What's It Like to go Deeply Undercover as a Cop?

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 7, 2023 41:47

Today, we continue the conversation with John, an experienced investigator with the Queensland Police for the past 11 years. But his past definitely would not have dictated his future when he became one of few to go undercover – for 3 years!Born in the Philippines, he felt like he was “dragged from home to home” when his mother left and he never heard the words “I love you” echoed from anyone's lips – ever!  He landed in the home of his seriously abusive Auntie, who he still gets chills recalling how much he feared her. The only person who paid him any attention was his Gangster grandfather who taught him the ropes. This made him perfect prey for a group of men who would educate him on how to survive the slums of the Philippines.Who knew that the “hustler” he was training to be would actually make him the perfect agent to go undercover one day.  Thank goodness for that serendipitous moment years later in Australia, when he happened to glimpse an Asian Police Officer filling his cop car with petrol. This so speaks to the power of “seeing really IS believing”.  After getting into the police academy and working himself to the bone to please everyone around him, he then decided that he would apply to get into the Defence Forces as well – at the same time.  Only someone who feels that its never enough would try and pull that one off!John has recently awoken to the fact that it all his “go go go” attitude stemmed from his deep and incessant need to please and be loved! After working undercover for all those years, he has re-emerged with a deep desire to reach out to “the children”…the ones who feel abandoned like he was and who feel so alone that they crave love in whatever way they can get it. This often leads to above the line successes like John has had yet acknowledging the deep addiction to VALIDATION which comes with its own destructive patterning. Many other times, these abandoned kids become the ones John ends up putting behind bars for criminal behaviour.  Imagine what could have been thwarted at the pass with some loving kindness and a compassionate understanding heart!John, you are so the man for that job!  Go to http://www.bit.ly/InTheGamePodcast to become part of this growing community of DREAMERS!

We are excited to give you a glimpse of real Super Couples taking part in my new book "PressPlay" from my website as of March 14th!!This week's couple Binny & Randi took on the final of the book: Chapter 12's "Get Jiggy With It".Find out how they went!Intro:Piecing tonight's game together is a childhood joy of mine. “Get Jiggy With It” was the brainchild of the simple and connective pastime between my Mom and I.  We did hundreds of puzzles together and affixed them on our walls as a memory.Apparently, I am not the only puzzle lover in the world: Aussie actor Hugh Jackman “the Wolverine” is famous for his daily puzzles and conviction that the resat of his family will fall in love with them too!My later study in neuroscience would shine a broader lens over the far reaching benefits of puzzling.  Our brain has an inherent tendency to organize chaos and so our childhood flair for locking pieces together is no accident.  It's just that our adult selves sometimes need a bit more permission to take on the task in later life.Super couple Binny and Randi found a way to play this game while renovating and living out of their home for the past 3 months.  Now that's commitment!   With 2 children and more than a decade together, they have learned the art of “fit-ting together”.  As only a human-rights lawyer and electrical engineer can…I am looking forward to finding out what happened to you two when you both started puzzling…  Visit my website on www.inthegamecoaching.com  for more information regarding the Relationship Series and the upcoming book launch of "PressPlay" March 2023!

We are excited to give you a glimpse of real Super Couples taking part in my new book "PressPlay" (available for purchase March 2023).This week's couple Aleisha & Hayden took on Chapter 7 called "Vision Boards Brought to Life"Find out how they went! Intro:I have the pleasure this afternoon of speaking with a couple that I have tracked into the stunning hills of New Zealand in order to get their experience of playing Chapter 7 of my book “Vision Boarding Your Common Dreams”.This particular GAME takes some forethought and preparation. It becomes well worth the effort for the focus, clarity and intention it brings to you life and relationship.  Putting your dreams out into the world is a secret ingredient that allows “others” to become cooperative components in its realisation.  How can people help you, if your dreams remain tucked into the recesses of your imagination?? Popular American Life Coach Martha Beck furthers this by stating: “The (vision)board itself doesn't impact reality; what changes your life is the process of creating the images—combinations of objects and events that will stick in your subconscious mind and steer your choices toward making the vision real.”She continues on to state, that the key is “Regularly picturing delights that don't yet exist, emotionally detaching from them, and jumping into action when it's time to help the miracles occur.”So, who better to bring this Game to life than Aleisha Cootes, a woman that inspired me more than a decade ago to fall more in love with the focus of couples and relationships. After much world travel, her and husband Hayden, married 15yrs, moved back to their homeland of New Zealand and brought their dream to life by building their family home - to which they added 3 beautiful children who surely make it come alive!I can't wait to hear how Couple Vision Boarding went for you both after all these years of creating goodness into your life…Kiora you two…  Visit my website on www.inthegamecoaching.com for more information regarding the Relationship Series and the upcoming book launch of "PressPlay" in January 2023!

