OR maybe you are looking for a place away from kids and responsibilities where nothing else but the words in front of you are vying for your attention.  If any of these apply, then a Silent Book Club might be for you.  Silent Book Club began in 2012 and is, according to their mission statement, a “global community of readers, with more than 1500 chapters in 54 countries around the world led by local volunteers. SBC members gather in public at bars, cafes, bookstores, libraries, and online to read together in quiet camaraderie.”     This week we chat with Brittany Brar, the leader of a local chapter of the Silent Book Club in Louisville, Kentucky.  Brittany started the local chapter here in 2019, right before the pandemic with 5 people.  She was new in town and didn't know where to find a booklcub to join.  Now the group has over 2000 members of their FB group and as many as 60 people have shown up to their monthly meetings. Brittany talks to us about how people have developed a new sense of community, when a powerpoint presentation can be regarded as fun, and her go-to  genres   After our chat with Brittany, we will give you our recommendations for big honking books that meet not only your reading but also strength training goals.    Books Mentioned In This Episode: 1- Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe   2- The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman   3- Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma by Claire Dederer   4- Rakesfall by Vajra Chandrasekera   5- The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson   6- Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson   7- That's Not My Name by Megan Lally   8- Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry   9- It by Stephen King   10- Leviathan Wakes by SA Corey (592 pages)    11-The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (704 pages)    12- Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin (944 pages) 13- Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett  (976 pages)    14- Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver (546 pages)    15- When the World Tips Over by Jandy Nelson (528 pages)   16- East of Eden by John Steinbeck (601 pages)   17- A Five Star Read Recommended By Fellow Book Lover Kim Wells @the_salty_islander - A Home for Friendless Women by Kelly E. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Michele Cobb discuss how this performance by a five-narrator cast is truly special. The Fall children harness unique powers. When a magical rainbow-haired girl reveals her connection with the family, it kicks off a whirlwind of secrets that will either break them apart or further unite them. What's more magical is the gorgeous concoction of every narrator's style. It genuinely feels like each character is a complete story on their own, but when blended together, they create a symphony of mystery, challenges, and compelling world-building. When auditioning for the movie adaptation of Jandy Nelson's YA novel, The Sky is Everywhere, Grace Kaufman had no idea she beat out hundreds of other actresses for the role. Born and raised in Los Angeles, Grace has been acting since the age of seven and was on the heels of graduating high school when she learned she landed the leading part. The book, which came out in 2010, has a cult following and is one of the young adult genre's most beloved stories, following high school student Lennie as she navigates the loss of her eldest sister, all while experiencing the joys of young adulthood and first love. In this episode, Grace tells us what it's like experiencing a break out role at the age of 19 and how she brought a beloved character to life. We also talk about growing up in Los Angeles, working with Cherry Jones and Jason Segel, and the best acting tips she learned on set.   Watch The Sky Is Everywhere now on Apple TV.   Love the show? As a literary agent early in her career, Jandy Nelson was attracted to “voice-driven work.” A poet and YA reader, she saw a path for herself in the subgenere of verse novel. “That's when I wrote The Sky is Everywhere and fell in love with fiction.” In The Sky is Everywhere, the story follows a shy, teenage musician who tries to keep things together after the death of her older, outgoing sister. Nelson has a solo writing credit for the screenplay. “At first, we tried to make it a movie ten years ago, but ultimately, I realized I wanted to adapt it myself.” To understand this new craft, Nelson read all of 101 books on screenwriting and everything else she could get her hands on. “I found it to be a combination of novels and poetry because it has a strict structure and every word counts.” In this interview, Nelson talks about voice driven work, how to bring out an interior world, why every word counts, why she loves YA, how she invented Lennie-scapes for the film, and how to create leverage with personality-driven work. Hey beautiful Listener! We're back with Part 2 of The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. Gah! It's so beautiful! In the second half we get to see these two crazy kids get together, break up, and come back to each other. And a ton of this occurs on a whimsical forest bed!  