In one way or another, economy touches almost everything in a world. Even without currency or capitalism in the sense that we currently know it, the idea of obligations and repayment exert pressure on society. So how can we make interesting worldbuilding choices when it comes to money, debt, gain, and other aspects of economy? Guest Elizabeth Bear joins us to explore the options! Where does money intersect with other kinds of power and privilege? What's the income equality or inequality like -- what conflict is there between the haves and have-nots? How much opportunity is there for mobility between classes? Even issues as simple as currency are worth interrogation: What is your currency made from? There's a reason many societies have always used copper, silver, and gold -- but others use things like shells or polished stones. Then, of course, there are things like faery markets and the stock market, both of which operate on the trade of abstract nouns. So how can you make these choices for the world you're building in a way that serves the story you're telling? [Transcript for Episode 158] Our Guest: Elizabeth Bear was born on the same day as Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, but in a different year. She is the Hugo, Sturgeon, Locus, and Astounding Award winning author of dozens of novels; over a hundred short stories; and a number of essays, nonfiction, and opinion pieces for markets as diverse as Popular Mechanics and The Washington Post. She lives in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts with her spouse, writer Scott Lynch.

Without getting to Jargon-ey, our guest Gregory Thomas and yours truly explored where and how we in the private sector and within institutions can support the journey from on-the-shelf research to marketplace success. Gregory is The Executive Director and Lecturer for the Berthiaume Center for Entrepreneurship, Isenberg School University of Massachusetts Amherst. How do we best access ideas in financial modeling, management and tech transfer so, in the end, we're building an economy that is better at creating well-paying, meaningful work? These are the themes of our conversation this hour. At SMGraves Associates, we've joined up with Living Local 413 to develop a series of mixed-use properties in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts as desirable locations for tech and tech enabled entrepreneurs to live, work and find important resources through our programming including access to venture capital, accelerators and top-tier mentors. Are you down to a handful of foods and screaming, "I don't know what to eat!"Now, we're not minimizing food sensitivities or allergies. I've got several severe ones myself, yet in my years of doing the show and meeting many in the autoimmune world, I've noticed a fair share, without testing, have thrown out whole food groups to the point where they are only eating a handful of foods — which is not healthy either. Look, our nutrition needs are individual and nuanced. That's why I invited Amanda Mittman, MS, RDN, LDN, and founder of Happy Valley Nutrition, to help us explore why so many of those diagnosed with autoimmunity have disorganized, disordered eating patterns and many foods, including multiple food groups, are on their 'no-no' lists… Amanda gets it. Her teen and early adult 'food rules' were neither attainable, sustainable, or, most importantly, healthy. Those 'food rules' led her to be diagnosed with disordered eating and orthorexia. (I've heard about other eating disorders, such as anorexia, yet I was unfamiliar with orthorexia. Orthorexia can be best described as an 'unhealthy focus on eating in a healthy way.')Amanda reclaimed her relationship with food and has made it her calling to help others develop better relationships with themselves and what they eat. We explore a range of subjects, including negative mindsets that sustain disorganized, disordered eating and• How to know if you have a fear of food(s), • When does 'healthy' eating become unhealthy,• How food fears, shame spirals, and grief keep us stuck,• Why you should "un-indoctrinate your thinking that good health and a distinct body type are one in the same," plus so much more...More About Our Guest: Amanda Mittman, MS, RDN, LDN, the founder of Happy Valley Nutrition, shared, "I know I am not alone. That's why I invited Amanda Mittman, MS, RDN, LDN, and founder of Happy Valley Nutrition, to help us explore why so many of those diagnosed with autoimmunity have disorganized, disordered eating patterns and many foods, including multiple food groups, are on their ‘no-no' lists…Amanda gets it. Her teen and early adult ‘food rules' were neither attainable, sustainable, or, most importantly, healthy. Those ‘food rules' led her to be diagnosed with disordered eating and orthorexia. (I've heard about other eating disorders, such as anorexia, yet I was unfamiliar with orthorexia. Orthorexia can be best described as an ‘unhealthy focus on eating in a healthy way.')Amanda reclaimed her relationship with food and has made it her calling to help others develop better relationships with themselves and what they eat. We explore a range of subjects, including negative mindsets that sustain disorganized, disordered eating and• How to know if you have a fear of food(s),• When does ‘healthy' eating become unhealthy,• How food fears, shame spirals, and grief keep us stuck,• Why you should “un-indoctrinate your thinking that good health and a distinct body type are one in the same,” plus so much more…More About Our Guest:Amanda Mittman, MS, RDN, LDN, the founder of Happy Valley Nutrition, shared, “I know I am not alone. I am not the only person who has suffered the effects of shame and personal deprivation at the expense of the parts of my life that are truly important and bring me joy.” She has committed her practice to help people who have been through the wringer and are searching for an alternative way to live a fuller life without shame and self-abuse. Her company Happy Valley Nutrition brings compassionate, trauma-informed, weight-inclusive care to the Pioneer Valley (aka “Happy Valley”), Massachusetts, and beyond!Learn more at https://www.happyvalleynutrition.com/This show is not intended to diagnose, prevent, or treat autoimmune diseases or other illnesses. FUENTE: REUTERS
