Dr. Kerry Kerr McAvoy was already 20 years into her career as a psychologist with an academic education in narcissistic behaviors and counseling sessions with countless couples trying to navigate relationships through toxic narcissism. Still, her true education in narcissism didn't happen until she married a man with a God complex — a narcissist. "I definitely saw narcissists in my practice, and I'm sure I saw narcissistically abusive relationships, but I just didn't know what I was seeing at the time because that's not something they talk about in graduate school. They don't talk about the consequences of living with a toxic individual."  In this conversation, Terry not only shares events from her nightmare marriage that resulted in her best-selling memoir,  Love You More, and her popular podcast, "Breaking Free from Narcissistic Abuse," she also shares red flags women can look for when dating to hopefully avoid the pain and misery she unfortunately learned the hard way.

The filmmaker, artist, and writer Miranda July has worked across such a variety of media over the years, one might say it is almost hard to categorize her work. But there is actually a strong through line that emerges when you consider July's vast oeuvre: an interest in how the remarkable may occur in small everyday moments and interactions—an interest in loneliness, sexuality, and death, and needing each other in our capacity to change and love—all these aspects that really make us human. With this, July has built a diverse and awe-inspiring body of work. It includes a messaging app she developed called Somebody and an interfaith secondhand shop. Her art has been on view with the Venice Biennale, and she's also made three feature length films, two of which she starred in. She's published four books and a participatory website called Learning to Love You More that she created with American artist Harold Fletcher that consists of assignments for the general public who make the art. There are instructions like "make a portrait of your friend's desires," or "perform the phone call someone else wishes they could have." One of these assignments is part of her first solo exhibition, a major retrospective on view at Fondazione Prada in Milan until the end of October. It is "Assignment 43: Make an exhibition of the art in your parents' house," and it was completed by a local woman from Milan. It is one piece among many in a show that spans 30 years of July's practice. There is also a new participatory video series in the mix called F.A.M.I.L.Y (Falling Apart Meanwhile I Love You). Her newest novel, All Fours was published in May this year. A New York Times bestseller and long list finalist for the National Book Award, All Fours is an astonishingly candid look at sexuality and transformation, but also at an extremely underrepresented topic in literature: menopause and female aging. When I connected with July, she was in her home, which is also her studio in Los Angeles, a small painting by Louise Bonnet hung just behind her. It's called Miranda, and it's a contemplative portrait of a female figure in what looks like a state of metamorphosis. It suits July's universe quite poetically.

I'm bringing back one of my most impactful conversations with psychologist and writer Dr. Kerry Kerr McAvoy about healing from narcissistic relationships. We unpack the challenges of being in a relationship with someone who has narcissistic personality disorder, the profound impact it can have on your emotional and mental well-being, and actionable strategies for self-nurturing after the relationship ends. We also take a closer look at the common phrase “it takes two to tango” and what it means in the context of unhealthy relationships. If you're healing from a toxic relationship or want to gain clarity on what healthy love looks like, listen to this episode again or tune in for the first time. What you'll hear: We explore the phrase “It takes two to tango…” Does it, though, when narcissistic abuse or toxicity is involved in a relationship?  Is there anything that you can do to help a narcissistic and abusive partner? The short answer is no.  Narcissistic Personality is a disorder. It's not a mental health condition. Kerry explains the distinction.  Focusing on and nurturing yourself back to life is essential in a relationship that has dimmed you.  Learn more about Kerry McAvoy: Kerry Kerr McAvoy is a psychologist and a writer who educates on social media about cultivating healthy relationships, deconstructing narcissism, and understanding various other mental health-related issues. Dr. Kerry McAvoy was a busy mom, wife, and psychologist when her world was devasted by the death of her first husand. When she was finally able to come up for air, she met a new man who was everything she wanted in a partner.  Just months after the wedding, she woke up to a text from a woman she didn't know: “I guess the joke is not just on me but on you, too. I've been dating your husband.”  Her world was shattered. Still in love with her new husband, she chose not to leave. Instead, she spent the next two years fruitlessly and desperately trying to fix what was broken. Despite being a psychologist, Kerry had never heard the term "narcissistic abuse." She didn't realize she'd been love-bombed, and was now being manipulated and gaslighted. Married to a man whose personality vacillated between good guy and monster, Kerry was left strung out and confused. She became so desperate that she briefly considered ending her life.  When her son became ill, Kerry saw her chance to leave her marriage and escape the hellscape she'd been living in.  Kerry's goal now is to help others gain clarity and heal after narcissistic abuse. She wrote a book, Love You More, and took to TikTok where she created a 29-part video series on her experience of marriage to a malignant narcissist. This series, as well as her other videos about toxic relationships, have garnered over 18 million likes.

