Marie Antoinette is known for her style, love of fashion and jewelry and in the end what led to her demise. One woman is behind her look more than anyone else including those amazing hair styles. Rose Bertin had a knack for style that drew the attention of a very devoted following that went back to her early days. Born July 2, 1747 in Abbeville, she moved to Paris and started working at the Trait Galant boutique at just 16 years old. Owner Mademoiselle Pagalle dressed the ladies in the court of Louis XV, and the young assistant was much in demand. It was more about the adornings on the dress then the dress itself. Lace, feathers, jewels and ribbons creating a one of a kind dress that allowed the ladies to stand out at court. On May 11, 1774 the day after Louis XV died and Marie Antoinette became queen of France, Rose was introduced to the young queen by her customer, the Duchess of Chartres. In no time at all, Rose was meeting with the queen twice a week to talk about what she wanted and even designing the very tall hairstyles. Rose refused to follow trends, instead, she actually set them. When Marie wanted a casual dress to wear at the Trianon and the Hamlet, Rose designed a loose white muslin dress that Vigee Le Brun captured on the canvas. While it shocked many that the queen was depicted in such a casual way it became the must-have look in Paris. Working with the queen until her final moments she created the simple dress she wore to the guillotine and then promptly left France. As the very public image of the queen's excess, her destiny would end much like her famed client if she hadn't. Spending those years in Belgium and London before returning to Paris in 1795.In 1770 she opened La Grand Mogol, eventually moving it to 26 Rue de Richelieu where it remained until she returned to Paris.  In the early 1800's she finally closed it after her customers weren't returning to her like they had before. On September 21, 1813 she died in Epinay-sur-Seine at 66 years old. Rose was the first celebrity fashion designer, created the first fashion magazine thanks to the urging of the Queen and created the mystique of Marie Antoinette that remains today. More info and photos: https://www.claudinehemingway.com/paris-history-avec-a-hemingway-podcast-1Support Claudine on Patreon and get more of Paris and all her stories and benefits like discounts on her tours, custom history and exclusive content  https://www.patreon.com/bleublonderougefacebook https://www.facebook.com/BleuBlondeRougeInstagram https://www.instagram.com/claudinebleublonderouge/Join us every Sunday for a LIVE walk through Paris filled with history https://www.claudinehemingway.com/eventsSign up for the weekly Blue Blonde Rouge newsletter  https://view.flodesk.com/pages/5e8f6d73375c490028be6a76 Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/join/Laviecreative)

If you’re a feminist like me, you’re reeling from the news of liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg passing away on Friday. This episode with Marie Cecile Anderson and Katy Frame, Reformed Whores, will be a balm to your soul.If Dolly Parton & Flight of the Conchords got drunk and had a baby, you'd get the hilariously irreverent musical comedy duo Reformed Whores! They’re on a mission to empower, normalize the female experience, and bust a few guts in the process! Not only do they have beautiful harmonies and a country twang, but they also are hilarious as well as educational. They are cohosts of the Difficult Women podcast, which is a fantastic combination of current affairs, feminism, social justice, and funny, irreverent conversation—plus a lovely blend of women’s friendship. The first time I saw Reformed Whores was in 2012, after Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a slut and a prostitute, merely for advocating for contraception. Their song, “Rush Limbaugh Calls Sandra Fluke a Slut,” will have you singing along, “I’m a slut, slut, slut, I’m an S-L-U-T, S-L-U-T, slut!” I immediately became a fan and have followed their irreverent, bawdy, harmonious form of comedy and music ever since. Fate brought Marie and Katy together when they “fell ass backwards” into forming Reformed Whores. Ten years ago they randomly met at a mutual friend’s birthday party in Brooklyn when they talked the whole evening. And they started the band one week later! Working together for 10 years, they consider themselves as soulmates. That’s evident when you listen to them together in this podcast episode, onstage, in their videos, or on their podcast. Marie was trying to prove to her overprotective father that she could be a full woman without having a boyfriend or be horny like a man, pushing against the stereotype of what a southern woman is supposed to look like. She never fit into the category of a typical southern woman, even though she didn’t realize she was actually a feminist until about 10-15 years ago. Now she’s very proud to call herself a feminist. When they started a bawdy band singing about sex and body positivity, they had to adjust to upsetting their parents. It’s been hard for their parents to hear their daughters talk about sex in such a brazen, open way. When Marie’s mom first saw one of her videos, about giving hand jobs for Lent, her mom told her she was disappointed in her. However, Marie also shared a story about her parents coming to see Reformed Whores in concert. When they sang their song “Mama,” Marie’s mom proudly claimed the title of Mama.We talked about straddling traditional country venues and feminist, sex-positive messaging; their favorite songs; the future of theater; performing in Sturgis, SD; their podcast and important conversations; working in the male-dominated fields of comedy and music; being labeled as "difficult women"; the new Netflix movie "Cutie"; Storm Large; The Guilty Feminist; and Black Lives Matter.

