On this episode of the podcast, we brought on Tracy Winsor, co-founder and Parent Director of the organization Be Not Afraid, to discuss hope in the midst of a prenatal diagnosis. Through experience of her own, Tracy found that there was no help or guidance for parents who receive a prenatal diagnosis that respected the dignity of the child in the womb. She co-founded the organization Be Not Afraid to do just that, remaining in line with Church teaching and the research. Be Not Afraid has transformed into an organization that trains other entities through their BNA model to walk with parents and provide support and encouragement throughout pregnancy. Boston Common has the distinction of being the first Public Park in America after Puritan colonists bought the land in 1634. Though it's beautiful today, this park has a deeply dark history. It quickly became the grounds for Puritan punishments (think: whipping posts, stocks, and executions). Grab a warm cup as we explore the lives of women who were put to death here and whether or not they still haunt the grounds today.Tea of the Day: DM & Co. At my last appointment she was scheduling me for an MRI and there is a mandatory weight question. She told me about it upfront, said she would not weigh me but that she needed a number to put in there. She asked me what I thought she should write, I gave her the answer, and that was that. It felt like a win. It felt like I had taught her something and that she valued the lesson."So of COURSE Asher begged Cara to come on his podcast. Who wouldn't?! Episode No. 671 features curator, professor, and former museum director Dean Sobel, and artist Jackie Winsor. Winsor, a leading Canadian-American post-minimalist and feminist sculptor, died last week at 82. She was the first female sculptor to receive a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1979), which holds five of her works in its collection. The most recent institutional survey of Winsor's work was at MAMCO Geneva in 2022. This week's program opens with Sobel, who organized the 1991 Winsor retrospective at the Milwaukee Art Museum. (The show traveled to the Newport Harbor Art Museum, Newport Beach, Calif., the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Akron Art Museum in Ohio.  Sobel was later the director of the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, and is a professor at the University of Denver. Next will be host Tyler Green's 2014 conversation with Winsor, apparently the next-to-last interview for which she sat. (See her 2019 program with MoMA curator Christophe Cherix.) The program was recorded on the occasion of "Jackie Winsor: With and Within" at The Aldrich, Ridgefield, Conn. For images, see Episode No. 154.

Recently, a video of a physicist eating uranium while delivering a lecture appeared on my social media feed. While I ignored it once or twice, THE ALGORITHM knows me better than I know myself, and I eventually watched it. However, the short clip contained no information, and I couldn't tell the context of why someone would do this, let alone if it was even real. Turns out…it's very real. This is the full, unedited version of “The Nuclear Scare Scam”, a talk delivered by a man named Galen Winsor in 1985. The “uranium eating” takes place around the 1 hour 12 minute mark. Galen Winsor was a nuclear physicist who served in the Navy during World War II, returning home to help design and operate the first nuclear power plant in Hanford, WA – and many power plants thereafter. Winsor dismantles the exaggerated fears surrounding nuclear energy, revealing how strategic disinformation and vested interests have perpetuated a culture of radiophobia in America. Through personal anecdotes and historical context, he argues that the dangers of low-level radiation have been blown out of proportion. He critiques the overly cautious regulations driven by economic and political agendas, suggesting that these fears were deliberately cultivated to hinder the growth of atomic technology. Winsor makes some…potentially controversial points in this talk. Most notably, his opinion on Three Mile Island. Currently, I am neither supporting nor condemning any of his spicier ideas – that's for future episodes. But: in the 1980s, Winsor traveled across America giving this same talk 77 times - and thus snacked on uranium dust 77 times. Winsor did eventually die… ...in 2008, at the age of 86, more than 20 years after “The Nuclear Scare Scam” was recorded. It's hard to argue with the results. *** OOTB, produced by Photon Media, is made possible by Cold Light Legacy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that thrives on community support. jason@coldlight.org --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/radmed/support