Bonus Content: doodles, more HS band hot takes, the logistics of a forest bed, cathartically slashing up a battered copy of Wuthering Heights, Tennessee Williams, and Jandy's follow up to this novel: a standalone thriller about a criminally voyeuristic innkeeper. Look, when we come up with ideas, they're just GOLD.  Lady Loves:  Melody: I got a NEW BRA!  Erin: Find the corner of tiktok where you get thirst videos of old-timey men. Maybe try #paulnewman or #marlonbrando and teach the algorithm to treat you right.  Episode sponsor: Sierra Simone's SAINT, the third full-length standalone in the PRIEST universe. It comes out on 9/7/2021. She promises more angst, more red hot sex, and more elevating the profane to the sacred than ever before! And if you're a Heaving Bosoms patron at the $10 tier and up, you get a free advance copy!  Check out The Rosecast! It's one of Melody's favorite podcasts recapping the Bachelor franchise. These long-distance best friends give me big HB vibes, if you replace our raunchy shenanigans with two sports-loving, good dudes.  Patreon Shout Out:  Andi M., you are descended from Lilith, one of the most ancient mystical figures in Judeo-Christian lore. She's now known as the dark moon goddess in astrology and is associated with uncontrollable feminine vitality. Andi, you're respected and revered in part because Lilith has always been so feared by the patriarchy. Anyone that ancient men deem demonic, I see as a badass of antiquity who had to be vilified lest she overpower them. So, you continue owning your sexuality, relying on the prudence and wisdom of your intuition, and being courageous in your demands of the world. That's all Lilith asks.  Subscribe! Rate! Review! Hey HBs! We're here with one of the most beautifully crafted books we've ever read. YA romance The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson is a gorgeous story of grief and young love. It's also time machine that had us reliving all the ridiculousness that is being a teenager. So, set those vague AIM away messages and strap in for a squee session!  CW: death of a sibling, navigating grief, and loss of a pregnancy.  Also CW for Erin's SCALDING hot takes on different instrument players. Sorry, French Horns. Lady Loves:  Melody: The strawberries and blueberries I'm currently eating!  Erin: Gah..... it's hard over here. Sometimes there isn't a lady love. Episode Sponsor: Penelope's Paths by Isabelle Peterson Patreon Shout Out: Robin J, you are descended from Fauna, the roman goddess of woodlands, fields, flocks, and... fertility, which makes me think there's some freak in there, too. Fauna was goddess to all creatures on earth, and if you've watched Netflix's Absurd Planet documentary, you'll know that's both awe-inspiring, and truly, hilariously entertaining. Many forget, however, that she was also the goddess of prophecy, and that wisdom has served you and your loved ones well. Subscribe! Rate! Review! Hablamos de una novela llena de arte, diversidad, bellísimas metáforas y personajes que nos enamoraron. Si todavía no conocés "Te daría el mundo" (I'll Give You the Sun) de Jandy Nelson, te lo super recomendamos. This episode is sponsored by Jamie Sands. Jamie is a non-binary kiwi who’s always been wondering ‘what if’? They write stories about ghosts, monsters, love, and how the world could be. Jamie grew up in Wellington but now lives in Auckland with a wonderful woman and a round cat. The Suburban Book of the Dead No one expected the last night of the Summer holidays to be deadly. Rain and her best friends Rachel and Jackie head to the carnival. Rain's plan was to chat up Jake, who runs the Ferris Wheel, and maybe get a kiss or two. But then Rachel's killed in mysterious circumstances, and none of them will ever be the same again. When Rachel returns as a ghost insisting Rain find out who killed her and why, she turns to Jake, who knows more than he seems to. In fact, he's encountered weird stuff like ghosts and monsters before. So now she just has to grieve for a friend who she's still talking to, try not to fall deeper in love with Jake, keep her family off her back, decide who to trust, infiltrate the funfair and find Rachel's killer. Jenn and guest Eric Smith discuss all things young adult in this week's episode of Get Booked! This episode is sponsored by Landscape With Invisible Hand by M.T. Anderson, The Golden House by Salman Rushdie, and A Conspiracy in Belgravia by Sherry Thomas.   