Latest figures show fraudsters stole almost €100m through frauds and scams in 2023

Fraudsters stole almost €100 million (€98.6m) through frauds and scams in 2023, an increase of over 16% (16.4%) on 2022, according to a new report published today by FraudSMART, the fraud awareness initiative led by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI). The Payment Fraud Report, based on data from FraudSMART members, reveals that card fraud accounted for 95% of fraudulent transactions and 36% (€35.2 million) of gross fraud losses in 2023. Card usage by consumers and businesses rose significantly overall, with the Central Bank of Ireland (CBI) reporting a 28.8% increase in debit and credit card payments in 2023. In contrast, fraudulent card payments increased by 8.2%, according to FraudSMART data. The report also notes that other types of fraud had lower volumes but higher average losses. Unauthorised electronic transfers accounted for only 3% of the volume but 34% (€33.8 million) of losses. This type of fraud occurs when someone makes a payment through mobile or online banking without the account holder's authorisation or permission, often called 'account takeover'. It usually results from the loss or theft of sensitive payment data such as a victim's account number or PIN. Additionally, the report shows that consumers and businesses were scammed out of €18.1 million through authorised push payment (APP fraud). This occurs when a fraudster tricks a consumer into sending money directly to an account controlled by the criminal, for example, through an investment or romance scam. While APP Fraud makes up just 1% of fraudulent transactions and 18% of losses, it represents a significant increase compared to 2022 in both volume and value terms (42.5% and 82.2%, respectively). On foot of today's report and the dominance of card fraud highlighted, FraudSMART is today issuing a warning to holidaymakers to be extra vigilant over the summer period at home and abroad when they may be using their debit or credit cards more frequently for booking travel or accommodation, as well as other holiday-related purchases, and is calling on consumers to familiarise themselves of the simple steps they can take to prevent falling victim to fraud. Speaking about the latest figures and the importance of being alert this summer, Niamh Davenport, Head of Financial Crime, BPFI, said: "As many people look forward to the summer holidays ahead, today's figures are a timely reminder to be on alert for credit and debit card fraud. We can all be at risk of being enticed by 'unbelievable' holiday deals and letting down our guard when out of our regular routines and environments. While it is important to recognise that cards remain one of the safest forms of payment, as they come with extensive fraud protections and offer many conveniences, especially when planning holidays and travelling, fraudsters are increasingly targeting consumers using complex and deceptive methods." "FraudSMART is urging holidaymakers to take extra caution when booking travel, accommodation and other holiday-related purchases such as eating out. Watch out for copycat websites offering holiday accommodation and packages which closely mimic a legitimate site or well-known company brand but may have subtle differences in the website name and often have spelling errors. These sites aim to steal your card details and personal information for fraudulent activities. Also, be alert for fake emails and social media ads offering holiday deals which appear to be offering bargain prices but are, in reality, too good to be true. When paying in person, never let your card out of sight, such as at a restaurant, and don't share or write down your card PIN. If you think you have fallen victim to fraud, report it to your bank and the Gardaí immediately." Top FraudSMART tips and checks for protecting your card details this summer: Book through reputable sources; always use trusted and well-known booking websites or travel agents. Be cautious of unsolicited emails or social media ads offering cheap...

In a written Dáil response to Scariff TD Michael McNamara, Minister for State Patrick O'Donovan confirmed signage has been erected at the site as "a last resort" to deter such events. In this edition of In The Ring, I analyse Prince Mashele's responses in interviews granted to eNCA, 702 and the SABC, in light of media reports that he had, ok the face of it, been dishonest about the nature of his biography of Herman Mashaba. Herman Mashaba is leader of politica  part  ActionSA, and prior to that was always known as a very successful businessman in an against-all-odds tale at the height of apartheid; in recent years he a new career pivot that had also seen him becoming mayor of Johannesburg.Mashele, a well-known South African political analyst, had claimed that he had "self-funded" his book on Mashaba, and the subtitle of the book declared it to be "unauthorised".It has emerged that Mashaba had provided funding for the book, and had engaged the author on drafts of the chapter. This raises sharp ethical questions: was the work unauthorised or authtoised ? Did Mashele lie on eNCA? Did Mashele WRONGLY withheld the information from Jonathan Ball ? What, most importantly, are the consequences for the professional integrity of the author? And what are we to make of the other actors in this drama: the subject; the publisher; the researcher/former best friend Brutus Malada who 'blew the whistle'?Have a listen to my uhm unauthorised take.

