Austin “Wade” Wilson, PhD, CMPC, is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant with nearly two decades of experience in the field of mental performance and 10-plus years of experience researching, teaching, lecturing, and supervising at the post-secondary level. He has designed and taught post-secondary level courses in general sport and exercise psychology, applied mental performance, psychology of injury, and sociology of sport. He is the President & Owner of Wilson Mental Performance Consulting (WMPC) and the President & Director of The MENTOR Magazine, Inc. (TMM). Since 2008, Wade has been a member of several professional associations and has equipped athletes, students, coaches, and professionals from various sectors with the mental acumen required for peak performance.His approach integrates a systematic process of education, acquisition, and implementation of mental training skills into practice and performance regimes. His clientele spans from varsity and ESports athletes to Paralympians, extending beyond sports to include military, sales, and business sectors. Wade's academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Recreation and Leisure Studies from the University of Waterloo, a Master's in Human Kinetics from the University of Windsor, and an Honours BA in Sport Psychology from Laurentian University. He also holds an Advanced Diploma as a Child and Youth Worker from Loyalist College, a Professional Certificate in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy from Wilfrid Laurier University and has received certified professional training for cognitive behaviour therapy and single-session therapy.In 2023, he achieved the status of Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) with the Association of Applied Sport Psychology and has recently joined the registry of approved supervisors. As a former athlete, Wade has competed in various sports, both artistic/aesthetic and power/performance, with ice hockey being his primary interest.Wade was a goaltender at the Junior C, and Junior A, and had a rapid cup of coffee at the U-Sport varsity level. Off the field, Wade enjoys walks with his rescue greyhounds, Willa and Pearl, listening to jazz music, and cheering for his favourite NFL team, the Baltimore Ravens. Through experience of her own, Tracy found that there was no help or guidance for parents who receive a prenatal diagnosis that respected the dignity of the child in the womb. She co-founded the organization Be Not Afraid to do just that, remaining in line with Church teaching and the research. Be Not Afraid has transformed into an organization that trains other entities through their BNA model to walk with parents and provide support and encouragement throughout pregnancy. Episode No. 671 features curator, professor, and former museum director Dean Sobel, and artist Jackie Winsor. Winsor, a leading Canadian-American post-minimalist and feminist sculptor, died last week at 82. She was the first female sculptor to receive a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1979), which holds five of her works in its collection. The most recent institutional survey of Winsor's work was at MAMCO Geneva in 2022. This week's program opens with Sobel, who organized the 1991 Winsor retrospective at the Milwaukee Art Museum. (The show traveled to the Newport Harbor Art Museum, Newport Beach, Calif., the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Akron Art Museum in Ohio. Sobel was later the director of the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, and is a professor at the University of Denver. Next will be host Tyler Green's 2014 conversation with Winsor, apparently the next-to-last interview for which she sat. (See her 2019 program with MoMA curator Christophe Cherix.) Recently, a video of a physicist eating uranium while delivering a lecture appeared on my social media feed. While I ignored it once or twice, THE ALGORITHM knows me better than I know myself, and I eventually watched it. However, the short clip contained no information, and I couldn't tell the context of why someone would do this, let alone if it was even real. Turns out…it's very real. This is the full, unedited version of “The Nuclear Scare Scam”, a talk delivered by a man named Galen Winsor in 1985. The “uranium eating” takes place around the 1 hour 12 minute mark. Galen Winsor was a nuclear physicist who served in the Navy during World War II, returning home to help design and operate the first nuclear power plant in Hanford, WA – and many power plants thereafter. Winsor dismantles the exaggerated fears surrounding nuclear energy, revealing how strategic disinformation and vested interests have perpetuated a culture of radiophobia in America. Through personal anecdotes and historical context, he argues that the dangers of low-level radiation have been blown out of proportion. He critiques the overly cautious regulations driven by economic and political agendas, suggesting that these fears were deliberately cultivated to hinder the growth of atomic technology. Winsor makes some…potentially controversial points in this talk. Most notably, his opinion on Three Mile Island. Currently, I am neither supporting nor condemning any of his spicier ideas – that's for future episodes. But: in the 1980s, Winsor traveled across America giving this same talk 77 times - and thus snacked on uranium dust 77 times. In the most recent update to a widely discussed lawsuit, U.S. Federal Judge Allen Winsor gave a resounding ruling last Wednesday. The case pitted the Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, against media giant Walt Disney Company. Disney had argued that they experienced unfair retribution from the state of Florida due to their opposition to a particular legislation targeted at education. However, Winsor formally dropped the lawsuit, declaring that Disney did not present robust jurisdictional grounds for the complaint. Disney's accusations against DeSantis, as well as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight district board, stemmed from what they perceived as an infringement on their right to free speech. Nevertheless, the judge's decision was influenced by legal precedents which demonstrated that Disney's claims did not align with established interpretations of freedom of speech laws. Winsor's decision was emphatic. 'Disney lacks standing to sue the Governor or the Secretary,' he announced, grounding his judgment in an understanding of the Constitution as it pertains to the delineation of authority and powers. It was a notable ruling in a highly publicized case, with implications that could ripple throughout the corporate world and their political engagements. Winsor further noted that a constitutionally valid statute could not be the basis for claims of free speech infringements. The judge stated, 'When a statute is facially constitutional, a plaintiff cannot bring a free-speech challenge by asserting that the lawmakers who passed it acted with a wrong intention.' In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are yet again talking all things hiking the PCT in a high snow year. This episode was recorded in early March, now that we have a clearer picture of what the 2023 hiking season will look like, and it is historically snowy. Today's episode features a pair of interviews- first we are joined by Daniel Winsor, 2017 PCT NOBO thru-hiker and author of "Crunch: A Million Snowy Steps Along the Pacific Crest Trail". Daniel was one of the first people through the Sierra in 2017, another historically high snow year, and shares in detail what his experience looked like, including his preferred traction, how to safely navigate high water crossings, the importance of traveling with a group, the schedule necessary for making miles, his close calls, and more. We are then joined by Ned Tibbits, founder of Mountain Education, a non-profit, public charity wilderness school that has been teaching people how to safely backpack year-round since 1982. Ned gives us even more nitty gritty detail about his advice for navigating the Sierra in high snow, including the safest time to enter the Sierra, the proper traction equipment, managing water crossings, and more.