Questions 1. I have a feeling you guys are going to look down on me for this, but one of my favorite things to read about is rich people (mainly teenagers and young adults) and their problems. I'm not really sure why, but I really like that. I think I like looking at worlds that are supposed to be 'perfect' and glimpsing into all the terrible things going on beneath the surface. The Secret History for example, is my favorite book of all time, and I think that encapsulates what I love perfectly. Intellectual (and snooty), pretty rich kids, with LOTS of issues (and murder!). I tried reading We Were Liars, and I didn't dislike it, but I just forgot about it and never finished it. Sometimes I have that problem with YA fiction, I can never say what I don't like about a lot of the books, but I just can't make myself finish them a lot of the time. --Camilla   2. Hi there! I am currently obsessing over the TV show "How To Get Away With Murder" and I was wondering if you had book recommendations for fans of the show? I'm particularly interested / looking for a book that has a diverse set of characters, smart/academic poc adults or young adults (of different ethnic backgrounds, sexualities, etc.) who share a professional and personal relationship. It doesn't have to be murder related, but maybe a cool plot that brings them all together. Thanks and keep doing whatcha doing, love this podcast! :) --Joanna   3. I am in a YA book club for adults. I've loved many of the "1st in a series" books we've read, but the number of sequels on our TBR lists keep adding up as we move onto other selections. Can you recommend some stand-alone YA books for the group? We've already read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, The Darkest Part of the Forest, Ready Player One, We Were Liars, Paper Towns, and Imaginary Girls. Bonus points for male main character or POV. Thanks! --Christine   4. I'm looking for YA recommendations for my 13-year old daughter who is dealing with an anxiety disorder. She is a good reader with a strong feminist bent, and likes well-written realistic fiction with quirky characters. So many YA novels seem to deal with pretty heavy subjects, (suicide, a sibling or parent's death, dystopian futures, etc.) and those are not great for her right now. Favorite authors have included Rainbow Rowell and Jandy Nelson. Recently she has read Everything, Everything and Simon vs the Homosapiens Agenda and enjoyed them both. Any suggestions? Thanks! --Helen   5. Dear Jenn and Amanda, My younger sister (12) has never been much of a reader, and I've recently decided I wanted to try and find her some books to help her get into reading. She's read and loved Harry Potter and A Series of Unfortunate Events when she was younger. Recently I gave her my old copy of Inkheart and she absolutely loved it. She's reading the sequel right now, but when she finishes the series I'd love to have some books to recommend her right after, while she's still in the spirit of reading. I feel like 12 is a weird age because your not quite old enough for YA and a little too old for middle grade, and when I was her age I was reading Dickens. So as you can see I'm way out of my element here, as I don't think giving Dickens to a reluctant reader is a good idea. Please please please help! --Taylor   6. I'm in my mid-twenties and read a lot of YA fiction. I tend to struggle with adult fiction as I feel I can't relate to some of the characters. I'm always looking for books with characters closer to my age, though they seem to be few and far between. I've enjoyed books with characters in this age range such as Attachments by Rainbow Rowell (I love all her books), The Royal We by Heather Cocks, Someday Someday Maybe by Lauren Graham, Brooklyn by Colm Toibin, Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, and The Help by Kathryn Stockett. I'd like to start branching out into more adult fiction. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! --Joslyn   7. Hi Amanda and Jenn! I am working on my Master's in Education and am currently in a class about students of diverse backgrounds. You Book Riot ladies and Jeff must live in my head because every discussion the class has about how to make the curriculum more inclusive or your classroom more welcoming to all people, I always say, "Have books about people who are like them in your room". I know you all understand the importance of showing kids that people like them did or are doing cool or important things so they believe that they can too. I plan to teach high school biology and I was wondering if you could give me some recommendations for books about biologists who are not already part of the science cannon a.k.a. the rich, white, sometimes Christian men. I am not 100% sure on the grade level I will be teaching and may teach 7th grade life science, so a mix of middle level, YA, and adult would be nice. Thank you so much for helping me to add to my TBR list and I look forward to hearing your recommendations. --Bobbi   8. I have a friend with a 12-year-old daughter who fell in love with shapeshifter fantasy after reading Twilight. In her quest to find more shapeshifter novels (with a little romance), she's ventured into some territory that's a little more adult than her mom is comfortable with. Can you recommend any YA shapeshifter novels for her? I read a lot of YA, but haven't read many that fit the bill. Another friend recommended Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater, but I'm sure there are others out there. Thanks! --Stacy   Books The End of the World Running Club by Adrian J.