It has become a cemetery.” wrote one journalist in the wake of the mega earthquake that rocked Turkey on February 6 killing nearly 50,000 people, many of them buried beneath the rubble of poorly built apartment blocks. A further two earthquakes destroyed even more buildings weakened by the previous quake. In the midst of this natural disaster, Twitter and Tik Tok (the main modes of communication) were blocked. Survivors are pointing fingers at the Erdogan government which allowed the dodgy dwellings to go up. In return, the state is detaining people who post about it on their social media accounts.

Unauthorised public gatherings are illegal in Cuba and protests are rare. But this week the island nation has witnessed its biggest demonstrations in decades. People took to the streets calling for an end to President Miguel Díaz-Canel's government. They blamed him for food and medicine shortages, price hikes and the government's handling of the Covid-19 pandemic. Mr Díaz-Canel described the demonstrators as 'counter-revolutionaries' and blamed the United States and its economic sanctions - in place in various forms since 1962 - for both the protests and Cuba's wider problems. So how big of a challenge do these demonstrations pose to Cuba's Communist government? Fidel Castro ruled for decades and was succeeded by his brother Raúl. How did their departure from the political stage change attitudes in the country and did it make protests more likely? And what is the Biden administration likely to do now? Ritula Shah is joined by a panel of experts to discuss Cuba at a crossroads.

Banned by some of the early Church Fathers as false or heretical, the unauthorised, apocryphal gospels continue to exercise a hold on the popular imagination through novels, new translations and through numerous conspiracy theories. Roy Jenkins investigates some of the many surviving texts that didn't make it into the accepted canon of the New Testament, and asks what if anything they can tell us about Jesus and his followers. Centuries before Dan Brown and The Da Vinci Code, some elements of the apocryphal gospels have entered mainstream Christianity, and even into The Koran. Roy's guests include New Testament scholars Professor Simon Gathercole and Emeritus Professor Keith Elliott, historian Martyn Whittock, archaeologist Stephanie Boonstra, and Father John Browne, priest of the Catholic parish of St Joachim and St Anne in Dunvant, Swansea.