Takeaways: The future of work is shifting towards an open talent model, where individuals have the freedom to work on specific tasks and projects rather than being tied to traditional roles. Companies need to adapt to this new model by rethinking their organizational structures, embracing remote work, and creating platforms that connect talent with opportunities. Continuous learning and upskilling are crucial in an open talent world, as individuals need to stay relevant and adaptable to changing demands. Culture and branding remain important, but they should be focused on attracting and retaining talent based on the value and opportunities the organization provides.  Platforms play a crucial role in connecting skilled individuals with opportunities in the open talent market. Generative AI has the potential to significantly impact the open talent landscape, enabling faster and more efficient task completion. Concerns about economic collapse and commoditization arise in the open talent market. Team building and community remain important in an open talent framework, fostering collaboration and connection. Work should be seen as an aspect of life, and individuals should derive their self-worth and identity from a broader range of experiences and relationships. In the most recent update to a widely discussed lawsuit, U.S. Federal Judge Allen Winsor gave a resounding ruling last Wednesday. The case pitted the Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, against media giant Walt Disney Company. Disney had argued that they experienced unfair retribution from the state of Florida due to their opposition to a particular legislation targeted at education. However, Winsor formally dropped the lawsuit, declaring that Disney did not present robust jurisdictional grounds for the complaint. Disney's accusations against DeSantis, as well as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight district board, stemmed from what they perceived as an infringement on their right to free speech. Nevertheless, the judge's decision was influenced by legal precedents which demonstrated that Disney's claims did not align with established interpretations of freedom of speech laws. Winsor's decision was emphatic. 'Disney lacks standing to sue the Governor or the Secretary,' he announced, grounding his judgment in an understanding of the Constitution as it pertains to the delineation of authority and powers. It was a notable ruling in a highly publicized case, with implications that could ripple throughout the corporate world and their political engagements. Winsor further noted that a constitutionally valid statute could not be the basis for claims of free speech infringements. The judge stated, 'When a statute is facially constitutional, a plaintiff cannot bring a free-speech challenge by asserting that the lawmakers who passed it acted with a wrong intention.' This statement underlined the complexity and subtlety of constitutionally grounded arguments.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The integration of Generative AI (Gen AI) in retail, as discussed by Paul Winsor of Snowflake, is setting a new course for the industry. His insights, rooted in a deep understanding of retail and data analytics, highlight the transformative power of AI, extending beyond conventional machine learning. Essential Data Strategy for AI Integration A key insight from Winsor's talk is the critical interdependence of AI strategies and robust data frameworks. For retailers, the path to leveraging Gen AI effectively lies in overcoming the hurdle of fragmented data. Snowflake's platform is a testament to this, offering a unified, accessible, and secure data environment vital for crafting potent AI models. The Shift to Individualized Customer Engagement Retail is moving from broad personalization to nuanced individualization in customer interactions. An exemplar of this trend is Sainsbury's Nectar Card program, offering tailor-made product recommendations weekly. This level of individualized marketing requires a nuanced understanding of customer behavior, facilitated by integrated data systems. Streamlining Supply Chains via Data Sharing Under Armour's application of Snowflake for seamless data sharing underlines the significance of timely data exchange in refining supply chains. Sharing crucial information like sales, inventory, and demand without data transfer challenges is key. This approach enhances supply chain responsiveness and efficiency. Emergence of Retail Media as a Revenue Avenue The burgeoning sector of retail media, especially offsite advertising, opens new revenue streams for retailers. Linking first-party customer data with offsite advertising, while ensuring data security through clean rooms, is gaining momentum. The sector's projected revenue growth underscores its potential. Forecasting Retail's AI-Driven Future The retail sector's evolving relationship with Gen AI and large language models is moving towards practical applications. Future NRF conferences are likely to focus on the real-world deployment of these technologies in enhancing customer experience and operational effectiveness. In summary, Paul Winsor's perspectives illuminate AI's pivotal role in retail, predicated on a solid data foundation. The retail journey ahead will be marked by strategies centered around customer individualization, supply chain innovation, and the exploration of new retail media landscapes. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theretailpodcast/message

In the latest episode of the Innovation Storytellers Show, I sit down with John Winsor, Founder and Chairman of Open Assembly, to examine the intricacies of the future of work. John, who is an authority on open talent and innovative work models, brings decades of experience and wisdom to the conversation.   Winsor is not a stranger to groundbreaking ideas. He has served as an executive in residence at Harvard Business School's Laboratory for Innovation Science and is currently writing his sixth book, "Open Talent: Leveraging a Global Workforce to Solve Your Biggest Challenges." His expertise places him at the crossroads of innovation, disruption, and storytelling—my favorite trifecta.   John details how work as we know it is undergoing a radical transformation. Traditional office settings and 9-to-5 commitments are giving way to a more dynamic, fluid, and global workforce. He challenges businesses to rethink how and where they source their talent, suggesting that the next genius addition to their team might not be within the "four walls" of their office. Instead, he introduces the concept of a digital aggregation platform that reduces the friction associated with adopting open talent and freelancing models, facilitating a seamless transition to more adaptive and efficient working modes. John's work also has a broader societal ambition. He recently co-founded a global industry coalition, the Center for the Transformation of Work, which aims to revolutionize the workplace for a billion people by 2025. It's a lofty goal that magnifies the scale and urgency of the changes we are witnessing in workspaces and workstyles. This episode is a compelling narrative that combines John Winsor's strategic foresight with my expertise in storytelling to paint a vivid picture of what the future could, and perhaps should, look like for businesses and professionals alike. To add a touch of intrigue, John also teases an upcoming excerpt in the Harvard Business Review and discusses his forthcoming book set to be published in 2024. All said and done, this episode is an invaluable resource for leaders and thinkers who are willing to challenge traditional notions and are hungry for a glimpse of what the future of work holds.

