Yesterday was another big day for the CIF softball and baseball playoffs. Unfortunately the St. Joseph baseball team and the Santa Ynez softball team were eliminated from the playoffs. We talk about their games and the state of north county baseball and softball. It seems like a down year for North County representatives in the CIF playoffs, is this just a down cycle or start of a trend? The CIF Track 'Masters Meet' is set and Sarah Perkins from Santa Ynez made it in shot put, how did the rest of the field turn out? Will any other area athletes make it? And finally, the Elk's Rodeo is about a week away and they have already crowned some winners. The playoffs are here and we saw a bunch of really great games on Tuesday and are preparing for more great action later in the week. Nipomo swimming brought home the first CIF title to the Central Coast for the Spring season and several teams are preparing for their first taste of the postseason. The Lompoc Valley is no stranger to college signings but two recent ones could start a new trend, wrestling. Santa Maria is scheduled to play in the first CIF Southern Section championship game held on the Santa Maria High campus Saturday night. The Saints are making their first title game appearance since 1988. They've never won a CIF championship on the gridiron and were runners-up in 1927, 1972, 1984 and 1988. First, Ainuu Taua, one of the most dominant football players to hail from the Central Coast is making his way up the UCLA depth chart and looks to be a central figure on their defensive line this year. Lorenzo Reyna talks about his potential role with the Bruins. Abu Danladi has quickly risen from Dunn School in Santa Ynez to become one of the premier young players in Major League Soccer. After becoming the top overall pick in this year's super-draft he made his first start for Minnesota recently and is already making a big impact. And finally, we take a look at the hard work and perseverance of Nancy Juarez who recently signed a scholarship to run track at Cal State Stanislaus, and has been working throughout the summer to prepare.

Football is back! Well, maybe getting close. We are two weeks away from week zero and we're getting ready for the season. We invited teams from all over the Central Coast to come to St. Joseph High School for our Media Day to get their pictures taken for our prep football preview (coming out Aug. 20) and to talk about their thoughts on the upcoming season.

The 70th edition of 805SportsTalk has a welcome back kind of feeling to it — football is right around the corner, and we can't wait! First, Assistant Sports Editor Joe Bailey tells us about Sunday night's performances by Karlos and Jose Balderas, who won their boxing matches in Bakersfield. Then we get to football. Kenny Cress talks about St. Joseph opening up camp with a new head coach. Lorenzo J. Reyna talks about the impact of some recent Lompoc grads on the Allan Hancock football team, and our sports team gets you ready for our High School Media Day, coming up this Saturday.

Karlos and Jose Balderas each will take to the ring this weekend, Karlos looking for his second professional win and Jose looking for his first. Joe Bailey will be headed down to the fight in Bakersfield this weekend, but first, he gets you ready for the action with a preview of each fighter and their match-up. Elliott Stern and Lorenzo J. Reyna have been following our local Babe Ruth teams as they make their way through the regional tournament - they catch us up on how everyone is faring - plus Elliott will talk about the strong performance that One Way Water Polo had at the Junior Olympics. Finally, Righetti graduate Kristina Santiago will be inducted into the Cal Poly Hall of Fame this fall after a brilliant stint as a Mustang, and a professional career overseas.

Several youth baseball teams made it to sectional tournaments and some have even made their way to regional tournaments - Lompoc in Lake Tahoe and Santa Maria in Arizona. Our team looks back on some of the teams that have lost, and they preview the road ahead for the teams still playing. Arroyo Grande grad Louie Quintana left Arizona State to become the Head Coach for Oregon State track and field and cross country teams, both for the men and women. We talk about the job head of him, and if he can create a path for the Beavers to rival Oregon as track royalty. Also Lorenzo Reyna talks about the love and support the Scott family has received from the Lompoc community, and he looks back on Noah Scott's memorial, his return to his hometown, and one of the largest pickup baseball games in history.

This week features some globe trotting local athletes. Joe had a chance to talk with Sasha Brafman who will be playing for Brazil in the Maccabiah Games in Israel. Elliott brings us up to date on local youth baseball. Lorenzo discusses Lompoc High graduate Julian Araujo and his recent trip to Japan to play for the U.S. National Soccer Team. The team talks about the recent loss of Noah Scott to leukemia.