You can also say thanks by buying me a coffee.   About the book The unauthorized story of lululemon. This is a book about ordinary people who took an opportunity to be creative, to be innovative, and to maximize their potential. Chip Wilson's part in this story comes from the learnings of thousands of mistakes. He set the culture, business model, quality platform, people development program and then got out of the way. Lululemon's exponential growth, culture, and brand strength has few peers and it is because of those who employees who choose to be great. This book is also about missed opportunity - five years of missed opportunity. Chip was playing to win, while the directors of the company he founded were playing not to lose. About the author Chip Wilson is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, loving husband and a father to five boys. As the founder of Westbeach and yoga-inspired clothing company lululemon athletica, Chip is a globally recognized innovator in the field of technical apparel. He is widely credited with starting the "athleisure" retail category, now a $100-billion-a year global business. At lululemon, Chip was known for his people-before-product leadership approach. He surrounded himself with like-minded individuals; creative, driven, athletic locals with a love for work-life balance inspired by the West Coast. This cohesive culture fueled the innovation and growth of the brand. In 2007, lululemon athletica was taken public and Chip remains its largest individual shareholder and biggest cheerleader. Source: amazon.com   Big idea #1 - See into the future A recurring strength of Chip’s was his ability to spot a trend a few years off. And not just a spot, a trend, but to do something about it. From the move towards baggy shorts for skateboarders, the move to snowboarding from skiing, and the attraction of a different audience with different aesthetic wants, through to a huge movement of yoga and mindfulness, and more technical active wear (or ‘athleisure’ wear) for women. He also saw where those trends were coming from largely from California, so he built connections there, first by supplying those brands into Canada and by by spending time there to better observe and get a feel for what was happening in the particular scenes and subcultures. He was then able to bring these into Canada, knowing that it was only really a matter of time until those trends started to move up north. This ability to see trends in advance, allowed Chip to get ready, get ahead, think deeply, and try things out in the meantime. You can see this in his ‘slow build’ approach – he started slow, particularly with Lululemon, really taking the time to build himself into the community of the demographic that he was looking to attract. By going to yoga himself, spending more time with yogis, and finding out what it was that they wanted and really putting them at the heart of the business and the products. When he had his Westbeach brand and was designing the snowboarding technical apparel, he again, was spending time with the people in that scene to understand them. This was central to his ability to see into the future, hearing what they would want and being able to then extrapolate that into a business.   [PS. Want more book goodness straight to your inbox every fortnight? Subscribe to the bookmark here]   Big idea #2 – Be different on purpose Almost everything about Chip’s businesses had strong purpose, and this made it very clear who it was for (almost to a cult-like effect in Lululemon) and also who it wasn't for. His principles and purpose were clear even early on at Westbeach, he would stop people coming into the store who were smoking. In the eighties, this was quite a big deal because everyone was smoking at the time, but he knew it was not a habit he wanted his brand associated with so wouldn't let people who were smoking into his store. This strength of purpose was also behind the genesis of the bags, the famous Lululemon store bags with their manifesto written all over them. These bags themselves became quite a cult item, and people would use them to take that lunch in or use in their everyday lives, not just to carry their Lululemon goods home from the shop. The words / mantras printed on the bags resonated with the ‘super girl’ market that Lululemon was designed for, showing how much the values of the brand resonated. Purpose also came to life in their technical attire, with an intense focus on quality and details. Women's active wear was a pretty sorry offering in the 90s/00s. Nasty see-through leggings made of cotton, not particularly sweat-proof, and probably a baggy t-shirt, which wasn’t always the most practical for activities like yoga. Typically, men's sportswear had a lot more on offer with a lot more technical elements, and generally was much more fit for purpose. By focusing on their demographics and knowing that there was a better way, meant they could offer something that hadn’t been seen before. And finally, in the business itself there were differences. They offered yoga in the Lululemeon stores, you didn't see Nike or Adidas doing something similar. They also used an education model in the stores for assistants; they weren't called shop assistants / sales assistants, they were called educators, they had a huge amount of autonomy. The store managers had control over the window dressing, store layout, events, and local yoga/wellbeing community engagement. The vertical business model and owning their own manufacturing were unheard of in the industry at that point, but they did it, which allowed them to keep both control and ultimately more margin, because they weren't giving money away to suppliers or third parties. Interestingly, it was a lot of these purpose-led elements of the business and culture that really slipped as private equity took ownership of the business after the IPO. Lululemon were no longer allowed to be as controversial or bold in their ad campaigns, the quality slipped as the focus turned to profit and preservation rather than quality and innovation.   Big idea #3 – Fail, learn, repeat Chip is pretty open in the book about his failures, there's actually whole specific sections dedicated to the various failings and learnings that he had, in particular around the IPO process and experience. And also lessons from Kit and Ace, the business he started with his family after Lululemon. Many of these lessons are around structure and governance. There's a few themes, largely around control and structure, which recur throughout the book. There's also great examples in the book of fail, learn, repeat in the constant innovation and improvement in their thinking. They were taking the offcuts of the pants and turning them into the headbands and other little accessories that you can also buy in Lululemon. Chip was constantly asking himself ‘if I was to compete against Lululemon, what would I do?’ and looking around at the competition, to see where the opportunities to do something different were. Chip was very focused on personal development, and an ongoing quest to avoiding mediocrity. He was allergic to the idea of living an average life, or doing an ‘ok’ job, and he really wanted to avoid that slipping into the company. He put everyone through the Landmark course (which is somewhat controversial in itself) which certainly at the time was a huge investment to put all of his management team through it. But it allowed them to have a common language and common expectation of the level which Lululemon operated on. Again, this is something that changed after the IPO. Chip describes this as the difference between the wanting to win, and wanting not to lose, mentality. When Chip was running the business it was very much around being the best and going out and doing things differently, being a bit controversial at times, in order to make a mark. Whereas the private equity management wanted more of a preservation state. ‘The PR machine’ controlled what could and couldn’t be said (eg Chip’s views on Coke or Pepsi) and they played not to lose; playing it safe rather than doing the things that led to Lululemon's success in the first place, and why they appealed to the people that they did.   Let’s connect LinkedIn Instagram See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The father fled East Prussia to escape the 1880s pogroms and, as a penniless immigrant boy, hawked newspapers on the streets of Chicago. The son, who lives on Philadelphia's Main Line and on a palatial California estate, is a multibillionaire and America's most generous living philanthropist. Legacy is an epic saga of how Moses and Walter Annenberg built a vast publishing empire and one of the nation's greatest family fortunes. Seeping through the century, the story encompasses brutal circulation wars, bookie parlours and racetracks, a lethal presidential vendetta, the glory days of Hollywood and of television, diplomatic drawing rooms, White House intrigues, tangled romances, a tragic suicide, extravagant social climbing, the Royal Family, a fabled art collection and astonishing generosity. Unauthorised but written with unprecedented access to the Annenberg family and their private papers, Legacy is at once a moving story of a family's triumph, a rich cultural history and an irresistible reading experience.

