Summer showcase season is officially in the books — and Greg, Ty, and Uly have receipts. This week, the crew digs into the data behind all the hype: which games actually won Summer Game Fest according to Steam wishlist numbers and search trends, and why the top three spots all went to remakes and sequels. Code Veronica taking the #1 wishlist spot gets the full breakdown — Ty explains why the game's weird place in Resident Evil canon is exactly the reason people are losing their minds over it, and the crew goes deep on how RE4 and Code Veronica's release timeline essentially screwed Capcom's own franchise order. Ocarina of Time, Persona 6, Insomniac's Wolverine, Gears of War: E-Day, Kingdom Hearts, and Spyro all get their moment. Then things get real when Greg drops the number: Gears of War: E-Day reportedly cost $400 million to make. The crew breaks down why that figure is almost impossible to recoup — comparing it to Spider-Man 2's $300M budget, which needed 7.2 million copies at full price to break even, against Gears of War II's total lifetime sales of 6.75 million copies ever. Factor in that the game launches Day 1 on Game Pass, Xbox's recent price drop, and that Microsoft is quietly aging out its console ambitions — and this gets uncomfortable fast. Also: a full Resident Evil 6 rehabilitation arc, the correct story order to play RE6 (yes, there is one), a debate on whether RE5 deserves a remake, and the moment Greg admits he's never actually played Until Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, or Heavy Rain — despite knowing every detail about all three. Ty does not take this well.Plus — the 8th anniversary of GZ Chop Shop is coming. July 18th. G Fuel is involved. More details dropping in the newsletter soon.Key Topics:Breakdown of Summer Game Fest's top winners and surprises, including Stellar Blade, Gears of War, and Dawn 2.The cultural significance of franchises like Gears of War and Kingdom Hearts. The impact of search trends and search result data on game popularity.Industry analysis: budget estimates, sales figures, and the feasibility of blockbuster hits like Xbox's $400 million exclusive. The debate over remakes: Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and the longevity of classic titles. The complex timeline of Resident Evil remakes and their impact on franchise storytelling.Technical and strategic industry insights, including counterfeit perceptions and hardware shortages. The role of game subscriptions like Game Pass in the financial landscape.Final thoughts on upcoming releases, the state of the industry, and the importance of community engagement.Subscribe to the GZ Press Play Gaming Newsletter for the full written breakdown every Thursday: gz-press-play-gaming-newsletter.beehiiv.com

Showcase season is done — and this week it delivered. Greg, Ty, and Uly break down everything that mattered across Summer Game Fest and the Xbox Games Showcase 2026.On the list: Persona 6 officially revealed (and it's going darker — finally), Castlevania: Belmont's Curse confirmed as a direct follow-up to the Netflix anime with Rose Belmont as the lead, Resident Evil Veronica and why dropping "Code" from the title is actually a smart move, the surprisingly very real Wolf Among Us 2, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, Monster Hunter Ascendance, Palworld 1.0, Star Trek Shadow Frontier (yes, a horror Trek game), and Metro 2039.On the Xbox side: Persona 6 drops at the showcase, Fable gets a Twilight Princess-level dark glow-up, Gears of War E-Day stays exclusive (and the guys are fine with it), Halo gets a muted reaction, and collector's edition pricing gets a full roast. The State of Play breakdown is exclusive on GZ Chop Shop UNCUT — Patreon only. Also: Greg fumbled the intro badly. Bungie Is Done With Destiny 2: Layoffs, No Destiny 3, and the Future of a Gaming Legend

Bungie just shut down Destiny 2. The final live service update — Monument of Triumph — drops June 9, 2026, and after that, active development is over. All future expansions are canceled. Significant layoffs are coming. And Destiny 3 is not in development. This is the full breakdown. On this episode of GZ Chop Shop, Gregory, Uly, and Ty go deep on the collapse of one of gaming's most ambitious live service games and what it means for Bungie as a studio going forward. This isn't just a news recap — it's the full story. We trace Bungie's journey from a Mac gaming startup in 1991, through the creation of Marathon, the Microsoft acquisition that turned Halo into the Xbox killer app, the split from Microsoft, the Activision publishing deal, and the birth of Destiny in 2014. Then we cover everything that followed: Destiny 2's rocky 2017 launch, the controversial move to free-to-play, the expansion highs and lows, Lightfall's quality miss, the 2023 and 2024 layoff waves, and Sony's $3.6 billion acquisition that has now resulted in a $765 million write-down.We also get into the numbers that tell the real story. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier confirmed the layoffs and confirmed that no Destiny 3 has been greenlit — the Destiny 2 team currently has no next project lined up. Marathon, Bungie's extraction shooter that launched in March 2026 with strong reviews, is sitting at 10,000 to 15,000 concurrent players on Steam. That is not a $3.6 billion studio's numbers, and Season 2 dropping June 2 is a critical reset moment for the game and for Bungie's survival under Sony.Beyond the Bungie story, we pull back to talk about what this really says about the live service model in 2026 — why Destiny 2's failure echoes what happened with Concord, why gamers' patience has shortened, and whether studio acquisitions by major publishers like Sony, Microsoft, and Activision actually improve games or quietly dismantle the creative culture that made those studios worth buying. We look at the Bethesda and Respawn parallels, the FOMO-driven monetization loop that burned out the Destiny community, and what a genuine path forward looks like for Bungie. If you've ever played Destiny, followed Bungie, or just want to understand why one of gaming's best studios is fighting for its identity right now — this one is for you.

