Welcome back to a brand new episode of the Woodpreneur Podcast, today we are pleased to welcome Cameron Porter of Cammie's Garage! Cammie's garage started back in 2017 when Cameron and his wife bought their home. Previous to that Cameron had graduated from the University of South Carolina with an art degree, and had a 20 year career in the animation business before he started doing woodwork. Cameron considers himself an artist primarily and it just so happens that wood is his preferred medium at the moment. Camerons wife saw that he really enjoyed woodworking and he himself had realized there was a passion for it when he was doing his art degree. So when they bought their house, one of the reasons behind their choice was that there was a two and a half car garage Cameron could turn into a workshop. Preferred Equipment and Pieces Cameron makes mostly unique art pieces with the lathe as his primary tool. He also will occasionally do commissions. People ask him to do certain things and he considers himself very lucky to be able to create unique art pieces to be enjoyed by art lovers. When Cameron first started, he was using reclaimed material. Really just stuff that he would find in the neighborhood. His neighbors would be doing renovation projects to their homes and Cameron would literally get wood out of the dumpsters. If someone was having a tree cut down in his neighborhood, they'd leave logs by the street and Cameron would pick up a log here and there and use the greenwood. Now he purchases lumber from a local sawmill. Cameron notes that he's also gotten many scraps from friends, and local woodworkers. Cameron is really concerned about the environment, and his wife is a climate scientist, so those are the types of things that are on his mind when he uses reclaimed material. Cameron hates to generate waste, and likes to keep things out of the landfill if possible. To see more from Cammie's garage check out the links below! Cameron Stone (LkIn: Cameron Stone) moved to Hobart 2 years ago to follow his partner who had relocated for work. An opportunity came up to complete a PhD at the University of Tasmania focusing on protected cropping in cherries. Prior to moving to the Apple Isle, Cameron was an agronomist in the Yarra Valley for a few years working with a range of growers from orchardists, vineyard managers, vegetable producers and cut flower farmers. He completed the majority of his tertiary education at the University of Melbourne (Bachelor in Environmental Science, Masters in Ag Science) as well as a Graduate Diploma of Education (Secondary school teaching) at La Trobe University. He found my way into the Ag/Hort industry after 18 months living overseas teaching in London. When Cameron returned, he enrolled in the Ag Science masters degree. There has always been a connection to the industry through his dad who has worked in research and development for a major agricultural company for over 45 years. Danielle from Auburn has asked for help with her boyfriend Cameron after what she says was a disastrous Thanksgiving dinner with his family. She says after dinner, in the kitchen, as they were cleaning up the Turkey, Cameron’s father actually grabbed her butt and said “I wanna get up in those giblets.” She says, yes, the Turkey was right there, but it was clear the dad was talking about HER giblets, not the Turkey’s. No one else saw this, and she says when she told Cameron later he said she was over-reacting. When Cameron comes on he says his dad is just a butt-grabber, like baseball players, and he does it to everyone in the family, it’s no big deal. But Danielle feels very clear about that the dad wanted from her, and Cameron digs himself in a hole when he says the dad has no reason to hit on Danielle because the dad’s new wife – Cameron’s stepmom – is “hot”. Is Cameron fixing to be Dad 2.0? Should Danielle work it out or tell him to get stuffed?
Meetings! How can we say no to more of them and, the ones that we do need to have, make it the most effective meeting of them all? Today’s guest has some insights! By the time Cameron Herold was 35, he had built two $100 million companies. He was the second in command of 1-800-Got-Junk?, a company he built from $2 million in revenue to $106 million in under six years. Today, he is known as the CEO whisperer and is the catalyst behind hundreds of companies’ exponential growth. Whenever Cameron walks into a mastermind event or conference, he always walks in with three action items: three people he wants to meet that he doesn't know yet, three people that he knows and wants to spend more time people, and three things he’s working on in his business that he wants to ask people about. Why are meetings so bad? Chances are, you’re really bad at running meetings. You need to put a conscious effort into training people on how to best conduct a meeting and tweaking it as you go. When Cameron first put a daily huddle in place in his company, so many people complained. However, he knows the daily huddle works, it just needed to be fine-tuned based on your culture. When it comes to recurring meetings, lock them into every employees’ calendar right away. There should be no reason why you’re scrambling to find a time that suits everyone week after week. If you’re not willing to put the top priority company meetings into everybody’s calendar, then get used to staying at 7% growth. Take one big to-do and go deep with it until it starts working. Don’t try to boil the whole ocean and incorporate daily huddles, quarterly plannings, and other strategic meetings all at once. You’ll really upset a whole lot of your employees if so! Cameron Dueck grew up in a Mennonite family on a remote turkey farm in the Canadian Prairies. His journalism career took off in Chicago, where he wrote about American agriculture while learning to sail on Lake Michigan during the weekends. He moved on to New York City, where he further whetted his appetite for the open sea and international news. He next joined Reuters as a correspondent in Singapore, where the idea of foreign ports and strange seas really took hold. When Cameron quit that job he jumped aboard a yacht to sail from Thailand to the Mediterranean, dodging pirates off the coast of Yemen and braving dust storms on the Red Sea. He earned a Royal Yachting Association Offshore Yachtmaster qualification before setting off across the Atlantic Ocean. He soon returned to daily journalism, joining the South China Morning Post and then the Financial Times in Hong Kong.