How ought that knowledge affect decisions to consume that pornographic material?   How does the pornography industry harm our perceptions of others as individuals made in the image of God? Why might “rigid, disengaged homes,” per Brent's description, often become an environment in which many individuals become sex addicts? What habits can you establish to “live in this world of technology… but do it in a healthy manner,” as Brent says? “There is hope”: Recovering from pornography addiction

Got an idea for a guest or topic? If you would like to share your own story, complete the form on OCF's “Be a Guest” webpage. Alternatively, if you have an idea for a guest or topic I should consider for a future episode of the show, send an email to podcast@ocfusa.org.   Show Notes: In January 2023, Pensacola OCF hosted a one-day workshop to discuss sexual brokenness and unwanted sexual behaviors like pornography addiction and to introduce solutions for healing and wholeness. CAPT Brent & Nicole Breining, USN (Ret.), led sessions throughout that one-day workshop, and they join me today on the podcast as we begin a series of episodes focusing on similar topics. Brent and Nicole share their story and the impact that porn had on their marriage in this episode, and their remaining three Crosspoint episodes will cover topics such as the nature of addiction, the shame cycle, and the neurochemistry of the brain. Having reached a breaking point in their marriage in 2012 and recovered since then by God's grace, Brent and Nicole talk about why that addiction placed such a strain on their marriage, how God worked through accountability partners in their healing process, and more. Above all, their desire is for listeners to understand there is hope and that God can restore anyone struggling with problematic sexual behaviors. Brent retired from the Navy in 2017 after a distinguished 27-year career, and he currently serves as a Foursquare Institutional Chaplain with Pure Desire Ministries, through which he helps men walk in sexual purity and break free from unwanted sexual behaviors. Nicole received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Illinois and a Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Illinois at Chicago, going on to work as a hospital pharmacist for 25 years. Nicole also has been working with Pure Desire Ministries, leading their betrayal and beyond groups for spouses for about three years. Both Brent and Nicole are accredited pastoral professionals. As you listen to this conversation with Brent and Nicole, here are a few questions to ponder in your personal time, with a small group, or with a mentor: How can the church establish a culture of grace, especially as applies to this topic of addiction? Brent refers to Ephesians 5:25, which says “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” How does this verse shape your view of emotional intimacy in marriage? Brent talks about the iPhone's contribution to an increased accessibility to pornography in recent years. What steps can you take to ensure your own devices aren't contributing to addictive behaviors? How does our freedom in Christ set us free from the shame of our secrets? Nicole talks about realizing her husband's struggles with pornography prompted her to react in sin as well. If you've been hurt by someone else's sin, what's the value of not using their sin as license to sin in response? If you're struggling with addictive behaviors, sexual or otherwise, what positive habits can you establish to replace those behaviors? Why is assessing your heart posture in all things so critical?   Loads of Resources on this topic Problematic Sexual Behavior (Men): Books: Laaser, M. (2004). Backpacker Radio
#193 | Hiking the PCT in a High Snow Year with Daniel Winsor and Ned Tibbits