As part of the so-called Britart generation of the early 1990's, artist Sam Taylor-Wood, as she was then known, made her name with photographic and video pieces. Diagnosed with colon cancer in 1997, and then breast cancer three years later, she addressed her treatment and recovery in artworks she made at the time. She moved into filmmaking with her first feature Nowhere Boy, about the life of the young John Lennon in 2009. Other cinematic projects have included adaptations of the E L James novel 50 Shades Of Gray, the James Frey memoir A Million Little Pieces and, most recently, the Amy Winehouse biopic Back To Black.Sam tells John Wilson about the experience of first seeing the Rothko Seagram paintings at the Tate gallery when she was nine years old, and the impact that they had on her in her creative imagination. Being introduced to Andy Warhol films such as Chelsea Girls and Empire made her realise that art and cinema are deeply intertwined and went on to influence her style as a director. John Cassavetes' A Woman Under the Influence was the first film that made Sam want to be a cinematic filmmaker and she also reveals how Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella encouraged her to make her debut short film Love You More. I love cover songs. On last week's mixtape I did all Joy Division - New Order Covers to celebrate the release of the double A 7” release from Numero Group featuring Bedhead and Codeine delivering personal favorite Joy Division covers. You can check it out at the Face Radio Archives page, or at my MattPapeWorldy Mixcloud page. Covers are so much fun, discovering favorite songs reimagined, or favorite artists taking on other people's work, whether it be faithful renditions or complete shifts. So I'm thrilled to start a new series in the Matt Pape Mixtape collection - Pull The Covers Off The Lovers. For the first edition of this I'm featuring the exclusive broadcast of Hudson Palace's Tattoo - a cover of the Who song. You heard it first folks!Hudson Palace started out as a Covid dating survival tactic: date nights between Tony Fletcher and Paula Lucas, a new couple with nowhere to go. Figuring that one of them could play guitar and the other could sing, they started working their way through the many songbooks they owned and beyond, seeking uncommon musical ground. When Tony found himself rewriting Buzzcocks' power pop punk classic "Love You More" as an acoustic ballad in 3/4, a project was properly born, the arrangement was recorded, released in early 2023, and followed by a second acoustic Buzzcocks cover, "Love Is Lies."Now, a year down the line, Paula and Tony are about to unveil another themed pair of cover versions, these of mid-60s Who songs. The Who Sell Out's "Tattoo" from 1967 comes first, on Feb 29, followed around a month later by the previous year's 45 "I'm A Boy." The songs sit together thematically in that they deal with the gender confusion Pete Townshend articulated with such wit during this period - wit that takes on new meaning when sung by a woman. Both Hudson Palace interpretations have a somewhat "baroque" feeling to them, and though there are still no drums, they each have considerably more parts than the Buzzcocks covers. All instruments by Tony, recorded in Kingston, NY, and mixed by Noel Fletcher.Oh yeah, also featuring Nico, Badly Drawn Boy, Angel Olsen, Galaxie 500, The Jam, Billy Bragg, Cat Power and loads more. Enjoy. Tune into new broadcasts of Matt Pape Mixtape, Friday from 12 - 1 AM EST / 5 - 6 AM GMTFor more info visit: https://thefaceradio.com/matt-pape-mixtape///Dig this show? In today's devotional, we're going to explore the desire we all share to be passionate. Everyone of us desires to give our lives to something, our passion to something that truly matters. And God has given us all that desire with a perfect plan to satisfy it in a unique way, a way he's perfectly wired each of us for. May each of us get a greater sense of how we can live more wholeheartedly in him today.   The main concept for this week is derived from The Seven Longings of the Human Heart by Mike Bickle and Deborah Hiebert. Our Scripture for today comes from Mark 12:30, and today's worship is Love You More by Harvest Bashta.   -- We are so excited to announce our very first First15 Kids Advent Devotional book, Jesus, the Light of the World.  And you can get a copy for your children or grandchildren today! Jesus, the Light of the World is a 25 day devotional written for young readers, ages 6-12. Intended to be started on December 1st, each day of this 25 day devotional includes scriptures, activities, and prayers to help growing believers learn how Jesus was the light that came to heal and save a hurting and broken world.  This resource is foundational, answering questions such as,  Who is Jesus? Why was Jesus born? How does it matter in my life today? “God is a good Father who gives good and perfect gifts. God is also a Father who speaks truth to us! When he tells us the truth, he wants us to trust and believe him even when it's hard. When we trust God's word even when it feels hard, it's called faith. Faith is a gift God gives us, and the amazing thing is, we can always ask God for more.” Request your copy of First15's new kids advent devotional, Jesus, the Light of the World, today by going to supportfirst15.org, and help your kids explore spending time with God each and every day! How does it feel to come from a family with a legend? If you're today's guest, novelist and playwright Esther Freud (daughter of painter Lucian Freud and great granddaughter of Sigmund Freud) you work with that legacy to produce some of the finest novels of the last thirty years. Her first Hideous Kinky, based on her unusual childhood, was made into a film starring Kate Winslet and after the follow-up, Peerless Flats, she was named one of Granta's Best Young Novelists. Scroll forward a couple of decades and her ninth novel, I Couldn't Love You More, comes full circle, this time exploring aspects of her family's history through the lens of three generations of mothers. (Bring tissues!)Over the next 40 minutes Esther talks candidly about motherhood, guilt, shame, the way women are constantly judged, her own entangled family history, how the onset of menopause made her question everything and why now 57 she's happier than ever. CONTENT WARNING: There's some conversation about forced adoption and Ireland's mother and baby homes that some people may find upsetting. You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including the book that accompanies this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too by Sam Baker and I Couldn't Love You More by Esther Freud. The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Emily Sandford.
