First of all, how do we know if it's God's will to answer a prayer or not? If He doesn't answer, should we keep praying? Join us for the first episode of season two of Above the Treeline for an in-depth conversation about prayer.
We watched as “It” came walking into a part clearing. This “Thing” was broad but ‘It' wasn't much taller than us at the time, perhaps only 5/5 ft in height but its body was huge. "It" was hairy and thick with muscle. I remember "It" having a humped back almost, ‘It' was sort of stooped somehow. ‘It' was walking with purpose and then "It" just stopped dead in ‘Its' tracks? At the time my friend and I looked at each other knowing what we were seeing was wordless. Even now I'm struggling to describe what "it" looked like and what it felt like to me standing there looking at "It" and wondering what "It" was going to do next. This week's guest is the CEO and founder of Treeline Cheesemakers, Michael Schwarz. Treeline Cheesemakers is a dairy-free vegan cheese made in upstate New York. We talk about his decision to become vegan in 2011 and how that compelled him to leave his job as a lawyer and build Treeline. Often business leaders speak in platitudes, but this is not one of those interviews. Michael brought conviction, clarity of our moral obligations, and a convincing rationale for why we all should be vegan. We talk about the science behind cashew cheese, how he landed his first clients, and how we all can do our part to stop animal cruelty.

Episode 66 - Jess Get Hired Podcast Summary In this episode of the Jess Get Hired Podcast, host Jessica Fiesta George interviews Dan Fantasia, a sales recruiting expert and founder of Treeline. They discuss the benefits of a career in sales, the qualities of successful salespeople, and how companies can effectively recruit sales professionals. They also explore how businesses can create a positive environment to attract and retain sales talent, and provide tips for job seekers on preparing for sales interviews and standing out in the job market. The conversation emphasizes the importance of understanding the sales model and setting realistic expectations for both employers and job seekers. Takeaways A career in sales offers independence, control over income, and the opportunity to have an entrepreneurial mindset within a larger corporation. Successful salespeople possess qualities such as hard work, accountability, and resilience. When recruiting sales professionals, companies should understand their sales model and identify the specific characteristics required for success in their organization. To foster a positive environment, employers should set realistic goals, understand the needs and wants of their sales team, and communicate effectively. Job seekers can stand out by researching companies, understanding their own story and experiences, and building a daily strategy for networking and job searching. Staying ahead of trends in sales recruitment requires gathering data, staying informed about market conditions, and adapting strategies accordingly. Today, I am joined by Michael Schwarz, Founder and CEO of Treeline Cheese. Michael grew up in South Africa, in a family of prominent opponents to the apartheid regime. It is there that he developed his sense of justice and fair play for all. He had always enjoyed fine European cheeses but when he found out just how cruel the production of dairy products is, he decided that he had to try and change things. So he gave up dairy and his 25 year career as an intellectual property lawyer and turned his attention to making vegan cheese. Treeline was born in his kitchen over a decade ago. Michael started selling his new cheese door to door, trying to convince stores to take a chance on what was then an unknown product. Treeline soon became a favorite at vegan markets and festivals. Treeline cheese is now available in thousands of stores nationwide, including Whole Foods, Sprouts, Wegmans and many independents. It was recently named best vegan cheese by tastingtable.com, thedailymeal.com and USA Today (of which I was one of the experts on the panel who created the list readers voted on!). Growing up in South Africa to a family of activists and witnessing the devastating effects of apartheid, today's guest, Michael Schwarz, had his moral compass set to true north at an early age. Driven by a profound sense of justice and a desire to combat the deleterious effects dairy has on our planet, he decided to step away from a 25-year career as an intellectual property lawyer and change the food industry by launching Treeline cheese – an independent vegan cheese company. Michael also appeared in episode 76, where we learned all about his remarkable upbringing, the incredible work his father did as a defense attorney – including the trial of Nelson Mandela, where Michael's father defended Mandela's co-defendant and won – and how he made the transition from being a lawyer himself to a vegan cheese entrepreneur. So if you're interested in learning what it's like to run a small vegan cheese company in an era where conglomerates want to take over the industry with cheap knockoffs – and powerful entities like the dairy lobby of Canada are after you – you definitely want to tune in! “Is the division of Kraft that makes plant-based Philadelphia ever going to be on this show and try to talk against what's going on in the dairy farms and the slaughterhouses that Kraft is supplying, or that are supplying Kraft? That's never going to happen. And if vegan food is now in the control of these large nonvegan companies, they will stifle voices for animal rights.” - Michael Schwarz What we discuss in this episode: - How the Canadian dairy lobby is trying to block Michael's trademark. - The threat vegan products pose to Big Dairy. - How meat and dairy conglomerates are hurting vegan brands and working to inhibit progress. - Tips for consumers to navigate making purchases that align with their ethics. - How Michael makes Treeline cheeses more environmentally friendly. - Why it's important to support smaller vegan brands. - Treeline's delicious new products and plans for the future. I saw Dan Fridd in action promoting Edelweiss "the book industry's platform to market, sell, discover, and order new titles" at the RISE Bookselling Conference in Prague a few weeks ago and knew I had to have him on the show. Dan is Client "Success" Manager for Edelweiss. We talk about the company, his career in bookselling IT, and how "Above the Treeline" provides booksellers with the big picture; about book sales, inventory management, pie charts, Barbara Kingsolver's The Lacuna, the John Sandoe Bookshop in London, Ann Arbor, Michigan, book conversations opening up your world, marina management software, yachts, coding, data splicing, browsing publisher sales catalogues, analytics, creating your own catalogues, the Book Bugs and Dragon Tales bookshop, Norwich, Mitch Kaplan, and gigs in the Cayman Islands. Sure this may all sound a bit stodgy to non-booksellers, but I'm telling you, Dan gives dynamite interview.
