How do you remake a classic? Well in the case of trying to bring back the LEGENDARY Private Detective John Shaft of the 1971 Gordon Parks cult hit starring Richard Roundtree, acclaimed director John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood, Poetic Justice) teamed with acclaimed writer Richard Writer (The Color of Money, Clockers) to....NOT remake it, they decided to "re-imagine" the character as a former NYPD cop trying to exact justice in late '90's New York City. Oscar-nominee Samuel L. Jackson now plays the titular character with Roundtree returning to play his uncle. This time around, Shaft is determined to bring justice for the racially-charged murder of an innocent young man at a NYC club. The murderer is played by Oscar-winner Christian Bale (The Fighter), the witness whom Shaft has to find is played by Oscar-nominee Toni Colette (The Sixth Sense).....and beyond that, Shaft also has to combat corrupt local cops PLUS local drug kingpin Peoples Hernandez played by Oscar-nominee Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction). Throw in some high-octane action, Busta Rhymes as Shaft's driver, AND....the iconic Oscar-winning theme song from Isaac Hayes and what do you get? Besides several Oscar nominees, you happen to get a surprisingly enjoyable (and very timely) action thriller to kick off Black History Month. Can you dig it? :) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene GershonSend us a texthttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
Guardatelo.
In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of this classic from director David Fincher, it's IMAX showing & its release on 4K, I'm doing a retro review of “Se7en.' Brad Pitt plays Detective David Mills, who moves to a crime-ridden city with his wife, and is paired up with retiring detective William Somerset, played by Morgan Freeman. Thanks to a serial killer that appears to be preaching and forcing attrition on his victims concerning the Seven Deadly Sins, there will be no easing into the job for Detective Mills. Everything in this city is grimy, nasty and dark and so is what this killer is doing to teach seven peopkle a “lesson.” It'll take Somerset's temperance, wisdom and patience, along with Mills' drive, energy and passion to bring this killer down, if the killer doesn't take them, or a loved one, out first. This is the first of three films that Brad Pitt and David Fincher made together and it also made Fincher a top tier director. “Se7en” also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, R. Lee Ermey, Richard Roundtree, Reg E. Cathey, Peter Crombie, Hawthorne James, Richard Schiff and Kevin Spacey. What's a George Kennedy-themed podcast without a DISASTER? On this episode of George Kennedy is My Co-Pilot California is hit by the BIG ONE in 1974's EARTHQUAKE where an all-star cast (including Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, Richard Roundtree, Lorne Greene, Geneviève Bujold and - of course - George Kennedy) have to deal with the after-effects of a massive tremor that destroys most of California. Of course, before the quake hits there's plenty of melodrama and complex relationships (script by Mario Puzo!), but once the earth starts to move things get properly apocalyptic. Our EARTHQUAKE talk is preceded by a short chat about a late-era episode of the television sitcom WINGS featuring George playing a put-upon version of himself! ENJOY! The post Episode 242 – George Kennedy is My Copilot – Earthquake (1974) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

Sup, nerds. This week, your two favorite nerds(in very different ways) Chris and Neil talk two new movies. First, atfter the intro , they talk a fun little indie film starring June Squibb, Richard Roundtree and Parker Posey in Thelma. Then, after the news they talk Neil's most anticpiated movie of the year(or maybe ever?)- Deadpool & Wolverine. The give their thoughts and then after their rating they give a fair warning to duck out before Neils lay down the easter eggs and spoliers. A grandma is scammed out of $10,000, and decides to take matters into her own hands to get it back. Ashley & Matt review the new movie Thelma in this episode.