Oliver Taplin (Former Fellow and Tutor of Classics at Magdalen College, University of Oxford) discusses Hughes's fertile and unapologetic engagement with the literature of Ancient Greece and Rome, and his direct and fruitful engagement with the theatre. As I find that Car TB's are so small and not easily spotted I thought that using the tax disc may help people notice them. The GCDocs Doctor Who Geocache project hit its target and then some, on Kickstarter.  With a goal of $200, so far the project has exceeded that by raising $341.  This is going to be an amazing Geocache. 2 worlds of GEEKERY combine... DOCTOR WHO and GEOCACHING! Plans for an out of this world geocache hidden inside a 6 foot Tardis! BananaSource was on this weeks GeoSnippits Reboot Podcast - Halloween Geocaching Ideas Feedback.. From Moan-A-Lot In answer to your question, it's not what I wear it's just i posses a strange ability to attract **** ***** you think the logs you read were bad try looking at my log for GC4J85W GC4J85W - Somercotes Miners Memorial by Alfreton Divers OMG what a find this turned out to be, has to rank as 1 of my most memorable finds, EVIL EVIL EVIL my 3rd time at looking but I must admit to not logging DNF'S as they've been 5 min looks on the way home from work, but that's just the beginning of the tale! Arrived at GZ shortly after 6am for another quick search before home, I eventually stumbled across the cache this time with bleary eyes and a sleep deprived brain yay! Got in to it signed the log ML to save space, but then dropped half the bugger on the ground so a new search began for that, but it was a little dark still and clever me remembered I had a torch in the car so off I went to fetch it, I knew this was going to be a hands and knees job! So there I was on all 4s when I heard a voice behind me "every thing ok sir" oops I was bang to rights, yup it was the police, old bill or what ever else you want to call them. So a lengthy explanation was called for, phone app was shown so was the log and half a cache, I got 1 of those funny looks non caches give you and on there merry way they went, by this stage I felt I had to give up my search so on returning home emailed the owners who have since found the missing piece :-) now people say hi vis vests make excellent urban camo, mmmmmmmmmm this time I think it may have given the game away! Thanks for a truly memorable experience and for that reason alone I'm awarding this cache a favourite point. From DuneBuddy I think Amy told you to pack a lunch when the Brits invade Texas because you can't buy Marmite there. So, here's our new tactic. We send in the Marmite first.  It's a divide and conquer strategy.  Once they're so confused by it they are fighting amongst themselves, in we swoop. Nemesis Geocaches.. From Redbeard4570 My nemesis cache! GC31BMK. Hays, Kansas, USA. Here is my found posting. It says it best. Well, well, well. Was my face red. I've looked for this one a total of 4 times. With a total of 4 extra sets of eyes. Over a years time. So that fact alone is good reason to be red faced. But add in the fact that I have a hide using the SAME CONTAINER, well, that's red face X4!!! LOL!!! Finally, success and another number in my found list! T4T$ SL :) I'm sure every cacher has a nemesis cache. Just getting them to admit it is the trick! We discover a tool that may help you with DNF's.  We all know that DNF's are caused by someone blocking your GPSr device.  What we all need is a GPS Jamming Detector (from gpstracklog.com) The creation and development of the Signal Sentry 1000 was prompted by the prevalence and accessibility of GPS spoofing devices via the internet and other sources. Such devices can be acquired for relatively low-costs, increasing the risks associated with signal disruption and corruption. Dumb Things Geocachers Do.. Expect others to go at their pace.  Log slow or fast, why get frustrated by people who don't do it the way you do? FTF hounds who claim it because there wasn't an online log, or expect others to have logged their find immediately to save them the journey. Ask Doctor D.. From: The Monkey King Are cache reviewers always the right people to review caches? Should caches be reviewed? Travelbug Race.. Our Oh Beep! Unauthorised deductions by unscrupulous companies have become a major problem for South African consumers. Speak Out is often flooded with complaints involving illegal debits. Two months ago we broadcast the story of Mosupulogo Koka from Moletji in Limpopo who shared his story about a company known as Student Forum which is operating under a business known as Corporate People. They had been deducting R185 from his bank account without his permission since 2008 and attempts to resolve the matter with them had failed.