If you were one of those kids in school who stared out of the window most of the time, this episode is for you. I'm joined by Kwesia X, aka City Girl in Nature (check out her many amazing videos), and by Ben Rawlence, author of three books, most recently The Treeline and founder and director of Black Mountains College. It's a beautiful and thought-provoking conversation. Just how different could our education system be, and how would the imagination flourish if we made those changes? Classrooms? So last year.
Join us for a special edition of "Above the Treeline" where ACF Pastors Will Davis, Jr. and Lauren Thurston discuss the recent shootings in Nashville as well as the divisive media response and how Christians should respond.
Got questions about God, Christianity, faith, and culture? Above the Treeline is dedicated to tackling these tough issues through the lens of Scripture led by Austin Christian Fellowship (ACF) Pastors Will Davis, Jr. and Lauren Thurston. They continue to change. So, if a company right now is a Virtual remote or hybrid find no problem, but the companies that are requiring individuals to come back to the office, the conversion rate on that, getting somewhat excited to go to an office every day is incredibly challenging”. - Dan Fantasia [5:01] “People find new opportunities. We have like no turnover, right? It's there's, no, you don't want to be forced into an opportunity, find a good fit. And if you have concerns, then don't move forward. We'll just keep working with you. Let's just keep building a pipeline and educating you about new opportunities until you do find the right fit”. - Dan Fantasia [8:54] “To change 6,000 people's lives by 2029. We, and we're not doing it like as a, you know, big commercial organization, we generally are invested in the… that we help BDR and SDRS, and over their life, you know, over their career, we continue to help advance their careers and Grow. And it's wonderful. I just like it's awesome. Really”. - Dan Fantasia [23:13] “Kids that get out of college, they have no idea what they wanna do, right? What's next. And then after that, when you are in your career, there there are many people that just get stock and they just, they get promoted and they follow a path”. - Dan Fantasia [28:53] “People just get lost. They just don't know and they haven't talked to anyone. It's the same as we just mentioned it companies, when we first get started with a company, they say they know exactly what they want, but usually 99 percent of the time that changes a bit as they get into the search and they realize what kind of talent we can introduce it, just it all starts to change and what that costs by the way it's the same thing for the candidate when they start to understand what options they're qualified for, and what kinds of companies they could consider. It opens up that, you know, it's an open horizon to new opportunities that they've never considered before”. - Dan Fantasia [30:57] TIMESTAMPS [0:00] - Meet Dan Fantasia [2:50] - How the sales landscape has changed [4:40] - Dan on remote work [7:02] - Dan on TreeLine and their experience in hiring sales professionals [11:35] - Dan on candidates' lifecycle [15:52] - What to look for on SDR Managers [22:11] - Dan on what to “settle” for when hiring [26:13] - Dan on the macroeconomic changes in the sales industry [28:30] - Dan on how to manage your career [32:01] - Dan's approach to coaching companies [36:55] - How to attract a recruiter's attention on LinkedIn [46:50] - Get in touch with Dan CONNECT Dan Fantasia's LinkedIn CIENCE on LinkedIn CIENCE on Facebook CIENCE on Twitter CIENCE on Instagram Learn more about your ad choices.
