Today, we're diving into an incredible story of resilience and drive with YT Mob's own Sian A'Hern. From a total skeptic about mountain biking to racing at Nationals - and then World Cups - all within a couple of years, Sian's journey has been nothing short of remarkable. But it hasn't been all smooth sailing; she's faced multiple injuries, each time coming back stronger. We explore her mental strategies, the tools she relies on to stay focused, and how she's overcoming the feeling of getting too comfortable since achieving her dream of making it onto a factory team. Sian's outlook on life and bikes is contagious, and there's a lot to learn from her story. So, it's time to sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Sian A'Hern. This past August, the day after Micayla Gatto's 36th birthday, the freerider, filmmaker and artist was at a boatyard in Squamish. She was there to fix up the family's sailboat. Her goal is not only to get the craft seaworthy, but to use it to travel to new riding destinations—another chapter in the varied career of the rider-Renaissance woman. In the 2000s, Gatto competed in downhill, earning national championship titles. After a bad crash in 2014, she stepped away from racing. In 2017, her video with IFHT, “Ferda Girls”—a parody of Kendrick Lamar's “Humble” that critiqued the sexism and the challenges women face in mountain biking—won Crankworx's Dirt Diaries. The video remains a landmark in Gatto's career. Today, Gatto, a YT Mob member, continues to ride big lines and is an alternate for this fall's edition of Red Bull Rampage, which will include women riders for the first time.Another first in 2024 is the FMBA Slopestyle World Championships for women. Can Gatto connect her riding and activism to progress in the sport such as that? She is maybe a bit humble, and mixes her analysis with humour. “I mean, I've had a couple of people name their babies after me,” she says in this episode of the Canadian Cycling Magazine Podcast. “So, I've got to be doing something right. (Or I just have a cool name.)”Find out more in this wide ranging interview with Gatto that also looks at another one of her pursuits, the art of tattooing, and how it is connected with mountain biking. Also in this episode is Derek Gee. The rider from Osgoode, Ont., won a stage at this year's Critérium du Dauphiné, held the leader's jersey for a stage and finished third overall. Later in the summer, he rode to an impressive ninth at the Tour France. He looks ahead to the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec et de Montréal. Editors Matthew Pioro and Matt Hansen look further at the WorldTour races set to run in a little more than a week. Big names are on their way to Canada.

Texi shares how he manages to successfully combine having four children with elite-level racing, offering some great insights on becoming the best version of yourself. YT Industries saw promise in Vali Höll before she even started racing on the World Cup circuit, signing her on a six-year contract when she was just 13 years old. The Austrian then went on to win two Junior World Cup overall titles as well as two World Championship titles on the YT Tues before moving up to the Elite category. A nasty crash sidelined her for her first Elite World Championships in 2020, but she came back swinging in 2021 as a part of the newly formed RockShox Trek Race Team, winning the overall title in what was her first full year racing in the Elite category. In her three years with the team, she's racked up eight World Cup wins, two overall titles, and two World Championship titles. Now, in what feels like a homecoming, the 22-year-old Austrian has signed with The YT Mob. You can read the official YT Mob press release here. We talk about why Höll signed with the German brand really early in the 2023 season, what she's most looking forward to with the new team, learning to deal with disappointment, what it was like to finally race against Rachel Atherton last season, and more. The podcast is above if you'd like to listen to our conversation. Alternatively, a transcript is below.

Enduro rider Kasper Woolley has had a terrible run of luck in the past year. In August 2022, a rider going the wrong way on a pump track smashed into Woolley. This past February, he crashed on a trail and damaged his spleen. The injury was so severe that he faced a five-month recovery. Woolley, who's been on YT Mob since the start of the year, is now planning his return to competition at the end of July at the Cranworx's Canadian Open Enduro. Later in September, it's off to France for the final events of the UCI Enduro World Cup. It's a late start to the season, but one Woolley is looking forward to. As he's done in the past, he's sure to be on podiums once again.

Martin Whiteley is someone who likes to work behind the scenes, however, many of you will know his name. From the mid-80s onwards, Martin has been involved with the growth of mountain biking, and through his time as CEO of Australian Cycling, working at the UCI and running some of the biggest downhill race teams in history, Martin has played a role in shaping our sport into what it is today. With all this history, it's hard to pick and choose what to cover, so this episode is pretty long and I've split it into two parts. Part one covers Martin's background and his time at the UCI. We hear about his work with Global Racing, G-Cross Honda, Trek World Racing and the YT Mob, and get his thoughts on talent development. Part two will be dropping tomorrow, where we'll talk about Red Bull, the Discovery takeover, athlete management and plenty more. For now, here's part one. Our guest for the latest NSMB Podcast is Ben Arnott, a World Cup downhill mechanic, engineer, and small business owner. Ben spent several years working as the head mechanic for Trek World Racing and the YT Mob and the stories from his time following the circus provide a fascinating look into the World Cup. For six of his years with the teams, Ben was also responsible for the team truck. He got to know it intimately while driving the large rig on the small, European mountain roads to each venue. But Ben recently pulled back from wrenching for World Cup athletes like Greg Williamson, Angel Suarez, and David Trummer. Instead, he's remained in Canada for the first summer since immigrating and is focused on sharpening his engineering skills with OneUp Components. He hasn't completely left the wrenching world either and keeps his hands busy servicing products from Formula and EXT, which he imports through his distribution business, Alba. And while no longer wrenching on the World Cup, he's not saying it will never happen again.

There's an Outkast song with a quote describing Teddy Pendergrass as cooler than Freddie Jackson sipping a milkshake in a snowstorm. That quote could easily be attached to the one and only, John Hall, mechanic for Aaron Gwin and the YT Mob. From his South Dakota roots racing BMX to New World Disorder-inspired hucking, John landed in Southern California when he served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Not wanting to return home after his service, he worked construction and eventually landed a job as a bike mechanic at a shop in Hemet, California. Combine a willingness to work with a little bit of timing, luck and friendships and eventually John found his way to working with Aaron. Fast-forward to today and he's helped earn boatload of World Cup DH wins and provided design input on the new YT TUES. Get inspired by a steady demeanor and strong work ethic and enjoy this Inside Line with Mr. Cool John Hall.
