Tim Cates sits down with longtime high school basketball coach and current Mater Dei HS Athletic Director Kevin Kiernan. Over his coaching career he has won 900 games, 12 CIF-SS titles, 6 CIF-State championshps and 2 National Championships in girls basketball. Kevin helped build the girls basketball program at Troy HS and has spent the last 17 years at Mater Dei where in 2024 he was named the WBCA National GBB HS Coach of the Year. Kevin has had many players go on to play college basketball and has seen several former players make it to the WNBA. Since 2021, Kevin has been serving as Athletic Director at Mater Dei, overseeing one of the biggest brands in high school sports.

He's finishing his 17th season at Mater Dei. He's won three state titles at Mater Dei, six Southern Section titles, six regional titles and 17 straight Trinity League titles. Just days before his last CIF Championships (and high school meet) ever, Loyola senior Rex Maurer sat down with SwimSwam to give an insider's look at his last two weeks. Last Friday at the CIF-SS champs, after contracting the flu and being bed-ridden for 2+ days, Maurer clocked a personal best in the 200 free (1:33.57) while winning the 500 free in 4:12.70, a new national high school record. Maurer looks to carry his momentum into this week's CIF Champs, where Loyola is seeded to win the meet and repeat as champions.
Tim Cates talks with CIF-SS Assistant Commissioner Kristine Palle. After being a standout swimmer and water polo player, Kristine returned to Mission Viejo HS as a teacher and coach. She quickly elevated into a role as Athletic Director with the Diablos. For the past 16 years Kristine has been helping run high school sports at the CIF-SS office. Kristine has a Masters in Coaching and Athletics Administration from Concordia University Irvine and currently teaches classes in the program.
Tim Cates talks with Rainer Wulf about his 30 years in education and coaching here in Southern California. He was a CIF SS Coach of the Year at Trabuco Hills HS. As athletic director he was instrumental in hiring some of the great football coaches in the area. For the last 15 years Rainer has been the Assistant Commissioner of the CIF SS. Since 2009 he has been teaching at Concordia University Irvine and their Masters in Coaching and Athletics Administration Program.

Prior to taking over at Beaumont in 2018, Steinberg served as the head coach at Rancho Verde, where he posted a 33-8 record over three seasons that included back-to-back CIF-SS semifinal appearances in 2015 and 2016 and a Division 3 title in 2017. The playoffs are here and we saw a bunch of really great games on Tuesday and are preparing for more great action later in the week. Lompoc and St. Joseph played a classic on the softball diamond, and the Braves were able to get a walkoff win on the baseball field. Nipomo swimming brought home the first CIF title to the Central Coast for the Spring season and several teams are preparing for their first taste of the postseason. Cabrillo was eliminated on Tuesday, but St. Joseph plays later this week along with Santa Ynez. How will the Knights and the Pirates fare in their matchups? The Rodeo is only two weeks away and Elliott Stern can hardly wait! He will talk about he schedule of events and lay out some of our upcoming coverage for the 75th Annual Elk's Rodeo. The Lompoc Valley is no stranger to college signings but two recent ones could start a new trend, wrestling. Conner Hayes and Lesly Hernandez signed their letters of intent this week, Lorenzo Reyna was their and he fills you in with the details. And finally the CIF-SS Track and Field prelims were last weekend and Kenny Cress was able to catch up with the field to talk about their performances, and we get you ready for this weekend's meet. The Righetti girls were believed to be destined for a finals run, but a home semifinal playoff game was the last game of the year for the Warriors. What went wrong, and will they get to play on in the state playoffs? Santa Maria boys lost a heart breaker in La Puente to end their season, what happened to cost the Saints a spot in a CIF final. And, Lompoc's boys had the only home playoff game last weekend and they also fell to their opponent, possibly ending their season. Will any of these teams get a state playoff birth, despite a loss in the playoffs?