The Mullet Man tells the poignant story of an unlikely friendship between an elderly black man, Ulysses, and an 11-year-old white boy, Richie, in the deep South of 1955. Their bond begins with a shared love of fishing but deepens as they navigate societal challenges. Uly uses his wisdom from a lifetime of hard work to guide Richie, who grapples with the complexities of race and friendship amidst societal pressures. As Richie faces backlash for befriending Uly, their relationship becomes a lens for exploring racism and the hope for change. This novella captures a raw slice of Americana, highlighting valuable life lessons and the enduring struggle against racial division. Fields, a former government scientist and businessman, penned his first book at the age of 82, not as a bucket-list item, but with the hope of launching into a meaningful dialogue about racism. Though his book's story is based on his real-life 70-year-old experiences, he believes lessons can be learned today for a new generation. Unfortunately, racism still plagues our society and remains a hot-button subject. NVIDIA GTC has outgrown the label of "tech conference" — it's now the annual convergence point of the entire AI ecosystem, where chips, software, robotics, and autonomous systems share the same floor, with an energy so dense that finding a parking spot takes two hours. In this episode, Silicon Valley-based veteran tech journalist and consultant Michelle Cheng joins host Uly fresh from GTC to give us a firsthand read on what the conference signals for the industry ahead.Michelle traces the deep ties between Jensen Huang and TSMC founder Morris Chang, and how Jensen's visits to Taiwan consistently bring the entire AI supply chain together at what the media has dubbed the "trillion-dollar banquet." Drawing on her experience covering Silicon Valley through the optical networking era, she maps today's AI infrastructure boom against the longer arc of industry cycles — demand never disappears, it just takes time to mature. She captures the mood of GTC with a drink called "Innovation Cocktail" she picked up at an after party: a blend of excitement and anticipation that defines where Silicon Valley stands right now.The episode closes on Jensen's own framing from the keynote — intelligence is becoming infrastructure — and Michelle's clear-eyed take: the window into the AI ecosystem is open, and the companies that find their position early tend to benefit the most when the cycle matures.NVIDIA GTC

VC Talks: Shao-Yu Jheng (Harvard) | Why Reindustrialization Won't Work Without Global Supply Networks As reshoring and industrial policy return to the center of U.S. economic strategy, supply chains are increasingly framed as matters of national security and sovereignty. But history tells a more complicated story. In this episode of VC Talks, Uly revisits Left for Dead, a 1997 study on the revival of U.S. electronics, to question whether bringing manufacturing back home was ever the true driver of America's industrial recovery. Joined by Shao-Yu Jheng, a postdoctoral researcher in Economics at Harvard University, the conversation reframes the 1980s–90s comeback as a story of network leadership rather than national production. The episode examines why the Japanese manufacturing model ran into structural limits, how Taiwan and overseas Chinese (OC) production networks enabled coordination at scale, and why control over global supply networks—rather than factory location alone—proved decisive. Looking ahead, the discussion challenges today's reshoring debate by asking what industrial policy can realistically change, and where its influence fundamentally ends.

In this episode, Uly examines five defining technology signals emerging from Taiwan in 2025—and explains why they matter far beyond local headlines. Rather than viewing Taiwan solely as a semiconductor manufacturing center, this conversation reframes it as a critical capability hub shaping how artificial intelligence systems scale, deploy, and sustain over the next decade. The discussion covers TSMC's USD 100 billion expansion in the United States, NVIDIA's decision to establish its major R&D headquarters in Taipei, and AMD's continued expansion of its R&D footprint in Taiwan. Uly also breaks down the strategic implications of Taiwan's AI Basic Law, as well as the accelerating commercialization of silicon photonics and co-packaged optics (CPO) by leading Taiwanese technology companies. Together, these developments point to a deeper shift: AI's future growth is increasingly constrained not by models alone, but by infrastructure, hardware integration, regulation, and long-term system design. This episode offers investors, founders, and technology leaders a clearer framework for understanding why Taiwan plays a central role in the global AI roadmap—and why the AI era cannot scale without it.

Beneath the imposing surface of his tattoo-covered frame and “Monster” alter-ego, seemingly forged through chaos and back-alley brawls, Ulysses Diaz is a man who has been shaped by failures and redemptions much more than rage. If you judged Diaz solely by his intimidating appearance and troubled past, you'd miss the journey of a survivalist who wrote his own blueprint for discipline and an unforeseen ascent in combat sports. Diaz laced up the gloves—not with dreams of belts or boxing fame, but simply as a way to stay in shape and clear his head. Needless to say, what started as a workout quickly became the best decision of his life. With coaches who didn't just train him but always checked in, held him accountable, and understood the roads he had traveled, the gym became his anchor. Uplifted by his support system and a renewed purpose, Diaz got back in the ring, after once dabbling as an amateur earlier in life, and managed to revolutionize his life through fighting.Since the moment he embarked on a professional combat sports journey in 2017, Diaz knew he'd found his second chance. Not a way out, nor some golden ticket to stardom. Instead, it was the way forward. Diaz aggressively chased any and all opportunities across boxing and MMA, also later jumping at the opportunity to take the gloves back off and make a name for himself through the growing interest of bare-knuckle promotions like BKFC and BKB. Even recently, Diaz stepped into a custom-rules bout with “Platinum” Mike Perry's Dirty Boxing, always looking for the next challenge and never one to shy away from some of the most brutal stipulations left in the sanctioned world of combat.Ulysses is also an actor who has played key roles in hit movies like Den Of Thieves, The Weapon, and Never Too Late. He is very close friends with the Super Star Artist 'Pitbull' aka Mr World Wide and was blessed to travel the world and visit many countries, while working as his personal security. But nothing has meant more to Uly than his youngest son, Junior. Even though Uly has faced some of the toughest challenges any man can experience, his most difficult battle was finding out his son was diagnosed with cancer via a bone disease. This podcast was filled with amazing stories of overcoming hardships, comical tales of travel adventures, tear jerking admissions of a fathers deepest fears, and so much more.