The Dogs By Allan StrattonA new house, a new town, a new school. Cameron has done it all before, multiple times. In fact, he’s getting so tired of the same old story, that he’s beginning to question whether his mom is making things up. Maybe his dad wasn’t quite as bad as she remembers. Maybe if Cameron did contact him, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. After all, he hasn’t talked to him or seen him in years. The latest move has put Cameron and his mom in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. And not only that, but the house they move into is strange. When Cameron starts seeing a boy, he wonders if something is going on with him. Recommended for grades 7 and up.

http://www.alainguillot.com/cameron-huddleston/ Cameron Huddleston is an award-winning journalist with more than 17 years of experience writing about personal finance. Her work has appeared in Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Business Insider, Chicago Tribune, Fortune, Huffington Post, Money, MSN, USA Today and many more print and online publications. At this moment she is the Life + Money columnist for GOBankingRates. In the interview Schools don't teach personal finance to young students. People have to figure it out as they go along. There is a taboo around the topic of money. Friends don't like to talk about money and many many parents don't like to talk about money with their children. People buy status symbols to give the impression that they have lots of money. Wealthy people, au contraire, don't like to display that they have lots of money. The Book: Mom and Dad, We Need to Talk 10 years ago, Cameron's mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. They had never spoken about her finances. When Cameron found out about her mother's disease, the first step was to get a power of attorney, giving her permission to run her mother's financial affairs. At this point, Cameron was the sole decision-maker. She would have loved to consult some of those important decisions with her mother. Some of Cameron's friends were going through similar issues and they were asking questions. It was at this moment that Cameron felt compelled to write a book, to help others who are going or who will be going through similar difficulties. The consequences of not having a conversation with your parents can be lengthy, expensive, and painful. Imagine the family members having heated arguments about how to take care of the parents? Whether to end their lives or prolong it? What kind of burial to have? who would they split their assets? How about if there are kids from different marriages? How much is it going to cost?

Cameron Hedrick wasn’t always on the path to being a chief learning officer. His career has taken twists and turns and includes stints as a stock broker and in sales and marketing roles. He even took a swing at being an entrepreneur and running his own company before settling into senior HR roles at New York-based financial giant Citi. It's not all business either. When Cameron first moved to New York City after college he earned money playing trumpet in jazz combos around town. And despite the many years between his time as a working musician and now, when he leads Citi’s learning and development organization, Cameron has never forgotten the lessons he learned from his time in the jazz clubs of New York. The ability to create something new and original on the fly as an ensemble is an experience that continues to inform his work in developing talent. In this podcast recorded live on stage at the City Winery in New York City, we talk to Cameron about the improvisational nature of organizational learning, the need to help others constantly evolve so they don’t become obsolete and how chief learning officers need to champion behavior change as much if not more than they emphasize transferring knowledge across the organization. Everyone in business is will need to conduct a meeting at some point. When that time comes, you want to do it well, right? Ari and Nick's guest on this episode is Cameron Herold, author of “Meetings Suck.” He's on the show to talk specifically about how to conduct meetings in a way that makes them beneficial to everyone involved. In fact, Cameron says that you want to conduct your meetings in a way that people are actually eager to come. How can that happen? You can find out on this episode. ## Do you know how to conduct a meeting for your team well? When Cameron Herold first came up with the idea for his book, “Meetings Suck” he was chatting with one of his peers who was bemoaning the meetings he had to conduct. When Cameron asked him if he'd ever been taught how to conduct an effective meeting, his friend said, “No.” That was the starting point and the book is the result. “Meetings Suck” serves as a primer on what meetings are for, how they should be planned, the best format and structure for meetings, and ground rules for participation. You'll find Cameron's insights into effective meetings very helpful, so be sure you listen. ## Do your meetings suck or do you suck at running meetings? Most meetings drag on and on simply because the person conducting the meeting doesn't know what they are doing. They wrongly believe that they are supposed to let everyone voice their opinion, allow for comments about everything, and be careful not to hurt anyone's feelings. Cameron Herold says that's the best way to frustrate everyone in the company and make attendance at meetings as much fun a root canal. You can hear some actionable, practical tips from Cameron about running effective meetings, on this episode. ## “Sorry, I'm late” means, “I'm selfish and don't value your time.” ~ Cameron Herold Every company or team needs to have ground rules for their meetings - and they need to be widely and clearly communicated. One of the most important ground rules is that you don't show up late. Cameron Herold says that showing up late says, “I am selfish and I don't value the time of the other people who are attending this meeting.” If you'll take the time to hear what Cameron has to say about team culture as it pertains to meetings, you'll discover some of the missing pieces that can make your meetings more effective and enjoyable for your team. ## How to best conduct meetings for remote teams. It's more and more common for companies (like the Leverage Team, for example) to work remotely all across the globe. That makes in-person meetings an impossibility most of the time. So what are some good alternatives and how should they be used most effectively? On this episode of The Leverage Podcast, Ari and Nick chat with Cameron Herold about meetings for remote teams and find out that most of the principles that should be applied to in-person meetings are even more important when it comes to video or phone meetings for remote teams. You'll want to hear this one. ## Outline of This Episode - [0:03] Introduction of Cameron Herold, COO of 1-800-Got-Junk. - [0.14] How Cameron came to write “Meetings Suck.” - [2:12] How rigid should you be with scheduling of meetings? - [3:53] Cameron's basic meeting template and goals. - [6:26] When is asynchronous video communication OK to replace meetings? - [8:30] The primary purpose of meetings has to be meeting-specific. - [9:42] How do Cameron's principles about meetings apply to remote teams? - [12:30] Using meetings well is about using people, time, and money well. - [13:25] Tips for building team culture on a remote team. - [15:50] Cameron's top 3 tips to be more effective. ## Resources Mentioned - [www.CameronHerold.com](http://www.CameronHerold.com) - [www.1800GotJunk.com](http://www.1800GotJunk.com) - [The COO Alliance](http://www.cooalliance.com/) - BOOK: [Double, Double](https://www.amazon.com/Double-Your-Revenue-Profit-Years/dp/1608320995) - BOOK: [Meetings Suck](https --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lessdoing/message