Backpacker Radio

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are yet again talking all things hiking the PCT in a high snow year. This episode was recorded in early March, now that we have a clearer picture of what the 2023 hiking season will look like, and it is historically snowy. Today's episode features a pair of interviews- first we are joined by Daniel Winsor, 2017 PCT NOBO thru-hiker and author of "Crunch: A Million Snowy Steps Along the Pacific Crest Trail". Daniel was one of the first people through the Sierra in 2017, another historically high snow year, and shares in detail what his experience looked like, including his preferred traction, how to safely navigate high water crossings, the importance of traveling with a group, the schedule necessary for making miles, his close calls, and more. We are then joined by Ned Tibbits, founder of Mountain Education, a non-profit, public charity wilderness school that has been teaching people how to safely backpack year-round since 1982. Ned gives us even more nitty gritty detail about his advice for navigating the Sierra in high snow, including the safest time to enter the Sierra, the proper traction equipment, managing water crossings, and more. A lot of Ned and Daniel's advice overlaps, some of it deviates. Importantly- the advice issued in today's show is for informational purposes only. This is not intended to and should not be relied upon solely for how to navigate dangerous, backpacking conditions, which the PCT is sure to offer this year and beyond. Please seek the guidance of a skilled instructor for learning how to backpack through high snow and do not rely solely on any podcast, this one included. We wrap the show with two very embarrassing stories for ole Badger. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Re-Examining LayerNorm, published by Eric Winsor on December 1, 2022 on LessWrong. Please check out the colab notebook for interactive figures and more detailed technical explanations. This post is part of the work done at Conjecture. Special thanks to Sid Black, Dan Braun, Carlos Ramón Guevara, Beren Millidge, Chris Scammell, Lee Sharkey, and Lucas Teixeira for feedback on early drafts. There's a lot of non-linearities floating around in neural networks these days, but one that often gets overlooked is LayerNorm. This is understandable because it's not "supposed" to be doing anything; it was originally introduced to stabilize training. Contemporary attitudes about LayerNorm's computational power range from "it's just normalizing a vector" to "it can do division apparently". And theories of mechanistic interpretability such as features as directions and polytopes are unhelpful, or even harmful, in understanding normalization's impact on a network's representations. After all, normalization doesn't alter the direction of vectors, but it still bends lines and planes (the boundaries of polytopes) out of shape. As it turns out, LayerNorm can be used as a general purpose activation function (you can solve MNIST with a LayerNorm MLP, for example). Concretely, it can do things like this: and this: We will explain what's going on in these animations later, but the point is that to develop a strong, principled theory of mechanistic interpretability, we need to grapple with this non-linearity. In this interactive notebook, we study LayerNorm systematically using math and geometric intuition to characterize the ways in which it can manipulate data. We show that the core non-linearity of LayerNorm can be understood via simple geometric primitives. We explain how these basic primitives may perform semantic operations. For example, folding can be viewed as extracting extremal features (e.g. separating extreme temperatures from normal ones). We leverage these primitives to understand more complex low-dimensional classification tasks with multiple layers of non-linearities. The methods and intuition developed here extend to non-linearities beyond LayerNorm, and we plan to extend them in future work. Below is an interactive summary of the content of the notebook. (If you find the summary interesting, you really should check out the notebook: manipulating the figures helps build geometric intuition.) Summary The formula for LayerNorm is something messy like But it turns out the core non-linear operation is (almost) normalizing a vector: Graphically, this function has the iconic sigmoid shape in one dimension (note that in 1D the norm is simply the absolute value). Interesting things start happening when we precompose this normalization function with affine transformations (such as scaling and shifting). Below, we start with a collection of points, (x,y), distributed uniformly on the sphere. Then we compute uϵ(tx,y) (stretch/shrink by a factor of t in the x direction and then normalize). Since normalization guarantees points end up on the circle, this operation stretches the distribution along the circle. The right hand panel illustrates how this stretching is captured in the shape of a 1D activation function (the x coordinate of the input against the x coordinate of the output). For example, when t is close to 5, we see that any points with x coordinates not near 0 get compressed towards x=−1 or x=1. This matches the picture in the circle where we see the points bunch up at the left and right sides of the circle. If we make the same plots with a shifting operation, uϵ(x+t,y), the operation folds the input data. We can envision possible "semantic" uses for these geometric operations. Stretching can be used to perform an approximate "sign" operation (as in + or - sign). For example, it ...

Join host Karen Garnett as she welcomes Tracy Winsor, Co-Founder and Parent Program Director of Be Not Afraid. Be Not Afraid is serving a critical need, offering a proven model of success to support parents carrying their pre-born babies to term following a prenatal diagnosis. In a world where abortion is “recommended to be ‘legal in cases of fetal anomaly'” – even in states where abortion is now illegal following Dobbs – completely disrespecting every pre-born baby's inherent value and unalienable right to life from the moment of his or her existence – statistics show that 80% of parents who receive a serious prenatal diagnosis end the pregnancy. Yet, if offered a service of comprehensive support, 80% decide to carry to term instead! Offering trainings across the country to educate and equip pro-lifers, BNA collaborates with Heartbeat International, the Charlotte Lozier Institute, Her PLAN, the National Catholic Bioethics Center, the American Association of Pro-Life OBGYNs, the American College of Pediatricians, and Sidewalk Advocates for Life.