The joy of knowing you scripted that into reality can be more powerful than you know.Based on some of the work of Neville Goddard in the book ‘The Power of Awareness', he states that, “Your mind is always arranged in the image of all you believe and consent to as true.” In light of that, I wanted to create a space for deliberately journaling those images that YOU (the player) get to arrange as true.  Giving yourself space and time to actually do the work is often the only missing piece to a life well lived! Before I introduce our loving couple, there is one more inspiration for this game that gave me such goosebumps in my 20s, that I knew I had to create an exercise that us in the Western World could grow from:“Introducing the woman known for “burying her dreams”: Tererai Trent of Zimbabwe.  This awe-inspiring woman developed a list of goals for herself as a young girl living in a rural African village. Her list was buried in a piece of tin behind her home in a field where she herded cattle. Unable to go to school as a child because of being born female, she secretly did her brother's homework until her father found out and married her off at age 11.  Having 3 children by age 18 with an abusive husband, she quickly divorced him the moment the family landed in America.  Over the next 20 years, she accomplished each and every goal in her tin can: earning a bachelor's and master's degrees from WMU and completing her journey from ‘life as an impoverished African child bride to a career as an international scholar who holds a Ph.D'.  Each time she returs to Zimbabwe, she digs up the list, crosses off the achieved goal and moves on to the next one.”How awe-inspiring is that?Ok, so back to the here and now and this ideal partnering for this game, supercouple, Allan & Lari.  Their 16 years of development on themselves makes them great for this game. Having lived in many places (Japan being one of them) during their 24 years together - they are about to bound out of the GC of Australia with their 2 daughters for their next big adventure in Sydney.  So, I thought “No better time than NOW” to deliberately create into their next 5 years…Visit my website on www.inthegamecoaching.com for more information regarding the Relationship Series and the upcoming book launch of "PressPlay" in January 2023!

121: An expert engineer cooling us down as the planet heats up by Western-Australian-of-the-Year James Trevelyan

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 24, 2021 46:57

Today, we continue the conversation with a man who was awarded the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for Engineering. Professor James Trevelyan from Perth is well known for his pioneering research on Sheep Shearing Robots from 1975-1993 at the U of Western Australia – where he was awarded many international engineering and robotic awards. He then moved into the research of Landmine Clearing Methods where he made a big impact in countries like Afghanistan, Cambodia, the Balkans, and many Africa countries. He then took on local schools in Islamabad, where together with his father-in-law, they architected toilet access for young kids. And now, as Western Australian of the Year, at the ripe age of 65, he founded “Close Comfort”, where he and his students engineered a personal air conditioning unit which has been made affordable for countries such as Pakistan - which aligns w his belief that safe respite from dangerous heat conditions should be a basic human right. In 2013, his TedTalk titled “Ending Poverty: what engineers can do”, was a real reflection of his commitment to contributing engineering services on behalf of the rights that all humans possess. The Goods on James:Prof. James has always been passionate about creating a positive impact on other people's lives. He has led quite a journey from being a researcher, an academician, an educator, a world-recognised engineer, an author and so on. At 65 years old, he believed his contribution to solving some of humanity's greatest challenges wasn't over; he started Close Comfort to provide safe access to affordable cooling solutions to billions of people at risk of exposure to increasingly dangerous heat conditions without warming the planet! On the way, he was awarded the prestigious Engineers Australia medal and was recognised as 2018 Western Australian of the Year in the Professions category. Close Comfort is just another example of James's belief that his role as an engineer and as a human is to give back to communities.·       In the past, he has developed sheep shearing robots that would cover the eyes and shield sheep from the shears cutting the wool while helping them fall asleep. The innovation was awarded the engineers equivalent of the Nobel prize and put him in a position "to devote the rest of my career to researching problems that truly mattered, that would help solve some of the tough challenges facing humanity".·       Instead of retiring after reaching the top of his engineer career, he turned his expertise and knowledge to clearing landmines from countries like Afghanistan, Cambodia, the Balkans in southeast Europe, and many countries in Africa.·       Or in term of being literally safe from harmful heat conditions: in Pakistan and most parts of the globe, air conditioning is costly, and for the few that can afford this luxury, the energy-hungry appliances prove too much for the energy grid to handle, leading to power outages. So, Pr James launched Close Comfort at 65 y.o, believing that safe respite from dangerous heat conditions, far from a luxury, should be a basic human right. Contact James:         Website: jamesptrevelyan.com         Close Comfort: www.closecomfort.com/au/our-story/        Books:  @books Go to http://www.bit.ly/InTheGamePodcast to become part of this growing community of DREAMERS!

