Episode 49 (09/01/25) On this episode - A run down of some of the biggest fails of 2024 (in entertainment, politics and everything else), Greg talks about some of his Xmas presents and his new year's resolution to be a bit more stoic, some famous philosophical approaches to seeing in the new year, an improvised audition for Riverdance, a woman that was ironically duped by the Keanu Reeves romance scam, some incredibly bad impressions of celebrities that have lost their houses in the LA fires, quarter life crises vs midlife crises, young people vs the Reform Party, attempts to hum and scat the University Challenge theme tune, refusing to watch Traitors, the Beast Games on Amazon Prime, 100 year old predictions for the year 2025, Shane Ward and The Good ship Murder, films to look out for in 2025, our weekly improvised soap opera ‘Aylesbury Market', Jordan Peterson's ideal Dr Who, recommendations, Future Greg and a whole lot more!
It was the wise prophet and occasional flower impersonator Peter Gabriel that said, ‘I don't remember, I don't recall,I have no memory of anything at all.'Do you remember 2008?Yes, it's only (!) 16 years ago, so I've no doubt you still have packets in the kitchen cupboard that are older, but do you also remember how the pop landscape of 2008 was mapping out? Indeed, what on earth was going on in your life eight years into the 21st century? You see, this writer (it's, me IAIN!) has quite a glitchy view back of his shoulder to this year. Life had thrown a few curveballs (listen in, it's kinda revealed) meaning that pop memory has become patchy. Perhaps for you, dear listeners, 2008 is similarly harder to initially grasp hold of. Fear not! The world's finest compilation series (as always) is on hand to jog memories, restart downloads an piece together for us what was selling, streaming, rising and falling up and down the hit parade that we call “The Charts'. It's NOW, That's What I Call Music 69!And crikey, what a mix we had!Torchsongs, soul songs, Neo-soul songs, Soul-dance songs, Northern soul songs! Songs that weren't soul soul songs but would like to be!Big pop statements from Britney, Robyn, Girls Aloud!Slightly smaller pop statements from Shane Ward and Leon Jackson! We also had some huge ghosts of pop pasts resurfacing thanks to the likes of Rihanna, Duffy, Kylie and others. And some iconic artists that would stay with us through some era defining tracks. Because sometimes pop is the only thing that helps us when things aren't OK (but will be OK). Our special guest for this episode is author of the frankly wonderful Don't Stop the Music - A Year of Pop History, One Day at a Time, and lifetime pop fan Justin Lewis.AND, if all of this wasn't enough (and don't forget Basshunter is in there too), find out where Joe Fagin fits in, who the Kajagoogoo of NOW69 is, which group may (or may not) have their own day time quiz show, how Justin grew up with Tom and Annie on Radio One and grew back in love with music in 2008 through some of these songs, and also which tracks deserve 10 out of 10. And of course, why pop is still so important for making sense of the world around us, in any decade! All of this, and I've managed not to say anything negative about Scouting for Girls!Oh no, wait… Hosted on Acast. Eighty-nine years ago today, one of America's greatest — though least-known — blues artists died after months of illness. Gaunt and frail, Arthur Blake — known to blues aficionados by his stage name, “Blind Blake” — must have looked much older at the end than his 38 years. It had been a wild and sometimes wonderful decade for him. Starting in mid-1920s, he was celebrated as Paramount Records' sensational guitarist, whose distinctive playing often was compared to the sound and style of a ragtime piano.InfluencesHis intricate finger-picking was to inspire generations of guitarists, from Rev. Gary Davis to Ralph McTell, from Leon Redbone to Ry Cooder and John Fahey.Famously, blues great Big Bill Broonzy, who heard Blake in person in the early 1920s, said Arthur made his guitar “sound like every instrument in the band — saxophone, trombone, clarinets, bass fiddles, pianos, everything. I never had seen then and I haven't to this day yet seen no one that could take his natural fingers and pick as much guitar as Blind Blake."The CrashBlake recorded about 80 tracks between 1926 and 1932. His future looked bright. With his records selling well, he felt he could settle down, so he married Beatrice McGee around 1931. But then the next year it all went bad. Paramount went bankrupt in 1932 under the weight of the Great Depression. In the remaining two years of his life, Arthur Blake was plagued by poverty and by illness. A coroner's autopsy confirmed that his Dec. 1, 1934, death came because of complications from tuberculosis. The SongToday Blind Blake's legacy lives on in his recordings and through their impact on nearly a century of blues, folk and jazz musicians who travel in his shadow. In 1992, for instance, Bob Dylan honored Blake in the title of his Good as I Been to You album, on which he performed a cover of "You Gonna Quit Me Blues.”Our Take on the TuneAnd that's where The Flood comes in. We started doing the song in the mid-'90s, right after hearing Dylan's version on that album. We were looking for an easy, happy tune that we could warm up with, one that would let everybody in the room just stretch out a little. Nowadays it is just as likely to turn up as a last song of the night — as it does here — putting a bow on a great evening of music. Enjoy.Meanwhile, in Other News…By the way, we're now one month away from our big “Flood at 50” birthday bash on New Year's Eve, and the good folks at Alchemy Theatre who are hosting it have created a Facebook Event page for the do, with all kinds of additional goodies. Welcome back to SSP Weekly! This week, host Miriam Pasternak explores the U.S.'s posture on strategic nuclear deterrence and the concept of 'tripolar deterrence', in light of a recently published Congressional report. Dr. Mount is a senior fellow at the Federation of American Scientists and holds a PhD from the Department of Government at Georgetown University. Earlier this week, he published his article: “A Not-So-Strategic Posture Commission” for the Arms Control Association, which sparked our interest. We hope you enjoy the episode!

