There's a version of success that looks great on a highlight reel and completely hollows you out from the inside. I've seen it. I've felt it. And in this episode, I sat down with a man who lived it hard, nearly paid for it with his life, and came out the other side with a completely different playbook. In this episode of The Happy Hustle Podcast, I get to rock the mic with Cameron Herold, one of the most legendary operators in the entrepreneurial world. Cameron is the founder of the COO Alliance and the man known globally as the CEO Whisperer. He's the former COO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK, where he helped engineer the company's growth from 2 million dollars to 106 million dollars in revenue in just six years. He's a six-time bestselling author, an international speaker, and a guy who's been to 80 countries across all seven continents with his wife, living out their bucket list in real time. Cameron is the real deal, and this conversation goes deep. If you're a CEO, founder, or entrepreneur who's ever felt like you're the bottleneck in your own business, this episode is for you. If you've been grinding yourself into the ground and wondering why the life you're building doesn't feel as good as it looks from the outside, this one's for you too. Cameron doesn't sugarcoat a thing. He shares his burnout story with raw honesty, walks through the systems that have helped hundreds of companies scale with soul, and drops frameworks that you can use right now to grow your people, protect your time, and build a company that actually supports the life you want. One of the biggest things Cameron and I dig into is the COO relationship and why getting it wrong can absolutely derail your company. He breaks it down like a marriage. You have to understand yourself first, know what you're great at, know what drains you, and then find someone who fills in the gaps without trying to compete with your strengths. The COO is meant to be the brakes to your gas, not the parking brake. They're the leash on the dragon, not the choke chain. And finding that person starts with clarity about who you are and what you're actually building. That leads directly into Cameron's concept called the Vivid Vision, and this one is a game changer. Most entrepreneurs think they have a vision. Cameron would tell you most of them have a sentence, not a vision. A true Vivid Vision is a four or five page document that describes every area of your company, your culture, your team, your sales, your operations, as if it's already come true three years from now. It's not about the how. It's about painting the picture so clearly that your entire leadership team can reverse engineer the path to get there. Think of it like building a home. You know what you want it to look like. You describe it in enough detail. The right people build it for you. Cameron also goes hard on why most companies are starving their people of real leadership training, and what that actually costs you. Not conference trips. Not SOPs. Real skills. Interviewing, hiring, running meetings, managing conflict, coaching your team, goal setting. These are the core executive skills that almost nobody ever gets formally trained in, and it's why so many smart people in business are struggling with things that should be simple. As Cameron puts it, business is really easy if you have the core skills to get results through people. If you don't, it's a grind that never ends. And then there's the stuff that got personal. Cameron was 35 years old when his body and mind were clinically redlining. He was drinking daily, smoking, carrying extra weight, buried under a crushing amount of life stress, and he had no idea how bad it was until a doctor put a number on it. He scored 435 points on a stress assessment where 250 meant a 95 percent chance of a heart attack. He was written up in the Wall Street Journal as one of four entrepreneurs whose careers flamed out from burnout. He walked out the other side of that with a hard reset, no alcohol for three years now, daily weigh-ins, consistent movement, and a bucket list lifestyle that he and his wife have been living for five years straight. The lesson? The lie of just catching up this weekend is not about catching up. It's about avoiding your life. If you're ready to build a real second in command, stop running terrible meetings, train your people like you mean it, and finally step into the freedom you actually started this thing for, go listen to the full episode right now at https://caryjack.com/podcastin/. Your team might be working hard and still drifting apart, not because they do not care, but because the destination is fuzzy. I dig into a leadership problem I see everywhere: a clear vision in the leader's head that never fully transfers to the team. When that happens, people row in different directions, execution slows down, and culture gets noisy. We explore the Vivid Vision approach from Cameron Herold and why a story-based vision document creates real alignment. Then I walk through Google NotebookLM, a free AI tool that helps you pull together the best sources you already trust such as YouTube videos, documents, slides, web pages, and more. The key is that NotebookLM can answer questions using only your selected materials and even provides citations, which makes it a strong fit for leadership communication, strategic planning, and internal training. The fun part is how fast it produces usable assets: briefing documents, study guides, FAQs, timelines, mind maps, plus audio and video overviews that feel like an explainer. That means your SOPs, HR policies, onboarding notes, and “state of the union” messages can become clear, watchable content in minutes instead of weeks. If you want to scale clarity across your organization, this is a practical way to do it with AI, without losing your voice.Subscribe for more ways to make AI simple, share this with a leader who needs clearer alignment, and leave a review so more teams can find it.Support the show

I've read somewhere around 300-400 business and self-development books. I highlight them, take notes, and build systems out of them. I'm like a productivity nerd with a real estate habit. But most of those books, while good, didn't actually change what I do on a Monday morning. These three did.In this episode, I break down the exact 3-book stack that took me from grinding 60-hour weeks with no direction to building a real estate portfolio worth over a billion dollars. And more importantly, I give you the system for actually applying them so you can do more in the next 6 months than most people do in 10 years. The three books are Vivid Vision by Cameron Harold, The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan, and Traction by Gino Wickman. Each one solves a specific reason people fail at big goals. Stack them together, and it's a completely different game.Try the free AI vision tool mentioned in the episode: firstdeal.com/visiontool