Since 2013, I have trained as an Internationally Accredited Life Coach, Post-Natal Yoga teacher, and Meditation facilitator. With an Honours Degree in International Studies and a Graduate Certificate in International Development focusing on empowering women in the developing world, I have always been focused on women: why the world views us in a particular way, and what we can do about it. In 2015, having brought myself to the edge of overwhelm and burn out trying to prove I could “do it all”, I stepped away from my lifelong dream of working for the ABC to dedicate myself completely to the understanding of motherhood. I knew that what I had been through - the inner split and the burn out - was something too many of us were experiencing. And I wanted to know why. The search took many years, and many paths, until I found myself in the office of Dr Aurelie Athan at Columbia University in New York in late 2018AND I FINALLY UNDERSTOOD WHAT I'D BEEN SEEKING ALL THIS TIME: Matrescence. Since then, working closely with Dr Athan, I have dedicated myself to bringing this understanding to the world.Contact Amy:         Website: www.amytaylorkabbaz.com         Facebook: @amytaylorkabbaz         Insta: @amytaylorkabbaz Go to http://www.bit.ly/InTheGamePodcast to become part of this growing community of DREAMERS!

Today, we continue the conversation with a warrior.  Guylaine Dumont is considered the best volleyball player in Canadian history and yet, that doesn’t even begin to tell the tale...  Growing up in a small town in the Province of Quebec, her early years were filled with a father who beat her mother, and 3 sisters trying to rally together to survive it all.  At only age 13, Guylaine was moved out of home to begin playing sport full-time.  This was right around the time that her closest sister Nathalie went missing…As the youngest player ever on the Canadian national team right into adoring fans during her pro career in Italy; the darkness of her upbringing shadowed most of her career.  Consistent humiliation and abuse from coaches seemed all too familiar for her. He is committed to addressing the plight of people who do not sleep securely at night. He has gone on to continue his work in a more focussed way under the banner of Hope ReBuilders and I cannot wait to hear more about the ongoing work he is doing…especially during this past Covid year. The Goods on Santa Rod:Professional Santa for 34 years and with the Myer Centre for 30 years, with a small stint in Japan in 1998 when I was on TV and played Santa in the Japanese production of Enid Blyton's " Naughtiest School Girl"Now, back to the man underneath the cloth…I have a wealth of experience & knowledge across many of fields, after 74 trips around the sun. 12 years ago it was time to give back and get involved in addressing the plight of people who do not sleep securely at night. Habitat For Humanity had been a favourite NFP Organisation since the Northridge Earthquake in Los Angeles 17 January 1994. Retirement from the Education sector allowed time to become more supportive where I became involved in starting up the Brisbane Chapter, served as Chairman of the Queensland affiliate and then stepped into a management role after the 2011 South East Queensland floods.May 2013 - Having spent 2 years as Development Manager for Habitat For Humanity Brisbane, I spread my wings and moved into a role where I can be of service to a wider community of people needing safe secure housing. My passion has not changed. In fact it has deepened to a point where I believe the current Habitat model is not effective in fully addressing the problem. We need to get back to a more "grassroots" approach in line with Millard Fuller's original dream of partnership housing - a place where people are more important than personalities - a place where God's work is not corporatised - a place where we can be more flexible and nimble in helping the vulnerable members of our community.September 2013 - Chief Operating Officer of Fuller Center for Housing, Queensland, Australia, following the lead of Millard Fuller, the founder of both Habitat for Humanity and Fuller Center for Housing, in getting back to a more grassroots approach to tackling the problem of substandard housing.April 2018 - I am continuing on the work started all those years ago by Millard Fuller. We are still addressing the needs of those who are less fortunate and who have been socially marginalised. Having recently undergone a name change to Hope ReBuilders we are relaunching with a new vision and vigour for better addressing the situation in Australia nad South East Asia. Today, we continue the conversation with a “launch coach”. “What is that?” you might ask?? Stick with me…we will get there…Taliah-Kate Byron is only 30 years old and I say that bc she dove into the multi-billion $$ self-development and coaching industry when she was only 17. Getting stellar grades in Grammar school growing up…she chose a path less traveled than the oft worn path of University - she ”designed” her own education. Whether it was a degree in NLP, experiential game design, Vipassana meditation, speech