Senior Nutrition (HAPF SERIES) with Marie Gualtieri, PhD and Liz Albertine “For older adults in 2018, which is the most recent data that we have, approximately 5.3 million Americans, 60 and older, were food insecure.”— Marie Gualtieri, PhD (03:47-03:58) COVID-19 has elevated a lot of issues that impact older adults. So, we're going to dig into the details of the impact of aging and food insecurity. In this week's episode, I'm joined by Health and Aging Policy Fellow, Marie Gualtieri, PhD and her Discussant, Liz Albertine, Legislative Director for Representative Rosa L. DeLauro (D-CT-03). Part One of ‘Senior Nutrition (HAPF SERIES) with Marie Gualtieri, PhD’ Marie Gualtieri is a sociologist making sure vulnerable populations have the nutrition support they need. She has worked with communities and engaged with policy to increase food access and support to improve people's health outcomes across the lifespan. For the past decade, Marie has partnered with community-based organizations, health providers, and foundations, listening to the experiences and stories of food insecurity, food access, and nutrition among children, families, and older adults. And, for older adults, she learned that they face unique challenges when accessing food. Marie’s joy is to take people's lived experiences, stories of food insecurity, and translate that into meaningful change. Marie has accomplished these changes through her work in policy, research, program evaluation, and securing additional grant funding for organizations to expand their capacity.  More recently, in her Health and Aging Policy Fellowship on Capitol Hill, Liz Albertine indicated that Marie was able to help advise Rep. DeLauro (CT-03) and her staff on nutrition issues across the lifespan. This work included introducing bipartisan legislation to expand nutrition support for families and working on the various emergency spending packages for COVID-19, focusing on senior nutrition and food assistance programs. Marie is committed to creating meaningful strides in addressing the hunger and food crises in the national and global sphere.  Liz Albertine was promoted to Legislative Director role back in January 2018. Albertine graduated from the University of Virginia in 2008, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. She has served on Rep. DeLauro's staff since 2010, rising from Staff Assistant to her latest role. Her legislative knowledge, experience, and demonstrated passion for serving the people of Connecticut's Third Congressional District make her an excellent fit for her role. “One of the things that the pandemic has brought to light are the issues that impact older adults.” — Melissa Batchelor, PhD, RN, FNP, FAAN (13:26-13:31) Are you wondering what food insecurity means for older adults before COVID-19? First, let's find out what food insecurity is. It's the social and economic factors related to someone's household experience in terms of accessing food, which is different from hunger. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will separate the two terms because hunger is more about a physiological feeling. But food insecurity is when you don't have some means to access food. In 2018, which is the most recent data that we have, approximately 5.3 million Americans, 60 and older, were food insecure. And that's about 7.3% of the senior population at the time, with millions more at risk for food insecurity. And when you factor in the at-risk population, that number increases to about 10 million.  There are a few root causes of food insecurity. The first thing is income. We know that poverty and food insecurity rates are positively correlated, meaning that as one increases, the other increases, as well. And during the Great Recession, we saw both poverty and food insecurity at a record high. In 2011, when we saw the conditions improving, food insecurity, and poverty rates decreased among the general population, but it remained high for older adults. But why is that? That's because income isn't the sole driver of food insecurity for older adults, because they also have issues with transportation, physical mobility, and waiting lists for services. When Marie found out about the waiting lists while working on an evaluation project several years ago in Central Florida, she got hooked. “The Government Accountability Office released a report on senior nutrition programs in January this year, citing that some communities had as many as 12,000 older adults waiting for meal services.” —  Marie Gualtieri, PhD (05:00-05:12) Part Two of ‘Senior Nutrition (HAPF SERIES) with Marie Gualtieri, PhD’ Because of COVID-19, there has been a massive shift in organizational efforts to address food and nutritional needs among older adults. Congregate meal programs had to revamp their services to offer things like to-go meals or even convert to home-delivered meals. Meals on Wheels America, an organization that operates in virtually every community nationwide to address senior hunger and isolation, released a pandemic-related report in May of this year. They took a snapshot of what their services were like before March 1st and afterward. They found that 89% of their programs, which is about 5,000 programs across the country, saw a substantial increase in meal requests. In fact, 79% report the number of new requests for meals has at least doubled. And the waiting list, which already existed before COVID-19, had an increase of 26%. Aside from funding, a majority of the programs find it challenging to obtain PPE so that their staff and those they're delivering to can remain safe. There have been many capacity issues as well, considering these organizations rely on volunteers for their services. But a lot of those volunteers are older adults themselves. With the pandemic, because older adults are more likely to contract the virus, the number of volunteers decreased.  