Cameron Herold is the mastermind behind the exponential growth of hundreds of companies worldwide and is often called the CEO Whisperer. He's the founder of the COO Alliance and the Invest In Your Leaders training program, and the former COO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, where he helped scale revenue from 2 million to 106 million in just six years. He's also the author of several influential business books, including Vivid Vision and Free PR, and hosts The Second in Command podcast. On this episode we talk about: How Cameron's first “business” at seven years old collecting and reselling coat hangers sparked a lifelong entrepreneurial journey. Why entrepreneurial thinking (spotting opportunities, selling, leading, problem-solving) matters for every kid—even if they never start a company. How to practically “raise entrepreneurs” by letting kids run real mini-businesses without helicopter parenting. The difference between being an entrepreneur and being entrepreneurial, and why not everyone is wired to be a founder (and that's okay). Cameron's Vivid Vision framework, why most mission statements fail, and how to actually get your team aligned around the future. How founders can regain clarity when their original vision no longer fits, and where to turn when you feel “stuck” strategically. Why real relationship-building beats old-school “networking,” and how to put yourself in the right rooms with the right people. How to think about media and podcasts using the “digital trifecta” so every interview or feature keeps paying dividends for years. Top 3 Takeaways Raising entrepreneurial kids is less about forcing them to start companies and more about giving them reps in leadership, sales, negotiation, problem-solving, and time management—without rescuing them every time they struggle. A Vivid Vision is a detailed 3–5 page description of what your company looks, feels, and acts like three years in the future, and your job as a founder is to communicate that picture clearly and repeatedly so others can help build it. Media appearances (press, podcasts, features) only matter if you actively repurpose, promote, and reshare them; the long-term leverage comes from what you do with each “log on the fire,” not from the hit itself. Notable Quotes “We don't need to raise our kids to be entrepreneurs, but we do need to raise them to be entrepreneurial.” “The Vivid Vision is a four- or five-page description of what every part of your company looks like, acts like, and feels like three years from now.” “It's not about what podcast you're on; it's what you do with that podcast afterwards.” Connect with Cameron Herold: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/coo-alliance/ Twitter/X: https://x.com/CameronHerold Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/cameron_herold_cooalliance Other: Website – https://cameronherold.com (includes links to books, COO Alliance, Invest In Your Leaders, and his Second in Command podcast) Learn more about your ad choices. If you don't have an executive assistant, you are one. The path of least resistance is to delegate and grow your people. Employees will listen to an outside expert more than they'll listen to you. You'll always run a small business if you keep saying, I'm the only one who can do this. Key Takeaways ● Clarity of vision powers growth — Crafting a detailed “Vivid Vision” rallies teams and unlocks strategic direction. ● Charge like a premium brand — Raising your prices and positioning as the top tier creates margin for excellence and talent. ● Build a culture people want to join — Treat culture as a magnet for employees and customers, not just an internal perk. ● Free PR is your untapped megaphone — Pitching unique, repeatable story angles gets you noticed without a massive budget. ● Invest in your leaders to multiply results — Scaling happens when you consistently develop your managers and delegate with intention. Ben Backus, Chief Science Officer, and James Blaha, CEO and Founder of Vivid Vision, discuss their work addressing binocular dysfunctions and improving visual field testing. Their innovative visual test uses a consumer-grade VR headset to deliver a gamified, less stressful, more engaging experience for patients, encouraging longer, more frequent testing. This approach also improves dataset precision and overcomes barriers in clinical trials for new therapeutics for diseases such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, potentially accelerating the development of vision-saving treatments. Ben explains, "Vivid Vision addresses two conditions. One of them is binocular dysfunctions, which include conditions like amblyopia, strabismus, and convergence insufficiency. And the other one that we're really focusing strongly on now is visual field testing, which is especially important to use for monitoring people who have glaucoma. It also gets used for screening tests for glaucoma, and it's an especially important part of getting new therapeutics approved for any medication that is going to try to preserve your sight. That includes macular degeneration, a particular flavor of macular degeneration, degeneration called geographic atrophy, inherited retinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and stroke. It's the visual field test that we are putting the majority of our effort into, but we still also treat binocular dysfunction." James elaborates, "I originally got started, I guess, because I grew up with some binocular vision disorders. I had a lazy eye and a crossed eye, also known as strabismus and amblyopia. And I had kind of the traditional experience as a kid where I was not cooperative with the treatments, wearing my eye patch, and doing eye exercises, and that sort of thing. And I wasn't successfully treated as a kid. About 60% of the time, that's the case in the US, where kids are not successfully treated for conditions. Then, when I was older, in my mid-twenties, I got interested in this topic through a TED talk by a neuroscientist, Sue Barry. That ultimately caused me to make the first prototypes, and I was able to gain 3D vision depth perception from some of those first prototypes. And that's ultimately what caused us to start the company." #VividVision #VRHealthcare #EyeHealth #MedicalTechnology #DigitalHealth #VisionTesting #Innovation #Glaucoma #MacularDegeneration #Amblyopia #HealthTech #VirtualReality #PatientCare #EarlyDetection #ClinicalTrials seevividly.com Download the transcript here