and drama or micro business design…she kept growing herself.I met TK when a chapter of my life as a pro athlete was coming to a close and I was upskilling with NLP. I was older than she is now and she was only in her teens! I was struck by that. Her level of engagement and participation was inspiring and I was drawn to the spark that she had brimming in her.We have traveled many a PD road together (me always being 15 or so years older than her) and here we are again, but this time, she’s my COACH. She is helping me craft my offer and “launch” my new signature coaching program for women just like me called The Awakened Mama. I have learned so much from this clever wiper snapper…but her coaching goes so much deeper than what her smart brain can produce. She “tunes in” when she needs to nail a brief, she has “mental clearing processes” before she does an ‘impact post’, she can write copy that just lands with people, and she creates marketing templates that make it easy for someone like me to step my words into – it just comes to life!Clearly, I’m a fan! And I know after you hear more about her, you will be too!The Goods on TK:With over a decade in the personal development industry, my love for this work started at 17 and quickly became a passionate side-hustle. I started keynote speaking and volunteering at youth leadership camps across Australia. When those camps struggled to get ongoing funding, it became my mission to learn everything about marketing so that coaches who were making a difference in people's lives could keep their doors open by having money in their back pocket. With Jamie posting a record year of close to 7-figures in 2019 selling on Amazon and Michael having over 700 SKU's being sold in the US via Facebook and Google shopping – their brands are respected and looked up to.It hasn’t always been lucrative and easy for these boys – Jamie working 14hr days driving a truck and Michael trying his hand at many a StartUp in the tech space before hitting the “success button”.But they have discovered this world of “Micro-Brands” and if I’m honest…I don’t even have a clue about - it’s a whole new language that I am looking forward to learning more about. As the economy proves to challenge over these next 2-5 years - more and more people are searching for different ways to create side-income. I am committed to providing alternate ways for people to earn additional money that loosens the squeeze they are under. And I do lean toward those methods that sit outside the conventional 9-5 “trading time for money” space. Shall we dive in boys??The Goods on Jamie:From a young age, it was clear that Jamie had that entrepreneurial spirit built into his DNA. He started a transport business at age 22 and soon realised that he could not sustain such long hours swapping time for money. Too much of his time was spent away from his family. Jamie's hunger and motivation for change led him to discover the Amazon FBA business model. He intuitively knew that Amazon would help him leave the daily trucking grind behind. Jamie's incredible work ethic and "Get Shit Done" war cry led him to become one of the real rock stars in the Amazon world, turning over $1,000,000 in sales in the USA. Now, Jamie is giving back to the Amazon community and also reinventing supply chain processes through various software ventures. The Goods on Michael:Michael Fenech Michael has gained extensive business experience in both tech and e-commerce across the globe. He has successfully raised capital in the US and Australia, run successful e-commerce sites, and has partnered with some of the biggest companies in the world. Michael is also fortunate to have been mentored by some of the biggest names in tech. Today, we continue the conversation with an educator turned social entrepreneur dedicated to championing for “our kids”. As the most recent QLD Australian of the Year, Rachel Downie is taking the tragedy of losing a Year 9 student years ago to suicide and harnessing it, into a reporting tool called Stymie – that she developed and self-funded to support young people to anonymously report harm to their peers and to themselves. In 2019, Stymie schools reported more than 48,000 notifications from concerned students. More than 600 000 students nationally have been exposed to this culture-changing tool; as family violence, bullying, cyber-bullying, depression, illegal activity, harassment and self-harm are all being reported by young people. Through Rachel’s tireless efforts towards a better culture of care in our schools, we are beginning to get a more clear picture of what young people are really facing out there.SaySomeThing.What a brilliant tag line that's gaining incredible traction!!!When she isn’t “inventing stuff”, you can find Rachel living on the Gold Coast of Australia with her beautiful wife, surfing and painting when she gets a spare moment. The Goods on Rachel:25 years ago, Rachel Downie became an educator because she wanted to help our young people flourish. After losing a Year 9 student to suicide, Rachel decided that she needed to find a way to support our young people to say something when