But food advocacy groups predict that the pandemic's impact on food insecurity will be worse than that of the Great Recession. The passing of emergency spending packages has been pivotal in giving direct support to organizations addressing senior nutrition. Marie monitored the issues of senior nutrition issues for the Families First and CARES acts, and became staff lead on senior nutrition for the House-passed HEROES Act. Big wins were made, such as $750 million for Older Americans Act Title-3 nutrition programs under Families First and CARES, with additional funding in the HEROES Act. Additionally, the HEROES Act includes a SNAP boost of 15% and raises the minimum benefit from $16 to $30, as well as blocks administration rules to reduce SNAP benefits.  During her fellowship year, it has been a highlight for Marie to take the stories of constituents, advocacy groups, and older adults and translate them into policy responses and change. Throughout the process, Marie learned the different policy vehicles to move ideas forward. With this new knowledge and skill set, her fellowship experience has given her new opportunities to pursue as her next steps; opportunities that would not exist without her experience on the Hill. While the pandemic may have impacted the predictability of Marie’s experience this year, it has also illuminated the many issues that older adults face in various aspects of daily living and access to resources. Because of this, Marie believes that it is the perfect year to be a Health and Aging Policy Fellow, and is grateful for the opportunity. We’ve all heard the adage of “location, location, location.” The idea that when it comes to real estate, it’s about where you are—something that can be doubly important for a business. When Marie and Jamie Fox set out to find the spot for their brewery, it was not easy. The effort, which became a journey, took them all over Boulder, Colorado to look at practically any space that may have been usable for brewing. It eventually led them to sign a lease in 2016 on a 20,000 square foot facility in the city’s Gunbarrel neighborhood, giving way to Gunbarrel Brewing. I know, you probably didn’t expect the start of this podcast to talk about beer industry house hunting, but when I first met the Foxes this fall, it was hard to not be amazed at the size and scope of the the home they had found. And, at a time when success in beer can feel in flux all the time, the methodical planning they displayed feels like the kind of necessary steps companies need for current and future planning. When you open a brewery in Colorado, surrounded by some of the fiercest competition and discernable drinkers in the country, you have to be picky and smart about what you do. So while you’ll hear about the Gunbarrel lineup and how canning has changed things for the brewery, there’s also talk about what it takes and what it means when you really do find out there’s no place like home. It’s a side of the beer business that isn’t sexy, but massively important. This is Marie and Jamie Fox of Gunbarrel Brewing. Listen in.

At the beginning of this episode, Marie acknowledges to Les that she is continuing to mull over Dr. Green’s paradoxical suggestion (episode 18) that one way to overcome a sense of powerlessness is to embrace it. In today’s discussion with Dr. Liebschutz, they consider the possibility that some physicians may be able to overcome their sense of being overwhelmed and downtrodden by actually taking on more. Dr. Liebschutz, an accomplished physician leader at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, proposes to Marie that she may be able to overcome the frustration of being a “cog-in-the-wheel” generalist by “leaning in” and embracing a subspecialty area, a teaching role, or committee work that might open up the path to medical leadership. When Marie conveys her skepticism to Dr. Liebschutz, they then consider the possibility that Marie might leverage her value to her clinic by pushing for a temporary sabbatical or by reducing her work effort. They also discuss practical ways for getting more help at home. It is clear throughout this podcast that Marie is paying close attention to Dr. Liebschutz’s every word. Dr. Liebschutz comes across to Marie as a wise and experienced veteran physician, wife, and mother who has crafted a meaningful career by overcoming many of the same obstacles that are daunting to Marie. By the end of the conversation, Marie comes across as energized and inspired, ostensibly ready to put into practice many of the tips and strategies offered by MedPEP’s experts. All three physicians seem to share the view that going forward, Marie is going to chart the course of her career.

Writing a Story with an Impact   Marie White is the author of five books, including the award-winning #1 bestseller Strength for Parents of Missing Children: Surviving Divorce, Abduction, Runaways and Foster Care. She is also a Christian missionary, traveler, entrepreneur and the host of Bible Stories for Adults on YouTube with over half a million views.   When Marie started writing books, she decided that as an author she would only spend what she made from her writing. That meant about a year of no income. Getting creative with funding meant taking on ghostwriting jobs, earning commissions on collaborative books, and blocking off time to take advantage of EVERY free-trial offer that applied to what she did. Pretty soon Marie was out-earning the people who had started with $30,000 in initial funding. Marie knew the products inside and out, became sought after for entrepreneurial advice and began being invited as a guest to high-dollar events.