This week, we don't step behind the mic to be an audio driver... we do it because we're driven, as we go under the hood with the Wachowski sisters' much-maligned avant garde anticapitalist art film (for kids!), the 2008 anime adaptation Speed Racer, written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, and starring Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci, John Goodman, Susan Sarandon, Matthew Fox, Roger Allam, Hiroyuki Sanada, Benno Fürmann and Richard Roundtree. Turned loose on kid-friendly fare after R-rated successes, the Wachowskis served up a visionary piece of art about what it means to be an artist, and the struggle to create under capitalism. A box office flop upon its release, it's gained a cult following in the years since, and count Justin as a Day 1 believer as he saw it twice in IMAX and all of its technicolor splendor has likely been imprinted on his eyelids ever since. It's a contentious pick to close out Masterpiece Month, a nomination for canon consideration so audacious that it just may test the limits of the very friendship undergirding this podcast. But fret not! Beyond hearing a nerdy boy yap about his nerdy interest for an impossibly long time, we also mark the midway point of the year by revealing our Top 5 films of 2024 thus far. If you'd like to watch Speed Racer before listening to this episode, it is sadly unavailable to stream in both the US and Canada at the time of publication. But you should see it. It's great. (Can you guess which one of us writes this stuff?) Other works discussed in this episode include Twisters, Civil War, Hit Man, Late Night with the Devil, Longlegs, Devil, Love Lies Bleeding, Dune: Part Two, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Challengers, Speed, Midnight Run, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, Lisa Frankenstein, National Treasure, Pirates of the Caribbean, Pirates of the Caribbean II: Dead Man's Chest, The Matrix, V For Vendetta, Pacific Rim, Cars, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Yellowjackets, Nope, Alita: Battle Angel, and Gran Turismo, among countless others. We'll be back next week to kick off another themeless month of madness on the show, as we're following Masterpiece Month by purposefully steering the ship directly into an iceberg and watching the movie that killed Hayden Christensen's leading man career. Yes, it's another box office dud from the summer of 2008: Doug Liman's Jumper, which sadly just like Speed Racer is not currently available to stream. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
Our ongoing quest to watch all of the only existing season of Spike TV's BLADE: The Series (starring Sticky Fingaz from Onyx) marches on. Financial scams are an unfortunate phenomenon, but what happens when a fraudster messes with the wrong grandma? The very fun action-comedy Thelma imagines exactly this scenario. The movie stars June Squibb as a woman scammed by someone pretending to be her grandson. She then enlists her old friend (the late Richard Roundtree) to help get her money back.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Thelma Unleashed: June Squibb and Richard Roundtree's Epic Final Ride – A Tale of Grit, Humor, and Defiance at 93, Interview with “Thelma” writer-director Josh Margolin The Not Old Better Show Interview Series Welcome to a special episode of the Not Old Better Show, sponsored by MDHearing and Prolon. where we dive into the poignant action-comedy film that is taking audiences by storm: "Thelma." This feature film directorial debut from our guest today Josh Margolin and showcases the incredible talents of veteran Oscar® nominee June Squibb, in her first leading role, and the legendary Richard Roundtree, in his final performance. "Thelma" is not just a film; it's a celebration of resilience, humor, and the unyielding spirit of the elderly. Thelma opens world wide on June 21 In "Thelma," June Squibb brings to life a feisty 93-year-old grandmother, Thelma Post, who finds herself the victim of a phone scammer pretending to be her grandson, played by Fred Hechinger from "The White Lotus." Refusing to be seen as helpless, Thelma embarks on a treacherous quest across Los Angeles to reclaim her stolen $10,000. Her journey is hilariously action-packed and heartwarming, as she enlists the help of her old friend Ben, portrayed by the iconic Richard Roundtree. Together, they navigate the city on a motorized scooter, facing obstacles that would challenge even the likes of Ethan Hunt from "Mission: Impossible." This film, inspired by a real-life incident involving Margolin's own grandmother, cleverly adapts action tropes to highlight the strength and agency of its elderly protagonist. Margolin's script resonates with infectious humor and a touching narrative, earning rave reviews at this year's Sundance Film Festival for its fresh take on familiar genres and its sensitive portrayal of aging. June Squibb's portrayal of Thelma is nothing short of remarkable. Known for her early career as a dancer and singer, Squibb embraced the physicality of the role, performing most of her own stunts—including high-speed scooter chases and rolling across beds with a gun in hand—all while channeling the fierce determination of her character. Her connection to Thelma's sense of justice is deeply personal, shaped by her lifelong ethos of right and wrong, and her late husband's belief that she could have made an excellent cop. The chemistry between Squibb and Roundtree is palpable, bringing to life a story filled with laughter, grit, and a profound sense of companionship. Margolin's casting choice was driven by Squibb's perfect blend of strength and vulnerability, humor and understatement—qualities that mirror his own grandmother's indomitable spirit. As we explore this extraordinary film, we also ponder the possibilities of a sequel. After all, every great action hero deserves a franchise. Join us as we delve into the making of "Thelma," the remarkable performances of its cast, and the inspiring messages it conveys about aging with dignity and determination.
June Squibb was born an actor, and had a rich career on stage for years before becoming an on-screen performer in her sixties. It's not your typical trajectory, sure, but then neither is being 94 and carrying your first feature film – which, by the way, is an action comedy. With her new movie THELMA new in theaters this weekend, the singular June Squibb joins us to talk about how the role of Kate in Andrew Payne's NEBRASKA – for which she won an Oscar – reflected her life and shaped her career. Then, Jordan has one quick thing about the 2020s updates to her Vulture ‘Best Queer Horror Movies' List.***With Jordan Crucchiola and June Squibb