things ‘aren’t right’. She discovered that in emergent situations, students often felt too frightened to come forward with possible life-saving information, due to peer expectations. This led Rachel to developing and self-funding Stymie – a tool that allows students to anonymously report any form of harm without fear.Rachel developed Stymie (an old-fashioned word meaning ‘stop’) with extensive consultation and help from students and educators; since 2014 Rachel has presented Stymie to more than 600 000 students nationally and students have used it to save and change lives.Implemented both nationally and internationally, students are using Stymie to report family violence, bullying, cyber-bullying, depression, illegal activity, harassment, self-harm, and harm to their communities. In 2019, Stymie schools received more than 48 000 notifications from concerned students, empowering them to use their empathy and conscience to report harm, and further the culture of care in their schools.Contact Rachel: Facebook: @stymieau Instagram: @stymie_au Website: www.racheldownie.com LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/rachel-downie-311811134 Go to http://www.bit.ly/InTheGamePodcast to become part of this growing community of DREAMERS!

I have watched enough Rocky & Creed movies to know that the real story happens behind the scenes and away from the boxing ring. Jeff & Joanna Horn met in Year 8 and eventually married in 2014. Joanna studied business and sport’s management and can be found ringside for all of Jeff’s fights. Even his epic 12-round win in 2017 over welterweight world Champion Manny Pacquiao to thousands of Aussie screaming fans in Brisbane. Being crowned Welterweight boxing Champion thrust Jeff into the limelight like never before. Nat introduced me to Jeff at the 2012 London Games & I’ll never forget this moment of him doing some form of footwork/air punching warm up and thinking “can arms really accelerate that fast – it was like a Bruce Lee moment”. He was a relative unknown on the scene and as his popularity soars, his ego does not. Don’t you just love that in people?!? His humility and understated character has continued on no matter his successes. Somehow, he seems like that “constant underdog” that you can’t help but pull for. But then, put yourself in the shoes of his high school sweetheart wife, who has never missed a fight, with two young kids at home, (who probably liked it a lot more when he was a PE teacher), watching the man you love and the father of your kids constantly being beaten in the head. And there have been some bloody match ups for Jeff. She has been quoted as saying:“When I see him looking dazed up there, it’s just soul-destroying, being on the other side of the ropes, not knowing exactly how he’s feeling or if he’s all right, because it’s not just me now, there’s our daughters, Isabelle and Charlotte, who need him too.”She has even gone as far as saying: “How would you like it if you had to sit there and watch me get punched like that?”I know I am going to love getting to know this woman more. Someone who says what many of us are thinking. As Covid-19 hits the sporting community hard, Jeff’s April bout has been postponed and so the pressure mounts to not only from promoters to get this fight underway but also his plan of retiring by age 35 looms. Their story is what’s possible if you continue following the thread of your life! I have decided to read Lina’s words directly - to introduce them to you all bc I was so impacted when she sent it to me.Their story in Lina’s words: "My dearest Tzvetelina, take a look at this letter - someone must have thought it's trash and tossed it out but I remembered what you wrote to me a long time ago, that you are looking for a way to leave Bulgaria. Looks to me like a recruiting letter to play volleyball in an American university. This may be your chance." – This from a snail mail letter from my Cyprian pen pal, with whom I was practicing English, would change my life forever. Many things were heavily restricted in communist Bulgaria but the authorities could not stop a childhood dream, even if it was a crazy, impossible dream. At 17, I went to the United States, alone, to attend the University of Idaho on a volleyball scholarship. Three years later, Petia joined at the University of San Diego (another fun story!) and when I graduated from college, I moved to San Diego to join my sister. The year was 1996, the first time beach volleyball was played in the Olympics. Watching the competition from my couch, I started formulating yet another, even more daring dream... could it be possible to play in the Olympics? In our first few international tournaments in 1998, we got completely crushed on the court - leaving us to sleep on the streets of Marseille w no money for hotels. It was a new sport, requiring a lot of time to learn but I was working full time to support a family and Petia was still a full time student. With only 7 international tournaments under our belts, we started the year 2000 ranked #73 in the World. To qualify for the Sydney Olympics, we needed to pass 50 other more