When Sonnie Trotter first tried climbing at age 15, he knew he'd found the path he was meant to follow. Now, 30 years later, he's looking back on a life spent pushing himself and the sport, chasing adventures in wild places. His new memoir, Uplifted, includes stories that span his climbing career, including his legendary first free ascent of the 5.14 trad testpiece Cobra Crack, climbs with friends Tommy Caldwell, Chris Sharma and Alex Honnold, and reflections on risk as a husband and father. One of the strongest and most positive climbers of our time, Sonnie manages to hold even his gnarliest experiences lightly and his writing offers hard-earned wisdom with the personal and friendly delivery of tales told around the campfire. As you look back over the past year or so, maybe you've faced trials like never before! It can leave us wondering, what's going on, or what is God up to! How is it possible to experience joy in the midst of it all? The book of James has some answers. God wants to produce perseverance, patience and even joy in us. She wasn't lazy. She wasn't unmotivated. She was a high-achieving, deeply self-aware woman…...who couldn't stop “shoulding” herself. Work out harder. Eat better. Do more. And when she couldn't meet those impossible standards? Shame. Self-criticism. And the urge to fix herself even harder. But the truth is: This wasn't about discipline. It was a trauma response.
God gives us lots of great instruction and insights for how we should live our lives on a day to day basis but sometimes we need perspective. God does that better than anyone. James gives us examples of this everywhere and what we're discussing today on Light on the Hill is no exception. Prepare to be uplifted! How Positive Leadership Transforms Workplace Culture and Elevates Customer Experience Shep interviews Ryan Minton, Best-Selling Author and Keynote Speaker. He talks about his new book, Uplifted and shares insights from his experience in hospitality, including the impact of employee engagement, appreciation, and empowerment in creating uplifting work environments and better customer experiences. This episode of Amazing Business Radio with Shep Hyken answers the following questions and more: What practical benefits come from creating an uplifting workplace culture? How does a hospitality mindset improve customer service across different industries? What impact does leadership have on employee morale and customer experience? How does positive leadership help reduce staff turnover in customer-facing roles? In what ways does an employee's mood affect customer interactions? Top Takeaways: The hospitality mentality is not just for hotels and restaurants. It is valuable in every industry because it sets the bar for the customer experience standard. It teaches every employee to always show care, gratitude, and kindness no matter what industry they work in. A heartfelt "thanks for coming in today" can make a real difference in someone's mood and attitude. It is a simple yet powerful statement that leaders can say to make their employees know that they matter. When employees feel appreciated, they're more likely to enjoy coming to work and give their best. It creates a workplace where people want to come, stay, and grow. Every employee becomes the face of your brand the moment they interact with your customers. When they are not happy at their jobs, customers feel it. High turnover and unhappiness can hurt customer satisfaction, so making sure that employees are engaged, equipped, and fulfilled helps create positive customer experiences. Strict policies can sometimes get in the way of the human aspect of customer service. When employees are trusted to handle situations as they see fit, they feel empowered to do their jobs. Employees need to grow through training and be equipped with the right tools so that they can use policies as guidelines while exercising common sense to meet each customer's unique needs. Happy employees lead to happy customers, and happy customers come back. Invest in people through appreciation, empowerment, and uplifting leadership. Loyalty programs and perks can encourage repeat business, but truly memorable companies don't rely on them alone. Being helpful, friendly, and uplifting is the best loyalty program you can offer. When people feel good about you, they'll keep coming back, with or without loyalty programs. Plus, Ryan shares the "balloon effect" and how it can elevate customer and employee experiences. Tune in! Quote: "Good old-fashioned customer service is just good old-fashioned hospitality. So many brands look to the hotel industry because it has become the standard for customer service." About: Ryan Minton is a Best-Selling Author and Keynote Speaker with over 20 years of experience leading world-class hospitality brands. He is the author of Thanks for Coming in Today: Creating a Culture Where Employees Thrive & Customer Service is Alive. His upcoming book Uplifted! The Remarkable Power of Positive Leadership on Frontline Teams launches June 10th. We've talked about what the eight limbs of yoga are and where they came from (if you missed that episode just scroll a few back) but what is each limb's practical, energetic, and spiritual significance in modern life? From the ethical and personal observances of Yama and Niyama, respectively, to the physical aspects of Asana, the breath control of Pranayama, and the mental focus of Dharana. And of course how it all culminates in the exploration of Dhyana and Samadhi. The Eight Limbs are here to help you cut through the noise and come back to what really matters, this episode will explain how. Listen and learn:

Sonnie Trotter is a world-renowned rock climber, father, husband, writer, and the author of the new book "Uplifted: The Evolution of a Climbing Life." For the past three decades, Sonnie has built a career as one of the most accomplished climbers of his generation— pushing standards, putting up first ascents, and bringing a sense of creativity, humility, and grit to every project he tackles. His new book is part memoir, part meditation on movement and meaning, and it's one of the most thoughtful and grounded climbing books I've read in a long time. In this wide-ranging conversation, Sonnie and I talk about the unexpected ways writing has shaped his life, how his approach to climbing has evolved over the years, and what it's been like to move from living out of a van to raising a family in the mountains of Canada. We also discuss how he's stayed grounded throughout his career, his relationship with sponsors like Patagonia, and why gratitude— not rage or ego— has been the driving force behind his decades of commitment to climbing. Sonnie also opens up about how parenting has shifted his perspective on adventure, freedom, and ambition—and how he and his wife are raising their kids in a way that emphasizes curiosity, effort, and joy. Whether you're a climber, a writer, a parent, or just someone trying to live a meaningful life, there's a ton of wisdom in this one. Sonnie's new book "Uplifted" is out now, and I highly recommend picking up a copy—you'll find a link in the episode notes, along with links to everything else we discussed. You know that feeling when you finish a strategy session or a call with a client and you're absolutely BUZZING? You feel energised. Uplifted. Lit up. And you just know you've helped that client? THAT is the magic that occurs when you work with the RIGHT clients. The ones who value your work, take action, and bring out the ‘Genius Zone' in you. Today, I'm talking with marketing and messaging strategist Michelle Falzon (& my cohost of the Content Sells Podcast) about how you can attract the clients who are meant for you and your business – and how to STOP casting your net too wide. Here's What You'll Discover in This Episode: -> How to speak directly to your ideal clients so they instantly feel like you're the one for them, even when everyone is vying for their attention. -> The REAL reason broad, generic messaging is never worth it – and how you can stand out of the crowd to bring in the right people. -> Why trying to be “all things to all people” is just diluting your value, keeping you stuck, and draining your time and energy. -> How to STOP worrying about ‘repelling' people when you narrow your focus, and why exclusivity is not a negative trait for your business (even if you feel “guilty”) -> The subtle ways your OFFER impacts who you're drawing in and who says YES to you – and why listing your product features is never enough -> What to do when you fear you're “leaving people behind” as you narrow your target audience, and why that's actually a sign you're on the right track. -> The ONE sign that your messaging is too broad, plus the shift that can help you hit the bullseye of clients. -> The invisible factors that are keeping your best-fit clients just out of your reach, and how to remove them from your business -> Why finding alignment in what you do and who you do it for, is the KEY to not only having a successful business… but a life you LOVE waking up to each day. -> And, get your invitation to Michelle and I's upcoming training for women who want to exclusively work with their IDEAL clients.
