Our first episode of 2025 is a fantastic interview with author Chris Whitaker. As well as speaking about his writing career and the importance of being a reader, we chat about his newest bestseller All the Colours of the Dark; you do not have to have read the book, but there are some references to the storyline - these may be minor spoilers to some, but we are confident they don't impact a new reader's enjoyment of the novel.Chris Whitaker is the author of the New York Times and Sunday Times bestselling All The Colours Of The Dark. His other acclaimed and bestselling novels include We Begin At The End, Tall Oaks, and All The Wicked Girls. Chris's novels have been translated into thirty languages and have won the CWA Gold Dagger, the CWA John Creasey Dagger, the Theakston Crime Novel of the Year, the Ned Kelly International Award, and numerous awards around the world. His books have also been selected for the Read With Jenna Book Club, Waterstones Thriller of the Month, Barnes & Noble Book Club, Good Morning America Book Club, and for BBC2's Between The Covers. All The Colours Of The Dark is currently in development with Universal Pictures. This week we visited the cinema to see the highly-anticipated "Small Things Like These". Based on the novella by Claire Keegan, it tells the story of Bill Furlong, a coal man in New Ross, Wexford, "As he does the rounds, he feels the past rising up to meet him - and encounters the complicit silences of a small community controlled by the Church. Claire Keegan's tender tale of hope and quiet heroism is both a celebration of compassion and a stern rebuke of the sins committed in the name of religion."Hear our chat before we go in, based on having read the book previously and how we felt immediately after coming out. There are some minor spoilers, so be mindful of this.At the end of the episode, we also include a list of recommended readings on the topic (and similar issues), which Aoife Cassidy compiled for us when we spoke to her in season 1. - - -Thanks to Helen Becerra for the artwork and Mark Neville for the mixing.Music from #Uppbeat (free for Creators!):https://uppbeat.io/t/all-good-folks/make-it-work License code: PLGGIGEZMJI9NR3G and https://uppbeat.io/t/all-good-folks/funky-junkLicense code: BZFZTXSSQI4PW6NW ---Follow us on Instagram and TikTok: @another.chapter.podcastVisit our website www.anotherchapterpodcast.ie Hosted on Acast. In Chapter 8 Claire and Rebecca sit down and delve a bit deeper into the world of non-fiction. Why do we read non-fiction? What constitutes non-fiction? And why do we not read as much non-fiction when we compare it to the amount of fiction we consume? When we were brainstorming who we could invite to be our first author interview, we had a short list of criteria: We wanted an Irish author, someone who had a book recently released, and someone who we could have a bit of craic with and this lady came straight to mind. Catherine Walsh is the new queen of contemporary Romance in Ireland (and elsewhere if the reviews are anything to go by!) and one of the funnest accounts to follow on Bookstagram. Fun aside, Catherine raises some really excellent points about the lack of visibility and respect for Romance as a genre and we suspect you might think a bit differently about it after you've heard her speak… Both the author and her books have been an absolute joy to get to know and we hope you love the episode as much as we do. Catherine's Recommendations A book to get into reading or get back into reading after a slump Do a re-read of an old favourite Who are your go-to authors? Sinéad Cuddihy was the first person we both wanted to interview in a bookish podcast. Why? Because she runs the Tired Mammy Book Club and has encouraged us both to pick up a book and get back into reading at a time when we needed that little push of encouragement. Sinéad's monthly book club, which is not just for mammies btw, has brought some wonderful books into our lives and has connected us to some of the loveliest people on this little corner of the internet. Sinéad never fails to amaze us with her ability to have a job, be a mammy, run a household, AND run a hugely successful online book club on top of it all! Her levels of organisation are inspirational and to top it all off she's fairly sound too! So, throw the kettle on, grab a cuppa - bonus points if it's a TMBC mug - and relax to this episode of Another Chapter. Sinéad's Recommendations Reading Slump Advice Just let it happen!