experienced, better trained and funded teams in less than two months time to make the qualification cut off. Playing on Bondi Beach in the Olympics was a dream come true. After the Sydney Olympic dream, we were joined by Mom and Dad in the United States as we continued to compete on the international tour, qualifying for and finishing 9th in Athens 2004.The dreams didn't stop there, I rebuilt myself from a divorce and bankruptcy to marrying the man of my dreams and raising a wonderful family with three children, while also building a real estate business and starting a foundation with my husband. Petia kept reaching for the stars, re-kindling a childhood dream of hers to become an Astronomer, which took her on a 12 year journey to start college all over again from scratch and defend a Ph.D. in AstroPhysics - just days before giving birth to her second baby boy. She received an invitation to join the prestigious Space Telescope Science Institute at John Hopkins University, the home of the Hubble Space Telescope, studying interstellar dust particles that can gives us hints of the origins of the Universe as well as a glimpse of where we may be headed. Completing her PhD in 2011, Fiona Driver has since presented at international events and multiple academic environments in support of children experiencing “the joy of childhood”.Having two young children herself, she has served as an accepting and uplifting sounding board for me, as our children are only one day apart in age and we used to be neighbors. During the critical years of childhood development, we as parents carry our own baggage and expectations for our children’s growth markers. Having just experienced a unique time in our history during Covid-19 Isolation, where kids came home for weeks and months, rather than the usual time spent w teachers and other students; parents have been exposed more than ever to how their kids act/react/behave. But have we been able to see who they really are? Are we able to look beyond the shield of expectations we have for them? Have we merely been exposed to who we really are as parents!?!I brought Dr. Fiona on the call today to speak some knowledge, experience and some soothing into us parents, so we can begin enjoying childhood as much as they are!The Goods on Fiona:Fiona is the Managing Partner of a private Occupational Therapy practice, focusing on supporting children and families. Today, we STOP in our TRACTS for this conversation…with a black man!  A man who has been in my life for over 20 years and impacted it in ways that continue to unfold…Steve Anderson was born in Louisville, Kentucky in the 60s – which is considered one of the most dangerous cities on earth.  When his Dad was shot by his “supposed” friend when he was just 9yrs old, anger smoldered within him, “how could my Mom not press charges? How could the other man, shot in the mouth, live; and my Dad, shot in the leg -  die?”  So many inbuilt experiences of growing up Black permeated his body before he moved to LA to start life on his own at 21 – but quickly, he began his decades-long navigation of the globe starting in Switzerland.Picked up by two budding beach volleyball players from Australia, he would move to Perth to execute the dream of winning Olympic medals – which he did with a Bronze in ’96 and a Gold in 2000 w Nat Cook & Kerri Pottharst.  Marrying his Swiss Aussie wife in 2000, he remained Nat’s coach for 16yrs.During that time, he would head up coaching programs in Bali and Venuatu and leave legacies for athletes and organizations in those countries over the next 10yrs.  My Canadian beach team would rise to our best ever World finish of 7th place under his guidance and the things I learned with this man can only be described as “zen tutelage”!Steve became instrumental in my life for being able to ask and express things that sometimes, it felt like, there was no one else to really, be comfortable asking.  My Mom married my Black Dad in 1973 (when Interracial marriage was only legalized in the US in 1967 – 6yrs prior) and many family members refused to come to that wedding. My Mom and Dad hailed from one of the most racially charged cities in Canada, being on the Atlantic Coast where many slave boats dropped off “cargo” (and I say it like that bc that’s how it was back then) in the 1800s before heading down to the US cities.  There is even a city in Atlantic Canada called “Afric-ville” bc of its dense population of blacks.  