to pursue a career in screenwriting. A Dracula/Bela Lugosi fan since childhood, Ian acquired the rights to and developed a screenplay for the 1972 best-selling non-fiction book, "IN SEARCH OF DRACULA," by Fulbright Scholars Prof. Raymond McNally and Prof. Radu Florescu (Prince Dracula's descendant) that Francis Ford Coppola used to research his 1992 film, Bram Stoker's Dracula. McNally and Florescu became mentors to Ian who toured the country with the professors giving lectures, appearing on news programs and writing scholarly papers on the life of the historic Prince Dracula and the cultural implications and influence of Bram Stoker's novel on western society. Based on his travels with McNally and Florescu, Ian was asked to join The Transylvanian Society Of Dracula and attend their First World Dracula Congress in 1995 in Romania-a gathering of the top history and literature scholars from around the world to discuss the fantastics influence on the arts, specifically horror stories and films. While in Romania Ian spent the night in the ruins of Dracula's Castle in Poenari and traveled to his palace in Tirgoviste where he stood on the balcony of Dracula's Chindia tower. It was from this balcony that Dracula, the great Impaler himself, looked out upon his Forest Of The Impaled-forty-thousand impaled Turkish prisoners. Ian even visited Dracula's birthplace in Sighisoara and his "empty grave" at Snagov Island Monastery. Ian's life changed forever when he was invited by the world's premiere Bram Stoker and Dracula authority, Prof. Elizabeth Miller to speak at DRACULA'97 in Los Angeles-a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the release of Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, "Dracula." It was at this monster mash that Ian delivered his "legendary" paper among Dracula scholars, HOW DRACULA MAY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DISCOVERY OF AMERICA. It was also at Dracula '97 that Ian dreamed up the idea of doing a screenplay sequel to Bram Stoker's immortal novel. From connections made at Dracula '97, Ian, five years later, met Dacre Stoker -Bram's great-grandnephew. Dacre also had dreamed for many years of ideas for a new Dracula story. It was a match made in heaven. Dacre suggested the proper way to go about a sequel and honor Bram would be to not write a screenplay first, but a book. Ian agreed. After years of research and dedication, the result of Ian and Dacre's labors became their first novel, Dracula The Un-Dead. - www.draculathun-dead.com To listen to all our XZBN shows, with our compliments go to: https://www.spreaker.com/user/xzoneradiotv*** AND NOW ***The ‘X' Zone TV Channel on SimulTV - www.simultv.comThe ‘X' Chronicles Newspaper - www.xchroniclesnewpaper.com