The Modern Male Designer. Shane Ward grew up in Detroit, one half of a set of identical twins, and one of seven siblings. By his own account, those streets where he learned to play football were dangerous, but it was there that he gained confidence stemming from a talent for the sport. While caddying for a local golf course in high school, Shane was exposed to all sorts of people and acquired an entirely new set of skills…people skills. After attending and graduating from the University Of Michigan, Shane found himself in Portland, Oregon designing some pretty impressive sneakers for Adidas, where more self-discovery was uncovered. He learned for the first time in his life to appreciate the great outdoors, and still does to this day. Shane went on to design shoes both in-house and freelance for big brands like Puma, Converse, Fila, Rockport, and so many more. He also co- founded, helmed, and designed for DETNY by Shane & Shawn, the men's and women’s shoe collection he created with his twin brother. The line was sold in large stores like Macy's and they opened a stand-alone boutique in the heart of New York’s Nolita. Discovery continues for the true-blue creative. He’s begun painting again, and his large-scale pieces combine his appreciation for both the sneakers that inspire him and elements of nature. Today, Shane is creative director for G111 Apparel Group, in charge of footwear for DNKY men’s, the heritage brand, Bass, and others. Story + Rain founder Tamara has known Shane for a very long time and this podcast reflects that. Shane tells his life story, gets into his career’s trajectory, discusses the things that inspire him, how he sets the scene for creative flow, and brings us into his world of the modern male shoe designer with an extraordinarily unique perspective. The Agricultural Crisis - Shane Ward by Ari in the Air
We chat to Shane Ward about the recently launched Better Futures Forum (BFF), the hot new platform where New Zealanders are meeting to facilitate the transition towards a more resilient Aotearoa. BFF is seizing the transformational power of COVID-19. In just three weeks since it launched, the organization, co-founded by Dr Mike Joy, has received tremendous support with a groundswell of people joining them. They have a focus on six key areas: Land and Water; Infrastructure; Transport; Building and Housing; Energy; and Economy, and are encouraging any interested New Zealanders to join them. We also chat to Shane (international regenerative-agriculture design-consultant, speaker, teacher, writer and founder of Action Ecology) about his vision for NZ's future and get him to explain the powerful impact of regenerative agriculture. Shane is a permaculturalist and agriculture consultant, and talking with him changed some of my perspectives on some big topics. In this episode he outlines that without a permanent system of agriculture, one that is truly sustainable, permanent civilization is impossible. We also talk about human nature and how it is typically misconstrued and weaponized against us. We talk about politicized science, the ecological impact of the coronavirus lockdown, which he argues that it is not big, because our agriculture has not been impeded or reformed in the midst of pandemic. Its an amazing talk I hope you enjoy it. Find Shane at www.actionecology.com Please support this show by sharing, subscribing and by leaving a review! It helps! Answer To Last Week's Trivia Question: Q: Who played the slide guitar on the classic Eric Clapton hit Layla? A: Duane Allman! Both Slau and Mark Rufino had some valuable follow up to this. They referred to a documentary on Tom Dowd called Tom Dowd: The Language Of Music. It's an absolutely fascinating glimpse into the life of a talented and influential engineer and producer. One of the interesting things in the movie is where he plays the original multitrack master from the Layla session and he solos Dunae’s slide and the piano. It’s so exciting to hear the raw material out of context. Slau and Mark both say. "If you haven't seen this, run (don't walk) to the store and pick up a copy."