My last name of Maxwell is actually Scottish bc my great-great-great GrandFather was a cook on the ship where every black person took the Masters name of Maxwell! In 2013, Steve left to head up the whole of Team Canada BVP with his now 5yr old son and soon to be new wife Alicia. He would lead that country to #1 in the world within a short 2 year period.Recently, he was asked by his suburb, aptly named “The Beaches” in Toronto to give the speech for their #BlackLivesMatter march. He begins our conversation with his emotional share of his life experience as a Black Global Citizen of this planet we call earth! Today, we continue the conversation with the first ever female AFL Grand Final Umpire. Chelsea Roffey recounts the goosebump-worthy moment in 2012 when thousands of fans at Melbourne Cricket Ground cheered her on for her presence on the field as the historical female first in sport. She may always have been sporty yet she started out as an aspiring musician with a scholarship at the Queensland Conservatorium and transitioned into journalism due to her love of language and communication. As a Churchill Fellow exploring “social change that enables girls to be authors of their own lives”, she’s gone on to be a Gender & Diversity Facilitator, a journalist, a speaker and an author. It’s her experiences as female in a non-traditional domain however that revealed the untapped potential for driving performance through diversity.Creating an online program to help businesses climb out of Covid-19 on “How to Attract and Retain Greater Diversity”, she seems to constantly be creating new and different ways to contribute to society. The Goods on Chelsea:Gender and diversity facilitator | Churchill Fellow | First female AFL Grand Final umpireBorn in South Australia, raised in Queensland and cultured in Melbourne, an innate interest in uncharted territory lured me to the intrepid world of goal umpiring at age 17. In my youth, moustached middle-aged men in overcoats were as much a fixture of Australian football as meat pies and yelling "Ball!" for holding decisions. No moustache ... no problem! Jumping head-first into waving the flags for gender equality, it became evident that playing to my strengths would enable me to thrive. Lived experience has since proved the nature of diversity of thinking to drive both individual and collective performance. In 2012 I became the first woman to umpire an AFL Grand Final. But the true breakthrough was becoming the first umpire in history to be cheered (yes, cheered!) by the crowd ahead of that epic battle between Sydney and Hawthorn. Before my weekend hobby became a profession, I was an aspiring musician, having received an academic scholarship to study a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium. Following a stint studying biomedical science, I switched to journalism, combining a love of language and communication with the adrenaline-charged life of AFL football.I have explored themes of culture, equality and performance in a range of forums; including as an invited guest of the APEC Women's Leadership Forum in Beijing, the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York, and during a Winston Churchill Fellowship, visiting the US, Canada, UK, Sweden and India.Pioneering the role of women in a non-traditional domain, my experiences have alerted me to the untapped potential in driving performance through diversity.Contact Chelsea: LinkedIn: @chelsearoffey Website: www.chelsearoffey.com.au Diversity Program: www.firstinfield.com.auGo to http://www.bit.ly/InTheGamePodcast to become part of this growing community of DREAMERS!

Eventually marrying her Kung Fu teacher (as you do), now speaking fluent Mandarin, and becoming the first foreigner to appear as the host of a TV show, called “You are the Chef”. Based on the Sunshine Coast of Australia, Howard & Cyndi O’Meara have their sights on Generational Health with their thriving company “Changing Habits”.Their mutual eclectic backgrounds are what I believe has them serve their community in a unique and profound way: Howard began as a teacher then into the Police force where he was selected as Prince Edwards’ long-time NZ personal bodyguard then becoming a team Chiropractor traveling the world with NZ rugby, BBall, Rugby union, BMX, surf life saving, iron man and the best of all Beach Volleyball where we fell in love with him! All the while, Cyndi was focusing on her passion for nutrition but couldn’t stomach the traditional teachings at Uni so headed off for what was then “alternative” caveman research in Colorado to uncover more. Upon her return to Australia, she tried her hand at pre-med and Chiropractic where she met Howard. Her heart wasn’t fully in it and she focused on family for the next yrs, including traveling across all of Australia in a supped-up bus for two years with all three kids. Then, in 1998, she wrote her first book “Changing Habits, Changing Lives” – which was an instant best-seller. It became evident that the world was receptive to her controversial ideas around nutrition – she no longer had to sit on the sidelines but began speaking her message to very open ears! Though the local newspaper would ask her to retract her stories denigrating margarine, we all know that her rants on the goodness of butter are but one of the topics where she is having “the last laugh”.About 10yrs ago, Howard approached Cyndi with the creative vision that they could bring their OWN products to market to accentuate the message she was gathering crowds around week in and week out. They began with an initial order of 500kilos of their “ultra-healthy salts” which sold out immediately. Having 35 staff at their most prosperous, today, they import over 6 tons of their salt to their loyal community of Health nuts! The Goods on Cyndi & Howie:Cyndi is about educating.
